I would like to apply with Liu Na Pei, tavern waitress at the Rusty Dragon, Best Friend of Ameiko, and secret bodyguard of the Kaijitsu family. Liu Na's stats and background are in this profile. Full Disclosure: I have participated in 2 Jade Regent PbP's here on the Paizo site - I had to drop out of the first one 1.5 years ago due to work commitments... Spoiler:
... just after finishing up in the marshes. The second one stalled last year... Spoiler:
... just as we reached Brinewall Castle. Thanks for your consideration, and best of luck to everyone!
Okay, so 'shortly' turned into 2.5 hours later. I will be so happy when my work schedule drops to part-time. 5. Scenario Response: GM Cello wrote:
Liu Na glides nimbly about the Rusty Dragon's common room; the tavern clientele barely noticing the unassuming presence of the slight waitress. Her violet eyes dart perceptively about the room, reading the mood of the crowd and the body language of the various patrons. Noticing the altercation almost before it begins, she sets down her tray and silently slides up behind the tattooed thug. With a barely audible *snik* a dagger appears in her hand as if by magic, its needle-sharp tip pricking the thug's lower back just above his right kidney. "Settle down, Jorland," she says calmly. "You know Ameiko doesn't tolerate fighting in the Dragon, and she'll dock my pay if I spill your blood on the floor again - she just had it cleaned and polished from the last time." "And you-" she says louder, pointing toward the Varisian bard across the room with a second dagger that appears just as suddenly in her other hand; her first blade never wavering from the thug's back. "I suggest you take your hand from that merchant's purse if you don't want your singing voice to permanently become several octaves higher. You and your 'brother' may think you can trick my friend here into serving as a distraction so you can rob our patrons, but Ameiko holds an even dimmer view of pickpockets in the Dragon than she does fighting. Your boss Jubrayl knows better as well, so tell him to stop sending you amateurs in here to cause problems. I suggest you leave," she says firmly. "NOW." "Jorland, if you would be so kind, please put the man down. Outside, along with his 'brother'," Liu Na requests of the tattooed thug as she withdraws the dagger from his back. She fixes the the bard with a stern glance, silently conveying that he has only mere seconds to depart the tavern unbloodied. "After you take out this trash I'll get you a plate of Bethanna's ginger-spiced salmon and a flagon of winterdrop mead. And Ameiko will be down in a few minutes, everyone," she announces to the now-silent crowd in a slightly louder voice. "I'm sure you all would rather hear her songs anyway instead of that hack's caterwauling. So drink up!"
I realize I'm somewhat late to the party, but I would like to apply with Liu Na Pei, tavern waitress and secret bodyguard for the Kaijitsu family. 1. Character Concept:
Background:
Liu Na Pei, or “Luna” as the folks of Sandpoint call her, currently works as a waitress at the Rusty Dragon. Luna wasn’t always a tavern waitress. Luna’s mother, Kasuri Pei, was a servant of the Kaijitsu family, one of the noble families of Sandpoint. Kasuri’s ancestors were servants of the Kaijitus, and immigrated with them to Sandpoint. Luna resulted from an affair Kasuri had with a visiting elf glass merchant from Magnimar - Kasuri never told Luna his name, nor would anyone else in the Kaijitsu household. Two years after Luna’s birth, the Kaijitsus gave birth to their daughter Ameiko. As children Luna and Ameiko played together and were as close as sisters, even though Luna was destined to be Ameiko’s servant when they both grew to maturity. Luna was quite upset when Ameiko ran away to become an adventurer with Sandru Vhiski, blaming the Varisian for taking her near-sister away from Sandpoint while she was left behind to lead the life of a servant. She was even more upset with Sandru when Ameiko came back a year later changed - purchasing the Rusty Dragon and living in the tavern instead of the Kaijitsu manor, and refusing to talk about what happened to her or her companions during their adventures. Still, when Luna’s mother was killed in a goblin raid on the town and Ameiko’s father was murdered a few days later, Ameiko quickly offered Luna a job as a waitress and a place to live at the Rusty Dragon. Since that time the two young women have become good friends again, although Luna still holds a grudge against Sandru Vhiski and refuses to serve the man or even speak to him whenever his travels bring him back to Sandpoint and the Rusty Dragon. To Luna, Sandru is little better than his Sczarni older brother Jubrayl. What no one living today other than Luna knows is that her ancestors, the Pei family, were more than just servants for the Kaijitsus. For centuries the Pei family were a clan of ninja, serving as secret bodyguards and protectors of the Kaijitsu family. Prior to Luna’s birth, her mother Kasuri was the last of the line. Kasuri taught Luna some of the secrets of the clan, disabling locks and hidden traps throughout the Kaijitsu manor, moving silently across Sandpoint’s rooftops at night, and practicing the beautiful yet deadly combat techniques of the clan’s ancestral fighting fans. With her mother dead, Luna now bears the mantle of secret protector of the last of the Kaijitsus. Appearance:
2. Posting Frequency:
I can usually post a couple of times in the day (in the morning before work and in the evening after the kids go to bed). My posting frequency should increase after mid-August when I drop down to a part-time work schedule. 3. Familiarity with Jade Regent:
I have the AP, but I have not read it in hopes of participating in it as a player.
