Merixia nods to Anevia, somewhat surprised that the scout recognized Ragathiel's ancient symbol. Well, she is originally from Nidal. It's said that the Nidalese possess ancient knowledge lost to the rest of Golarion, since Zon-Kuthon protected them from the effects of Earthfall. She'll have to talk to Anevia later and see what else she knows. And talk to Irabeth about the possibility of guiding their resident devil onto the path of redemption.

All in all, though, this is going far better than she anticipated! Apparently Irabeth is pragmatic enough to accept the services of an executioner devil, and the rest of the crusaders trust her enough to go along with it. This is why Merixia wanted Irabeth in charge when they set out from Kenabres.

Which of my current buffs will still be active when we kick the door in? Will I have time to cast more short-term buffs?

I’m glad to hear that you’re okay, Trevor, but very sad to see you go. I get it though. Gods know that life has critted me in the face enough times over the years, and I didn’t have kids while that was happening! I hope things ease up for you soon, and that you and your family have a happy winter holiday together.

Hi folks! Like Thesius said, we really need DPS, since the characters leaving were two thirds of our firepower. Merixia is a battle cleric (as one might expect of a Ragathielite) and pretty decent in the damage department, but she needs some help. Especially with this AP.

It would make my life easier if you made Good aligned characters. Aiming spells like holy smite is way harder when you have to worry about affecting a non-Good teammate. Other than that, follow your mythic character dreams!

See, I wanted an upgradeable weapon so I can upgrade it whenever and wherever we happen to be when I get enough loot to pay for upgrades. Plus I don’t think Verene has the Craft Magic Arms and Armor feat.

I actually took Legendary Weapon for my tier 2 ability, I just keep forgetting to introduce it IC. It’s up to you if you want to give Radiance to Merixia, but she will be extremely reluctant to take it if Azira is going on a dangerous mission. My plan was for Merixia’s current weapon to become empowered. If you have a different idea, though, I’m all ears!

I would rather recruit a new player. Are we going to need Radiance for the upcoming plot?

If the folks you have in mind aren’t interested, I can ask some of my fellow players in the RotRL game I’m in.

Also, do you want to start the process for officially inheriting the game so you can modify stuff? I know I’ve seen a stickied thread somewhere with instructions for that.

FYI, this is a VERY busy time of year for me. Both my mom and I have a lot more time on our hands than money, so we bake massive quantities of Christmas cookies as gifts for family and friends. I'm baking all day every day for the next week and a half or so. Please bot me as necessary, I'll be back to my regular schedule after Christmas!

GM Lili, if you live in the US I will be happy to send you cookies too. :) Alas, I can't afford international shipping.

And that's why Merixia has been so friendly towards a devil! She saw Irathiel's loyalty toward Ragathiel and thought "it's free real estate!". Getting such a powerful devil to convert to good would be a valuable addition to Ragathiel's army and a slap in the face to Asmodeus, both of which Merixia considers to be excellent things.

Merixia accepts the devil's proffered hand and shakes it, glad of her gauntlets. She doesn't want to be rude and cause an unnecessary fight, but... devil. If her plan is to work, though, she'll have to get used to Irathiel's presence.

Pleasantries done, she leans back against Elliot's shoulder for a few moments (careful not to poke him with her horns) and wraps her tail around his waist in a uniquely tiefling gesture of affection.

Irathiel wrote:

"Huh, odd though, you Lady Merixia look, as far as facial features are concerned very very much alike a Gylou I have the... dubious privilige of knowing. Or maybe the multiverse was just and she bote the dust, but I doubt it, her philosophy of never having a remotely fair fight, if she has any fight at all, likely did wonders for her life expectancy.

"Obviously, you got horns, and she got tentacles, and her eyes are like, cold and very very dead but you get the idea. That one is also on the other side of the *fight vs torture* spectrum from me, and at least 10.000 years ago was one of Doloras main *researchers*."

