I'm sorry, but I will be leaving the message boards for a while. A previously short venture these past two days has now turned into a full-time position, one that will be taking most of my free time to keep up. With so much time gone, I'm going to have to prioritize what I can keep up with, and playing the great games here is not. So I apologize, but I will not be able to continue for the forseeable future. Please bot/exit me as you see fit.

-Blue Drake.

Swashbuckler (Inspired) 2 | hp 16/16, panache 4/4 | Init 3, Per 5 | AC 16, T 13, FF 13 | Fort 0, Ref 6, Will 0 | Rapier 6 (1d6+3/18-20) | Deeds: Opportune P and R, Derring Do, Dodging Panache

Nicholas looks to the others. "What do you think? We could station at Esmeranda's."

Nicholas shrugs in response. "I think I'm in the same boat, so you're welcome to join, I guess. Just wait until you meet Esmeranda, though." Nicholas finishes his statement with a chuckle, choosing not to elaborate.

"So what are our plans for the moment?" Nicholas says, as he begins to lead the wheelbarrow away. "Once we drop off these guys, of course. Esmeranda said we had some destiny tied to yesterday's mess somehow, but what in the world does that mean? We don't even know who's on the throne at the moment. We'll need to gather some information. I work at a tavern in Old Korvosa. We could see what we hear there while I check in with the old man."

"Well, let's get to that temple before one of those groups decide to take interest in us," Nicholas says, starting to walk once more.

"So you lost your fingers in a fight?" Nicholas surmises. "The rapier is the only weapon I know how to use. My teacher wasn't elegant. He just to poke them with the pointy end. His lessons have served so far."

Nicholas pulls out the rapier to let the man take a look while asking, "So what do you plan to do now?"

At the hilt of the rapier is a rather decorative, distinctive handle, a luxury the man had spent for before Nicholas had obtained it. A golden rose makes for the small pommel on the end. Nicholas himself does not know what, if anything, it symbolizes outside of just plain decoration.

Swashbuckler (Inspired) 2 | hp 16/16, panache 4/4 | Init 3, Per 5 | AC 16, T 13, FF 13 | Fort 0, Ref 6, Will 0 | Rapier 6 (1d6+3/18-20) | Deeds: Opportune P and R, Derring Do, Dodging Panache

"I have seem more men run at the threat of authority than at actual authority," Nicholas comments, thinking back to his days under Gaedren. "Though a lot of them gave a lot of bluster while they trned on their heels."

Nicholas shakes the man's hand, but looks curiously at the ring as he takes it. "I am Nicholas, and it was a pleasure to help. However, I do not know what I would need a ring for. If it doesn't show, I've never been much for money or the like."

"I would like to ask a few questions, though," Nicholas says, changing topics. "We were dealing with some of the local scum last night before the town erupted in a riot. We're trying to get these kids to safety at the moment, but we've yet to really even hear rumors of what's happened. Do you have any news? Has the King truly died? And who has the throne now?"

Ignore what the man in the patchwork clothing says! He really dooes needs that gold! Gimme, gimme, gimme!

Swashbuckler (Inspired) 2 | hp 16/16, panache 4/4 | Init 3, Per 5 | AC 16, T 13, FF 13 | Fort 0, Ref 6, Will 0 | Rapier 6 (1d6+3/18-20) | Deeds: Opportune P and R, Derring Do, Dodging Panache

So far, all of my characters have deviated from their inital ideas once actually in the game. Nicholas was meant to be more Captain Sparrow swashbuckler-y, I have a fey-human who is coming unraveled at the seams because of an unexpected crime, and a druid who is hiding in the shadows more than summoning masses of dangerous beasts. I do have a goblin who is working out as planned, though his speech patterns are tricky to get right. Goes to show how life does effect how one turns out.

Swashbuckler (Inspired) 2 | hp 16/16, panache 4/4 | Init 3, Per 5 | AC 16, T 13, FF 13 | Fort 0, Ref 6, Will 0 | Rapier 6 (1d6+3/18-20) | Deeds: Opportune P and R, Derring Do, Dodging Panache

Nicholas is impulsive, and the RNG's have let him be so so far. He was pretty lucky he didn't break his foot storming Gaedren's place with a -1 modifier. Can't wait until he crit fails at an important part. I will be laughing as much as the audience.

Swashbuckler (Inspired) 2 | hp 16/16, panache 4/4 | Init 3, Per 5 | AC 16, T 13, FF 13 | Fort 0, Ref 6, Will 0 | Rapier 6 (1d6+3/18-20) | Deeds: Opportune P and R, Derring Do, Dodging Panache

"Well, I'd thought they might have at least put up a little fight," Nicholas mutters, scratching his head. "I guess you guys won't have to wait at all, then. Let's see what the nobleman is doing."

