Montague is shaken out of his sadness by Ynja's approach.

"How do you know this is what happened, and who did it? Were you here"?

His suspicion fades however as he realizes that if she was complicent she wouldn't be volunteering this information.

He looks down sheepishly. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to be rude. This is all just so... weird. I don't remember seeing this man you have described. Guess I must have been enthralled by the presentation".

I do wonder how she knows this.

"Perhaps we could check the professors office at the college and see if we can uncover any clues there. Perhaps we could uncover a guest list for the event. If not then perhaps the venue has a list of attendees".

Sorry about the slow posting. Not normal, but the first part of my week went haywire... Thought I'd have time to post, but you know what they say... The best laid plans...

I agree about needing to pick up the pace. This is an investigative game, and we need a little more guidance on what to do next. I'd like to continue, but it's taking us forever to uncover clues about what we're supposed to do.

Saying you have days to sight see London isn't really moving the game along. We now know that the man from the night of the dinner was responsible... but do we have any idea who he might be or how to find him? We can't search the professors house as it's burnt down. It's okay to reveal a little information to help us.

As usual after attending Mass, Montague heads towards the small Tea shop close to his modest hotel. He reads the first article, and is puzzled, but quickly his eyes are drawn to the second article, and he nearly chokes on his Tea.

He pays and quickly rushes back to his hotel room to dress more appropriately and head over to Professor Smiths house. He is flagged down by the desk clerk who gives him the message from Eva.

She must have heard the news about the Professor.

He quickly calls her back, and if she answers tells her he's headed over to Professor Smiths home to see if he can gather any information. He also calls the Professor's school office to see if he picks up there by any chance... before heading out.

Let's go. Don't see any need to roleplay visiting the sites of London. :-)

Enjoying this game and the characters... but we might need to be pushed along a bit. Haven't really done anything yet. :-)

"Oh! And what would you recommend... especially for one travelling alone, and not interested in the nightlife"?

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Well this is interesting and all... but still not sure why the professor invited me. We're friends and all, but it seems there is something lacking from the invite

Montague goes looking for the professor and grabs his hand.

"Thank you for the invite professor. The subject was most interesting. I suppose I'll head back to Vatican City shortly unless there is something more to discuss".

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

1d100 ⇒ 83 Spot Hidden (25%)

Montague watches the presentation with interest but refrains from commenting too much. At times his theories didn't exactly coincide with the official opinions of the church... so he had learned to keep his opinions to himself... Hearsay and all...

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Strange... but things are not always cut and dried. Obviously, these are either souls that have been prevented from moving on by something, or demons manifesting. It would be interesting to look more into it.

Montague smiles and nods at Ynja's perceptive question, and listens closely to the professor's reply, all thoughts of food now forgotten, as the mystery begins to feed his curiosity...

He tries to relate what he's seeing with any past experience.

Montague eats & drinks.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague pulls out the chair of any ladies sitting close to him then settles himself for dinner. If he is asked to give blessing, he will... otherwise he gives a quick quiet low prayer before dining.

I guess we're just waiting for something to happen???

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Unused to such intimate contact... especially from an attractive woman, Montague starts to pull away, then realizes that would be rude, so while he doesn't return the enthusiasm he at least bears it.

"Yes... Let's see the exhibit".

I'm guessing Montague would visit the local church and volunteer, while taking some time to visit the library and research the period of history for the speech, since he knows little of that part of the world and/or that period of history. He would then have an early dinner, and a good night's rest.

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague is a bit bemused by the attention. Though not shy he is a bit socially awkward as he doesn't have much experience outside of religious and spiritual conversations.

He is saved from his blush deepening by the arrival of the older professor. He reaches to take his hand with both of his giving his best smile and greeting.

"Ah! Dr. Asbjornsen is it? A great pleasure to make your acquaintance. I'm Father Montague... but you can call me Monty if you please".

He then turns to the "debating" young women in their small group.

"It would be a shame to leave without getting to know each other better. Perhaps we could walk with the professor through the displays, and he could give us one of his fascinating stories about each"?

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague's eyes travel over to the new arrival, and he quickly has to avert his eyes upward to meet hers. "Ah. Another new arrival. As I said. I am Father Montague, and I would name myself a tall glass of holy water".

He blushes a bit as he answers the forward young woman.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague's clerical collar is evident as he turns to offer his hand to the dimutive woman.

"I am Father Montague. It is indeed a pleasure to meet you".

