Same. I'm one of those guys at the table who builds to a character and concept, optimization (and survivability) be damned. And then inquire about the friendly NPC's breakfast and love life.

"I know the world is ending, but... I haven't seen this romantic sub-plot through!"

"There won't be one if the bad guy wins, dammit!"

I humbly submit a concept I cooked up for this campaign a long time ago. Jack, aka "The Dreamweaver", a former drug peddler turned wannabe vigilante after being bit by a dream spider and convinced his fever dream was a vision from Desna.

ALSO! I had a question about pre-game crafting. Specifically, are you allowing it? It doesn't change the concept, only effects how many alchemical items he's got available at the beginning. (Mostly spider sacs.) Once I know, I'll hammer out his equipment better.

"Looks like you got yourself in a sticky situation! ...sorry, I'm getting better at that. Honest."

Backstory:
Cheliax is hard enough to grow up in with parents watching your back. It's even harder as an orphan. Growing up in Wheatflat Orphanage in Kintargo, Jack has only known two parental figures in his life: "Grammy" the kindly, if tired, older woman who runs the place, and the harsh streets of the city. His faux grandmother taught him that the people who truly love you are those who don't abandon you, even when you have nothing. The streets taught him that if you want anything, you need to snatch it when nobody's looking, and put up your dukes when someone is. It's not hard to see why Jack started working in the drug trade when he demonstrated an aptitude for mixing chemicals. Shiver in particular was a hot commodity, and even if the money he made from producing the tincture was going to a good cause (funding his orphanage family), it probably did not help those who were addicted to the stuff he made.

But that all changed after one fateful accident in his little lab. Working on harvesting some venom from Webdoline, his dream spider supply pet, she bit him on the hand, sending him into shock and knocking him out. During his trip, he glimpsed a vision of what he believed to be Kintargo, black shadowy tentacles pulling it apart at the seams and threatening to destroy the city. But a dream spider, bearing the holy symbol of Desna on its back, scuttling in and began weaving webs, tying the city back together. In fact, the reconstructed city not only looked as good as new, but better! Brighter! And the dream spider turned on the shadow tendrils and began chasing them back into the darkness and protecting the city!

Jack woke up to find himself back in his workshop. Back in Kintargo... but it had somehow lost all its prior appeal. It couldn't even compare to the splendor he saw in his dream. Jack believed that the accident had given him a vision - a mission from Desna herself! Darkness was coming to Kintargo, and without help, it would pull the city apart and leave everyone destitute! But there was hope - he could divert things, somehow. Kintargo needed a new hero, now that the likes of Jackdaw and the Silver Ravens were gone. It needed a new champion who could pull the broken fragments of Kintargo back together, and beat back the coming danger! Jack set to work destroying his shiver production and began working on new uses for the spider silk from his pet. Along with it, he started to create a new costume... and a persona to go with it! A champion of Desna, who would bring about the Kintargo he'd seen in his dreams! He might be a ruddy Chelish orphan, and certainly not the champion the city might need... but he had to try, at least until the real deal showed up! Until then, he's stand strong, clad in the bright blues and yellows of the dream spiders he worked with. He would champion the weak and downtrodden of Kintargo, and make the dream he saw a reality.

Jack became "The Dreamweaver"!

Personality:
Jack knows Kintargo needs a new hero that her people can rally around, and he's quite confident that the Dreamweaver will do the job. The big problem underlying it is... well, Jack himself. He doesn't think too highly of himself, having never been adopted, and being a former drug dealer makes him worry if he really has the chops to tackle the job he's given himself. Nevertheless, he is ready to step up to the plate and try his best, willing to give it his all so that folks like his charges in the Wheatflat Orphanage and the drug addicts he's strung out have a second chance at a much better life. Politics have never been something Jack was heavily invested in, but the martial law instated by House Thrune worries Jack, believing it to be one of the shadowy tendrils he saw threatening to tear Kintargo apart. He makes it a point to try and keep up with current events so that he can find the proper chance to unveil "The Dreamweaver" to Kintargo. (Indeed, half the reason he is going to the protest in Aria Park is to see if, maybe, it might be a good time to show the city her new champion).

Jack has never been one for worship or religion, but his brush with a fever dream has put him squarely in Desna's corner. For worshipers of the goddess, Jack is a very... pale member of the faith. He isn't entirely sure how he's supposed to pay service to her, and he lacks a lot of funds or anything that isn't unseemly to devote to her cause. Still, he's all on board with protecting her flock, and indeed, it's the only way he knows to contribute to her faith. Whether his fever dream was a vision from Desna herself or not, Jack believes it so, and if it helps her priests, so be it.

