Male Human Paladin 1

Ahh... please don't mind me.

I'm suffering from character/storyline hypersensitive attachment.

Good to be selected. I know it was a difficult task for you. I'll get up my alias here soon.

I meant whip and spiked gauntlet, sorry. not whip and short sword.

DM:

TWF: As part of his slavery to the Shae, Shalastar had to learn to be the instrument of both pain and pleasure, using tools for both. In Shalastar's case, using the whip or a nine-tails in one hand, and a sword, dagger, or feather in the other. I didn't want to make the S&M too apparent, immediately, though, since I'm not sure how the other players would feel about that. :P And I don't intend to say anything too blatant in the game thread either. I basically intend to eventually go whip/short sword once I get the proficiency in the whip.

As for the Priest of Asmodeus, I was hoping one of the other player characters might have stepped up for that role. But perhaps he was captured at the same time I was and has already been executed.

Also, Shalastar has the Charming trait.

I'm not sure, but I think we get the usual two. And the mandatory crime we choose counts as one of those traits.

I thought the crime and the sin were our two traits.

Beautiful Form (Ex) Shalastar has +1 on charisma-based checks when dealing with anyone who could potentially feel physical desire.
Desire and Pain (Sp) Shalastar can deliver a melee touch attack that causes a target to either freeze with desire (dazed for one round) or experience agonizing pain over his physical beauty (1d4 damage +1/2 sorcerer level). He must choose the effect before the attack roll. Once a creature has been affected by desire and pain, it is immune to its effects for 24 hours. Shalastar can use this ability 8 times per day.
Eschew Materials (Feat) Shalastar can cast spells that would normally require a material component costing 1 gp or less without needing that component.
Emissary (Ex) Once per day, Shalastar can roll twice when making a Bluff or Diplomacy check and take the better roll.
Sedition (Ex) Shalastar has been involved with a group actively seeking to remove King Markadian V from power. He has +1 to Bluff skill checks and has +1 Leadership if he ever takes the Leadership feat.
Sins of Lust (Ex) Shalastar is vulnerable to enchantments, and suffers a -2 penalty to Will saves. Morale and emotion-based penalties are increased by 1.

World Walker (Ex) Shalastar has spent most of his time on the material plane. He has +1 racial bonus on Knowledge (nature), Knowledge (local), and a +2 racial bonus on Stealth skill checks.

Appearance
A well muscled, lithe youth of 25 years has pale skin lightly dusted with powdered amethyst behind his tattered prison clothes. His hair is long and voluminous, dyed crimson, blue, and purple in a sweeping pattern that accents his face and solid blue-green eyes. Stunningly beautiful, the young man seems to have a fey, unnatural beauty that has so far managed to keep the guards from bruising and darkening said beauty.

History
Shalastar is a fetchling that walks the boundaries of the two worlds, used to the power of shadows and now addicted to the pleasures of the material world, once he escaped his own slavery in the clutches of a devious (if beautiful) Shae, who may have been his mother. Freed by a Cleric of Asmodeus, Shalastar is uncertain whether he should be completely grateful for being taken from his paradise-prison, but has agreed to help the cleric with his plans to fuel a rebellion against the ruling monarch. For the crime of sedition, Shalastar has been brought to the prison, to eventually be drawn and quartered. His guards have thus far been somewhat kind to him, but Shalastar knows what they have planned for him. He is not certain if his powers will save him on the final day.

Personality
Most of his childhood and adolescence, Shalastar has served willingly at the side of his mistress, the Shae Levinare. As such, he has learned to be weak-willed and impotent in the face of such divine authority. It was only recently that he has been freed from such a distasteful existence by the Lawbringer, handing individualism back to him as he was freed from being the Slave of Shadows.