The terminology is a bit confusing as to if there is a spell name or if I just attempt something to see what happens... but I'll just play it by ear when the time comes to accept something.

Montague went to Garmes Seminary in Paris. A hidden cache of relics was uncovered when he was a student there and the professor was brought in to consult. While there he discovered that Professor Smith smoked the same pipe tobacco that he did, so they became friends talking over pipes and fine tobaccos. This friendship grew and they became pen-pals often sending each other samples of unique blends they discovered.

What do you don't understand about how True Faith work?

And how did you know Prof. Smith? What ie your relationship with him?

Mainly… where do. I find the true faith rules?

I see your lists of “new talents” etc. but can’t open anything

Montague walks into the room taking in everything with a casual glance. He fills the doorway with his large frame ducking slightly out of habit as he enters though the door is large enough to admit him without doing so. A thin haze of smoke fills the air, and the low murmur of conversation provides background noise punctuated by the occasional laugh.

The familiar scent of Balkan Sobranje is detected from an area to his left and he looks over to see his partner in stinky tobacco Professor Smith talking to an obviously Oriental woman.

No hard feelings, but it's probably best I step away from the game. I was enjoying doing something different by playing an "unlikable" character, that had planned on gaining confidence in both himself and the other players thorough experiencing success, and learning to trust others. To grow from a sniveling, selfish youth to a confident, likeable young man. I don't see where "in game" anything has happened to give him confidence to develop. If it had, or if it did then you would have seen him grow into more of a party member, but awarding him with false confidence when he had accomplished very little to nothing, would be meta-gaming... which I detest. I know his character sheet shows he's capable, but nothing in game has reinforced that fact.

In play Montague has hit something maybe three-four times since the game started. Now obviously I can look at his stats, and see that he's effective in combat, but the experiences in the "character's" life have basically sapped any confidence he might have. In fact I didn't post it, but in the last combat I actually rolled a natural 19 on a dagger throw on this board, but didn't post it, as I remembered I not only couldn't see what was going on, but had been given the task of guarding the rear of the party. When he asked if we were winning, his intent was to move forward with a negative response, and add his attacks to the group, but the combat was already over. So because he did what he was asked in guarding the rear, and the combat was over in two rounds... which he would have joined in the next round, he has been denied advancement. I thought XP portrayed learning through experience, and growing as a character, not piling up bodies.

What young Montague has learned instead is that if you don't do what everyone else wants and expects you to do you cannot grow as a character...

Again, thanks for the opportunity, and I wish the party luck in this neverending quest to fill their bellies, and kill random encounters. No hard feelings, and hope to see you guys around the boards.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

This is a "Role Playing" game not a tabletop battle game. I chose to play Montague as a sniveling little coward that lets the people with armor and sharp weapons do what they do best. He might be able to hit with light weapons (Though his history dictate otherwise), but he is also hit very easily, and will go down quickly in melee. If there is room to maneuver around, and get back-attack damage, or otherwise sneakily get in a hit, or even more wide open combat (He did throw his two daggers in the last battle). he'll do so, but it's not in his personality to attract attacks.

Are you telling me your character is only good at combat, and has no other skills, so you should only do combat, but Montague is supposed to do everything?

I'm sorry you don't like Montague's actions, but frankly you're not playing his character. You don't have to like him, and if he's ruining your enjoyment of the game, I'll respectfully withdraw, but I believe you need to expand your thinking about how I play my character.

If the GM chooses not to reward XP for my character playing his role, then that's fine. Eventually he'll fall behind and end up getting killed anyway.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

OK. I'll keep that in mind. Next time you disarm the trap.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

BTW... I'm not a big fan of withholding XP from those not actively participating in combat. I'll live with your decision, but that's not what Montague is all about. Does he get experience for doing the things that he's good at... disarming, unlocking, gathering poison, sneaking? If so are there opportunities to frequently use these abilities? In this case he was rear guard and if the party had been attacked from behind he would have fought. If we only get XP for combat and treasure, then I would have made a fighter.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague takes the Amphora with the pickled scorpion tails in it, and steps away to empty out the pickling agent, then shaking the remaining tails out a bit in the jar, he attempts to milk the poison from the scorpion tails into the container.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 Tinker???

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

"Yeah... I could eat again, and let's let him heal before venturing onward".

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

"What is happening? Are we winning"?

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague gathers up his two daggers, and peers down the edges, certain that they must be a flawed as his old bow was to fly so untrue, then takes up his position guarding the rear of the NPC's.