His quip-hurling alter ego and former criminal enterprise aside, Jack is shockingly brilliant and alert for someone with no formal education to speak of. He has a love of engineering and alchemy to rival even some professionals in the field, and indeed, much of the tricks he carries with him, including his "spider launchers" (a wrist mounted sheath with spider sacs), were crafted by him. If there is one area that Jack is confident and excels in, it's alchemy, even if his experience comes from peddling shiver. Even as he is constantly working on developing new ways to carry of his duty at The Dreamweaver, Jack is consistently diving ways to make his new persona come to life, including magical means.

Whew... guess even the site needs a vacation. That was looooooong. @_@

Also... is it stupid that I actually put in that AngryRatFixingGun.com addy and went to see what it was?

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Despite his size, Jack remains upright in front of Kreed, looking up at him nonplussed. "Agreed." A very light smirk tugged at the corner of his mouth as he added, "In the meantime, Mr. Kreed, do take care. And Master Harg! May the better man win!" On that note, he sounds genuine, leaning around and nodding respectfully to the Gavel's nomination.

Turning on heel, he nodded to Rrruh and Krogge, bidding them to follow him before addressing the crowd once more. "And of course, if any of you good folk have questions, I shall be addressing them at Master Napes. I suppose it would be wise to grow accustomed to answering concerns, as that looks to be my job in the nigh future."

On that note, he started back for the tavern, mind already calculating the myriad of things he would need to do to not only win this election, but to keep Kreed from sabotaging it.

Jack stood for a bit, both hands on his cane, before sighing and tilting his head and popping his neck light.

Kreed just woke the sleeping giant.

"Where shall I begin..? I suppose with the hands. I was unaware you needed rough hands to work with papers. Since we're comparing, perhaps we should have Mr. Harg present his hands and see how coarse they are?"

"Secondly, under The People's Dictatorial, article 3, section 2, subsection A, and I quote, 'No citizen shall be bared from entry into governmental office based upon his monetary standing, ethnicity, gender, nor similar uncontrollable personal circumstances.' The fact I am not from Falcon's Hollow does not disqualify me from applying for the position of its mayor. Also under the same law, you are not granted the power to personally elect a member of the town to its position. Such is the right of the People."

"Thirdly, your governance of the town leaves me questioning your capability to do so. In the brief time I have spent here, I have already had to quell a riot - caused by your employees, by the by - and locate capable hands to help remove a threat to Consortium employees that you failed to address. If there is any doubt about my interest in the people of this town, let my actions renounce those suspicions. Meanwhile, YOU, Mr. Kreed, have failed to prevent the activities of a single law-snubbing troublemaker who calls himself the Blue Corvus about town. Incompetence that, you can be sure, I will be filing in my report to the People's Council."

"Lastly, Mr. Kreed, much as I find it humorous, Andoran operates on a free electoral process. One man, one voice. If you believe Mr. Harg a more capable hand than I at holding a mayoral position, then let the people of Falcon's Hollow make that decision. And... might I say, with these scandalous whispers of personal corruption swirling about you, I would strongly advise that, to save face, you avoid thrusting yourself into the center stage like this." He narrows his gaze on Kreed at that last bit - it was less a suggestion, and more of a veiled warning.

Stamping his cane into the ground, Jack looked about at the assembled crowd of citizens and nodded. "Any further questions are most assuredly welcome. My chief interest is ensuring the prosperity of the town. Were it not, I most certainly would not be looking to attain this position." Jack turned back to Kreed, looking at obliviously defiant as possible. It was time the town got someone who wasn't under Kreed's thumb in charge... best to make it look like he wasn't afraid.

***Still at the Sitting Duck***

Satisfied, and perhaps feeling a tad sorry for the tavern owner, before the Blue Corvus leaves, he pauses at the counter and drops a small pouch with about 15 gold coins inside. "If what you say is true, put that to good use... and know that the night wind is always listening..."

On that note, he leaves just as quickly as he arrived, disappearing quietly into the alleys between buildings, heading back to Jak-o-Napes to get out of his costume.

***Night Time***

"At last! The elusive Mr. Kreed!"

Jack's voice pipes up from the back of the crowd, before slipping forward to approach the Gavel, stopping a safe number of yards short and planting his cane into the ground. "I must say, you are harder to find than a bottle of Taldan Bliss in this town. Jack Callahan, First Son of House Callahan, and Financial Representative of The People's Council. And I must say, I agree wholeheartedly with your assessment! Not only for the safety of the Vale's citizens, but to help put a bit of organizational backbone into the Consortium's operations in this region because, quite bluntly, I would bill this as high comedy back in the capital."

