A Chelaxian Aasimar Absolutely Venerates Iomedae Despite Every Tiefling Living Beneath Asmodeus Authority

Legendary!

Thanks again.

Cheers Katina!

Are you able to confirm if the second item (Mutants & Masterminds—Third Edition: Hero's Handbook—Deluxe Edition) is in stock for this order?

Any chance of an update on this?

Thankyou :)

It appears 1 item in this order is out of stock, even though it was listed on the store as available.

Where do we go from here? Is there a partial refund or do you get new stock?

I am concerned about the second item in the order too as this is not exactly readily available elsewhere...is there any more information you can give me?

Thankyou!

So you are looking for an ability that trades out favoured enemy for a flat +1 bonus against everything that increases with level?

Lemme know if you find it, cos that seems like a very good deal :)

I am not sure if there is such an ability...all of the ones mentioned cost some action - Guide is the lowest cost as a swift action, but there are limited uses for that ability too.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

The Freebooter Archetype has a similar ability to the Guide Archetype noted by Java Man.

Seems like the Guide version is a better self-buff, whereas the Freebooter applies the buff to allies too (with conditions).

Still need to spend actions for both though.

Ok, another thought.

If I had not moved and one of the other party members had passed the perception check (knowing it is DC20, not 40) could they make the other party members 'aware' of his presence?

E.g:
Me: He sounds like he is gonna attack, but I cant see him!!!
Another player (who passed the perception check): Pretty sure he is up ahead, but I cant see him either. He might be invisible.

Assuming the bad guy hasn't acted yet, do we all then just roll in to initiative normally or would a surprise round still apply?

With my low wisdom my guy might still charge in future despite the danger!!! :D

A different example.
When you enter a dungeon, you expect to find some creatures inside it that you will have to fight, but each encounter will be a new initiative, and potential to be surprised.

Excellent point - thankyou :)

Numarak wrote:

Knowing that someone invisible is talking to you is not DC 20. Sorry, someone had to say this. The moment you hear what that creature says and you understand what it says, there is no surprise round.

You enter combat and your problem is that you can not see your foe, but your problem is not that you are not in combat and surprised.

And this was the argument I originally made. It appears from the comments above people are saying it could have been some other magical effect (magic mouth or ventriloquism for example), and thus I could not actually be aware of his presence (and thus satisfy the conditions for acting in the surprise round).

At this point Initiative had not been rolled despite my character initiating an aggressive action

Thankyou all for your help - just trying to puzzle out the whole scenario :)

So to summarise, based on what I have described (Bad guy speaks, I immediately charge move assuming he is up ahead, the whole party is in the same location and close to each other):

  • There should have been a surprise round
  • There should have been Perception checks all around with a DC of 20 (so everyone had the chance to become 'aware' of the bad guy, even if it required a natural 20 as it did in my case. This would only have made us aware of his presence, not his specific location
  • My guy was legitimately hit by a readied action and it was correct for my GM to NOT apply the charge penalty

Still no way to avoid this in future though...bummer.

If you will indulge me with 1 last theoretical question?

The party gets word of an ambush waiting for them whilst they are travelling. The messenger advises the location of the ambush and other key details.

If the party are fully prepared for the ambush, but don't roll high enough perception to see the stealthed enemy I am assuming a surprise round would still occur based on the responses here?

Well, he was literally just talking to us, and that was what triggered my to move towards him, sword in hand.

I guess this brings up another issue...if he literally just spoke, but stopped when I started moving, does he get the bonus for being silent?

Also, for clarity, my perception is +0 (yeah, I know), but the whole party was together during this and others have a MUCH higher perception than me (we are all lvl 12), so should they have all got perception rolls for the chance to act in the surprise round too?

Still struggling with a way to avoid this in future. At the very minimum I can admit when I am wrong, but characters should learn from their mistakes (though my paladin is low Wisdom, so maybe he didnt?) :)

Chess Pwn wrote:

Yes, that's partly why I'm so surprised that 1, this guy is sure he couldn't get high enough with his perception, and that apparently no one in the party could?

OR
2 No one thought to attempt a roll to actually check if an enemy was there. And the GM runs a game where if you don't say it you don't do it and so no free perception checks.

Like what I'd do was start having everyone attempt a perception to check if he was present, hopefully at least 1 beats that DC 0 check, then have everyone start trying to pin down his location. Sure that would probably trigger the bad guy popping a surprise round as soon as he sees we're searching for him, before we find him and maybe some of us wouldn't have found him to act in the surprise round with him, but I bet some would have.

In the actual words of my GM in a private response to one of the statements above):

GM wrote:
I rolled this (perception) for the other Paladin that was nearby while the BBEG moved to his final position. He did not succeed, I didn’t roll this when the rest of the party moved closer as the BBEG was immobile and hence had +40 to his stealth check from being invisible and immobile. No-one in the party could have perceived him at this point.

For something like this we usually DO get perception checks

I am fairly sure the GM did NOT give me a penalty to AC, so lets assume it was a move action rather than a charge (and perhaps the term 'charge' was used in a descriptive sense, rather than a mechanical one).

