Liberty's Edge

So my group and I have played 3.5 for a long time and about a year ago we made the switch to pathfinde. Since then we stuck with core classes so we could get an understanding of the changes. I am currently looking at building our groups first Oricl .The issue I am haveing is that I cant choose a mystery, battle and time inparticular have caught my eye. However, as intresting as battles abilities are I feel like it will have the same feel as a melee cleric. As for Time, again I love the abilities, but with Time I am having trouble understanding what role hey fill. Without a multiclass I dont understand where I would fall in the party dynamic.I am open to any other suggestions are welcome. There are other mysteries I would be open to and would also welcome any advice on feat, archetypes, and spells.

I like Metal, Life and Heaven myself. Metal gets lead blades and enlarge person. Wonderful combo. Life is a wonderful alternative healer. Heaven is amazing crowd control, making spells like color spray viable even past level 10!

Tell me the rest of the party and I can give advice on what niches there are to fill. The oracle is a very flexible class depending on what mystery you chose and you should make sure to fill in the gaps on your party.
In general:

life = healer
battle/metal= melee
fire = blasting (My fave)
dark tapestry = fun
time = never played that

The Oracle is a really wide-open class, so the first question: what kind of Oracle do you want?

A melee Oracle will look very different from a Necromancy-focused Oracle or a summons-focused Oracle or a straight heal-based Oracle.

An oracle like a cleric can fill any role and do it well. Unlike the cleric the oracle has to be more focused (by design). So you will fill whatever role you want. I'd start with what your style and work from there.

The party consists of a beastly fighter, a skill junky rogue, and a solid paladin. For the most part the melee is covered. So the role of a healer and a caster would be the most pressing need of the party. But nearly all of my experiance is with either sealth or combat classes so a little bit of a learning curve would apply.

Well you have no arcane. Ancient lorekeeper archetype combined with heavens oracle OR life oracle gets my vote. Both those mysteries strongly favor high charisma builds which means more spells that your going to need a lot of. Heavens oracle is ridiculously easy to play and life oracle is even easier.

2 alternatives: dual cursed archetype because you need a controller-ish character and that will complement any mystery well. 2) battle mystery could work for a bow to pretty good effectively.

An Ancient Lorekeeper Half-Elf is quite good, assuming your GM agrees with the official ruling that a Half-Elf can use Elven features.

If you use the Elven favored class bonus with an armor creating revelation like the Spirit Shield in Ancestors or the Air Barrier in Wind, you start to get a really, really good free armor as levels go up. You can pick up great offensive spells like Hideous Laughter and Confusion (where the fact that they're +1 level isn't a bad thing for spell DC) and great buffs like Mirror Image and Heroism from the Wizard list.

If you're OK with a 17CHA to start, you can have a very reasonably rounded character with potent defenses from your revelation armor and perhaps Mirror Image. You can then sit back and throw control spells, or you can stroll into dangerous situations to spread Aura of Doom and other fear effects like the Phantom Touch revelation or Cornugon Smash - perhaps using a reach weapon for great support tactics. Buffing with things like Heroism and/or Divine Favor will give you perfectly respectable effectiveness with a weapon (and Half-Elves can use Ancestral Arms for any weapon they want), even while you exert control through stacked fear. Causing foes to flee from you and your allies is often a death sentence if you stage it well, and if you pick up the Hurtful feat it may be over for your target before it begins.

I think that with the current composition of the party that the battle mystery would be redundant. After looking at heaven mystery, I think it may jumped to the top of my list. Anyone have any thoughts on time mystery would be helpful. I was going to go with aasimar but after seeing ancient lorekeeper I may need to look into the elf side. Thanks for the advice and keep the ideas coming.

Liberty's Edge

Not to sound needy but we play tomorrow and I would love to have a concept ironed out. So far im looking at either aasimar with heaven mystery or half elf ancient lorekeeper with time mystery.

I'd say go with Heaven mystery. I've been playing a Heaven Oracle in a Skulls and Shackles game, and I've been feeling like some kind of mix between Superman and Doctor Strange. It's been glorious feeling like the guy who may not have all the knowledge answers, but usually will control the fight long enough to save the occasional character.

Time mystery is kinda meh.