He stamped his cane into the ground, glancing down at Vamros before turning his attention back to Kreed. "But I fear I must challenge your claim on Mr. Harg's behalf. Not that I doubt his talents, I would not be so bold! But there is indeed another in town who could absolutely negotiate the law as capably as Mr. Harg." he brushed his sleeves, before smiling and placing both hands on his cane.

"Myself. I believe I am all too capable of carrying out the job as mayor of Falcon's Hollow."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack smirked as Sweet Pea flew up to find him, leaning against the decorative top of the building across the way. He didn't make too much of an effort to hide should she find him, but instead put a finger up to his mouth and made a "Shhhh" motion for her to keep his presence quiet. Once the coast was clear, Jack clambered down the side of the building to approach the Sitting Duck. "(You go get that reward he promised... I'm gonna keep an eye on things in the back. Don't let 'em know I'm here, alright?)"

Waiting for the others to head inside, Jack put his cowl and cloak up a bit more, before heading after and taking a seat a couple tables away from wherever the group sits down, keeping his head low as he listened in.

Seriously... I'm really sorry to hear all of that, but I know what it's like for RL to just throw EVERYTHING at you at once. (Unexpected death included...)

Don't worry about this, that sh*t is WAY more important! Stay strong and don't let it break you down!

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack relaxed a little bit as the Iomedean congregation seemed to be dispersing. Looks like the old mediator wasn't needed after all!

That was, until Krogge mentioned the mayoral election! That might be a problem. The sheriff wanted to keep things under wraps to avoid any voter influence. They needed a quick distraction.

This might be a job for the Blue Corvus!

"Hahahahaha! Fair justice? Justice walks the streets of the Hollow by night now!" Jack called up from his perch on the roof across the way, though he tried to stay hidden while doing so. Perhaps a little voice throwing would confuse folks enough! "To anyone who calls Kreed their boss, listen up: your days of frightening the good people of the Hollow are over! Now it's your turn to fear the night! I am the spirit of liberty! I am the confidante of the night wind! And I am the eyes that see your evil from the darkest corners of your so-called 'safe havens'! I am the Blue Corvus! And the night belongs to me now!"

They just put a bat up to a megaphone and let it screech into it. Odds are, everyone will hear that signal...

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack got a good vantage point from the building across the way, ducking down and keeping a good eye on things. For now, Rrruh seemed to be taking the tension down a peg... for the moment. He was pretty good at this!

But he wasn't keen on taking on a group of the Inheritor's faithful... left a bad taste in his mouth. If things got out of hand... he might could make a move inside and grab hold of the guy they were looking for. Perhaps a change of scenery would change their moods. "Jack" would certainly make for a good shield... they might be less willing to through some rocks if an innocent was in the way.

For now, it was best to watch and keep ready.

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

"Yes, yes, you lot go and speak with Mr. Tock about the wyrm. I still need to find a capable taxydermist to stuff that, have it mounted... Oh! Perhaps a good campaign symbol, yes! Yes, 'Hollow is safer with Callahan in charge!' Yes, yes..." Jack said, muttering upstairs as he returned to his room... it wasn't actually a terrible idea, but if the others were going to visit Egrin Tock, it might be a good idea to have a little birdie follow them...

Quickly changing into his Corvus attire, Jack quietly crept to the window, opened it, and clambered outside, looking to stick to the rooftops... but not be seen TOO much. Perhaps, if the people got a glimpse of a blue bird man, it might help lend a bit of hope to the poor citizens. For now, he stuck to the rooftops, aiming to keep out of sight.

"Because that leads to the feared so-called tyranny you common folk rail against at the slightest behest. 'He who controls how the law is enforced controls the people.' Besides, our dear sheriff is clearly more suited to settling quarrels that require tight belts and clenched fists." Jack said, straightening his papers with a few taps before setting them down in his pack. "It would seem the unscuffed, unsullied son of a former noble house is looking more and more appealing, wouldn't you say?"

He took a bite of bread before dabbing his mouth and continuing. "Let us be frank: you have next to no capable candidates for this election, and from the sound of it, the few souls you do have seem fraught with possible corruption, or so the allegation goes. I would say incompetence is the bigger culprit, but I shall humor the notion." He took another bite before placing a hand on his chest. "Now, you have myself: I have the experience of leadership, the funds, and at my last count, I am the only one in this 'shanty town' who works directly for the People's Council. As treasurer, no less! And, need I point out (which clearly, I must) that I stand to do nothing, but gain from some political clout in town. It would behoove me to maintain some semblance of order and stability over the affairs of this town, and as I am here to offer further work to the good people of the Hollow, it seems most logical that I head political affairs. And perhaps, with such a title, our dear Mr. Kreed will finally find some time in his schedule to speak with me about the Council's wishes. And as if I could not already be everything you seek, I am in no way impressed nor moved by Mr. Kreed's plights in these affairs. The law is the law, and if he wishes to run against me, I welcome him to come out of hiding and face me in the forums. I heartily look forward to shredding his lack of efficiency before the entire populace."