I still feel like a surprise round issue remains and the vague description of 'awareness' doesn't help. The Ultimate Intrigue rules do seem to read like errata for this issue however.

I guess the voice could have been a magical effect, but I don't think it is unreasonable for my character to assume the actual person was in the room ahead...he has seen invisibility before (and knows the bad guy can use this spell) and therefore would have assumed the bad guy was invisible/obscured and up ahead somewhere. At this point he was ready for combat though.

It may seem like a small issue, but it made the difference between only me acting vs the whole party getting a turn in that first round, plus I lost any ability to complete an attack myself.

So how would I handle this in the future to avoid this happening again?

  • Hide and wait for the bad guy to act, in which the bad guys always get a surprise round (my perception skill is not high enough to reliably detect an invisible enemy)?
  • Move forward and still incur the readied action in the 'surprise round' without being able to retaliate myself?
  • Something else???

Is there a way to trigger initiative, knowing combat is imminent (both me as a player and my character are prepared for this), without incurring a surprise round?

From memory we were taking the guard to the surface to get him help, then the bad guy says something along the lines of:

'leaving so soon? I'm afraid it is time to end this'

at which point my Paladin charges (moves) toward the voice.

We were situated in the second last room of the dungeon and it was a straight line to the stairs heading up to the surface. The voice came from in front of us though the space between the 2 last rooms had fog in between.

I guess my thoughts were that to be surprised you had to be in a state of unpreparedness, not prepared and charging in to combat (or at least a situation where you were prepared to start combat). Kinda think that is all built in to the term 'surprise'.

The way it was put to me was this was like a horror movie, where you have the victim in a dark room who knows the bad guys is out there, but he creeps up from behind anyway and takes the victim by surprise, but I think this analogy works better for a rogue using stealth and sneak attack more than surprise mechanics.

ShieldLawrence wrote:
I'm pretty sure the "awareness" for surprise rounds is covered by the Ultimate Intrigue rules on Skills in conflict. Since the baddie is invisible but the good guys are aware of his presence due to his voice and announcing himself, he wouldn't get a surprise round. If the baddie had attacked without announcing it, the good guys would get their perception vs. stealth for the surprise round.

Just found the 4 states of awareness thing from UI. Was not aware of these rules and they are very interesting, not just the perception ones!

So going by these rules I would have fallen in to:

Aware of Presence::
The next state is when the perceiving creature is aware of the sneaking creature's presence, though not of anything beyond that. This is the state that happens when an invisible creature attacks someone and then successfully uses Stealth so the perceiving creature doesn't know where the attacker moved, or when a sniper succeeds at her Stealth check to snipe.

A perceiving creature that becomes aware of a hidden creature's presence will still be aware of its presence at least until the danger of the situation continues, if not longer (though memory-altering magic can change this).

and the surprise round would have been negated, unless I am reading that wrong.

Cevah wrote:

Your charge began initiative.

He can ready an action only if he beats your initiative.
He can AoO, if he has reach and is not flat footed or has a suitable class feature [like rogues do] allowing it.
You can charge in a surprise round. PRD under Full Round action is Charge[4]. The note is "4 May be taken as a standard action if you are limited to taking only a single action in a round." Full details on charge here.

You, however, cannot charge an invisible creature because "If you don't have line of sight to the opponent at the start of your turn, you can't charge that opponent."

To make this work, you need to succeed at a perception check to locate the bad guy. That gives you LoS. Now you can charge, and it is a surprise round. However, if his initiative is better than yours, he could do something to avoid your charge, or ready an action for it.

/cevah

Cool. But I would definitely get a perception check to grant me awareness of the bad guy and therefore negate the surprise round, right?

Good point.

That being the case, my guy would have taken a full move action forward prepared for combat.

Yes, he wanted combat to begin, but no, he wouldn't be stupid enough to put himself at risk by 'charging'/running without a clear target.

The centre of the room we were heading too was perhaps 60 feet away, so there would be no value to actually charging without a target knowing I could not resolve an attack at the end anyway, and I wasn't trying to get to any specific point in the room (which means additional movement was not a priority or needed in this case).

The only thing that then would have changed is that I wouldn't have had the AC penalties from charging when the bad guy made is readied attack on me (I think).

Cool - and Thankyou.

I can live with that, though I would have preferred to just roll initiative before I started charging, which to my thinking was the moment when combat actually started.

I would have taken the readied attack on my paladin, but then could at least have done something useful in that round.
Just seems a little counter intuitive to begin fighting only to be told I cant actually attack when I know the guy is somewhere up ahead even if i cant see him.

So to my thinking it would have been a normal combat round (not surprise):

1) Me charge
2) Bad guy delivers readied attack from invisibility once I am in range
3) I resolve my charge attack normally, once I can see him, or roll miss chance if he stays invisible etc.

I also think I should have at least have got a perception check to detect he is there, perhaps with a bonus because I actually heard his voice in the room ahead and already knew he had utilised invisibility previously.