"Are you alright, sir? What are you doing wandering the streets alone?" Nicholas asks the noble.

They ignored the patchwork clothing and motley group of children! :D

Swashbuckler (Inspired) 2 | hp 16/16, panache 4/4 | Init 3, Per 5 | AC 16, T 13, FF 13 | Fort 0, Ref 6, Will 0 | Rapier 6 (1d6+3/18-20) | Deeds: Opportune P and R, Derring Do, Dodging Panache

Rioters, Nicholas thinks sourly. It will be days now at the earliest before it's truly safe to walk around. Why in the world is this noble walking around without an escort?

Nicholas looks to the others and whispers, "The kids need to get ot the orphange. This won't take but a minute to take care of, so go ahead and keep them safe. I'll catch up."

Turning to the looters, Nicholas takes a few steps forward and pulls out his rapier with confidence. "Death to the false Queen? Is that a conspiracy I hear?" Nicholas asks boldly. "In the name of the Queen of Korvosa, surrender and face judgement!"

Intimidate: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (12) + 7 = 19
Bluff: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Please ignore the patchwork clothing and motley group of children while you're at it! :D

Nicholas keeps an eye on 'Rabbit' after this. He's a little unstable, and unstable is not good, Nicholas thinks.

Gathering up the prisoners in the wheelbarrow, despite their protests of now consciousness, Nicholas turns to the others. "Are we ready then?"

Let's get to that orphanage.

If they try to win them over, we'll just offer them something better: a free kick for each child at each of them. That should get them back to 0 hit points again, too.

"Shelyn's temple will be good," Nicholas comments.

And Emma now owns her own little cult.

"Well Shiver was Gaedren's special trade," Nicholas confirms. "Most Shiver in this area was in his hands at one point or another. As for stopping it, that will be near impossible. People thrive and die on that stuff. Too addicting."

"I am Nicholas Sparrow, a common tavern worker," he says, hoding out his hand.

Seems he's seen his share of trouble, Nicholas thinks, noticing the scars.

Nicholas studies the card for a moment before stepping to the side and sheathing his rapier. What's going on now? Nicholas thinks as he lets the halfling in.

"Yes, we killed Gaedren," Nicholas confirms. "I'm guessing you got a mysterious note and card without knowing how?"

Turning to the others, Nicholas asks, "Should we try to talk to Esmeranda and see what she's up to again now, or should we wait until we're alone again? We still have to get these kids a home."

Once the halfling steps in, Nicholas closes the door again, but keeps an eye on the newcomer.

Nicholas sits at the window, even after Marvel leaves, still thinking as the kids begin to waken.

He jumps as a knock sounds on the door, having seen no one approach. Glancing at the others with a frown, Nicholas draws his blade and moves to the door. Taking a breath Nicholas jerks it open quickly with his blade extended.

His gaze quickly drops from eye-level when he realizes it is a halfling at the door. "What do you need?" Nicholas asks, not putting the blade away.

I have never run short of those kind of jokes before.

And welcome, Jamir. Hopefully we don't kill you too fast.

"I don't really know what I'm doing eithe, but I wish you luck," Nicholas says. "You're a pretty good shot for one who's not a fighter. And Manyshot...you better treasure your family."

While Nicholas waits for the others, he takes a seat by a window, simply staring outside at nothing in particlar. Outwardly still, his thoughts rage inside. I thought I would feel different after he was gone. But today I woke up just the same. The anger is replaced with something else, but I do not feel the joy I thought I would. What does this mean, and what do I do now?

Easier to do with Calistria. No one wants to be on her bad side, afterall.

Step Two to Surviving RPG's: Befriend the Cleric. Always befriend the Cleric.

Step One is of course to Never Split the Party.

Nicholas smiles in thanks to Shaeda as she heals him. He had almost forgotten then with all this action.

"Well, our first priority is to get these lambs somewhere safe, and we'll have to wait till the rioting ends to do that," Nicholas says. "Let's all get a good night's rest and then start from there. The riots will probably be over, and we'll be able to find out exactly what just happened tonight."

@Marvel: :p

"A greater destiny?" Nicholas echoes quietly with a frown. Stupid magic. Creates too many questions and not enough answers. Always too vague and never straightforward enough. Finishing Gaedren was supposed to fix everything and make it normal.