Jack nodded at the sheriff before returning to his meal. "That is, of course, if the good constable has a more fitting candidate in mind."

1 person marked this as a favorite.
Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack ponders that a bit. A mayoral election? To be honest... such a concept had completely eluded him! It was a lumber town, but still in Anodren territory... why was there no bureaucracy of any sort in place?

"I see... so this Kreed is NOT in fact an elected official on behalf of the government.... that puts a number of things into great perspective. Namely... the severe lack of organization on more levels than I care to mention." Jack leaned back and placed his utensils on his plate, before reaching down to his pack and pulling out a number of papers. "Yes, yes, in Almas, things are a great deal more civilized. Elections are commonplace and well respected, and efforts to sway or bribe the election are held in check by overly patriotic individuals and organizations who oversee that things proceed smoothly. Ah, the fervor that democractic ideals bring..."

Jack shuffled through his papers, tapping at a few and pursing his lips. "Yes indeed, Master Krogge... who indeed. I doubt you will find a capable candidate in this 'rough and tumble' district. You will need someone who is organized, disciplined, well spoken. Not to mention a good deal of experience with government, organizations of the like, has the funds to run a promotional campaign. And if this Kreed does so indeed hold the sway you claim he does and will do his best to influence such an election, you would need a candidate who has an unwavering resolution to his duty, remains intimidated by such blase threats, and offers protection against such thuggery, if such an event were to pass."

Jack huffed a bit, pulling out a pencil and marking something on one of his papers before continuing. "And that is to say nothing of the need for a proper city hall. Nor the need for absolute idiot proof methods of deciding and announcing the election." Jack placed his papers down and folded his fingers together.

"In short, you wish to run a mayoral election with neither the candidate, nor the means. So... I accept the offer."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack spends the night resting from his exercise from the day. He needed a bit of rest... and a good thing too, because in the morning, the sheriff himself came in for a visit.

Sitting down at his table, Jack was enjoying his breakfast when the half-elf arrived. Pausing in his meal, he feigned a look of disinterest... but was genuinely concerned. If this rough and tumble sheriff was worried, so was he. "And what matter could be so important as to disrupt such a lovely breakfast, my dear constable? As you can see, my associates - well, some at least - have their own troubles to address. This must be of the utmost urgency."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Sorry everyone. Parents are out of town and we're doing a bit of house sitting! Should be back on point now! Honest!

Jak listened, but the mention of the Blue Corvus made his eyes narrow... even if, on the inside, he was a bit pleased with himself. "(You mean the Blue Corvus?! That feathered delinquent really is in town!? ...and you didn't apprehend him!?)" he hissed back, acting really mad about the affair. "(And yes, I know him. He is a criminal, a vigilante, and his actions bring about chaos and lawlessness! The next time you see him, you report him to the local authorities!)"

The mention of Sauerton Red gets Jack back in a more casual prickly mood rather than an angry prickly mood. "I have had the distinct luxury of never having to square off with the drink myself... though its reputation is disgustingly legendary. In Almas, they bandy around the phrase 'down from Sauerton' to describe anything that lacks quality. I don't - I have a much more robust vocabulary than to use quaint folksy mannerisms to describe things."

Jack looked at the Bellis Mead for a moment, before tapping the table and thinking. "Bah... curse my inefficiency today! Had I a proper office to keep things organized, I could get started on a list of volunteers. Now that we have the location of the resource, I need to begin getting a list of available workers together to start harvesting said resource... I'd even be willing to spare some of that Bellis Mead for anyone willing to sign up. But as it stands... I have nowhere to maintain these records..."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack looks a bit more disheveled than the last time the group saw him, and certainly has a bit of perspiration about his brow. But he is also sorting through papers and looking a little annoyed, so perhaps it's just stress.

Sense Motive: 1d20 ⇒ 20
...I don't even know...

He looks up as the others enter, eyes lingering on Krogge and his wink before listening to his story. A part of him wondered if Krogge actually had guessed what he was up to and knew his secret... or at least suspected a connection. If he did... color him impressed!

