Jack does a happy dance as the last of the worms are destroyed. He pulls out 3 slightly crushed strawberry tarts and hands one each to his friends before consuming one himself.

"So I guess the worms are the thing that we're supposed to put into the container and take back to Mister Cranky."

The diseased miner gropes blindly for your face, staggering through the puddle of vermin with a vile, squishing sound. Slowly, the other three miners shuffle towards the light, sightless eyes staring at nothing.

Following the rails (and, incidentally, the metallic ringing sound), the tunnel slopes gently down into the dark. Several adjacent tunnels branch off this main throughfare, winding elsewhere through the mineral-rich earth. After ten minutes of wary advancement, your lanterns shine upon a group of silent figures, clustered aimlessly at the end of the tunnel. They are attired similarly to most of the miners you have seen around Diamond Lake since your arrival. One of these men intermittently raises his pickaxe and bangs it against the seam of glittering metal, shining in the dark.

(They haven't noticed you yet, but that's not going to last long. Jack indicated he was taking some care to be quiet. Arial did not, but I assume that she is not making too much noise. For Jack helping his brother bake brings back happy memories of growing up in the bakery. Once the prep work is finished, Jack puts the pies into the oven to bake then changes into his adventuring clothes and grabs his backpack, rapier and buckler. Jack is startled out of his shocked contemplation I didn't want to kill him of the man he just wounded so badly by Alison's scream. Moving as quickly as his large size allows he follows Azander and Arial out the door.

Seeing his friend in danger, Jack bares his teeth and rushes to her aid only to see Arial draw and fire her bow almost faster than Jack can follow as Azander chops into Kullen's arm with dramatic and stunning effect.

Assuming that Kullen has been dispatched by the onslaught

Jack grabs Alison and gives her an awkward hug (as much as one can hug with a rapier in one hand and a buckler in the other). Jack whispers in Alison's ear, "run to the bakery as fast as you can, don't stop to talk to anyone, tell my brother what happened and have him hide you."

After whispering to Alison, Jack takes a position to cover Arial and Azander in case reinforcements show up.

I am going to post your Wild Attack query on the Pinnacle forum. I've always read it as the effect lasting until your next turn, but I can see your point and will clarify the issue.

INITIATIVE (Round 3)
Arial: King (Diamonds)
Azander: 10 (Clubs)
Jack: 6 (Spades)
Kullen: 6 (Clubs)
Kullen's Gang: 5 (Diamonds)

Presently, Jack is fighting two thugs by the pit, one of them is shaken. Arial is still fighting the guy with the broken bottle (note to self: improvised weapon) and Azander is driving Kullen (also shaken) back towards the bar.

Thanks for checking...if the rule is written as stands it becomes a great strategy. Wild Attack followed by Taunt. You get to inflict +2 damage and have no penalty to either Attack roll or Parry. You're Taunt would be at -2 but there's no downside if you lose and an upside if you win. Jack could turn into the fighting, taunting fat man.

Going by the other thug that should be a raise.

Damage: 1d4 + 1d6 + 2 + 1d6 ⇒ (1) + (2) + 2 + (1) = 6 Almost literally the lowest damage possible

I'm a bit confused by the language of Wild Attack - Performing a wild attack adds +2 to the character’s Fighting attack and resulting damage roll, but his Parry is reduced by 2 until his next action. This sounds like if Jack takes another action this turn his Parry penalty goes away. Is that right?

As she follows the ramshackle balcony to the door they came through she is amazed that the structure was still standing. Had Diamond Lake fallen so far since she'd lived here, or was it simply that her life here had been sheltered?

As she approached the door, she saw the other half-orc, big and brutish, but not as savage as the albino, though his face was decorated with what looked like something gruesome at first glance, but turned out to be pastry. She found herself smiling as the rotund man with the pastry eating half-orc turned and she recognized....

"Jack!" she said, and a moment later his arms had wrapped around her, lifting her off her feet until she laughed and playfully thumped his shoulders. "Put me down!!!"