"How is this connected to all this rioting? Are we supposed to hunt down the king's killer or something? Or take the throne for ourselves? You answered a question and left three. What are we supposed to do now?" Nicholas questions, frustrated.

Swashbuckler (Inspired) 2 | hp 16/16, panache 4/4 | Init 3, Per 5 | AC 16, T 13, FF 13 | Fort 0, Ref 6, Will 0 | Rapier 6 (1d6+3/18-20) | Deeds: Opportune P and R, Derring Do, Dodging Panache

Nicholas starts as he sees the room transform before his eyes. It always has to be magic, he sourly thinks, not knowing how to respond to such things.

As Esmeranda finishes, Nicholas holds up his Harrow card and asks, "Who are you really? A ghost? A spirit? Some avatar of Calistria? I thank you for guiding us to Gaedren, but...there are just so many questions now. And if Gaedren was the reason your spirit was here, how are you still here now?"

"What kind of magic is this?" Nicholas murmurs, wiping his finger along the dust just to make sure. With a chill sneaking up his spine, Nicholas pulls off his pack and searches for the Harrow card he was given at the start.

Does he still have the card?

Nicholas stands outside, ushering them all in and entering last. He keeps watch on the sky, making sure no imp tries to get too close. Coming into the gaudy room behind everyone, Nicholas makes sure to close and lock the door. "We should check to make sure it is definitely empty and bar any other entrances."

Is there anything off about the room that Nicholas can tell?

So, Esmeranda's place first I guess. We'll probably end up with a hook before we even need to drop off the bodies.

Blue Drake here with my submission. Crunch and all that in the alias.

-----------

History:
When the Second Starfall happened, many of the clerics and worshipers of Desna began to wrestle about the reasoning behind her disappearance. Some said that all gods were gone, others that they had disobeyed and thus caused the event; a few even doubted that they existed in the first place.

A small group, consisting mostly of Varisians, left the others and settled into their own community in Varisia to keep to their own ideals. Believing they had worshipped Desna completely wrong for the past several centuries, they stopped traveling, stopped acting impulsively, and stopped doing much of what people thought Desna was for. Instead, they made their own rules and regulations, attempting to rediscover Desna's presence by completely changing their way of life.

Their new location was that of an old ruins that was no longer used. Building upon the old structures, it was a constant struggle with the constant threat of wild creatures, bandits, and other strange things that would appear. With no chance at a second life and no magic, the people began to vigorously practice the 'Way of the Shooting Star', a previous fighting technique of clerics of Desna that was mainly used for self defense. It was a slow process, but the community finally managed to create a life of their own.

----------

Background:
It was in this community that Zandu Starsong was born. Living among a group of devout, if wayward, worshippers of a god that never answered, Zandu lived much of his life half-questioning their beliefs. Taught to fight after a special fighting technique that was called the 'Way of the Shooting Star', Zandu learned how to create a special weapon they called a starknife and how to use it. The rest of the community put value on the special dances and songs of Desna, believing that she would answer them one day.

It wasn't until he was toiling at making a small garden that anything out of the ordinary happened for him. Finding a small hidden cache in the ground, Zandu dug up an ornate and worn box from years ago. Hidden within were eight scrolls, written in the Varisian tongue.

After intesive study, he discovered that these were a collection of scrolls on how to follow Desna and her ways. In them, he found contradition after contradition on how they lived versus what the scrolls said. Further, he found the name of these to be the "Eight Scrolls", the only true official writings of Desna.

The scrolls were old, though, and the centuries had worn at them. Zandu carefully took these home and copied them onto his own scrolls, not wanting to lose this precious find. As he wrote each part of these foreign document, a new, passionate faith began to build in him, as he had finally found a true connection with the god he had worshipped all his life.

Taking the original scrolls to the council, Zandu's find was taken and promptly burned. They pronounced him to be a heretic and banished from the community. Taking what few things he owned, as well as his sole copy of the scrolls, he journeyed out, deciding to do just what the scrolls said: travel.

Believing his old way of life was the very reason Desna left them, he began to live the scrolls by the letter while traveling, searching everywhere for the missing god. Desna was out there somewhere, and he would not stop until he found her.

----------

Personality and Motives:
Zandu is an upbeat lad, if quite wise for his years. His old connections preached wisedom rather than rashness, an old habit he wishes to break. He also used to be quiet and obedient to authority, but with the scrolls in hand, he is trying his best to change.

Zandu's current goal is to find Desna, with the smaller goals of finding out more about her and learning to walk accordingly to her scrolls. His first was to teach himself to travel rather than settle, a heavy teaching of his previous home.

