Happy New Year everyone. Im giving up play by post. I wish you the best of luck and have fun!

"Whoever is scouting ahead should take the goggles... Assuming we get out of here, we can divide up the credits. Are we ready to get moving?" Xim motions to the door back the way the group came.

Lazarus searches the last room... he doesn't bother to turn on lights, depending on his low-light and darkvision.
Perception(search): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23

Lazarus Xim nods to his frosty friend in agreement and moves down the hall to the doors, weapons at the ready.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

Xim grabs the crowbar and starts working on widening the opening in the door.

After a few moments of looking for hidden attackers Xim gives up and says,"Maybe he just wants us to kill the escaped creature so he can have his lab back. Qua'Ree cannot be trusted; but I don't think we have much choice." He puts his sword away and heads for the door to the lab, resigned to his fate.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

I would like to try more strain & injury system. Really it's a healing system, not a wound system.

Akward. :) Could be you are immune but also a carrier. Congratulations, you get to live... turning everyone you meet into undead. ;) Very popular at parties. If that's the case, it's delightfully cruel.

Xim freezes at the sound of his creator's voice. "Why? Why are you doing this to us?"he gibbers. Lazarus starts turning in circles irrationally, in case something is coming from behind them, or from the ducts... or from behind the desk. "WHY!?!?!"

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

"Perhaps Kunga, good to take I'm sure." Lazarus takes a mask, batteries and one roll of ion tape and a zip stick for his utility belt. "I'm just afraid that we are already infected. I shall see if the Doctor needs any help identifying the gas. "

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

When he finally gets a chance, Xim translates the document as well as he can. As he translates he muses aloud, "Humn. My guess is that the author of this chronicle is the cyborg mechanic we just dispatched... This text lays out that they got locked in this facility when something got out of the science labs. It says.. bio-mechanical creature, interesting, because as far as I know, we were in the science labs, and we saw nothing. Perhaps it was a different lab.

Then when they tried to escape up the shaft in the Power junction, that door that we are thinking of opening. Good news is that it leads to the docking bay for sure. Bad news is that when they opened it, a gas was released that killed first the woman, then transformed the mechanic into something risen. Based on that, she may have been transformed too.

If my guess is correct it transformed him into that creature... and it may be doing the same to us even now. Doctor Thaalosso, do you think you could use the chemalyzer in that medkit to identify what that gas is?" He puts the tablet down, "And it may also mean that even if this station is abandoned, there is at least one or two more creatures in here with us."

Before moving on, Lazarus takes a comset. He gathers up all the tools in one place and tries to find a bag to put it all in. Maybe in one of the personal lockers.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

Looking through the open door Xim says, "Fraejia, You probably want the grippers, Yes? If not, be a dear and grab them anyway. Tools are probably our best asset in an escape attempt... speaking of, how does the powercell of the repair droid look? does that have power to jump the card reader?"

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

"Before we gradually disarm ourselves, let's check out that open door. We are in a maintenence bay. We should be able to find some power somewhere.." Xim strides to the partially open door and peers in. Gun and sword at the ready.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

"Skill chip eh? One can never have to many skills." Xim pulls of the cowling and attempts to remove the skill chip from the drone. If no one else takes the loot from the mechanic, Xim will.

Use Tech device to remove chip: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

Round 4 (People may want to hold action to take their turn after mine.)

Xim stays focused on the robot, and shifts so that someone else can take the flank with Fraejia. He is ready to react if he is attacked and takes tactical command, saying "Terz and Kunga, Fraejia gave us a chance. If we are all on opposite sides it can't target us all at once... We are going to have to work together to take this thing down. Everyone, aim for the joints! Joints are harder to repair. death of a thousand cuts...Together WE CAN DO IT!!"

That is his standard action to begin his "Inspire courage" +1 to attack and damage, looks like we need every point we can get. He will parry and riposte if attacked by a melee attack, and gunslinger's dodge if he is attacked by a ranged attack.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

Round 3

Lazarus will slip in next to his frosty friend, and stab the repair droid.

Rapier STAB!!: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17 / damage: 2d6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 5) + 1 = 9

Lazarus sets up to 'parry and riposte' the next attack at him.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

Round 2
Lazarus continues to concentrate... hoping that this creature before us is the only darkness he can sense, and afraid that there is more.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

:P Yes, I typed the wrong word. My bad. I should be sickened like everyone else.