Thems the breaks though and the GMs rules as he sees fit.

At last nights game I had something come up and I am really not sure of the correct way to handle this. will try to be as general as possible to avoid spoilers.

Background:
Our party was going around a dungeon and there was a bad guy teleporting around, talking to us etc as we cleared the rooms. Clearly a bad guy from the way he was talking.

So we find someone in need of rescue (who had been messed up physically and mentally by the bad guy) and we are escorting him to the surface.

We get to the last room before heading up to the surface an the 'voice' declares it is time to end it all.

At this point my paladin is very angry after what has been done to the guy we are rescuing and charges towards the voice, sword drawn ready for combat.

So the question is as follows:

My paladin has heard the bad guy, but cant see him (he is invisible). He decides to charge towards the 'voice' to attack.

At this point initiative has not been rolled.

As soon as he is in an adjacent square to the bad guy, the GM unleashes an attack on my paladin (unclear on whether this was meant to be a readied action or an AoO, but I think readied action).

I felt that at this point my paladin should be able to complete his charge and attack the bad guy, but my GM ruled that this was a surprise round and I was surprised, and therefore could not complete my action (or more accurately ruled that my movement was my whole action for this 'round').

The surprise rules are fairly vague, stating only that you need to be aware of your enemy and I am honestly not sure of what was correct here.

Also, after all this occurred we then rolled initiative and proceeded with the battle.

Please help me :)

4 reasons really:

1) Lack of spare $$$ (I did manage to complete my Runelords set though).

2) Falling Australian $ against the US

3) two words 'Australia' & 'Shipping' (costs...well, that's 3 words....!)

4) My friend bought it. So now I have RotRL and He has S&S. should be able to sort out playing between us. As an aside - he only knew about it from me though, so we are even - 1 in and 1 out :)

1) Is there any way to convert it into a HTML document like a Wiki and upload it? I guess that's what you meant with export, and that it's not in yet?

2) Also, does the GM version include the Player version? (AKA, I'm the GM in my campaign, but can I then use the same program as a player in another?)

3) You mention "player notes" does that mean players can add their own notes to things? For example, they meet and I reveal "Malcom McSuspicious" but they don't really know anything about him yet. They suspect through clue linking that he might be the head of a local gang of cutthroats, but have no proof whatsoever, it's mostly a gut feeling of the players. Can they now add "possible leader of the gang" to it, or would I have to do it? (Because if I do it, it kinda gets an "official" touch, and they might take it as Word of God even if it was totally wrong)

4) To actually use and sync with the Player Edition, I gotta have the Cloud service too?

1) Not currently but there has been multiple requests for exporting data, and I believe it is on their roadmap (more info about the recent feature request survey here)

2) Yes - If you have the GM version, you can use that to connect as a player in another game.

3) I believe the players enter notes themselves. Those notes will also hyperlink to revealed topics if relevant.

4) If the GM of the campaign has the cloud, the players do not require cloud access/subscription to sync IIRC (I only use the GM version).

I recommend this program - I just started a kingmaker game via D20Pro and Teamspeak, with Realm Works managing our campaign info. The hyperlinking is so good...you no longer have to remember where you put the notes for that blacksmith 3 towns back. If it is in Realm Works it is only a click away.

ok - so I should probably explain a bit further.

No, a level 6 monk does not qualify for Vital Strike, but we are running a heavily modified E6 campaign whereby we continue to accrue feats, including custom feats that increase things like BAB etc.

So, my Monk is level 6, but has accrued 3 additional feats (in place of progressing to Level 9). The first 2 feats I picked are custom ones that increase BAB by +1 each (and this feat can only be taken twice), then I added Vital Strike.

Next up is clustered shots!

But, yeah, it is a little complicated but we were aiming for a E6-E8 campaign, with custom feats boosting us up a little over 6th level in terms of power.

True, true but I am playing a Zen Archer monk which gives Weapon Specialization as a bonus feat at level 6.

Works very nicely in an E6 campaign.

Thankyou for your help Chaoseffect :)

Real quick thread - just need someone to have a glance over my critical damage outputs.

Current base damage 1d8+4 (Longbow+2 with weapon specialization) and I have the feats, Point Blank Shot (+1 Damage within 30ft), Vital Strike (extra damage die/d8 on a standard attack) and Deadly Aim (-2 to hit, +4 damage).

Long bow critical damage is 19-20/x3 (thanks to Bracers of Falcon's Aim)

So I have worked out my basic critical rolls to be:

Critical - Basic Attack
3d8+12

Critical - Deadly Aim
3d8+24

Critical - Point Blank Shot
3d8+15

Critical - Vital Strike
4d8+12

Critical Combined - Deadly Aim & Point Blank Shot
3d8+27

Critical Combined - Deadly Aim & Vital Strike
4d8+24

Critical Combined - Point Blank Shot & Vital Strike
4d8+15

Critical Combined - Deadly Aim & Point Blank Shot & Vital Strike
4d8+27

Are these numbers correct? Have I missed anything?

Thankyou for your help :)

Page count is 494 (the same as the hardcover only), so I would hazard a guess it does not.