I have participated in 2 Jade Regent PbP's here on the Paizo site - I had to drop out of the first one due to work commitments just after finishing up in the marshes, and the second one stalled just as we reached Brinewall Castle. 4. Contribution to the Game:
Liu Na would serve primarily as the party skill monkey (perception, stealth, disable device, diplomacy, some knowledge, etc.) and as a secondary combat character. As her abilities increase and she has more ability to deal sneak attack damage, her damage output will hopefully increase. 5. Scenario Response: To be submitted shortly. Thanks for your consideration, and good luck to all applicants!
I'm very sorry for the prolonged radio silence, everyone. This has been a Springtime of multiple illnesses, plus we're in the process of changing jobs, selling our house, buying a house in another state, and moving between now and mid-June. I thought things were getting under control a couple of weeks ago, but that hasn't been the case. Needless to say, I'm going to have to drop out of this PbP. Please feel free to assume that Liu Na stays behind with Ameiko, and that she passes Whispering Shrike to Jorland now that he has proficiency with the wakizashi. Again, my apologies. Good luck and best regards, everyone!
Sorry everyone! Life's been unusually crazy the past couple of weeks. Ameiko aka GM Edwin wrote: Later, Ameiko goes over to Liu and says to her, Liu, I thought this would be a great time to talk and see how you are. Do you believe the tales of Brinewall are true? According to the history, a storm hit and then wham, the place became deserted. Liu Na's brow furrows as she considers what Ameiko said. "I don't know, Ameiko. Your grandfather's letter hinted that he was worried that your family's enemies might somehow attack Brinewell. His letter was dated 4687. You said a sudden storm hit the place and then it became deserted? When did that happen?"
Liu Na suddenly reappears, standing near the body of the slain sorceress. Seeing that Ameiko and Takeshi have their foe well in hand, Liu Na tightens her grip on Whispering Shrike and stalks forward to flank the bandit battling Kalistrine. With a silent snarl the half-elf ninja slices her blade at the unarmed bandit's throat. Attack vs. Bandit 4: 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 5 + 2 = 27 (flanking)
Liu Na flashes Ameiko a smile of thanks and then disappears from view. Swift action to expend one ki point to become invisible using Vanishing Trick. Invisible-Liu Na hefts Whispering Shrike and charges at the sorceress, becoming visible as she slashes the blade at the elf's throat. Full-round action to Charge and attack the sorceress; the sorceress is denied Dex-bonus to AC due to Liu Na being invisible, and subject to sneak attack. Attack vs. flat-footed sorceress: 1d20 + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 2 + 1 + 1 = 17 (charge, inspire, attacking foe that threatens Ameiko)
Liu Na's AC: 14 until her turn next round
Thanks for putting together the treasure list, Kali! Of the items found, Liu Na has the following:
Suggest Jorland keep the MW Cold Iron Wakizashi if he still plans to take Ninja levels, otherwise we could sell it. I'd be happy to hold onto the Ring of Climbing as party treasure if everyone else is okay with that. Liu Na may purchase a MW Composite Shortbow (+1 Str bonus) with her 500 gp from Ameiko; the bow should cost 450 gp.