Sovereign Court

Thanks, I will try to get a character up here in the next 30 minutes or so. I am thinking of a fetchling, but the negative to Wisdom, with the penalty of Lust, looks like it would make my Will save vs. enchantments -4.... Well, that's actually fitting for the character since I feel like he was once the slave of a Shae, and fetchlings are fawning sycophants most of the time anyway. There's enough power in the magic of lust, I won't need no clerical powers. (with a low wisdom, they probably wouldn't be that good anyway... :P)

Sovereign Court

I'd like to play a Sorcerer of Lust (Its a 3pp bloodline I can PM the details to you.)

Charisma 18
Wisdom 8
Strength 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Constitution 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Dexterity 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
Intelligence 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Sovereign Court

For the lawful good or the chaotic good character?

The chaotic good character actually suggested going to the temple of Iomedae to get a high ranking cleric to intervene, then retracted that in their next post, going back to a devil-may-care attitude where each individual is free to do what they want, and apologizing for taking on an intervening position.

Sovereign Court

Thank you, thats what we decided to do, mostly... I was just worried that there might be a moral obligation to control the galavanting character.

Sovereign Court

Urk...

Alright, I'll try to be vague here. (Its an ongoing experience here on the boards).

Let's say, for example, that the lawful good person charges ahead into a socially awkward scene, does something drastically public and politically dangerous, riling up the city guards and letting the whole city suffer as a result of his actions. The chaotic good character was saying "Let's wait and see what happens." but the lawful good character basically ignored this advice and charged in. Of course, the chaotic good character immediately goes into stealth to avoid detection and association with the 'stupid one'.

So now, the rest of the group is trying to strategize around the new political atmosphere that the lawful good character basically had caused and he's completely ignoring what the rest of the party wants to do and rushing around doing all sorts of things. (It's incredibly annoying).

So my question is, at what point does the chaotic good person leave the 'let everyone do what they want to do' argument and take more decisive actions?

Sovereign Court

Would a chaotic good character make a citizen's arrest of a lawful good character that was endangering himself and society?

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

I would love to get this game started up again, if anyone is willing to DM. So far, all but one of my pbp games has died. :( Including two Council of Thieves campaigns. Arrrggghhh!

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius agrees with the cleric.

"I also advise mercy. Let the goblin return to its lair and let us move on. Perhaps they will rethink their evil ways."

Sorry to hear about your problems. I could go on about mine but they're not that exciting. lol. Just bump the board when you can come back.

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius climbs up out of the sewage into the space to the left of the party, and does what he can to aid his companions without becoming involved in the melee.

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius hesitates as a wave of nausea washes over him. He could stand the smell; he was used to it, but this was something different. The sting at his side where the skeleton had sliced him with a rusting blade before flared again momentarily and Marcellius grows weasy.

"By the Gods, what is it now?"

Marcellius shakes off the momentary pain, stepping forward and drawing his blade up for an attack at a nearby goblin. 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

With a grim nod, Marcellius drops his torch into a nearby space, hoping it to be dry enough that the flame will not extinguish, and pulls out his sword.

"So it's to be combat then."

Marcellius steps out into the sewage again, marching up to the closest surviving goblin (if reachable) and swinging.

Fortitude save 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7

Attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13, 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

It really doesn't matter that much. With that initiative roll (Marcellius's hesitation), the goblins will all be dead before he can act. :P

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Initiative 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0

Unfamiliar with the goblin language, Marcellius hesitates as he moves forward to an open space where he can see the goblins better.

Using detect evil on the goblins.

"Does anyone speak their language? Perhaps we can find a diplomatic solution."

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius holds the torch in front of his face, hoping the flames will burn away most of the noxious vapors.

"What is it now? Some other foul undead? Something that should be dead and rotting by the scent of it."

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Perception - 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21

"Why do you suppose there are undead skeletons down here? I mean, necromancy is relatively uncommon, one would think."

OOC-Rules:
LOL! The other PBP Council of Thieves had the same problem. If a skeleton has DR 5/bludgeoning, it means they have damage resistance 5 against all weapon types except bludgeoning. Apparently sharp blades are more likely to go through bones without damaging them than bludgeoning weapons which impact the bones with enough force to shatter them. For future reference. :P

Ankara, I doubt that your weapon will have any blood on it, unless you've been fighting something besides skeletons.