"Well... at least ONE thing was accomplished today!" Jack replied, leaning back in his seat and looking moderately miffed. "After my... excursion today, I can provide the People's Council irrefutable proof that the gods exist. Because the fact this - and I hesitate to use this word - 'organization' continues to operate with any semblance of profit is nothing short of a miracle! I have been this way and that to every officer of any caliber in this town today, and have absolutely NOTHING to show for it! SO... I am glad to hear that at least one of our endeavors did not result in a wild goose chase. Rest assured, the People's Council will be informed of this absolutely shoddy handling of documentation and chain of command in my letter to them."

Jack seemingly returned to his papers as he bid the rest of the group sit. "So then... since you were out and about, did you happen to locate any sites of promising resources? Or perhaps, in your visits to the lumberyard, you've managed to procure any useful mutterings of the workers?"

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Okay, sorry everyone! This weekend got a bit busy and it spilled over into the week, but I should be back in regular action!

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack smirked, shaking his head and Sweet Pea's question, and smiling at Krogge's answer. "Right he is. It's one thing to defend yourself. It's another to attack someone because you want their stuff. That's what Kreed does... though he tries to do it without anyone noticing."

Jack nodded towards Randu. "Aren't they always? If you do investigate the place... try to bring Jack, if you can. Tell him they have a... oh, a 'robust collection of cultural works on display'. He loves that stuff. And he makes for a good distraction... and don't worry, he can't handle himself. That cane he carries?" He smirked a bit, folding his arms. "Would you believe he's got a sword in there? He's not quite as defenseless as he looks."

"But when you guys get back to town, my first suggestion is to check in with Egrin Tock. You know he's the one who helped set this up." He paused, closing his eyes and thinking a bit. "You know... might make for a good base of operations... assuming you could get your hands on some documentation... a good step towards getting Kreed's yolk off the town, if you could push Tock out of it."

"By the by, keep this source of Darkwood to yourself. If Kreed finds out about this place... how'd Ben put it? No honest cutter's gonna see a single copper." He smiled again. "Jack, on the other hand... would have a field day with this."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

"Even better. Now get. I hear Almas is hiring honest dock workers." Corvus replied, folding his arms.

Once the fellow is on his way out of earshot, he smirked, looking back at Rrruh. "Oh, I want them to know I'm about. They just don't know where. I can vanish into thin air at the moment's notice, if need be. And besides, who has time to worry about a couple of big cats when they have a bigger bird to snare?"

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Kn. Local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

So... the Redrock Guild was in on this as well, huh? It figured... that meant Kreed was looking to put the kibosh on the group. But Flint brought up a good point... and Sweetpea put it simply.

"Sweetpea's got the right of it, a bit. You all are a threat. On your own, he might not care much, but now Jack's here, and that's throwing him a loop. He's got the resources, you all are willing to protect him. So congrats, you've got Kreed sweatin' a little bit. And it's probably gonna get a bit worse moving forward." He looked back at Krogge, smiling as his eyes started to glaze over a bit, as if toying with ideas in his mind. "Good to hear. I won't sugarcoat it, it's gonna be a bit of a challenge ahead... but you keep that fresh in your mind - who you're doing this for - and it'll take a whole lot more than Kreed can muster to break you."

He looked back down at the thug, before leaning over to pull him to his feet. "Listen up... I'm not gonna kill you. But I want you to do me a favor. I want you to tell all your friends about me... and to take a message to Kabran. Tell him he's next on my list. Tell him the night is no longer safe for the likes of you." He tugged the brute closer, smirking. "And when he asks you who sent this message, you let him know that it was the Blue Corvus. And if you cause any more trouble in this town again, I'll know. Now get... it's a looooong walk back with your hands tied."

Jack would be a little surprised - it'd be new territory - but he'd also be open to the idea. He'll have to move on in due time, so if he can leave someone to carry on a legacy of justice, he'd be up to the task!

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

The bird man smirked a bit and turned around, finally giving everyone a good chance to get a good look at him. His smile is genuine though, and he bows politely (if a little overly grandiose) to the group. "Sorry. Guess I should introduce myself. My friends, and I'd certainly say you all qualify as friends, call me Corv... but everyone else knows me as the Blue Corvus."

So THIS is the curious Blue Corvus!

He paused at Krogge's wink, apparently not totally sure how to process it, before smirking and shaking his head. "Speaking of Jacks, I'd like to appropriately thank you guys for watching out for mine back in town. No worries about him today. I've worked with Jack for a looooong time... not that he realizes that." His tone is one a parent might use when discussing a mischievous child. "I'm sure you've realized by now, but he's a bit of a handful. But he means well... the Council was planning on sending someone else. He may not act like he wants to be here - and he very well might not - but he insisted on being the one to come here. He's got a good heart under that stuffed shirt... somewhere..."

