Liberty's Edge

Thanks you guys for the suggestions so far, this will give me much to ponder. thanks again and please keep the ideas coming.

Liberty's Edge

Ok so I have been DMing a fast paced game, for a Neutral/Evil party. In this campaign so far they started off doing the dirty work of a local lord. After some initial success, they eventually failed the lord at a critical time and were imprisoned by their enemies. The party soon escapes the dungeon and begin fleeing the area to regroup. Fearing what the party knows and what they may have divulged, said lord hired a mercenary company to kill the PCs. Currently the PCs are trying to fight against the mercs while trying to find out who wants them dead.

The problem I am running into currently is that the party cleric want to change deities from Gorrum to Norgorber. Which in and of itself is fine, the player has even gone so far as to change his characters mannerisms, becoming very secretive, and no longer engages in fair fights preferring to ambush ememies. Where I am getting stuck is how to I weave a side quest in to this fast paced adventure without interrupting the pacing of the game, while still giving the cleric his due. As stated before, I want to give him a side adventure that could be wraped up in a seseor two that would explain his loss of power and his transition to Norgorber. I appreciate any help, thank you guys.

So the reason I had originally asked for suggestions as to how you handle the subject of returning characters to life is that, we havent had a need to explore that. Untill now characters who have died have been too low level to worry about and truth be told, I cant recall any higher level characters dying in my games. Maybe we have just been lucky, in that we have just never needed to use resurrection magic. As a result I thought it would be too dramatic of a change as was trying to limit its use. That being said, I have read all of the posts and discussed it with my players and I have cone to the conclusion that although it shouldnt be as simple as "pay gold to cleric, cleric casts spell". It should be made more available.

For this specific instance I am going to offer three potential methods of raising the character. The first would be through the cleric's church, and will be a standard Raise Dead spell which will require the diamond worth 5000gp as per the spell component, but will offer the restoration spells free of chrage. The second option will be through a witch the pc's must track down, this will result in a Reincarnation spell but the restoration cost will be on the pc's to find and pay for. Thirdly is through a necromancer who will preform the service free of cost but as a result of preforming some profane ritual the character is brought back as undead. For this I would apply the undead template, one permanent negative level that cant be restored and a permanent 10% spell check failure as a result of damage done to his divine conection for using evil arcane magic to pull his soul from his deity's afterlife.

Now my concern has turned from "To rez, or not to rez". How do I build a build an adventure arohnd each one other these diffrent methods. Number one seems easy enough, simple diamond heist should do the trick. But the other two, which are arguably cooler scenarios are proving a bit hard to plan an adventure for. Suggestions would be appreciated.

For anyone concerned about the player sitting out, we have a couple NPC that he could choose to run during this interruption in clerical service.

2 people marked this as a favorite.

I asked for advice on implementing a a part of the game that untill now I had not made use of. And in doing so, place limitations on that aspect of the game so that it doesn't cheapen the game. Is this clear enough? Now would you call those rules, or plot, or guidelines...Im just not sure.

I sure hope that helps clear up the thematic/mechanic/plot/rules dilemma or not. If my request was not understood because I misused one word or interpreted its meaning and scope differently than you, I apologize. Next time Ill ask the people at Giant in the Playground or WotC.

Thank you to those of you who were able to interpret my means and offered actual advice instead of being a RAW D-bag.

The player must be happy to jump through hoops in order to come back to life because gravity of a lucky shot from a mook

Ok and the alternative is to reverse time because it didnt happen at a critical plot point? Or should I treat it like a video game and restart at their last save so the BBEG can be the one to kill him? Im not going to deny the dice rolls because its inconvenient. Im allowing the player a chance to be resurrected because of the crazy circumstances of the characters death. In all honesty, he could just be dead with no chance at coming back. Im trying to give the players what they asked for and make it special. It wouldnt make sense in to go from having never used resurrection, just going to town and finding a cleric to cast raise dead.

Anything beyond 'Cleric casts spell,' is plot. Plot isn't a mechanic.

Ok what I ment, and which seemed easy to understand, what plot devices have others married to the mechanic in question so that it wasnt as boring as "cleric casts spell"

My question is basically: how do you handle resurrection/reincarnation in your games? Up to this point in my games I have never had to consider how to utilize this mechanic, but given the circumstances my players are clamoring for a chance to bring back their fallen comrade.