Suppose we should figure out how we're divvying up the loot from the chest recovered from the skeletons: GMEDWIN wrote:
Liu Na received Whispering Shrike, so I'm good on passing on the other items (that Ring of Climbing might be nice, though!). If no one minds, Liu Na will take one of the potions of Cure Light Wounds.
Liu Na frowns in displeasure at Ameiko's announcement that she will be leaving with Sandru and his caravan for Brinewall Castle - despite the dangers alluded to in the secret letter. "My family has served yours for generations, Ameiko. My duty lies with you and Takeshi. Of course I will join you on your journey," Liu Na replies.
Takeshi Kaijitsu wrote: Takeshi listens to the story about the wakisashi. "Perhaps you should hold onto it Liu Na. It seems appropriate, given it's nature and the work of your family." Liu Na bows her head respectfully to Takeshi as she accepts the weapon. "I am honored to bear Whispering Shrike, the blade of Tsutamu, bodyguard of Rokuro Kaijitsu," she says solemnly. "I only hope that I can fulfill my duty to protect you and Ameiko as honorably as Tsutamu fulfilled his duty to your grandfather."
DC 16 Sense Motive check vs. Ameiko's Bluff: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15 Liu Na listens attentively to Ameiko, amazed that her friend already knew the details about honorable Tsutamu's blade - including its secret compartment. Koya aka GM Edwin wrote: Koya coughs a little and she looks a wee bit weary due to lateness of the evening and meekly says,Did you have a chance to give me friend Megus, my letter? "I'm sorry, Mistress Koya," Liu Na replies with an expression of sadness. "We found Mistress Megus, but she had passed away. We gave her a proper funeral near her home. We left your letter with her, so that your words of friendship could comfort her in the afterlife."
Jorland The Shuhite wrote: I snort at Kalistrine. "Ah Shut up. We brought dis for Amy. It is rightfully her's an she dun hafta give us none of it. Our job was de greenskins an we's done dat. Dis was a fer fun side track we did fer free. Ya didn't hafta join us." I shove the ears at Kalistrine. "Ere! Ye want money so bad takem all an take de credit wy yer at it. I dunt need it. I got what I want." I say as I look pleasantly at the expression on Ameiko's face. "Indeed," Liu Na agrees with Jorland. "I work for Ameiko and Takeshi. We recovered that which rightfully belongs to them - and we got to eliminate the tribe of goblins that killed my mother. I need no other reward than that." The Tian half-elf turns to Ameiko and speaks in a quiet voice only the tavern-owner can hear. Tian Language for Ameiko: "Ameiko, we recovered the wakizashi that Takeshi carries from the animated skeletal remains of your grandfather's bodyguard, the honorable Tsutamu. There's a secret compartment in the blade's pommel containing a letter to your father from your grandfather. The letter says that your family's greatest treasure lies in a secret vault beneath Brinewall Castle, but that your family's ancient enemies lie in wait there. I have not revealed this information to anyone else - including Takeshi."
Liu Na takes Lina's hand to guide the blind oracle as she follows Jorland toward the Rusty Dragon's back entrance, pointedly ignoring Sandru and Kalistrine's discussion. Once inside, she leads Lina into the common room and finds the oracle a seat to enjoy the rest of the show. The half-elf ninja then heads to her room to change into her work clothes, moving through the crowd as unobtrusively as she can. Stealth to not draw attention to herself in her adventuring gear: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19
DC 20 Perception check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 "Look!" Liu Na says, reaching into a large pile of ash and splintered burnt wood and pulling out a mangled, fire-scorched piece of bronze. Brushing of a layer of ash and soot, she reads aloud the Tian characters engraved on the metal, "'Kaijitsu Star'. This is the other ship from the Kaijitsu convoy that was lost 25 years ago. But I wonder what happened? It's only been burned within the last couple of weeks."
"I'm good with heading back to Walthus' house. We can check out that other shipwreck if it's on the way," Liu Na suggests. "But before we leave, I'd appreciate it if we gave the honorable Tsutamu and the other skeletons in these caves a proper burial. They continued to fulfill their duty even after death. They deserve to be buried with respect so that they may finally rest in peace."
For GMEDWIN:
Liu Na does not announce that she found the key on Tsutamu's body. She palms the key and hides it on her person; since a key is an extraordinarily small object, she gets a +4 bonus on her Sleight of Hand check to conceal it per the PRD.