The undead don't tend to travel alone, Lazarus thinks to himself. Xim stretches out his senses, trying to connect with the darkness deep within. When he does this, he feels unlife around him. Is the risen-mechanic the only unlife around? Xim casts detect undead.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

Lazarus keeps his eyes on on the hall behind them as he is overcome by the stench. Turning to look at the group quickly he asks, "What is that smell?"

Xim moves forward to the 75% cover he can reach that is closest to the turret, and takes another shot at the functioning turret.

(if Chaali is in melee and blocking the shot, Xim won't take the shot and he will double move to cover closer to the turret end of the hall, scanning for new adversaries.)
Autopistol: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7 / Damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (4, 3) + 4 = 11 (Just in case he has the clear shot)

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

@warhawk, I think we are OK to use non OGL words, particularly an actual word with an actual meaning. We are only on shaky ground of we try to sell it as a game.

Even though use tech device is a skill for me. We could have several skills with the same effect that represent different approaches to the problem.

The pale Terran takes his gun in one hand, and sword in the other, and falls in behind Rocknell in a practiced boarding formation. He forces a smile and says to everyone, "My name is Xim, if we have half a chance of getting The Butcher, I'm taking it... I suppose I am willing to settle for just getting the frell out of here."

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

I must admit I assumed the will be rare because only a few classes get it as default weapon proficiency. Other classes need a feat for E-weapons. Fighters, Gunslingers, Cyborgs IIRC get eweapon prof automatically.

If people without the E-weapon proficiency feat are using them, they are at -2 to hit at least.

So it would follow that professional soldiers may have them.

It also explains why stormtroopers die with one blaster shot... why do they even wear armor?

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

DR/armor protects from Knives and bullets?
Those are supposed to be more common than energy weapons as I understand the setting. They are what I use. We are a party of heroes, so we have better than average weapons.

The way I am understanding the rules:
If you get hit by a laser that does 2d8(fire) damage... your basic armor offers no protection, and your vulnerability still applies. That's why E weapons are so good.
If you have armor with a resist 5 fire, that would reduce the incoming damage by 5 and then apply your vulnerability.

Conversely, when you ice-blast Boba Fett, his armor offers no protection from your blast. Even though my bullets are bouncing off him.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

I think it makes sense to minimize complications, so I will vote for Energy always bypasses Dr. That's what resistances are for... it will put a premium on even small energy resistances.

When it interacts with the Strain/Wound system, as I understand it there is a difference because attacks that force a saving throw cause wounds and attacks against defense as a rule don't. So you can "dodge" a laser and take the "hit" as strain damage. But a monster breath weapon that forces a reflex save is Wound damage whether you make the save or fail it.

The way we have set this up, Guns and Lasers are deadly. As players we need to look for cover rather than stand an slam. When I played SW Saga edition, making sure the combat maps had lots of opportunities for cover did wonders to make encounters survivable.

One other variant to consider (I am not advocating, I am brainstorming here):
DR/armor only protects from wound damage. Not strain damage. That way the first couple hits will get through and eat up your strain HP cushion, but when the going gets really tough you have extra protection. Complicates the gameplay, and I don't like to do that; but I like it as a thought experiment.

Another possible faction from Kunga's backstory: Android / Robot pirates. They could be part of a union of AI's that believe in Technological Supremacy, like the Cylons. Freeing computers / Androids from the domination of the organics. They seem like commerce raiders, because to us they are stealing stuff; but they see themselves as freedom fighters. They aren't pirates, they are rescuing the AI navigation program that is in your starship from slavery.

The real b5 Season 5 problem is that they were canceled as far as they knew in the middle of season 4, (I think their distribution company was folding or something) so they tied the whole thing up at the end of season 4. Then TNT picked the show up because Ted liked the show... and suddenly they had to fill the final season. My favorite episode of the whole show is in season 5... Day of the Dead.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

I think the interest check thread started as straight space opera as one option, and fantasy western as the other... then they sort of merged for a while, space opera western... and then split into Warhawk deciding to run 2 games rather than one or the other when there was so much interest in the interest check thread.

Agreed. I am good with classic space opera. Heck, I am more classic space pirate than space cowboy. Part of the fun of space opera is that you can just push a little bit, or go to a new planet or sector and change the feel of the game for an adventure... and when you are bored of that, go somewhere else.