"Whatever that is, please dispose of it quickly... or should we just retreat for a bit, and let it pass by".

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague jumps up on the supplies in 7.19, and slings a dagger at the beast.

16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (5) = 11 Dagger
1d4 ⇒ 3 Point

Which glances off the ceiling and falls harmlessly to the ground.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague moves forward and looks around the corner to appraise the situation, and determine what is needed. Looking through the mass of people and supplies, he begins to make his way forward.

"Come on! The actions up here".

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague eats his fill as well.

"I still say they can carry their own food back. I don't mind guarding them".

A as well

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

"If they're hungry, let them come and eat. We are not their serving wenches. I say we spike the door, take what we want, and let them know where the rest is. If they're not comfortable down here, they can carry up their own stuff".

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

I was under the impression that the target had to be "unaware" in order to get backstab. This is good news.

16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (13) = 3 Short Sword (+4 =-1)
16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (4) = 12 Short Sword2 (+4 +8)

1d4 + 3d6 ⇒ (2) + (3, 1, 3) = 9 Damage

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Feeling a little more confident, Montague moves up and tries to use his sword on George.

Move to 10:14

16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (4) = 12 Sword
1d6 ⇒ 4 Stab

But once again begins to question whether his one hit was luck, or skill... It looks like luck.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Encouraged a bit by his newfound skill, Montague attempts to hold on tight this time.

16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (10) = 6 Sword
1d6 ⇒ 2 cut

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (17) = -1 Exercising his forearms

1d6 ⇒ 1 Just in case he meets some resistance.

Montague is so surprised that his sword met some resistance, that the blade twists in his hands failing to deliver much damage.

"Ohhh!"

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (9) = 7 Waving sharp pointy object in general direction of enemy.

1d6 ⇒ 6 Fruitless thrusting damage.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague, tired of doing nothing in combat to help the group, finally decides to see if he can help, and squeezes into the melee.

16 - 1d20 ⇒ 16 - (4) = 12 Shortsword
1d6 ⇒ 2 hole

But finds that his ineptitude at combat continues.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague once again prepares to support as he can... and hide when he can't.

NOTE: Once he has the opportunity to find a new bow to replace his faulty one... he'll begin to provide covering fire again. I believe he destroyed his old one.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague his attitude much improved after a good nights sleep investigates the door.

1d6 ⇒ 6 Find Traps

"Seems safe to me".

Montague tries to open the door.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague whispers. "Let us find a way to bypass these creatures. We do not need the nourishment they might provide at the moment, and I am tired and need rest. Do you think throwing a little of the food to them might distract them, or are they sated by their current meal".

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

I suppose trying to negotiate couldn't hurt anything, then return to camp before heading down. How's that for a decisive answer :-)

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague simply shrugs as the crazy old bat dies, and helps loot the body. "I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for a nap".

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

+1 to manipulation scores.

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

Montague takes a sip of the new found water and swishes it about in his mouth, before swallowing, then taking another.

"Let's take some of this to the others. I'm not sure it is safe for us to separate, but I fear if we leave the door unguarded they will escape and bring more help.".

Montague then looks at the escapades of Fineous and snorts.

"Personally I'm starting to think taking sides with obviously competent warriors with a God behind them is a better option than this fool with his supposed king. Do you think they would listen after we attacked them"?

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

I know that mechanically Montague could hit, but I'm role playing the fact that he lost all confidence in his ability to hit with all the bad rolls. Maybe he'll find a new bow somewhere, and have better luck.

"Should we return with the supplies to the others? I would hate for this to all disappear if we left it".

Male Human Priest (Dreamer); HP 32/32; MP 19/19; Dodge 70/35/14

When the action calms down Montague steps out of his hidey hole, and finds himself attacked by his own party member.

"What do you know about me. You with your armour and weapon skills. I grew up in the streets with nobody to help me, and I learned how to survive, which is what I do. You hit things, I open things. Were I to die by foolishly trying to attack something that I have no chance of hitting, then who would find your traps for you and open your doors? Those can kill you as fast as a sword. You are not a god to judge what is good and bad about a person".

Montague moves over to search the area around the door, giving dirty glances to Ferrous as he searches.

1d6 ⇒ 6 Search for traps
1d6 ⇒ 6 Search for secret doors.

He then turns to the surely dwarf. "I am not a coward. I'm here aren't I? I do what I must to survive. Perhaps instead of proving your skills by slapping me unexpectedly you should instead turn your time into teaching me to use weapons and fight".