Liu Na's Sleight of Hand check to hide the key: 1d20 + 7 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 7 + 4 = 28 Liu Na is fully in "Kaijitsu family bodyguard" mode after reading the letter and learning of the threats to Ameiko and Takeshi implied therein, and is willing to do whatever she feels she needs to in order to protect what she sees as Ameiko's interests. "The honorable Tsutamu guarded that chest even after his death. That means whatever it contains is Kaijitsu property as well. We need to take it back to Ameiko; she can get someone to open it and then decide what she wants to do with it. I'm sure she'll reward us well for returning it to her family," Liu Na replies to Kalistrine.
Kalistrine wrote: Kalistrine slumps and sits down on the chest. She is still bleeding from several large gashes and she looks exhausted. "What's going on here? Huh?" she asks testily. "How come he was the only one of these things that talked? And what does it have to do with you two?" she points at Takeshi and Liu with one clawed finger. "The talking skeleton was all that remained of Tsutamu, the man who left the message that we found on the old shipwreck of the Kaijitsu Blossom - the message saying that he and the other survivors were taking shelter in this cave. Tsutamu was the bodyguard of Rojiru Kaijitsu - Ameiko and Takeshi's grandfather. The letter in the pommel of the sword is addressed to Ameiko and Takeshi's father, Lonjiku. I imagine that the letter and whatever is stored in that chest Tsutamu was sitting on are what kept his restless spirit here after his death." "As for what's in the letter - it's Kaijitsu business. Ameiko and Takeshi should have a chance to read it for themselves first and then decide if they wish to share the information with anyone else," Liu Na says firmly, replacing the letter within the secret compartment in the pommel of the sword and handing it to Takeshi.
Liu Na reappears and reaches down to pick up Tsutamu's sheathed sword and whispers something in the language spoken by the skeleton. Tian:
"You were wrong about one thing, Honorable Tsutamu. Those who strike from the shadows in defense of their lord know the honor of defending their liege from the hidden threats that go unperceived by the samurai. The duty may not be as obvious, but the honor is just as great." Liu Na walks over to Takeshi and bows her head as she offers the skeleton's weapon to him. "This was the blade of Tsutamu, bodyguard of Rojiru Kaijitsu. Whatever duty kept him here beyond his natural lifespan, he fulfilled it with honor. This blade belongs with the Kaijitsu family now."
Jorland The Shuhite wrote: "What's going on Liu? Talk te me, I cant understand ye speak yet ye know." Free Action: "This is Tsutamu - the one who left the message on the wall of the wrecked Kaijitsu Blossom. Says he was Rojiru Kaijitsu's bodyguard. He thinks we're thieves," Invisible-Liu Na replies to Jorland's question.
Round Two: Liu Na sighs in resignation at the lack of response her statement receives from skeletal-Tsutamu. The half-elf suddenly reappears as she attacks the skeletal former bodyguard again with her hanbo, and then disappears again. Standard action to attack Tsutamu with hanbo. Note: Tsutamu loses his Dexterity bonus to AC (if any) since Liu Na is striking from invisibility. Swift action to expend 1 ki point and use Vanishing Trick to become invisible for 2 rounds. Hanbo Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 14
Ki Points used today: 3/3
Round One: Invisible-Liu Na silently strides up behind the skeleton that slashed Kalistrine. The half-elf ninja suddenly appears as she attacks the skeleton with her hanbo, and then disappears into the shadows again. Move action to flank Tsutamu-skeleton with Kalistrine. Standard action to attack Tsutamu-skeleton. Swift action to expend 1 ki point and use Vanishing Trick to become invisible for 2 rounds. Hanbo Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 23 (flanking, bless)
Ki Point used today: 2/3
"I agree with Kali. We need to take them by surprise," Liu Na says grimly. Putting word to action, the half-elf ninja sprints forward to swipe her hanbo at the skeleton seated on the chest, and then suddenly disappears! Move action to move 25 ft to point adjacent to skeleton seated on chest. Standard action to attack (flat-footed?) skeleton with hanbo. Swift action to expend 1 ki point and use Vanishing Trick to become invisible for 2 rounds. Hanbo Attack vs. Flat-footed Skeleton: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
Liu Na is now adjacent to the seated skeleton and invisible. Ki Points used today: 1/3