He chuckled and shook his head. "Listen, I know the introductions are kinda brief, but I've known about you guys for a while now. As they say... 'the night wind tells me everything.' Sweet Pea, Krogge, Rrruh, Randu, Flint." He paused between each name, pointing to each of them as he spoke. [/b]"So I'll skip to the part where I ask for your help. As you can no doubt tell, Falcon's Hollow is in a baaaaaaad spot right now. As capable as I might be, I can only do so much to help the town AND keep Jack out of trouble. Even if I stormed Kreed's gates tonight and cut him down, that'd leave a power vacuum for some other thug to fill, and a lot of folks out of work and in disarray. I think Jack's plan has a solid chance of working... but I can't help him execute it by myself."[/b]

He bowed his head a moment, holding his arms out in a prostrating manner. "I don't suppose I could ask for your help for an undetermined extended period of time, could I?"

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack pulled his blade back from the Tatzlwyrm's throat, watching it fall as his subtle combat high wore off steadily. Shaking the blood of his katar, he pulled out an old cloth and started to clean it better before nodding at the others with a winning smile.

"Whew! Looked a little shaky there for a minute! Good to see you on your feet again, Rrruh." he states, taking the time to pronounce Rrruh's name impeccably, before going to retrieve his thrown spring blade and sliding gears back into place on both the blades and his wrist sheath. "Haha! Looks like someone's gonna have them a nice discussion piece back in town! Speaking of discussing..."

Jack moves towards the orange thug, folding his arms. "How's about you and I have a chat? Bird to brute. Let's start with Ergin Tock."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Sorry folks! I was out of town this past week! Should be back in action and ready for adventure at a steady rate now!

So far, things were looking good! Just a little bit more... and Jack would have a new stuffed critter for his wall! Should make a nice talking piece!

Focus! Stepping deftly forward, Jack spun and struck at the creature with his fanned feathered katar, aiming to get a good slice at the creature's neck!

Tri-blade Katar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 191d4 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Sorry, gang. Family's out of town, leaves me with a few more responsibilities than I expected.

Jack steps aside as the last thug leaves, smirking as Flint rushed after him. He was content to let him go. Let him bring back the tale of the blue-clad champion of Falcon's Hollow. The more, the better.

Meanwhile, his attention focused back on the wyrm, flipping his blade and catching it it again, rearing back. Sorry, buddy! You've caused one too many problems. Besides, I hear some rich nut wants you stuffed and mounted!

He flung his dagger at the beast, aiming to knock it right in the head before waving his free hand... and drawing another weapon! Springing from his wrist, a single dagger shaped like a metallic feather appeared in his grasp, before it suddenly split into three feathers, ready for action! "Krogge! Mind the breath and get on the other side! Let's finish this brute and bring him back to town!"

Standard action to throw the spring blade like a dagger at the wyrm, swift action to draw my tri-blade katar.

Awwww, congrats! Enjoy!

"Rrruh!"

Wait... how does this guy know Rrruh's name?!

No more time for games. Time to get serious! Calling out commands in a collected and confident, Jack quickly assessed the situation and started formulating a plan. "Sweet Pea! See if you can't pull Rrruh to safety! Randu, start patching him up! Pharasma isn't ready to judge him just yet!"

Moving swiftly up behind the orange thug, Jack's blade gleamed in the light before making a slash for the bruiser. "Krogge! Try to keep your calm! And your distance from the wyrm! If it hits you with that bad breath, it'll be bad news!"

Spring Blade: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 3 + 2 = 111d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 Flanking with the tatzlwyrm

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

When my turns comes around again!

Another laugh echoes around the forested area, before a tall, blue figure emerges from around the grove. Dressed from head to toe in navy blue garb, a small cape drapes off his shoulders and down to his waist. His face is hidden partly by the beaked cowl, with a black mask covering his eyes... but not the confident smirk on his face! Most prominently of all is the pitch black eagle symbol on his chest, worn proudly by most members of the Eagle Knights, save for the lack of gold.

"Last chance to run! Unless you're brave enough to stick it out and square off with someone even worse than this big guy!" As he speaks, he flicks his hand, and a slender blade clicks into place, ready to defend its owner.

Move action to new place on the map, swift action to draw the spring blade, readying a standard action to use a smoke pellet on my square if anyone attacks.

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Seeing that his ploy worked, Jack decided to capitalize on the distraction and work to flank the group... which meant a lot of running! Taking off in a sprint, Jack began to circle around the brush, keeping his smoke pellet and spring blade at hand.