I loved B5 and DS9 is my favorite star-trek. I really think B5 being on at the same time and being so similar pushed DS9 to be better than it would otherwise have been.
To be fair... the first season of B5 is basically unwatchable.

Male Human (Dhampir) HP 20 Strain:0 Wounds:0 | Panache 4 | Def: 14 FF:10 | F:1 R:8 W:2 | CMD:16 | Init:4 | Per:7

I love all of those. I don't think we really need to be shoehorned into just one. Here are my preferences in order with comments about each:

1. Firefly:
This is the feel I was expecting with the space cowboy theme. Also my favorite of all time. I was assuming we were independent operators on the edge of civilization. It was a good mix of simple morality and complicated morality.

2. Babylon 5:
Loved the show, not sure what this has that makes it stand out as a feel... the meddling with ancient powers aspect I suppose. Another good mix of simple and complicated morality.

3. Battlestar Galactica:
I actually like the show more than B5, but it was too darn depressing. So I love the feel of it, but wouldn't want such constant "grittyness". Really like that EVERYONE on the show had a dark side. EVERYONE made bad decisions now and again, and even Baltar was not a simple mustache twirling villain.

4. Farscape:
Working my way through this right now on Neflix. It is darker than I remember. What I like about Farscape is that they went for that techno-organic thing. It feels far less mechanical. That's interesting.

5. Starwars:
Loved the movie as a kid. Too black and white, not enough moral ambiguity for my taste. Often feels like classic fantasy dressed up in lasers.

I paid for a masterwork autopistol according to the normal Pathfinder rules. It isn't a family heirloom just a really nice gun with a +1 to hit.

Clearly my Family Masterwork Rapier fits the your description of my masterwork item above. (also mechanically a Masterwork weapon)

I just want to make sure that is an option.

Reading your background, it makes lots of sense that we could be travelling together.

Xim is also detached and formal, with pale skin for a human and able to see in total darkness. I could imagine the two of them going whole days without either of us noticing and turning on the lights.
You would know that when no other humans are around, Xim stops showing much emotion and falls into a vacant feral expression.

Party Roles:
I do close and ranged light fighting / party face and support when needed.

Generally I prefer if we know and have a reason to trust each other before the game begins. Anyone interested in having some shared history with me?

To throw some ideas out there:

  • I have been a drifter for at least a few standard months, and have resume that means we could have crewed the same starship.
  • We could have known people from my time in the Imperial Navy (7 years ago).
  • We may have escaped "The Institution" together.

I'm down to my last 5 credits and looking for work.

Ok, Think I am done now.

Backstory:

A tall slender man stands at the front counter of a pawn shop. He is looking at a sword and after a time he asks if he can examine it more closely. Bending over he examines the sword as if it was a long lost treasure, or a child. As he examines it, he makes idle conversation with the pawnbroker. This is what he tells the broker:

"No, Lieutenant, that won't be necessary, commence landing procedures as planned." It was not the sentence I expected to end my career, render it short and ignominious, and leave me in the brig for 7 years. That sentence was the first pebble in the avalanche that destroyed my life, and left me here on the fringe looking for work, estranged from all humanity.

To begin with, I should probably tell you where I come from. Glisten is a world, not in the strict planetary sense of the world, but it's a political body of people that live in the Glisten system, as part of the Derutei Imperium. Glisten is ruled by a Duke, and administered by the Moot. A council of 39 royal families that were given the system 5 centuries ago. Physically, Glisten is a system of some small rock worlds, 3 gas giants and an asteroid belt.

For more than 5 centuries, the Glisten System has been a Jewel in the crown of the rule of man. The Grapthar family, what I used to call my family, has ruled from 230º - 240º of the asteroid belt for more than 1500 years, and has military tradition stretching back to the Terran Alliance. Now my Uncle Atherton rules the system as the Imperial Governor, allowing megacorporations to rape and pillage the wealth of the system. I’m getting ahead of myself, that all happened while I was in the brig.