How easy would the Paizo kingdom building rules fit in to this campaign?

Endzeitgeist's review does mention sandboxy content, i just haven't had a chance to dissect this book yet and wondered if this would be a good fit?

I found one Here

Holy moley - so glad I backed this.

KS projects can sometimes be of, ahem 'variable' quality (in terms of the physical product...luckily all the KS projects I have backed have content which has been pretty awesome), but this looks amazing.

Gimme, Gimme, Gimme :)

It amazes me that, after 5 pages of comments complaining about the lack of updates, when we get an update, those same people complain that it isn't good enough. Surprise surprise.

We've been given a timeframe for the next instalment, and art previews to show work is still being undertaken on book three. It has also proved wrong the cynics that said Gary had disappeared into the wide blue yonder with our money. We just need patience. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see the books incomplete until mid 2015... I've been waiting a lot longer for 'The Winds of Winter'.

In five years time after finishing play on an epic and original campaign we will look back and have totally forgotten a years delay. The series, the company, and Gary will be remembered for the quality of the product first and foremost, and that will determine the success of future kick starters. Whatever the nay-Sayers may think.

Provided the quality is there Gry can take as long as he likes, in fact I'd say it is imperative he does so. The reaction to his update only goes to show why he would stay away - a number of posters using any comment as a reason to launch an attack. Who wants to work in that environment. The surest way to guarantee defensiveness is to go on the offence.

For my part, I'm not complaining about it being late. I'm complaining about not being kept in the loop.

The delay doesnt matter to me at all. What bothers me is promising one thing and then not explaining why when you change your undertaking. (I dont understand why I havent gotten book one yet, for example - I dont really care that I havent gotten it yet, I care that he hasnt told me why).

/Agree wholeheartedly.

Delays are par for the course on Kickstarter, but keeping your backers (financiers!) in the loop is a small courtesy, forgotten by many (but not all - I wont mention any names, but a certain other high profile RPG Kickstarter has been WELL OVER 12 months late, but kept it's backers informed about progress and delays along the way. Only now are they starting fulfilment, but with good communications a multitude of 'sins' are easily forgiven).

I still have concerns that are not fully alleviated by the update, but my position appears to be the same as Steve's...Delays are actually OK (and somewhat expected), just talk to us so we don't have to worry about it unnecessarily.

Is it possible that this update is only being posted now (close to the deadline for the project - March 2014) to satisfy kickstarter criteria that delayed projects need to keep backers updated?

The KS FAQ says:
If problems come up, creators are expected to post a project update (which is emailed to all backers) explaining the situation. Sharing the story, speed bumps and all, is crucial. Most backers support projects because they want to see something happen and they'd like to be a part of it. Creators who are honest and transparent will usually find backers to be understanding.

It's not uncommon for things to take longer than expected. Sometimes the execution of the project proves more difficult than the creator had anticipated. If a creator is making a good faith effort to complete their project and is transparent about it, backers should do their best to be patient and understanding while demanding continued accountability from the creator.

If the problems are severe enough that the creator can't fulfill their project, creators need to find a resolution. Steps could include offering refunds, detailing exactly how funds were used, and other actions to satisfy backers.

I hate to think it, but posting this update, now, could be just a way to keep kickstarter at bay if serious questions are asked by backers about the likelihood of this project being completed (especially this close to the estimated completion date).

Maybe I am just being too cynical/suspicious...?

I gotta agree with Kthulhu too. Even if this does get completed, there will be no further support from me via kickstarter, and possibly not even for completed products, given the way we have been treated us as backers.

I don't honestly know how to feel about this one.

One 1 hand I am glad for news and it rekindles my hope for the project, but on the other I have already been through all the stages of grieving and given up on the project.

I guess I will take any news as good and try to keep my small hopes alive that this will reach completion.

On the positive side - having accepted that the money I pledged was down the drain, any further fulfilment on this project will be a nice bonus :)

Excellent and helpful link. Thankyou TheCelticCircle :)

The more I read about this stuff the more I am interested.

I am even thinking about DM'ing/setting up a RP heavy game myself (our real life 'in person' game is pretty combat heavy, though we do mix it up from time to time).

Just 1 more question though - Is it considered 'bad form' to start a non-Pathfinder game on these boards?

I was thinking about World of Darkness. I love Pathfinder, but I want to try something new and the new WOD stuff makes me salivate.

*Edit* I now see this is the wrong forum for this thread. Is it possible for a mod to move it to the correct location please?

Thankyou for your response Ghost!

Yes, I have been looking through the other threads and I see what you mean...lots of variety and they set the guidelines quite well.

Appreciate knowing the selection process stuff and that I may not get picked. Helps to know this to set the (my) right expectations.

Aah - I see the dice roller. Very clever :)

Hi all,

I hope this is the right place to post this query (if not, could a moderator please move it).

A little background:
Currently I co-GM a Pathfinder campaign (Rise of the Runelords) with a group of 6 players (+ us 2 GMs). We have a diverse group of players at different levels of RPG/Pathfinder experience, and with different gameplay styles (optimisers, min/max'ers and RP focussed players).