Marcellius turns to find his torch as he sheathes his sword. The torch's flame sputtered on the moist stone, but he retrieved the torch and looked around for the sword drawing that Janiven was having difficulty finding.

"Do not be afraid, Janiven. The gods of light will not abandon us. Have faith that we will succeed, and do not let panic pull you from the path of providence."

Perception check.
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10

Male Human Paladin 1

Question about channeling energy. I thought that channeling positive energy both harmed undead and cured the living, as channeling negative energy heals the undead and harms the living? Just asking because the previous channeling I think should have cured Ankara some.

Although reeling in pain, Marcellius grits his teeth in anger and takes the time to line up another powerful blow at the skeleton's skull, swinging at the undead with precision.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 161d8 + 5 - 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 - 5 = 1

He is surprised when his sword pierces the skeleton's eyesocket but only a chip of bone breaks off.

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

1d20+2=6, 1d8+4=12

Marcellius swings at the skeleton in front of him, but his blade ricochets off the stone corner and almost falls from his grasp, missing the skeleton completely.

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Ankara: Undead can now be hit by critical attacks. Roll your weapon damage for the crit.
Ember: Love the map. What program did you use for that?

Initiative (1d20-1=18)

Following quickly behind Ankara, Marcellius drops his torch in H6 (hopefully able to retrieve it later), draws his longsword, and steps into the sewage in G5 (no attack of opportunity since the skeleton already used it against Ankara), cleaving at the skeletons in G4 and H5.

1d20+2, 1d8+4=[11, 2], [5, 4], 1d20+2, 1d8+4=[20, 2], [5, 4]

It the first attack hits (13, 9 slashing -5 DR= 4 damage), the second attack is a critical threat

1d20+3=16-1=15 to check if critical. (1d8=3 )
Damage if critical (12 slashing -5 DR = 7 damage)

Here's a fortitude save against any effects for stepping into the sewage. Fortitude Save (1d20+3=17)

Marcellius accepts the vials carefully, putting them into one of the side pouches of his backpack.

"Mistress Janiven, do not be too angry about the tavern. The Gods of Light recognize sacrifice when they see it. I think it is very likely that you will be rewarded with something of even greater value than the tavern in the near future."

Noting the dark, dank, smelly area, Marcellius reaches into his backpack and finds a torch to light.

"It's a miracle that you have a safehouse. I am surprised that you are this organized already. How long have you been planning this meeting?"

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1
Ankara wrote:

At Marcellius' offer, Ankara just grunts agreement, "You do that." He offers Janiven and Morosino a hand down the trapdoor, ushering them out with haste. And, uh, anyone else I forgot...

Once they are clear, he tosses the lanterns into the main room, so that the oil in them splashes out across the floor, and then flings burning coals from the remains of the hearthfire onto them, before hopping into the tunnel himself, saying to Marcellius just before his head goes out of sight, "Better hurry on behind."

Saddened by the fiery destruction of the tavern, Marcellius realizes it is not the time to discuss legal philosophy. After all, many great things had come, and would continue to come, from the ashes of their predecessors.

He protects himself against the building flame with his shield than quickly makes his way down through the trapdoor. He pulls it closed behind him, looking to see if there is a lock or bolting mechanism.

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius takes one last bitter look out the window, then also walks rapidly over to the trapdoor. He turns to Janiven.

"I will go last. Allow me to place myself in danger's way so that you can move ahead with the others."

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius stands up furiously, sweeping his cloak behind him completely as he takes up his shield.

"Hellknights! Here, now?!"

He looks out the window at the scourge of Asmodeus, his jaw stiffening in anger.

"Phoenix Fire! They seek out Hell? Let us help them on their way! To Arms! To Arms, I say!"

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius hesitates to respond as he looks down in remorse. Oaths and vows were sometimes difficult to maintain, but he had not intended to be rude.