"Like my friend!? He's been eager to meet the lot of you! If any of you wants to run, now would be the time! And when you run back to your master Kreel, tell him that Falcon's Hollow is not his anymore! Justice has come to town, and I am her travelling companion!"

Run action to re-position myself on the map.

Seems they weren't entirely lying about the tatzlwyrm... it certainly seemed awake and ready to find whatever it was Rrruh threw at it. Pondering the creature and their predicament, Jack reached into his pouch and pulled out of his personal favorite tools: a smoke pellet.

Maybe, if they were lucky, they could keep their distance... or, even better, they could use the brute to their advantage! But how...? Moving a bit further to try and put the snake-like dragon between him and them, Jack started to laugh audibly, trying to use the trees to echo and disguise his location. If he could lure them closer to the tree...

"Hahahahahaha! What's wrong, fellas? Having trouble finding one simple bird?!" he called out, trying to throw his voice so that it came from the tree. "I know why you're here! After the fine folks stepping up to help the Hollow, am I right? I know all about the deal with Egrin Tock! Pretty clever... so tell me, was it really a tatzlwyrm who gave poor Ben those grievous wounds... or did you lot contribute to his condition? Come on, a bit closer! Right here in the big tree, fellas!"

Jack, for his part, has been following along, staying as far back as he possibly can, trying to keep his cloak over him so that his blue wouldn't give him away among the trees. Something in the pit of his stomach made him suspicious of the whole scenario, but he had planned to follow along anyways.

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5

Stepping on a twig, Jack winced, before ducking behind a tree to stay out of sight, hoping they didn't notice him. He decided perhaps, just in case, he should be ready for combat... perhaps they'd found a tatzlwyrm after all! He decided to keep his switch knife at the ready... but the blade withdrawn.

Krogge seemed like a wild card... might be a good idea to be as non-threatening as possible.

"Indeed. With enough darkwood to clear the debts of every man and woman in the Hollow, as Ben says." "Kal" stated, keeping his hood low. "Wish I could go with you, but I have other things to attend to. Be careful. Of more than just the tatzlwyrms."

Bluff: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22

Sense Motive DC 22:
"Kal" is lying about not being able to come along.

"Kal" turned and started to leave out the door, before stopping. "...if you guys ever need help, tell Jack you have a message for the night wind. He'll know what to do." And on that cryptic note, he heads out the door and out of sight.

...wait... as in, "Fancy" Jack?

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

As Laurel helps Sweet Pea get medicines together, "Kal" stays quiet and out of the way, letting the medicine women talk before Sweet Pea rushes off. Turning back, "Kal" did his best to keep his hood over his face as he reached up and pushed a small bag across the counter towards her. "Thanks. Ben really needs it... and we really need him. I heard you were a big help yesterday after a 'friend' of mine calmed things down. Take these. A little something to say thanks for your hard work... we might need you help again in the future."

Before Laurel can open it, "Kal" is already out the door and heading swiftly back for the camp. Inside the pouch, Laurel will find 10 gold coins, along with a short note.

If you ever need help, tell Jack you have a message for the night wind.

"Three miles up the dwarf road... mile and a half into the woods... it's okay, Ben. Rest easy. They won't get it. You just get better." "Kal" turned and stood up, walking with his head a little lower. Partly to hide his identity, and partly because he was contemplating what he said. Darkwood to wipe a man's debt. And "they" must be the Consortium... but he cut off before he could mention the tatzlwyrm.

"Agreed, let's go." "Kal" confirmed, heading along after Krogge. But in the back of his mind, a part of him began to question something. Tatzlwyrm's make their homes deep in the forest. But a part of him began to wonder if it really was a tazlwyrm that got to Ben...

I like to tie the two together, if I can help it.

Jack followed along behind the group, keeping his cloak and cowl up to mask the true disguise underneath... that of the Blue Corvus. He could hear Randu explaining the situation about tatzlwyrms, keeping mental notes as he walked closely along.

When they got to the logging camp, Jack could hear the poor logger's cries and moans of pain from outside the place, and after the group entered, he peered in through the doorway at the poor sod. He was beat up and clearly delirious... and from the sound of Krogge and Rrruh's assessment, he'd be dead before they could get anything useful out of him!