"Ugh, really?" The cleric heaves a heartfelt sigh. "I thought for sure my infernal ancestor was an erinyes, maybe even a munagola. I didn't get any of the 'clever and manipulative' infernal tendencies. What I got was the craving for battle and destruction." And the anger issues, of course. "If I have to be part devil, why couldn't it be a warrior devil instead of a coward who hides behind her minions?" She might be whining. Just a tiny bit. But really, a gylou?

Verene Tanaquil wrote:
"I think I can speak for us all when I say you do not owe us your servitude. However, we would of course welcome your help in fighting the demons," Verene says cautiously, with another glance at Merixia. She takes one of the strange drinks from the reptilian protean and drinks just a sip as she begins looking over the bisected kalavakus for any things of value. In fact she is not at all sure that Merixia will want the help of a representative of Hell. "Merixia, do you think it would be possible to free this remaining lillend and the creature in the black gem right away, with a spell to grant the souls freedom of movement?"

"I honestly have no idea. I'd have to try it and see." Alas, duty calls. Somebody has to break the news about Ragathiel to the oddly friendly munagola, and Merixia is his cleric. She steps away from her boyfriend and accepts a mystery cocktail from Xyraxherax. If it was dangerous, Verene wouldn't be drinking it, and she wants some fortification for this conversation. Taking a sip- ooh, that's tasty- she straightens up and looks Irathiel in the eye.

"Okay, now for the news I mentioned earlier. Ragathiel defected from Hell millennia ago at the very least. I hadn't known that he ever served Asmodeus, as a matter of fact. He is now known as the General of Vengeance, the empyreal lord of chivalry, duty, and righteous vengeance, and he commands one of the armies of Heaven. It took countless heroic deeds on his part to prove himself- and atone for his actions under Hell's command, I'm guessing- including a fight with Dispater in which Ragathiel lost a wing. He fought his father to a draw, though, which is impressive. Upon accepting him into their ranks, the gods of Heaven transformed him into an angel." Merixia knocks back a good half of her drink.

"I know that this is quite a shock for you. You are not obligated to serve us, but I would hold off on going back to Hell, at least for now. I can't imagine that they would welcome one of Ragathiel's commanders back with open arms. They can't get to him, but they might decide to take their anger with him out on you." She studies Irathiel's reaction for a moment. "So. You have several paths before you. You could maintain your loyalty to Hell, return and take your chances. You could make your way on your own, elsewhere in the planes. One of the powers of Axis might be willing to hire you as a mercenary, for example, or perhaps one of the genie kingdoms would. Or... you could maintain your loyalty to your lord and follow Ragathiel's example. He's proven that an outsider can change if they want it badly enough." Merixia offers her a small but sympathetic smile. "While you decide, you're more than welcome to stick around and kill demons."

Without an enemy present, Merixia's rage drains away, leaving her in the calm, almost floaty state she experienced the day before. The constant undercurrent of anger over the existence of evil and injustice is quiet, at least for now. She pulls out a rag to clean the demon guts off her sword as she responds to their new... allies? Maybe? Beings who are not hostile for the moment. Given that they still have a whole lot of demons to clean out of this keep, including whoever is conducting an evil ritual in the dungeons, Merixia would like to keep it that way. At least for now.

"I am Merixia, a priestess of Ragathiel and member of the Mendevian Crusade." She's not about to give out her full name to a powerful devil, given that tieflings can be called and bound the same as any other outsider. Deeming her blade clean enough for now, she sheathes it and continues. "It must have been a very long time, given that I've never heard of Xar-Azmask. Academics aren't my strong point, but I did study the major demon lords in preparation for the Crusade." She turns to the people behind her. "Verene, Thesius, help me out here?" Timeline first, break the news about Ragathiel's change of allegiance to Irathiel second.

I can? Awesome! The tentacles are probably holding him down in kind of a hunched position, right? Decapitation is always a classic, let’s go with that. If Merixia can’t reach high enough for that, she’ll get him in the chest, possibly through one of the wounds we made carving out soul gems.

