With Riverbane and her loyalists dead, you are free to return to the Scrag Fisher. The two pirates still on board plead ignorance of their captain’s conspiracy and readily offer to bring you Pathfinders back to Deadbridge.

Lauranna treats the party and crew to the other rousing pirate shanty she knows.

Following an uneventful return trip, you meet again with the Black Marquis. The man listens to your tale with great interest. He thank profusely.

"From what I have pieced together, it would seem that Lady Riverbane has been plotting to dethrone me for some time," declares the Black Marquis. "Despite my own mastery of the art of deception, I failed to to realize the part my once trusted second-in-command, Lady Riverbane, played in my recent dealings with your Society."

"Well-"

"The woman plotted to dethrone me and spent the past months undermining my hold on the Pirate Pact. I suppose, if I am to be honest, I had only a handful of close friends and bodyguards that I could truly rely upon. Only a small number that Riverbane could not coerce, seduce, or bribe."

"Yeah, bu-"

"Thus, Riverbane came up with a plan to get these last followers killed. About a month ago, she approached me with tales of how she stole an ancient manuscript entitled Memoirs of the Silver Brotherhood from Istivil Bosk, Daggermark’s resident Pathfinder Venture-Captain. She claimed the book held clear directions to a long-lost vault in the nearby Echo Wood—a vault full of great riches waiting to be plundered."[/b]

"Youdon'thaveto-

"With so much gold involved, my reaction was regretfully one that Lady Riverbane was able to predict. Wary of my more insubordinate followers, I called upon those trusted few men to accompany Lady Riverbane on the treasure hunt."

"Uh-huh."

"It is now clear, in fact, that Riverbane never stole any book. She instead forged a copy of the famed memoirs, fabricating the passage about the crypt and its alluring prize. Her counterfeit didn’t point to any gold but marked the location of something much more sinister: an unholy shrine to Mazmezz, demon lord of vermin. It was there that the villainous woman led my best men and, as you discovered, left them to die at the hand of ettercaps and arachnid monstrosities that she knew lived there."[/b]

"Right...." Laranna looks at her wrist sundial.

"Upon her return, Riverbane presented me with a story of how a pack of giant spiders ambushed the expedition, slaying everyone but herself. Of course, I dispatched scouts to locate survivors, but all they brought back were accounts of Pirate Pact members found dead, dangling in spider webs stretched across the River."[/b]

"Yeah-that's great, but you see, we've got this thing-"

"With rumors spreading and many brigands now overtly challenging my leadership," the Black Marquis notes, "I realized that I must act quickly. It was then that I turned to the Pathfinder Society or help. Convinced by Riverbane that her false book was genuine, I sent a letter to Istivil Bosk offering a deal: the memoirs in exchange for assistance."

"So wait, you knew all along and didn't tell us?" Lauranna says, suddenly angry.

"You may keep what you have looted during your expedition, but I must refuse to offer you Pathfinders any further reward." The Black Marquis shrugs.

“Such is the way of the River Kingdoms,” he declares. “If nothing else, your involvement in this affair helped free the region of a dangerous ettercap menace. Hopefully, that’s worth a quick mention in a Pathfinder Chronicle. No?”

Her face reddening, Lauranna lunges at the man. "YOU'RE GONNA BE THE BLACK AND BLUE MARQUIS WHEN I'M THROUGH WITH YOU, YOU JERK!!"

Racing past Driskarr before he can get his shot off, Lauranna charges the pirates clutching her huge war mace overhead in both hands! "ARR! MATIES!"

Jaakko reloads his firearm within seconds and shouts to remaining pirates a warning, though they may not understand what he's saying.

"If there's a wizard out there who is scrying this right now, could you invent a subtitling spell, please?" says Lauranna to the 'audience at home' whatever that means.

Lauranna looks on as the elf tries to savage the pirates with her talons and fangs.

"Wow! I wish I had some exploded corn and butter." she says excitedly.

"She claimed t'have found the location of the crypt in some book. Claimed it lied nearby, here in the Echo Wood-"

"Where?"

"-and that it held a vault full of great riches waiting to be plundered. Of course, when the Black Marquis heard her tale, he resolved t'find the vault," One-Eyed Farl continues. "Convinced, the Black Marquis set out assemblin' a group of men, but was unwillin' to rely on insubordinate pirate troops. Thus, he chose only the rare few men he could trust--such as yours truly--and those poor souls." The pirate points to a collection of desiccated still hanging in the webs.