All of the revelations sound good on paper, not so much in practice (mostly due to extremely limited uses).

For Heavens oracle, Awesome display is, well, pretty darn awesome. Look it over, then think about combining it with color spray or hypnotic pattern.

I think Im going to settle on heavens mystery. I know gnome is the best mechanics wise, but it osent really do it for me in the flavor department. I know its racist but I dont like small creatures. I was also wondering if I should take Dual Cursed or whatever thats valled or if extra revelation would be worth taking.

Heavens is one that doesn't mess really well with ancient lore keeper and doesn't go off of favored class bonuses too well either. Furthermore many of its revelations just stink or at least don't need extra revelation be taken. Despite these truths do no be deterred.

I'd go agathion aasimar dual cursed heavens oracle. Curses I'd go tongues for the one that doesn't get better and blackened for your main one. Because of blackened you will stink as a warrior but will be a decent backup blaster. For revelations take misfortune, awesome display, and fortune in that order. TAke 8,12,13(15),,10,18(20) or 8,12,14(16),10,12,17(19).

Ok I have some updates. I think I am go with exactly what was suggested by Renegadeshepard. I have a ruling from the DM to keep heavens spell list depite taking dual cursed. Also I think I just rolled up a monster. (Scores in decending order) 18, 17, 16, 16, 15, 15. So thats awesome. Then a +2 con, +2 cha for racial. If I put the 17 in con it will bump up to 19 with bonuses, so at 4th lvl do I put point there to take it to 20 or go cha the whole time?

The only other thing I could ask of you mavelous people would be a lvl by lvl breakdown for feats and revelations, if somebody was so inclined. Thanks again fot helping me build a character Im excited to play.

It looks like you're filling the controller/buffer role with your current choices. Enhancing this with feats is the way to go. Consider Spell Focus (Illusion) to up the DC of your main control spells or possibly Spell Focus (Conjuration)->Augment Summons to beef up your other options. Improved Initiative is rarely a bad choice.

At level 9 or so you could consider the Flagbearer feat. It looks poor on paper, but combined with Banner of the Ancient Kings (magic item) attached to a longspear it's a combination of always-on party buff and initiative booster.

TBH Heavens is probably a good mystery to combine with the Spirit Guide Archetype. Get Awesome Display early on and use the Wandering Spirit the archetype grants you for spellcasting flexibility - NB this combines badly with Dual Cursed as you lack Revelations.

Grand Lodge

Just curious, why Aasimar? Was there a particular Heavens revelation you were considering buffing with its favored class bonus? Or just the extra +2 stat? In my opinion getting extra spells as a favored class bonus for a spontaneous caster would be better.

Some good feats:
Persistent Spell
Spell Focus(Illusion)
Greater Spell Focus(Illusion)
Expanded Arcana
Extra Revelation
Improved Initiative

Revelations:
1st Level: Misfortune
3rd Level: Awesome Display
5th Level: Fortune or Lure of the Heavens
7th Level: The other one from 5th level

I like Moonlight Bridge, Coat of Many Stars too.

Nuu. Heavens is the one mystery you should NOT pick dual-cursed with. Dual-Cursed oracle replaces the first three spell you get with your mystery - which, for a Heaven's oracle, means that you don't get color spray OR hypnotic patterns. Oracles don't get pattern spells on their own list. This means that until you actually get rainbow pattern at level 8, you have nothing to use your awesome display power on, which is a serious nerf to the Heavens mystery.

If you do want to go heaven's oracle, do it without an archetype, or use a non-replacing one like spirit guide. Most of the other archetypes will replace some of your mystery spells, which is fine for the other mysteries, but not for you.

Also, Aasimar can take the human favored class bonus by taking the Scion of Humanity racial feature.

He got permission to keep it.

Ah, I didn't see that (it was buried in-between posts). My apologies then.

was good advice though.

I went with aasimar (agathion) for the bonus to cha and con and for the flavor of it really. Yeah being able to keep original spell list is the only way dual cursed would even be viable with heavens mystery.

I love gnomes, so I will play all the ones you do not. I would have to advise against dual-cursed + Heavens unless you have another method of getting Color Spray, since Dual-Cursed replaces Color Spray with Ill Omen.

Liberty's Edge

DM ruled that I can keep original spell list.