Wulfric

The bard prudently retreats a few steps to take shelter behind Merixia. He continues his stirring tale of Iomedae's victory over a demonic host the whole time, demons notwithstanding, because Wulfric Stonehelm is a seasoned bard of the Crusade and a little thing like nearly being soul-drained by a kalavakus is not going to stop him.

Move and maintain Inspire Courage +2.

Merixia

A feral grin crosses Merixia's face as the last soul gem lands on the floor. "Time to die, slaver!" She raises her sword for a devastating overhand blow, then comes back around for another strike.

It's Destructive Smite time! Full attack, let's see if we can get the job done.

Attack 1 + Rage + Inspire Courage + heroism + divine favor: 1d20 + 13 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 13 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 24

Attack 2 + Rage + Inspire Courage + heroism + divine favor: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 21

Damage 2 + Mythic Risky Strike + Rage + Inspire Courage + weapon of awe + divine favor: 1d10 + 9 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 9 + 6 + 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 = 26

Congrats on your successful move, Lili! Been there, done that, it sucks every single time.

On this end of the internet, I started making some Christmas gifts and discovered that my jojoba oil leaked all over a storage tub full of bottles and other small items. Then in the process of cleaning that up, the benzoin resinoid (sticky, fragrant, very tenacious) leaked. Today was the oilpocalypse. My small precision scale is still kind of greasy, but the user manual got soaked with oil and I don't dare throw it out, so I'll just have to keep it in a baggie and clean the scale every time I use it.

I'm fine with botting Wulfric.

Haha, Merixia really doesn’t want to add another powerful enemy to the mix right now. She is understandably wary of Irathiel, but right now she’s helping with a difficult fight and that counts for a lot. They can sort everything else out later.

I agree that us botting Elliot and Azira would be the best option right now. I hope their players are all right.

"Elliot!" Merixia's grip on her sword tightens as fury threatens to overwhelm her. She pushes it down; not yet.

Celestial:
"Azira, get your sword! I'll keep this scum busy." Fun fact, the word 'scum' in Celestial is just 'fiend' with an intonation of disgust. The kalavakus probably speaks the tongue of angels, know your enemy and all, but the cultists and weaker demons might not.

Okay. Now it's time to embrace her rage. The righteous wrath of Merixia's divine patron fills her mind, lending her supernatural strength and toughness as she steps forward to slash at the protean's gem where it lies embedded in the demon's hide.

RAAAAGE! +4 to Str and Con, +2 to Will saves, -2 AC. 5 ft step and full attack to try and cut the protean's gem out of the kalavakus. I think that's a sunder? But Merixia is aiming for the skin around the gem rather than the gem itself.

I didn't do much today, but I went to the zoo's adult Halloween night with my family yesterday! It was cold but lots of fun. Costumes, drinks, candy, nocturnal animals out and about. If you ever do an evening event at the zoo, make sure to visit the reptile house, lots of animals there were active that you don't usually see during the day.

Also I fell even more in love with Chinese hot pot. Best hot pot restaurant ever, their broth is AMAZING.

Merixia stares up at the newly released fiend- a munagola, according to Verene, which means that she is most definitely a munagola. Wow. I did not see that one coming. She thought for sure that the voice from the red gem was an angel or archon. Well... again, strange bedfellows and all that.

Huh? the newcomers voice speaks in your head I guess the Lord Ragathiel has pact servants now? Suits him much better then it does the big A. and dont worry too much, I am from the "kick all the demon ass" department, not from the "corrupt all the mortals" department.

Wait. Wait wait wait. This Irathiel claims to have served Ragathiel in Hell before he defected to Heaven, and apparently that was a thing! Merixia knew her patron was half devil, of course, but not that he had actually served in the armies of Hell. Wow. His atonement and redemption are even more impressive now.