Ok in our last session we were wrapping up the last remnants of group of assassins. After killing most of the group and its leader the party turned its attention to mopping up a couple nameless henchmen who had wandered into the room mid fight. Our cleric was closest and moved to engage, which honestly seemed like a valid course of action (the clerics rolls were off the charts, he out melees our pally and rivals our fighter). So the cleric kills one and has almost finished off the other, so I roll the last attack for this henchman and like a dice possessed I rolled 20, 20, and a thrid 20. Which amounts to an insta-kill, the group was stunned. And so I resolved to give them a chance to bring him back. However i need help coming up with some rules for bring back the dead.

Liberty's Edge

DM ruled that I can keep original spell list.

Liberty's Edge

I went with aasimar (agathion) for the bonus to cha and con and for the flavor of it really. Yeah being able to keep original spell list is the only way dual cursed would even be viable with heavens mystery.

Liberty's Edge

Ok I have some updates. I think I am go with exactly what was suggested by Renegadeshepard. I have a ruling from the DM to keep heavens spell list depite taking dual cursed. Also I think I just rolled up a monster. (Scores in decending order) 18, 17, 16, 16, 15, 15. So thats awesome. Then a +2 con, +2 cha for racial. If I put the 17 in con it will bump up to 19 with bonuses, so at 4th lvl do I put point there to take it to 20 or go cha the whole time?

The only other thing I could ask of you mavelous people would be a lvl by lvl breakdown for feats and revelations, if somebody was so inclined. Thanks again fot helping me build a character Im excited to play.

Liberty's Edge

I think Im going to settle on heavens mystery. I know gnome is the best mechanics wise, but it osent really do it for me in the flavor department. I know its racist but I dont like small creatures. I was also wondering if I should take Dual Cursed or whatever thats valled or if extra revelation would be worth taking.

Liberty's Edge

Not to sound needy but we play tomorrow and I would love to have a concept ironed out. So far im looking at either aasimar with heaven mystery or half elf ancient lorekeeper with time mystery.

Liberty's Edge

I think that with the current composition of the party that the battle mystery would be redundant. After looking at heaven mystery, I think it may jumped to the top of my list. Anyone have any thoughts on time mystery would be helpful. I was going to go with aasimar but after seeing ancient lorekeeper I may need to look into the elf side. Thanks for the advice and keep the ideas coming.

Liberty's Edge

The party consists of a beastly fighter, a skill junky rogue, and a solid paladin. For the most part the melee is covered. So the role of a healer and a caster would be the most pressing need of the party. But nearly all of my experiance is with either sealth or combat classes so a little bit of a learning curve would apply.

Liberty's Edge

So my group and I have played 3.5 for a long time and about a year ago we made the switch to pathfinde. Since then we stuck with core classes so we could get an understanding of the changes. I am currently looking at building our groups first Oricl .The issue I am haveing is that I cant choose a mystery, battle and time inparticular have caught my eye. However, as intresting as battles abilities are I feel like it will have the same feel as a melee cleric. As for Time, again I love the abilities, but with Time I am having trouble understanding what role hey fill. Without a multiclass I dont understand where I would fall in the party dynamic.I am open to any other suggestions are welcome. There are other mysteries I would be open to and would also welcome any advice on feat, archetypes, and spells.

Greetings all, recently a few friens and I started to roll up some characters for a game. Due being late to the party I was last to pick race and class. The party needed a cleric and some additional meele support so I decided on a CN half orc cleric of gorum speced for meele combat. The irony is that despite "getting stuck" with this character this guy may have the best stats I have ever rolled: str 20, dex 16, con 16, int 15, wis 18, cha 16. I like and want to play the character but due to the way the my choices were more or less made for me I am having trouble coming up with a backstory except what the DM has told me which is the reason he is adventuring in the first place because he was asked to leave his temple ( not kicked out of his churchvor anything...just that temple) for unknown reasons.

In addition I need ideas for his ambitions beyond his current mission. Some sort of ultimate foal to work toward. Currently the group is trying to hijack the payment of an imperial trade caravan on route to a neighboring nation with the aim of brokering good will between nations. My cleric see this as an oppertunity to foment war between the two countries and by inciting conflict he is better serving Gorum. My third and final question is if my cleric is successful in bringing the two nations to war, how would Gorum reward that behavior if at all.
