I'm putting together a 5th level Conjurer for Raiders of Shrieking Peak and I really want to add more spells to my book than the ones you get for free from leveling. Besides the cost (which is fine), there's an Arcana skill check. What's the protocol for this kind of situation when starting a character higher than level 1? Do I need to just have a list of the spells I want to scribe (and enough cash available on the PC) and roll Arcana at the table in front of the GM before we start playing?

I was just thinking of running Crypt of the Everflame for my debut PbP GM experience when I saw your post. I'm definitely willing, but it looks like GM letsuna has dibs. I'm a ***** PFS GM; just recently discovered the joy of PbP. I've been playing enough that I'm feeling ready to GM.

Greetings, adventurers! Longtime PFS-er, newly interested in PbP! I have 26 characters between levels 2-15, and as much as I GM locally, I never get to play them enough. I'm looking forward to adventuring with you all!

Say the PC sneaky scout has the spell "message" active. The PC has detected an enemy and whispers the presence and location of the enemy to other PC's via the spell. The enemy gets a perception check of DC 25 to notice the whispering, succeeds on the check, and becomes aware of the scout. If the enemy wants to attack the scout, regular combat initiative begins, since they are both aware of each other.

But would the rest of the PC's party (on the receiving end of the whispered message) get a surprise round, since they are aware of the enemy combatant, but the enemy combatant is not aware of them?

What if the scout had reported the enemy's presence and location to the rest of the party long before, and was only detected by the enemy while trying to sneak away?