That's something to contemplate later. Irathiel seems sincere in her desire to kill the kalavakus, and right now that's the most important thing. You must have been trapped in there for a long time. Stick around and talk to us before you leave, there are some things you really need to know about Ragathiel and Hell. Going into that now would only distract the munagola, and if breaking her gem injured her that badly, a distraction is the last thing she needs.

Who's up in the initiative order?

Hi folks! I’m hanging in there, hope you’re all doing well.

I like the new tone! This kalavakus is a worthy foe. Evil for righteous smiting, challenging to fight without one-shotting us, and the soul gems are a novel touch. Having to cut them out without breaking them or being mauled by their user adds an extra layer of complexity that makes the fight interesting. And of course, him being a slaver demon makes Merixia extra motivated to kill him.

Cut the soulgems out? During a fight with a powerful demon? Great. Sure. Why the hell not. "I can try. Give me a few seconds, I'll need a little more power if I'm going to cut into the demon's skin."

While Merixia isn't sure that a good-aligned weapon is necessary here, it was for the vrock, so it follows that another powerful demon would also require a blessed cold iron weapon. She steps back a few feet and raises her holy symbol with her off hand, concentrating on the sea of stars that represents the myriad of spells the wardstone gave her access to. There, that one! In her mind's eye, she grabs the star, and suddenly she knows the words to the spell. As she recites the sacred phrases, the cleric's sword begins to glow golden.

...You know, before she commits to this plan, she should probably ask the trapped Ragathielite a question or two.

If I cut your gem out of the demon's skin, is there a way to release you? And I don't want to hear any of this trash about 'ending your dishonor'. There is no shame in fighting your best and being defeated by a more powerful enemy, only in giving up. The fact that you made the effort to let me know what the gems do tells me that you haven't given up.

Whoops, I forgot to update my header. My current AC is 28. Merixia takes 14 damage from the arrow, as the crit did not confirm. The gargoyle does not hit at all.

AC math:
10 + 10 armor + 1 Dex + 2 deflection (magic circle vs evil) + 5 natural (ironskin). FYI, I have a mild form of dyscalculia, which is basically dyslexia with numbers. I will NEVER take offense if you correct my math! Please speak up if you see an error, I know I am prone to mistakes.

Reflex 1 + heroism + magic circle vs evil: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 4 + 2 + 2 = 25

Reflex 2 + heroism + magic circle vs evil: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 4 + 2 + 2 = 14

Merixia's communal protection vs fire absorbs 15 points of damage out of 120.

Merixia is so, so thankful for her shiny new armor. Almost all of the cultists' and gargoyle's attacks bounce right off... almost. One lucky arrow lodges itself between her gorget and breastplate with a sharp burst of pain. It doesn't feel like it hit anything vital, though, so she can ignore it for now.

"Die!" The cleric brings her sword to bear on the gargoyle in a pair of heavy two-handed strikes.

Ugh, brimoraks. Thanks to Verene's excellent memory for voices, though, they have advance warning this time. Merixia nods and follows Azira into the room, beckoning the others to follow. "Everyone except Verene, huddle up around Azira so I can cast the spell."

Once the group is within arm's reach, Merixia reaches into the sea of stars within her mind, finding the spell she needs. The words pop into her mind with a now-familiar abruptness. She touches herself and then each of her friends, reciting the sacred words with her holy symbol held aloft.

Are those stairs in F3b? Might be worth seeing if we can go up and get the high ground. If I were defending that kind of entry, I'd have archers up high.

Hey everyone, apologies for the silence. I've thought about it and in the end i would like to continue playing (if that is all right with everyone including our new gm). Speaking of which, Thanks lila for taking over the GM role. I have a lot of backtrack reading to do in the discussion it seems but i will try to get to it asap.

HURRAY! I’m so glad to have you back! :D

Oh, dont worry, you will find someone you will be interested in... not technically redeeming, more like restoring, really soon.

As far as useing profession chaplain for redemption, yes, in some cases, no in some others. It depends on indidivual circumstances.