I have been playing since 2e D&D, but skipped 3/3.5 picked up 4th ed (tried to make it work, but it didn't for our group), then switched to Pathfinder.

So recently I have been feeling the desire to exercise my 'player' side again. With kids etc. and living in Australia, and online game via VTT just wasn't going to work for me, but a friend (Actually one of my players and the guy who got me in to D&D way back when) has played a bunch of games via PBEM games and I thought I would look in to it.

So - A few questions:

  • How does an online play by post game actually work? Is it possible for someone to give me a brief run-down of what I need to know, including how mechanics are handled (like dice rolls)?

  • How do I find a game to get involved is? Is there an application process, or is there anything that is generally 'good form' or 'bad form' when looking for games to participate in?

  • How often is it expected you post in games? Daily? Weekly?

  • What books are usually permitted? Core only? Paizo only? 3rd party? Is this usually determined by the GM?

  • Anything else? Is there anything else I should know before looking in to this further or committing to a game?

More details about me:
Demographics.
I am 38 years old, male, from Australia.

Player/play-style details
I am not as interested in making overly min/max characters, but I do enjoy characters with their own personality, even if flawed. I am not against optimised characters however, but that is secondary to me.

I am prepared to try new things, new classes etc. Generally I don't mind picking classes/skills/feats that will complement the rest of the party.

I usually like to RP quite a bit (see my previous character below). Is that expected or a problem at all?

One of my recent characters:

(Obviously from a game targeted at adults, and yeah, my character was female....don't hold that against me :P)

'Skye'

I swear if we eat the same swill for dinner 1 more night I am going to kill someone. That’s what 5 years of lentil soup will do to a girl.

It wasn’t always like this though.

I remember when I was little, living in Waterdeep. My Father was a wizard of no small note and made a decent living providing spells and information on consignment to various customers, ranging from travelling merchants seeking protection or enchanted locks on chests carrying valuable items, wards for wealthy citizens homes, and even some work for the local guard on occasion, often varying wildly in nature. My mother supported my father at home and we were happy.

Then came the day the druids came to the shop. My father always placed great value on education and loved a good debate. So it was that he engaged the druids in a lengthy discourse on the nature of their faith. It turned out to be a great coup for the druids who had come seeking a wizard for work on the Moonshaes and left with a new convert to match. Father soon made plans to move our small family permanently to the Moonshaes, not just for his work, but to be closer to the druids and his new faith.

I was 14. I had to leave all my friends, my schooling and all that I had known. Leave it all for some commune of religious fanatics. Needless to say I was less than impressed.

5 years later and we were still here. Mother had embraced the druidic faith of Chauntea, just as father had. I was the last hope for my family, holding out on the religious conversion and it was starting to wear thin.

As I sat at the dinner table waiting for the ‘meal’ to arrive I was acutely aware all the history of the past 5 years. My father had pressured me to accept the new faith of the family, but I could not in good conscience do so. I just didn’t believe it. Then came the change in focus for my studies...moving away from general academia to nature based studies and theological learning. My Father wanted me to spend time will the local youth (mostly children of churchy parents and inheriting the faith of their parents). I swear he even had designs on me marrying one of the local boys. Not me!

Whenever I tried to talk to my dad about how I felt here he just told me to ‘relax’ and ‘chill out’. Gods he had become such a hippie. I think he may have even swapped his tobacco for the green weed on occasion.

Around my 15th birthday I realised my true power. It was if something that was always there just fell in to place. At first a few strange things started happening. Objects I was thinking of moved without me touching them, or I had a sudden flash of otherworldly insight in to a situation. I knew straight away it was magic, but this was different from the magic of my father. So I started getting out on my own a bit and experimenting with my power.

I met Mouse in my 17th year. I was wandering around outside Caer Callidyrr (not too far away from the town however as it was dangerous to go too far), when I felt a presence, like that of a close friend. I felt and urge to call out, but not with my voice and so I did just that…and waited. About 20 minutes later a large hawk landed not 5 metres from me, with a large mouse in its beak. It was strange, but I could feel the hawk and sense his emotions. He skipped over to me and laid the mouse at my feet, looking up at me expectantly. I somehow knew we would be very good friends, and so I gave him the name Mouse, in honour of his first gift to me. He would have to be kept secret for now though.

Now at age 19 I was ready to begin making my own way in the world. Endless arguments with my parents about living here had done no good and there was only 1 thing for it. I made a decision to leave.

I spent a few days visiting the docks looking for passenger ships to take me back to Waterdeep and whilst there were no ships leaving straight away I chanced upon another opportunity. One beautiful spring morning I overheard the captain of a merchant vessel complaining that his weather insurance, in the form of a wizard, had taken ill and would not be able to make the return journey. Only 1 thing for it really. I approached the captain and proceeded to offer my services. He was sceptical at first, given my age, but I showed him a few tricks and he seemed satisfied. The best part was the weather was fine, so I should need to lift a finger for the voyage to Waterdeep, which was good considering I didn’t actually know any weather spells.

