The only open water was in the rapids and we could not find any other ice thin enough to break through. The instructor cut a hole with a chainsaw for us to jump into the water. With the dry suit, PFD and enough clothing under the dry suit, it was pretty comfortable. We're currently sitting at just over a meter of snow on the ground, so only 10 cm until the record is broken. I will let Ray comment on mosquitoes ... we have nothing on Winnipeg.

Ahh ... was the snow above your waist? Tomorrow and Wednesday, I am at a Working on Ice / Ice Rescue course. We will be donning drysuits and going out to one of the local rivers that flows too quickly to freeze (we hope). Since I am probably the biggest person in the course, I get to be the "icebreaker". Meaning, if I can't break through the ice, then no one else can either. In that case, we step off the edge of the ice sheet instead. Forecast is for a high of -9C with wind chill around -20C. Wednesday has more snow in the forecast, so not as cold. |