"Forgive my rudeness, Mistress Janiven. You have provided the best for your guests, and it is not my place to question or refuse such hospitality. But I fear that my vows to my Goddess..." Marcellius hesitates, uncertain if he should continue. "To myself if Her divine essence is too far beyond my reach. My vows do not allow me to enjoy life as other men do."

Marcellius glances at the wooden wine cup he had brought in with him. "In a city of decay such as this one, it is all too easy to forget. To forget vows. To forget life. To forget that the taint of Shadow can be fought against. Aroden's statue stands forgotten. The temples of light are fallen. And we struggle as we can to remember the way things once were."

Marcellius lowers his voice to a hoarse, emotional whisper.

"And the way they can be once again. It is a part of my Oath to Arazni to lead by example. I have failed in that oath, numerous times it seems, and I still await the punishment that was meted out to my parents before me. Perhaps it is because the Red Crusade still lives within my heart. To bring Light and Order into existence by the sacrifices of my life's blood."

Marcellius drinks again from the tankard of ale before him, setting it down with a heavy thud as he draws within himself.

"I would make what sacrifices I can to see this city brought back to its beautiful glory. Temples devoted to the deities of light once filled this place. Arazni's crusaders among them."

He leans back in his chair, raising a hand to his face again as he wipes the back of his hand across his eyes.

"Now all that remains of this city's sacred honor are the empty chasses of the Lost and Forgotten. The families that once were known for their nobility are corrupted. And in all places where Light once shown bravely, only dust and shadows remains."

Marcellius muffles a sob, swallowing bitterly, angrily.

"If now is the time to act to see the darkness ended. I pledge my life and honor to seeing it done."

He sniffs, trying to dry his face again, though it is beset with uncertainty and no small amount of pain.

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius waits until everyone else has grabbed a portion of food before cutting off a moderately sized sliver of tasteless white meat for himself.

After a few bites, he begins to realize that the chicken was roasted a little too perfectly. Even the "dry" places were rich in flavor.

"My compliments to the chef as well. This is exquisitely cooked. A little too rich for my tastes though. Perhaps there is something more plain?"

The armored gentleman lifts up his plate and offers the untouched pieces of meat to Sovegny. "Perhaps a lady of grace and beauty would be willing to indulge?"

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius sniffs the ale, then takes a swallow.

"You're right. Not a luxury. But in these times, the luxuries are in the hands of devils and the priests of Asmodeus. I am honored to share this non-luxury with you all."

He reaches forward for the now empty wooden goblet he had brought in with him, foul symbols of the Chelish empire carved into its design. It was a typical street vendor's cup, but Marcellius set it down again in obvious distaste.

Marcellius turns to Janiven.

"Thank you for your hospitality. What you have provided for us is more than enough."

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

"You must remember, Mistress Sovegny, this empire is ruled by devils. The high evil scourge of light and life. I knew that many sacrifices would have to be made to restore the empire to its former glory, but I did not account for an outright assault against the government. But.... if this is what must be done, then let it be so."

Marcellius grips the goblet that had been set before him, lifting it up and setting it down further away.

"And until the time comes when righteous men again rule this Empire, I shall forswear all luxuries in the effort of this pursuit."

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius sits down at the table, sweeping his red cloak to the side and revealing the well-kept silver chain mail armor. He pushes the hair that had fallen over his forehead to one side, keeping a wary eye on the room.

"I am Marcellius Voralion, a paladin of the Red Crusader. Preserver of light and justice until Her Restoration. I was invited here by a Garundi, but he did not say he would be coming himself - only that I would meet friends devoted to a sacred cause."

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius bows his head respectfully, and enters the tavern behind Janiven.

"I did not want to intrude. But I can see now that you are correct."

He turns to the one who addressed him earlier.

"As for the wooden shield. It has been in my family for generations. The carvings have worn down over time, but it used to be quite beautiful."

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius's dark red cloak is draped over his chest and shoulders, doing little to hide the silver and golden glint of metal and the sword that hangs easily at his side.