His strangest quirk about him, is his sudden zealous behavior toward Desna. In a land where few believed they even existed despite eye-witness claims, Zandu's questing has caught many a person's attention when he announces his plans. Even back in his hometown, most of the population had given up on Desna, their dances and songs becoming more and more of a part of their culture, rather than their faith. However, Zandu belives his discovery of an original copy of 'The Eight Scrolls' has him convinced that she is somewhere and needs someone to search for her.

----------

Appearance and Mannerisms:
Zandu used to wear the dark brown and greens of his hometown, but has since began to wear the more colorful clothing of Desna's teaching since leaving. Wearing flowing, deep blue clothes, Zandu has also stitched in dark orange patterns thoughout, Desna's color for travel. The main pattern is a monarch stitched across the left part of his chest.

Zandu is a man of average height and weight, his appearance rough, but kind. He has put less effort into the strict appearance he was taught to keep, even letting himself grow some facial hair. He keeps a few starknives on him at all times, though, as he knows the roads are rough and they are his only form of protection. Desna has thus far kept him protected, or he likes to think so.

----------

Character Concept/Plans:
Zandu is a human swashbuckler that uses the starknife in battle. Utilizing both melee and short ranged attacks, he uses his force of personality more than strength. If somehow the cleric class opens later on in the campaign, he might multiclass, but for now, he will be a straight swashbuckler.

Being newish to PbP, I took on some new players to give them a chance. So far, so good. The ruins they're at aren't even in the book, just a community add on.

The discussion thread is so quiet there, though. I think this game has made me spoiled. :)

And cool! I'm being stalked!

My RotR game is going great. I've added a few more goblin events in there for hilarity, because they're fun to play with. Now the group is connecting every little event into a massive overarching plan of the goblins to accomplish a great evil...and this is before the Glassworks in book 1. I can't wait until we reach the Skinsaw Murders.

"We might not want to let the children leave the building, right now," Nicholas states. "Looks like a lot of the city is rioting. It would be safer to stay here until it passes rather than herding a group of kids through the streets. The farest we might want to risk it would be the Harrower's home. I wonder who killed the king this time."

"I may very well take you up on that offter," Nicholas says to Shaeda with a smile. "I don't have much else to do, so I guess I'll check out this Harrower's house for now with you. I'm not a superstitious type, but this...well, it has my interest piqued."

After a pause, he adds, "If any of you are in the Old Korvosa area, I work at the Crimson Dragon. Any of you are free to drop by at any time."

"Gaedren? The Key-Lock Killer?" Nicholas echoes with a laugh. "Gaedren couldn't work alone like that if his life depended on it, as you can now see. No, he was a good theif and fighter in his prime, but he was definitely not that serial killer.

"Few in the guard will recognize it, but it will be helpful if I need to intimidate someone who does later on. The guard has probably stopped caring now that the killer has stopped, and there is no reward that I know of for his death, not on the up-and-up anyway. I still don't know what I'm doing after this, but this might just lead me to...something. Besides, I want to keep it as a...momento of sorts of this event."

The brooch will probably set them for life...as long as they don't become adventurer. And anything with a description like that must be a key item to some plot point along the way.

Okay. Keeping the key dagger then if no one wants it for actual use.

The dagger was more an RP than something Nicholas will actually use, so if anyone actually plans to use it, ask away.

As for Thassilonian, Nicholas is just awesome like that. :D But really, I saw it as a language he might have picked up from the many strange connections and items Gaedren had and his position of helping to decipher stuff, just like his local knowledge skills (which is a +10 now!).

"Her sister maybe?" Nicholas muses. "Could be her take against Gaedren."

Trying to not look at the head, he glances at the other items. Picking up the dagger he looks it over. "For the inspiration of a father. Sounds like the Key-Lock Killer, some serial killer from a while ago. Didn't think Gaedren would be interested in something like this."

Inspiration of a father, huh? Nicholas thinks, glancing from the blade to Gaedren. I shall keep this to remember what good you did do, even if you were horrible, Gaedren. Rest in peace.

As he slides the blade through his belt, Nicholas picks up the brooch with a laugh. "This is all we need to convict Gaedren. This is the brooch that Queen Ileosa wore. Rumors had gone around a few months ago that a gang leader had stolen it, but I didn't think Gaedren would have been stupid enough to hold on to it. There's a pretty hefty sum out for its return, too."

After a few minutes of clearing his head, Nicholas forces himself p and heads back inside. The colder air had done him so good, and he felt a little better now. That is, until Aerel over a head of the Harrower.

"Um...what...what is that?" Nicholas asks.