If someone is evil because he/she/it lacks the courage to not be evil (technically the case for interestingly enough many demons), then the example of Ragathiel, whose areas of concern very much include courage and bravery, can work pretty well.

If someone is evil out of genuine loyalty to an evil cause or extremely egotistic pragmatism, then Ragathiel is less effective.

If the motivation for evil is vengeance, Ragathiel is relevant to the conversation, but it will strongly depend on the individual circumstances.

Makes total sense, thank you for clarifying. :) I'm just glad to find a game that will make use of a Profession skill, haha!

You are correct, those are both very Merixia things to do. I wouldn't expect Profession (chaplain) to improve hostile parties' opinions of her or to gather information, those are both jobs for our Diplomacy experts. I don't see Ragathiel as having confession, since there aren't enough Ragathielites in most parts of the world to have an organized religion. If you've violated his code, both you and he know it, shape up or suffer your patron deity's displeasure.

Could I use Profession (chaplain) for guiding an NPC's path to redemption, even if they're not interested in converting to Ragathiel? We already have several NPCs in the process of atonement. It would be nice to be able to help with that.

It's a relief to know I won't be making Fly checks every round! But it sounds like it will come up enough to be worth putting ranks in the skill. What's the point of having the ability to fly if you're not good enough at it to do cool stuff?

New and Improved Skill Ranks!

4 class + 1 FCB = 5/level

Adventuring Skills:
Fly 8 + 1 Dex - 3 ACP = 6
Heal 8 + 3 class + 5 Wis + 2 healer's kit = 18
Knowledge (religion) 8 + 3 class + 1 Int = 12
Perception 8 + 3 class + 1 trait + 5 Wis = 17
Sense Motive 8 + 3 class + 2 racial + 2 blessing + 5 Wis = 20

Background Skills:
Craft (armor) 8 + 3 class + 1 Int = 12
Linguistics (Abyssal & Celestial) 2 + 3 class + 1 Int = 6
Profession (chaplain) 6 + 3 class + 5 Wis = 14

Since Azira, Elliot and I have either Legendary Item weapons or class feature weapons, Craft (weapons) probably won't be that useful. Craft (armor) might be. Lili, I took your suggestion of Profession (chaplain) in hopes that it will be useful during the Kingmaker-ish phase of the game.

Everyone should have a protection from evil ward as we continue. Merixia, was there nothing in what you overheard about how long before this binding was complete? It would be good to know what sort of time constraint we are under if we want to prevent the completion of the spell."

"I already have magic circle against evil active. And no, I didn't hear anything about a timeframe. I would be much more comfortable if we cleared the ground floor of the keep, especially the main entrance, before venturing underground. The last thing we need is to be caught in a pincer." Never leave live enemies behind you. That's just asking for trouble. And if they clear the main entrance, the rest of the army can back them up.

@Meri regarding mythic power attack, yes, but having "mythic risky strike" still costs you a mythic feat.

--Take fates favored and crusader, I dont mind at all (and they even make a whole lot of sense narratively for meri). Some of my bad guy/girls have traits and I sure has hell didnt check that for them. And I think for stuff taken with extra background traits the restriction doesnt apply anyway (I may be RAW wrong).

I already have Mythic Power Attack, so I'll just rename it Mythic Risky Strike.

Yay, thank you! Fate's Favored is excellent for those of us who rely on divine favor/prayer/divine power, and Crusader is tailor made for WotR. Good stuff. Totally worth a feat.

Am I going to need Fly checks if I'm using shield of wings or angelic aspect to fly? The Fly skill description says you need to make a Fly check to avoid falling after being attacked if you're flying using wings.

@Lili: Merixia's AC with her standard buffs: 21 armored + 2 deflection magic circle vs evil + 5 natural ironskin = AC 28. Saves are correct without buffs. With buffs, she has +2 resistance from magic circle against evil and +2 morale from heroism. (She got the knight's pennon of battle and hung it on her backpack.)

Ugh, Fate's Favored and Crusader are both Faith traits, I can't have both. Boooo.
