Assuming it is some kind of magical device, Lescol will make an Arcana skill check to ID it.

Apologies, been out of the country the last week.

We should go quickly before the city is locked up even tighter. I have no idea of how to hide the fact that we have magic users. I say let those Inquisitors come and they can taste my blade or kill me. It matters little.

I think it was two v one for Torrent staying so she'll speak up.

Torrent nods at Lescol "I agree, let us make a copy so we don't have to fight the Shahalesti now nor will they impede us leaving. I think they will have just as much trouble deciphering this as us so I doubt it will be much use to them straight away. We will likely have to scout atop the walls first to see what parts don't have armies, we don't want to get caught by any army at the minute do we? Even if they don't capture us they might try to kill us regardless of allegiance." Torrent says with a little concern in her voice.

"I can scout the walls while the pages are copied if you want."

Lescol walks over to Shaelis, "We have both played fair with each other. Now I have a request. If we are going to use this information to fight the Empire we have to get out of the city. Do you know of any secret ways out of the city? It benefits both of us to facilitate our mission."

With the Lescol and Nilus peering over the box, they spend a bit of time looking at the lock before Nilus points out some of the things Lescol missed. Lescol then uses a sharp bit of metal to slowly dislodge the tumblers before the box opens with a satisfying click.

The box is a tad heavy, it might really be made out of adamantium as Rivereye had suspected. Inside the group finds a book, it is written in Infernal. As the group leafs through it they see copious maps and architectural drawings for some sort of underground complex.

** spoiler omitted **

The book is no doubt valuable but how much the group can not say. It does not look like anything in Gate pass, at least not the drawings. They are unsure about the text. However given a few hours they can copy the book word for word with all the diagrams. So they won't have to fight for it away from the Shahalesti, if they so choose.

Oh also, with the discovery of the book it tips the group's XP over. Welcome to level 3! If you need help leveling up, feel free to ask.

Lescol votes to let the elves make a copy of the book as long as it is okay with Torrent.

In a low voice Lescol asks his group "It's time we get out of the city, right? We have the scroll of disguise that we could use to get through the gate or we have the potion of climbing to help get us over the wall. In fact as long as the wall isn't too tall, I have the ability to jump on top of it. I could lower a rope down so that the rest of you could climb up. Then we switch the rope you climb down the other side, I jump down and off we go. Thoughts?"

Ooh...I love to level up. I added 1 new racial ability and 4 basic abilities which are all shown on the character sheet, I added 5 to vitality. Added 1 to attack bonus, Fortitude, Reflex and Will (Level 3/2 = 1.5 rounded up to 2 vs Level 2/2 is 1). One of my abilities added 5 to Stealth and Perception which has been noted on character sheet.

Ok...so if I press this here and turn these tumblers like this...

Guys, please roll to assist this task, use your dexterity and your mechanical skill modifiers
Mechanical skill +2, Dexterity +2
Mechanical Skill (Open Lock): 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 + 2 = 12

I looked at the character skills and our birdbrain friend that's been absent has a better chance than the rest of us to open a lock.

Assuming that doesn't work, Lescol will give the box to Nilus, point out the weak spot and ask him to pry it open with his dagger.

She ponders for a moment. "That halfling we took it from said something about a password, do you know it?"

She looks at the party who are no doubt sceptical "Yes I'd be leading you to a group of people that are on my side in a hideout, I have told you this now. I won't have that as a surprise I can understand your paranoia. You have my word that the men there won't attack you. So long as you don't attack me or them that is."

Looking at the group and seeing no objection, Lescol replies "Take us the case. We can open it. However, we need to make sure that you can't use the contents against our city before we could share anything with you. And if you try to betray us my pugilistic friend here will slice your throat before you could complete a spell. It's not a threat, just a statement of fact. I've seen him do it before."

The Elf takes Nilus's reproach as a yes and quickly gets up guiding the group up the stairs with his hands in the air. It looks like the Elf does have some other tricks on his belt but he is too worried to try any of them out.

Once the group gets to the fourth floor, like all the floors in this tower are filled with lockers. However they see a set of tied up guards and Rivereye, all of which are unconscious. Far off in the distance poorly hidden behind one of the locker sets is a dead half orc with half his face melted off. The half-orc isn't in a uniform so you doubt he is one of the guards.

I assume the group will at least wake up Rivereye, up to you want you want to do with the rest of them.

As Rivereye's eyes flutter opened and he groans away the grogginess he shouts out. "Oh thank the gods, someone to get me out of here. Damn, you guys are the greatest. How did you.. oh no matter how you found me, I'm glad you did! Haha, got to tell you how I outwitted the bastard that tied me up." He then notices the elf who is nearby "Oh still here? You aught to jump from this tower head first, I'm sure the ground would love to be acquainted with your face!" Rivereye scoffs at the elf.

"Okay elf, you told the truth about Rivereye being alive so that is a point in your favor. Where can we find this superior of yours and does he have the case?"

The group can hear distant muted thumps fill the air, like the sound of ripe fruit landing on the roof of a house. Torrent begins to get worried, looking at the roof suspiciously then whispers rather loudly: "The Ragesians... they can't be attacking now?!"

"Of course they can be. At least we can take a few of them down with us before we all die horrible, gruesome, excruciating deaths. Don't say I didn't tell you so." Despite his words, you can see Lescol's demeanor actually improve as he looks forward to the combat.

"I feel that we are betrayed...just as I expected."

Lescol readies his shield and draws his longsword. "Get ready to run!"

Lescol will attempt to move quietly to a spot near the stairs but still out of sight of anyone coming down the stairs. His goal will be to suprise anyone coming down the stairs. Stealth Check +4: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 Yikes :-(

The bird-man cocks his head at the ugly man with the longsword and grins, insofar as a tengu can grin with a beak. Although loath to judge a book by its cover, Kaive reckons that Lescol's life must have been pretty appalling, to leave the man so hideously disfigured. Or perhaps he was just born ugly. C'est la vie.

"Perhaps someone that looks to have lost as many fights as you have should avoid picking any more."

"Well met Kaive Featherbrain and your unnamed friend. Well met indeed if you can help us get our cargo" Lescol nods his head towards Torrent, "out of town. Do either of you have useful contact that could help get us out."

Lescol gives Kaive a unfriendly smile revealing a mouth full of broken, yellowed teeth. "As for losing fights, I'm still alive while everyone that I have ever cared about is dead. I don't know then if winning is really losing. Don't fret too much about it though as I doubt any of us will be alive tomorrow."

Lescol jumps to his feet when the scarred man enters the room smoothly drawing his long sword (which seems to glow faintly as if lit from within). He eyes the large man warily.

"Who are you and what is your business here?"