I stole away early the morning we were due to depart, leaving a brief note to my parents – I am not totally heartless. I also took some money from my father’s office to make sure I could survive at least a little while. A quick trip to the markets saw me outfitted in basic adventuring gear and supplies, and we left midmorning. The ship departed in a north easterly directions and all was going well until 2 things happened.

The first was that as soon as we were out sight of the islands the ship turned south. I wondered why this was, until I started taking my first good look at the crew. They did seem fairly seedy even for sailors. I politely asked the captain if there was a problem, and he informed me there was a change of plan and we were going to Amn. Great. Smugglers then. I glanced up and saw mouse drifting overhead. At least I had 1 friend nearby.

The second problem happened about ½ a day away from the Amn port of Athkatla. I swear the weather was fine the whole journey until out of nowhere came a fierce looking storm. The captain, or pirate, I wasn’t sure anymore, looked calm as he glanced to me and said ‘ShowTime’. My blood ran cold.

I had nothing, and as the storm rolled I felt a sickness that had nothing to do with the sea. So I did the only thing I could think of. I bluffed. I started gesturing and loudly speaking a string of gibberish that sounded vaguely like one of my father’s spells. I even mixed in some of the basic magical powers and effects I had taught myself for good measure, but the storm still hit us. Hard.

Needless to say it took some effort for the captain and the sailors to actually make the port and though no lives or cargo were lost, by the time we arrived my hands were bound in front of me and I was tied to the railing for good measure. The storm didn’t actually last that long either.

I was the last once to be unloaded from the ship when we made the port. The captain was waiting on the docks as I walked ashore, looking very smug. Well it couldn’t get any worse, so I straightened my back and squeezed my arms together to highlight my body, blinked a few times and looked up to him. ‘Surely we can work something out’ I said pushing all the charm I possessed, ‘you wouldn’t want to hurt a little girl for such a small mistake would you? Maybe you would.”I arched my back a little. He stopped and I could almost see the wheels turning in his head. Then he licked his lips and I knew I had him. Briefly.

It was at this precise moment I heard a voice coming from the shore.
‘Alessandro you pig, get away from that little girl! I swear every time I let you out of my sight you can’t help yourself. And this one is barely out of her nappy’
Gods, the bastard had a wife.

After he had told his wife my story, she looked upon me with malice and contempt. It was her idea what to do next.

‘Send her to Madam Rezuli’s, she should fetch a good price there’, she said.
A business woman then. If they hadn’t taken my gold maybe I could have bought my way free. On the positive side I got to keep my skin for a while longer.

Madam Rezuli was an old fat woman who looked after a whorehouse on the south side of town. I noted the twin guards on the door to her establishment as we entered. She looked me up and down and negotiated a price with the captain and left me there. The bottom floor was made up of a foyer and bar area, with a second level which I assumed would contain bedrooms, though I use the term loosely. I had been with a man before, but always by choice and had no intention of sleeping with strangers to pad someone else’s purse. I had to find a way out.

The madam took me upstairs to a large room where several women were getting dressed up and made up, both in garish fashion. I was told to sit and not move.

Several hours later Rezuli returned and had another good look at me.
“Yes, yes, you will do nicely my dear. I hope you are ready to earn me plenty of money and maybe a favour or 2. Tell me – are you a virgin?”

I shook my head.

“Pity” she said, “but regardless I have an important customer coming tonight and you are going to entertain him”.

She clapped her hands to summon 2 of the girls in the room over and gave instructions to them to ‘prepare me’.

Thankfully they did not paste their makeup all over my face, but the clothes they dressed me in left little to the imagination. I wore a black dancer’s leotard, and then they put a leather corset (also black) on me, with large black leather boots coming up to my thighs. Over this they made me wear a light pullover of sorts that covered my shoulders and tied around my waist. Well at least I had my mobility I thought, especially if I had to run. What I really needed was a distraction.

Unfortunately I had run out of time. I hadn’t noticed the sun going down as the women prepared me, and now the sounds of the common room filling up below me became apparent. Music and men’s voices filled the air.

Rezuli returned shortly after to take me downstairs. Before we left the women’s room however she gave me a stern talking to about what was expected. I stared to get a bit nervous at this point as my escape options were running out. Alessandro had not mentioned my magical talents, whether from the thought of getting a lower price for me, or perhaps thinking me to be a complete fraud, so I still had that ace in the hole.

We went downstairs and I was told to sit at the bar and drink nothing but water. The barkeep was advised to keep an eye on me. Nothing for it but waiting then…. again.

I could see the girls plying their trade around me, some more comfortable than others. Some had a faraway look their eyes. Drugged most likely. Disgusting.

Then the important customer arrived.

Rezuli approached him with a beaming smile. “Sir Gossum always a pleasure to see you, our most valued customer. We have a special treat for you tonight.”

And then he was brought to the bar, a drink handed to him and ‘introduced’ to me. For the second time today my blood ran cold. He passes his eyes over me appraising my every feature, and I could see the hunger in his eyes. Rezuli escorted us both upstairs (I guess to keep an eye on me more than anything), and showed us to a private room.