"But, it was no crypt t'where she led us! Twas this wretched place--an unholy shrine to Mazmezz, demon lord of vermin--where we was led. Here, the villainous woman left us to die at the hand of ettercaps and arachnid monstrosities she knew lived here!"

"That woman plots to dethrone the Black Marquis and to undermine Bazzak’s hold on the Pirate Pact," he hisses.

"But now that I've experienced the Lady Riverbane's treachery first hand--seen it with me one-good eye--I must be warnin' the Black Marquis!"

"So what's wrong with the other one?"

Lauranna quickly checks both men over for for any further wounds or other ills.

"Um, no." Lauranna says, now a bit confused by the words, and the man's tone. She looks up and says "Don't you remember? We clobbered them all."

"PREPARE SOME HEALING! QUICK!"

"WHAT!? Well why didn't you say so. "Really why do you gotta make it sound so mysterious and say stuff like 'Get ready to attend them.' Geez."

Before they reach the ground because Chaldira knows Zs will probably drop them, Lauranna produces a wave of good vibes a couple of times with everyone in range.

Hearing this, Lauranna spits in her hands and gets a firm grip on her maul ready to deliver the coup de grace on whatever Zzorn sends down.

Lauranna goes to take a running start at the giant spider, but is forced to dive for cover at the last moment.

Jaakko shoots the spider.

"The spider. Shoot the spider." she admonishes Jaako before moving to attack.

Lauranna inspires everyone with the story of how she was waiting in this endless line into an old cobwebby cave where she couldn't see what was going on because of the people in front of her not moving.

If it seems needed to see, Lauranna casts light upon her smiling mallet before entering.

"Eww. Creepy." says Lauranna moving forward with her maul in hand. "What do you think killed him?"

She intones a prayer of protection from evil followed by a prayer for guidance and looks about.

"Don't just sit there, Zzorn. C'mon!"

Before leaving the Hanspur's Luck, Zzorn harvests some of the poison from the giant spiders using his newly purchased kit.

Lauranna gets sick nearby.

Lauranna uses her skills to provide any healing up until she figures that a night's rest will take care of any lingering effects, pointing out again how the party spoiled a perfectly good spontaneous 2nd-level spell she had cast.

The next day
She sticks with the same group of prayers/spells from the previous day.

"Whew! That was close one." says Lauranna from the top edge of the pit. "I might have fallen in."

She turns back around to address those in the pit. "Are you guys okay?"

Lauranna kicks around the hold looking for anything interesting but definately not extracting venom from dead, giant, venomous spiders because that's disgusting and who would even think to do that?

Koani examines papers and the logbook.

Her eyebrows go up when she reads the logbook, considering how that seems to contradict what the team was told earlier. She silently shows her companions her findings.

"What!?" says Lauranna loudly as Koani points at text that is up-side-down from Lauranna's point of view.

Lauranna squashes a third spider...

green swatting the dangling creature so hard that it hit the upper decking, and stuck there.

Like a little girl with a huge morningstar she skips starboard through the cobwebs coming out the other side looking like a dusty ghost.

**koff, koff** "Yuck. Someone get the cleric to see to Sirius' wounds... Wait. 'Sirius' wounds'? Sirius's wounds? THE PALE GUY'S WOUNDS!" she yells and she's off to face another spider.

If you are thinking about the green spider it's on the ceiling and not directly between Zzorn and Lauranna and therefore we aren't flanking it. At least I know I haven't been adding the bonus in. Heck, I didn't even add bull's strength in last round. ;)

Anyhow she might be out of your way in a moment, although she certainly discourages the slyph from fighting until she has s moment to take a look at him. He looks so pale.

Dang it! Forgot the bull's strength last time around (+2 more to hit, +3 more to damage). Sanctuary ends when she made her attack last round.

"Seriously!? I almost knocked you to Sirius, Sirius." says Lauranna hammering wildly with her mallet. Looking at the sylph's wounds she adds "Those look serious, Sirius. Get behind me and stay low. Lower than that. Maybe a little further back too."

"You know, maybe go hide in that room over there." she adds pointing toward the door in the bow before resuming the fight.

Lauranna swings and the earth breaker changes the air pressure of the ship's hold. She can't watch and closes her eyes at the last moment.

Don't forget the save for trying to walk through the web, and then there's all the attacks of opportunity from the spiders, and the rent coming due, and the chariot repair bill, the high humidity, and....

Lauranna forces her way through the webbing.

"Right! Some swingin' room at last!" She pulls her huge maul back and swings at the gruesome, eight-legged piñata hanging from the hold's ceiling.