Since we have no inhabited planets, the people of glisten live their whole life on spaceships and stations. Because of that, the nobles of Glisten have a long, proud tradition of serving as the officers the Glisten System Navy. Like all the systems in the Imperium, Glisten Navy officers are expected to train with the Imperial Navy. When my turn came, I did my duty, and was assigned as one of the hundreds of Lieutenants aboard the DISS Devastator. I don’t know if it was the luck of the draw, or if it was considered a comendation assignment, but I was assigned as shuttle commander to deliver Admiral Tarkasis to accept the surrender of the planet Vland. As we approached the landing pad, it became clear that protesters had swarmed the landing pad, making a safe landing impossible. As shuttle commander, it was my duty to inform the Admiral of the situation, and ask permission to revise the flight plan and land at a secondary landing sight. I didn’t believe what I was hearing even as Tarkasis said it, "No, Lieutenant, that won't be necessary, commence landing procedures as planned." I protested, and he cut me off, relieved me of duty and had me arrested on the spot.

I don’t really know what the dates are for what happened in the next 7 years. I was in the brig, and at some point I was transferred to the institution and experimented on. I don’t remember much of anything about that time. Pain inside of me so tremendous that I blocked it out. Lights, colors, sensations, maybe feelings, that’s all that remains of the me that was. Sometime while I was in there, Governor Atherton executed the coup that overthrew the Glisten Government. For all I know he had me sent to the institution as part of that plot.

At some point I came back to myself in the institution. I’m not the same as I was. My senses are sharper, I’m faster, the bright light hurts my eyes. From what I could piece together, just snippets of overheard conversation as I pretended to be asleep. They were using me as a test subject to figure out what happened on Terra… trying to understand the curse of undeath… somehow, they gave it to me. I heard a name, Doctor Qua’Rhee, sometimes they said Qua’Rhee the Butcher. Qua’Rhee gave me whatever it is that brings the dead back. As I came to my senses, I could feel the other undead in the neighboring rooms. At some point they moved me for some treatment or another, I don’t know what it was, but I saw my opportunity and struck. The orderlies had been expecting a nearly unconscious patient, my combat reflexes came back to me as I struck. I don’t know if I killed them. But I took their uniforms and IDs and made my way out of the institution in a supply shuttle. I had to kill 7 more guards on my way out. From there, it was easy to find passage to Glisten. En route I learned about what my uncle had done.

When I got to the Glisten station, the primary center of life in the system. I was able to contact old friends of the family. They wanted nothing to do with me… between my name and my pathetic career as a naval officer, knowing me was death sentence. But I found out who had killed my family, the Jormungand… Oh, I see you know them. Well, I left the system on a hunt for them. One at a time… in the dark… alone… I found them; The officers of the Jormungand Company. Until one of them revealed who he sold my mother’s sword to. He said he sold it to a pawn shop here, on Unsho. Now, let us discuss the price of this sword; and as we do, please remember, I have nothing left to lose.

The problem with the Picaroon is that you loose some of the better swashbuckler deeds in trade for deeds that overcome Pathfinder limitations that are house-ruled out of this game.

Since basic swashbuckler comes with Swashbuckler finesse, which also lets me use Charisma for Int in combat feats. That's a much better deal, since it's only a feat to pick up 2 weapon fighting if I want it down the road.

25 pts. Yay! I guess I am not done.

Perfect, Thanks!

I used a 20 pt buy for stats. I hope that was correct.
For my Mundane future Rapier and StarKnife I used double damage die.
Please let me know if I need to change things.

Working on history by the end of the weekend.

@Warhawk - How much do modern bullets cost?
Standard pathfinder rules say: 1.5 Cr per shot. Seems pricey for the most common weapon type in the galaxy.

I think I am done once I have bought bullets

Hi Warhawk - Xim is about 70% there.

Still need to do:

* buy equipment
* choose/refluff spells
* Choose skills: Open to advice on this one. Are there skills that are important for shipboard roles other than Pilot? Are we following the SW: Saga rules where skills just apply to ships to? Like using Stealth for hiding the ship?
Planning to be able to: Diplomacy, Bluff, Hide, 1 point in Pilot, 1 point in Use Tech, Perform Oratory

Some questions:
Guns - Do chemical pistols have a misfire chance like normal PF?

Are energy pistols Martial Weapons? I would swear that I saw a house-rule feat for e-weapon proficiency, but I couldn't find it as I went to bed last night. I am having a little trouble figuring out which guns fall inside the "Martial" weapons catagory and which are outside.