And that’s when it all went bad.

Gossum finished his drink and began to kiss me. I pushed him away from me, disgusted with his behaviour and he just smiled. ‘Good to have a little fight in you’, he smiled and approached me again. I retreated to the other side of the room’s large bed. It didn’t stop him as he jumped lightly on top of the bed and bounced over to stand next to me. I had a good view of the window from here and the bars keeping me in. he moved closer to me and I decided to be a bit more forceful this time, pushing him hard in to the wall. He hit his head, not hard, but hard enough to become enraged. He grabbed my arm and slapped me in the face, pushing me on the bed. Then he started to undo his pants. Anger and fire flashed in my eyes and I called up my power.

I guess it was the last thing Gossum expected as bright lights flashed between us. The room was dimly lit to begin with and the light hit him square in the eyes.

That’s when he lost it.

“You b%&@@, you have blinded me!”

He stumbled around the room for a while until he found the door and opened it. Madam Rezuli had obviously heard the noise as she was making her way up the stairs to our room. I sat calmly on the corner of the bed.

Rezuli and Gossum exchanged harsh words and I could tell Rezuli was trying to placate her valued customer. In the end an agreement must have been reached. They both entered the room with one of the guards from downstairs.

They bound my hands (sigh), and ordered the guard to watch me.

Gossum stood over me. “Tomorrow we will see how much you really DO like fighting miss.” He then turned to Rezuli and said he would be back for me in the morning.

Rezuli turned to get some women in to change my clothes and Gossum cut her off. “Leave them on her. Might get a bit more entertainment from her in that garb…the crowd should like it”. Then he left.

Well at least I didn’t have to sleep with anyone just yet.

The next morning Gossum came and picked me up from Rezuli’s (Rezuli continued to apologise and make as many concessions to him as she could). We walked through the streets for an hour or so before I saw the Colosseum. It was huge, and it was clear that’s where we were headed. I did not speak whilst we walked, but as we neared the Colosseum Gossum turned to me an explained the situation. “Here you will fight for your life witch. Survival depends on how well you fight. You had plenty of fight last night and I suggest you remember that attitude when you enter the arena”. His smile sent chills down my spine.

He took me to a large cage where several other people, slaves I guess, were sitting and standing around and shoved me in, then locked the door. There was at least 1 guard on the door and possibly more around elsewhere.

All in all not the best start to my adventures, but I hadn’t been killed or raped yet, so it could get better…or worse…

So, yeah - Thankyou for taking the time to read this and thankyou in advance for any advice you could give me as a newbie to PBP.

Has anyone received the Way of the Wicked PDF's they purchased as a backer of Throne of Night yet?

Yeah - Got my WotW Pdf's in short order after the KS (Via DTRPG).

Still - The kickstarter model of malleable delivery dates continues to hold true. Grrrr.

And I agree with Umarian. Delayed products is forgivable, Lack of communication is not.
Generally I am pretty forgiving with KS deadlines as that is the nature of the business model, just keep me informed please!

*edit* just checked my emails and the email notification for the WotW PDFs was dated 6 June.

For the record I co-DM a campaign with 6 players (ranging from 1 new player, several moderately experienced players, 2 players who have a strong understanding of the system, 1 DM who is very experienced and me, who is a moderately experienced player/DM).

Most of the players have been playing since 3rd D&D edition, with a few of us playing since 1E (intermittently).

We started with vanilla Pathfinder and wound up our campaign last year at around 15th level (from memory).

So, then we decided to play RotRL anniversary and my co-DM suggested E6 rules. I was very hesitant about the whole thing, for fear of breaking the system, but we agreed to let the players choose.

ALL 6 players said they were keen to try it.

We didn't pressure or coerce them - just stated what it would entail and they all voted in favour of E6.

I gotta give some credit to my players - they are not mindless idiots who need to be told what to do. In fact several of the players understand the mechanics way better that I do (although my co-DM has a very good understanding too).

We aim for a co-operative game where everyone can have fun and letting the players direct part of how they want the game run is part of that.

Oh - and for the record (again) we have no problems running high level games, in terms of the mechanics/concepts. The last campaign wrapped up, with a over-the-top set piece battle involving epic level characters (level 60...completely broken, mind you) battling gods and demons. High level play is not scary, just 'bloated' (that's the best word I could come up with. Just complex and time consuming, but not any more difficult).

Not saying E6 is superior or the 'best' system, but it might be the best system for our group of players.

thankyou :)

Love the products and the whole line generally, but cant continue with poor Aussie $ and shipping costs.

Please cancel my AP subscription.

Will probably just purchase the PDFs from now on.

Let me first say that I love the Pathfinder Adventure Path subscription I have.

The problem for me is that I live in Australia and the shipping fees, in conjunction with the falling Aussie $, is making is very expensive for me and I am tempted to cancel the subscription altogether.