CMB v webs (DC 12; bull's strength): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Because the webs are difficult terrain (like the stairs down) that puts her back 5 feet from where her dotted pink trail finished.

"Eww. What is this?" groans Lauranna passing by the huge monstrous spiders and into the thick webbing somehow without being noticed.

"WHERE AM I SUPPOSED TO STAND! I swear some people and their lousy encounter design. %$#&**...."

Lauranna prays for space or sanctuary as it turns out.

"Excuse me! Excuse me! I'm trying to get through here. Geez." says Lauranna moving through the cramped space, trying to find somewhere she can get some swinging room.

Not sure if the webs are decoration or obstructions, but Lauranna will find out soon enough I expect. ;)

The captain turns around and says, “Here we are mates. That looks like a good place to start your investigation, wouldn’t you say?”

"Well no actually. Most of the time they start in an indistinct office or meeting room with a Venture-Captain and a bunch of strangers. But when out on the ocean do as the Oceanians, I guess."

Lauranna casts a simple light spell upon her huge smiley faced maul.

After battle Jaakko has a very brief moment of confusion and he addresses rest of the party. "I apologize to all of you not informing about my condition. For several months now, I have been unable to understand or speak anything else than Infernal in combat situations. In my opinion this is likely Cayden's blessing, or should I say 'curse'. But we should probably agree on strategy before going to fight so we don't interrupt our spellcasters."

"Oh wow! I wish I could speak in tongues. Chaldira just gave me his big mace that I kinda swing in combat situations."

She stops and ponders a strategy "I had a Society friend in the Murder Hobo faction who once told me the I should just 'go in and kill 'em 'til they're dead.' That always seems to work."

She casts bull's strength on herself.

Lauranna let's people worry about their hp still angry about the fight, but by the end of the day she uses her channels heal folks up to full(ish).

"Speak for yourself." grumbles the cleric. "Who do you think has to heal up all this damage? Hit points don't grow on trees you know." (¬_¬)

That and we removed their boards! ;)

Although it is true that we could just keep our heads down (boats have gunnels; prone + cover = +8 AC!) and let them waste their arrows until the we outrun them.

But there's also the potential of treasure, information, bottles of wine, Murder Hobo faction awards, etc....

Lauranna stomps amid the raining arrows, her back turned to the battle berating the crew. "And another thing! I won the initiative. I got to go first! Do you know how rare that is for clerics!? Do you!? It's our dump stat! Speed and clerics go together like Blarg and exfoliation! These guys are all low end fighters or rogues! They don't have any will power resist magic with! Pardon my Kellish, but Nine Hells! They barely have a boat!"

She slings her huge bludgeon on her shoulder and moves up to the boat's wheel to survey the battlefield.

@Lauranna: apologies for overlooking your buff; usually the GM puts them in the initiative tracker to make them 'official' so I wasn't sure they were active or not yet...

No worries. This is not an unexpected issue in Mathfinder, for supporting characters and it plays into the Lauranna's role as a comedic, 4th wall-breaker. ;)

Oy vey! It's not a prestige class. In the Core Rules they're called 'bards'.

Koani then looses another arrow.

Lauranna just can't seem to stop shaking her head in disappointment. Buffs she thinks, the holiday fruit cake of abilities.

She swings her huge metal club around, but her heart obviously isn't into it as she smashesh the ship's gunnel.

In battle Zzorn always has his falchion and buckler readied as per stats; sorry if I wasn't clear on this

Zzorn tries to slash at the archer with the purple scarf as it moves past him.

"So you see a problem and what's your first response? Hit it. Except you can't because they all look like you're drunk when you try." Lauranna says continuing to berate the others to new heights of antagonism.

Annoyed that her allies have spoiled what looked to be a fun boarding party, she begins guilt-tripping them trying to ferret out what if any thought process they may have been using when they interupted her second-level spell. This of course infuriates them causing them to fight all the harder.

A boat! Rope! Grappling hooks?

Back now from an ongoing two-week long work week that started a week ago Monday, and might end this coming Friday (or Saturday).

Lauranna has observed that at least one member of her audience has been attacked and/or subjected to some other overtly hostile act.

"I KNOW!" Lauranna shoots some serious negative energy damage side-eye at each of her companions. ಠ_ಠ

Well obviously I should just stand over here, and wait until they are done then.

Still at work. I'll figure something out after when I can get to a computer. Until then talk amongst yourselves, I'll provide a topic. Peanuts. They are not nuts and actually are closer to peas. Discuss.

If you move on just assume she readies to bash someone through the deck with her earthbreaker if they get too close.