"You've grown as full as Sehanine's moon," she grinned, returning his hug. She looked to the be-pastried half-orc and then back to Jack, and her smile widened as she remembered sweet, hot, flakey pies that even the elf bakers of Celene couldn't match. She looked at his cloak for tell tale dusting of sugar or flour. "You're still at the family bakery, aren't you?"

"This is Alison's room?" she said, and her head whipped around, but the thugs were out of sight. She took a deep breath and her face grew deadly serious. "It is well that I came quickly, then." As quickly as her teacher could get her to leave. In truth, she had been somewhat uncertain about returning to Diamond Lake.

She tapped gently on the door. "Alison?" she said. "There are old friends here to see you."

"And to answer your question fair Arial, I am no longer at the shop but my brother continues the business still. I should warn you that he's gained a bit of weight since last you saw him. He's not been able to keep it under control like I have," Jack finishes with a wink.

"Of course we will help," Arial says, without giving the matter a moment's thought. Without consulting Jack, either. She sits beside Alison, putting a hand on the poor woman's shoulder. "Even if we weren't friends, you've suffered enough losses already. It's clear that this man Balabar Smenk is corrupt and manipulating events to take advantage of your misfortune. Sehanine knows who is worthy."

"Yes, yes, we'll help. You may not know this about me but i've become a bit of an adventurer after I left The Lake. I can weld this rapier to good effect against these scoundrels if necessary."

Jack wrings his hands together for a moment clearly struggling with a decision..."Come, gather your things, I will take you to my brother' shop. He's a good-hearted man and will give you a safe place to stay until Arial and I sort this." He will that is unless he shrew of wife puts a stop to it...she's not going to be happy to have a beautiful young woman come into her world.

Jack, is the Greyfeather Bakery still trading in Diamond Lake? Do you have family members living locally and working there? Will leave this decision up to you.

I'd like to say it's still in business. It is now run by Jack's older brother and his wife. (Jack doesn't own any part of the business.)Amazingly, they are both fatter than Jack. Jack loves his brother but can't conceive of a life led in Diamond Lake and not exploring the wider world. There is no love lost though between Jack and his sister-in-law who has a shrewish personality and an acid tongue. Her great pleasure in life is spreading gossip about the townsfolk.

Jack turns to watch the thugs leave. He squeezes his bulk away from them the best he can. He absent-mindingly reaches for another tart before realizing with disappointment that he had traded them away.

As he stands there trying to process what he's just seen and heard his attention is attracted by a beautiful Elven maiden who has joined them outside the door. He stares at her for a long second then breaks into a huge smile pulling her into a hug as he exclaims, "Arial! It's me...Jack Greyfeather...it's been years...by the gods you haven't changed a bit!!! Are you here to see Alison. Look I got a letter from her asking me to come. Oh it is good to see you."

Jack releases Arial from his hug and steps back a bit. He drops his voice to a whisper, "Did you see those nasty thugs. They were just in Alison's room threatening her. I was about to go to her aid when they left. Should we go in together and find out what's going on?"

Jack walks up to the brute. "Hello there, beautiful in the old home town isn't it? You look familiar, you didn't attend lessons with me did you?" Jack adds as he holds out his hand a bit put off if the brute did not offer a handshake in return. Either way Jack continues, "Wonder if you could help me? Looking for a friend of mine that's staying in your establishment. Name is Alison Hand, appreciate directions and all that my good sir."

Jack pauses to see if the brute responds favorably. If not, he says, "Of course, hate to be a bother. How's bout a trade. I have a bag of 10 tarts, well actually 6 now, traveling being hungry work that I will give you to show me where Alison is in Jolek's. These our excellent tarts, made them myself. Family used to be the bakers in town. Greyfeather Bakery ring a bell?"

Jack nods at the miners as they walk by. He recognizes a few here or there from growing up in town but most look like strangers. This town looks no better than it did when I left, he thinks as he absentmindedly pulls a strawberry tart out of his bag and eats it without even noticing the taste or the strawberry jelly smeared around his mouth. I wish I had stayed away but it seems like Alison is in trouble and I always look after my friends. With that thought, Jack makes his towards the waterfront and his old friend.