He looks in through the tavern window, noticing that two other men had stopped outside and were talking to one another as though they knew each other. He remains silent as he listens to them, trying to determine if they were part of the new friends of order he had heard about.

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

Marcellius waits until midday, when the final gleam of sunlight reflecting off of the statue of Aroden is replaced by the shadow from his noble brow. With a sigh, the disaffected paladin turns away, keeping a wary eye on the still remnants of the shrines that surround the statue. A sparkle of light pulls his attention to a shattered stained glass window, the winged sword of Arazni glittering in the shadows.

With no lack of emotion, the young paladin lifts a gloved fist to his eye, wiping away at the dust that had settled there.

"I will not fail you! Not like my father. You will be restored, my Lady. I swear it!"

Marcellius stiffens his jaw, resolved to the fate that lay before him, and left the large circle of abandoned shrines. He stopped at a street vendor for a bit of chicken, some bread, and a goblet of wine, then made his way to the Rego Screpa

DM:

Marcellius is thoughtful for a moment, his gaze turned upward to the statue as it seems to set afire in the bright yellow sunlight as it reflects off the old gilding of a broken down temple.

"If your friends would be willing to put up with an old romantic fool, Slavo, I would definitely be interested in joining them. I am called Marcellius..."

Marcellius lowers his voice.

"I am a paladin of the Red Crusader, a faith which most of the world believes to be a lost cause... Perhaps much the same as the faith of Aroden."

Marcellius turns from the statue and faces Slavo.

"I would be honored to help bring life and vitality back to the city once again. If your friends are interested in bringing back the sacred light that the city seems to have abandoned, I would be considered one of them."

Sovereign Court

Male Human Paladin 1

DM:

Marcellius looks around, surprised that the Garundi is speaking to him.

I... I too come to the statue for inspiration. It is a reminder to me of the way things once were in this city, in this land, and how it could be again. And I am always hopeful that He might return and set things right.

Marcellius pauses and looks around the derelict circle of shrines.

Even though I know it will take time and effort.

Thanks, that's helpful!

Sovereign Court

Or anybody can answer. I was just joshing about Nethys being the only one that can answer.

Sovereign Court

Dear Nethys,

I have a few questions about equipment. First of all, I'm assuming that a shield can be carried on one's back, or attached to a backpack, and that it takes a move action to ready said shield from this location. But how long would it take to put it back?

Secondly, are there magical vests and vestments that do not take up a body slot? I have heard rumors of such things.

Sovereign Court

I'm a Paladin in the Society, but I intend to make my second level Bard (with a focus in Oratory, lol), 1- because I think it would be cool to be a Paladin-knight figure that can inspire courage, etc. and 2-because many people are complaining about how underbalanced it is and I'm interested in seeing if that's the case. :)

With a headband of alluring charisma, I can see how Versatile performance would be a huge boon, especially for a big buff to my Sense Motive skill (which would normally rely on Wisdom). The ability to cast Bard spells in light armor and shield (which I have as a Paladin anyway) is pretty cool to me.

I'm looking forward to it.

Based on that yes, they could. However, the traditional theme of the paladin isn't one of an individual making a decision to take the class on his own; traditionally, they were called to serve, and as such there had to be a god that would actually do the calling. A dead, or in this case undead, deity couldn't perform such an act, and you might run into some stiff opposition to the idea despite the newer concept; with the shift to heavily Charisma-based paladins one can argue their abilities are granted through sheer personality, but they remain divine champions and that usually indicates that their power would be granted by a divine source.

Yeah, I know.

I heard all the arguments against it when I first suggested it for a PBP game. Didn't make it in, but I thought it was one of the coolest ideas I'd come up with, I decided to hold onto it.... "Eventually, we'll find a way to get her back!"

Does it say You must have a god. In them words no what it does say is "Called paladins, these noble souls dedicate their swords and lives to the battle against evil. Knights, crusaders, and law-bringers, paladins seek not just to spread divine justice but to embody the teachings of the virtuous deities they serve."