I know you guys can't do anything about the international money market and exchange rates (or can you...?), but have you considered having a option to keep subscribing, and hold all volumes until the AP is complete, then ship them all together?

I would be prepared to keep paying monthly, receive access to the pdf's when they release, but hold the volumes to ship all at the end (i.e 2 bulk shipments/year approx).

I am sure this would save me a bit in shipping, based on previous orders and the costs associated with single larger shipments.

Well - not sure if this is, or could be an option, but it would certainly save me from what appears to be an inevitable cancellation request in the future.

Cheers,

Wow - that was quick!

Thanks heaps for the response :)

Ultimately I may be able to get both (work is changing our holiday pay system as we are getting pro-rata - woohoo!), but it might arrive after the KS ends, and I don't want to miss out on exclusive KS gear (whether that is the 32 page adventure or the WotW book 7).

Well, this adventure path looks pretty good, and the reviews are positive, both for the individual parts and overall.

Looks like $60 is as far as my budget will stretch at this point.

I have looked at the new kickstarter (which also looks very interesting) but I cant afford both. So it looks like it is better the devil you know, and I think I will get the WotW PDF's.

I have a few questions.

1) Will part 7 of this AP (from the KS) be commercially available once completed, or is this a KS exclusive?

2) Will the Throne of Night AP be available for non-KS backers? Is the price likely to be in line with what I see here ($10 per PDF)?

3) (Sorry if this seems overly miserly or cheap, but I don't have unlimited funds) - Given $10 per PDF price here =$60 total, would it not be better for me to back the KS @ $1 level then add the $57 for the WotW Pdf's (Saving a whopping $2!!!). The REAL reason for this question relates to the $32 page adventure at the $40000 level on the KS. As I plan to eventually get the Throne of Night AP, I want the 32 page adventure too, but again, can't really afford both this and the WotW book 7 at the same time. Might be able to stretch a few dollars for the bonus adventure though, given this appears to be an exclusive.

4) Part of the reason I actually do like buying on Paizo is the ability to re-download files in case of bad things happening on my computer. If I WAS to be able to back the KS, would there be a download service in place to re-download files etc, should I need to? (I know this is getting a bit off-topic - sorry). Ideally, I would like to receive delivery via Paizo...are there any plans for this?

Sorry for all the questions and thankyou for your time :)

Jaynay

Well this book looks mega-interesting.
So - what is the deal with pre-ordering? Is the PDF included if you pre-order only?
Thankyou :)

More than likely, Lone Wolf will do what they do with Pathfinder books and Hero Lab. When an AP comes out they will offer the Realm Works files for them at a price, probably something around $10.

I could see that happening, and also that is a good way to ensure content does not get distributed illegally too.

I just hope it is $10 for each entire AP (for example) as it could get quite costly ($120 extra/year!!!)

then again - what is to stop someone just buying the Realm Works files for the reduced price?

I would prefer to have a purely digital subscription (as noted above) and if that is not possible, then a small add on cost to the current AP cost (like $5 for each module - still $60 extra a year!)

This would in turn make the AP price go up for print products as they would order less, which would put a bigger burden on the PDF subscription, raising that price. Because of the high prices, people would cancel their AP subscription, making the order number lower and raising the price for both even more. which means more people would quit, price would go up, more would quit, price would go up, ad nausium.... Vic has discussed this before.

Fair comment. I don't actually want to stop getting the physical books, but space and shipping costs are going to be the deciding factors eventually. I am sure I am not the only one out there with this issue (especially for shipping international) and subscription will drop anyway if the price increases. Everyone has their limits.

Having said that - current AP is $22.99 + shipping. with Pathfinder advantage that comes down to $16.10 (roughly) + shipping.

If Paizo introduced a digital only option as detailed above (or close to) I would be prepared to pay, say - a flat $20/month.

I am just looking for options here. Perhaps they could add this as a premium content option for existing AP subscribers (say $5 extra a month). they could even add an option to waive physical product shipping.

I still think there is merit in this sort of content and hopefully Paizo will consider these sorts of options.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but here goes (please move me, if this is the wrong place).

I am a recent convert to Pathfinder and I love the adventure paths (started with Skull & Shackles, but bought Kingmaker and RotRL anniversary ed.). The quality of the physical books and overall writing is fantastic.

My group has also been using Herolab for sometime and also been following the Realm Works program development, and now the kickstarter).
Realm Works

I plan on running all my campaigns through Realm Works once it launches.

Thing is - as much as I like the AP books/subscription, I don't have unlimited storage space and the shipping costs are becoming prohibitive.
The recent price hike on the AP shows how Paizo is being impacted by increased costs too.

So - here is my idea (which you guys may have had already):

What about a purely digital AP subscription, consisting of PDF, Realm Works files, and perhaps Herolab portfolios?

Now I know Paizo has a good relationship with Lone Wolf Development and I see this as a real growth area.
Plus it would save me a TON of time using copy-paste and messing around with images/maps etc.

I mean - I would be prepared to pay the same the same price for this service - You guys wouldn't have physical production costs, and I wouldn't have to pay shipping! Win-Win!

Thoughts?