No... no, he couldn't let that happen! Perhaps Jack could muster the will to let the poor man writhe in peace, but not the Blue Corvus! His gut told him this man could be saved! Of course... he didn't want to reveal himself so early... and that was when he got an idea! Straightening up and stepping inside, Jack immediately started to push his way through the group towards Ben's bedside. "'scuse me! Please! I gotta see Ben!" Kneeling down, Jack clasped Ben's closest hand in his and adjusted his voice ever so slightly. "Ben! Hey, Ben... it's me, remember? Erm... Kal! Remember me? Kal? Ben, look, I know you're hurtin', but you've got to hang in there. C'mon, think... think of the kids! At home, remember? How do you think they're gonna feel if ol' Ben let's a silly injury like this get the better of him? Ben, please... Ben, you've gotta tell me what happened so we can help you. C'mon, I know you're tougher than this..." With any luck, Ben, in his delirium, would recognize his "old friend" and hang in long enough to either get some help or tell them what they needed. Preferably both.

Twisting his head slightly, he pointed at Randu and Sweet Pea, trying not to let his face show under the cowl. "You two! I saw you helping Ms. Laurel yesterday! Please, you've got to do something for him, anything to keep him breathing... oh! You're, uh... Krogge, right? Krog, please, you gotta go get Laurel. She'll know what to do. Whatever he needs. We can pay it, just... you've gotta help him!"

We're gambling! I also realize I have absolutely no ranks in Disguise... how weird...

...is this actually going to work?

Sense Motive DC 26:
Whoever this "Kal" is is clearly lying his ass off. It's evident he's just making this all up on the spot.

Perception DC 18:
The fellow is doing his best to hide his face, for whatever reason. But when he turns just enough, you can spot what looks like a navy blue mask wrapping over his eyes and nose.

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack frowned a bit at Krogge's request to room with him. Not that he particularly minded the company, but the more folks he had in his room, the harder it would be to conduct "business". Still, he didn't want to kick Krogge out in the cold...

"...haaaaaaa... if I must. After you clean up, of course. And I shall be up early tomorrow. I like to get an early start and I have a great deal to observe with regards to getting government operations started. I suspect the best way to improve on the Council's methods is to see what is currently being done wrong by the Consortium, and cut the extra weight as needed. And hopefully finally get to speak with this Thuldrin Kreed."

************

Jumping ahead slightly for when morning comes along...

Before the sun can peak up over the trees, Jack has already woken himself up and collected his things. Ideally without waking anyone else in the inn, especially the owner. The fewer questions, the better. Donning his outfit and collecting a slightly oversized cloak, Jack will try to creep out the door and down to the front before waiting outside for the others, trying not to arouse any suspicion or noise...

Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12

"I would council waiting for the morning. Permit your key witness to recover a little while. But how you proceed, I leave to you. I shall be remaining here to go over details of my work and attend to minor matters. Do inform me of when you are leaving so that I know when I will be lacking hands." Jack replied, quietly contemplating how to best proceed himself. Perhaps, for the time being, he would keep his distance from the group... for a while, anyways.

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Something about this Egrin fellow seemed a little off...

Sense motive: 1d20 ⇒ 4

But for the life of him, Jack couldn't put his finger on what. Even so, the prospect of a tatzylwyrm on the loose was a nasty notion. But at the same time... an opportunity! What better way to introduce the Blue Corvus than as a legendary warrior who can kill an already feared and dangerous creature! If he could get the others to bring back not just its head, but "sightings" of the Blue Corvus... it would go a long way to getting his reputation spread!

"Tatzlwyrm, my brutish friend. Snake like reptilian beasts. And it would seem your operation has intruded on what the beast perceives as its territory. While I certainly agree that such a threat is poor for business practices ices, I fear I did not come with spare soldiers. And I cannot afford to let a man of my stature come under threat from such a monster." Jack cleared his throat before adjusting his papers. "However, this creature cannot be permitted to run unchecked. Krogge, Sweet Pea, Master Rrruh, there will be a substantially consequential bonus for services rendered if you can locate and eradicate this trivial pest. Double that if you can bring back it's head. I should like to have it stuffed and mounted. Should be a fine discussion piece..."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack considered his options and ultimately decided against a venture out just yet. Still too light... for now... he closed the window and continued his gearing up before putting on another set of noble's clothes and grabbing some documents, heading downstairs.

Finding a seat near the hearth, Jack laid out his papers and began to peruse them, entirely oblivious to the man sizing them up as he spoke. "Now then... as you are now, by legal definition, employees of the People's Council, however temporary, you should likely be aware of their interest in the town. Now, the Council is interested in-"

He paused abruptly as the well built man approached and seemed to insert himself into the conversation. Jack looked up at him as if waiting for him to announce himself, before sitting back in his chair and clearing his throat. "Yes, my good man? Is there something you need assistance with?"

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack had finally gotten his things settled into his personal room and took stock of everything. The bag he carried personally was the most important to him... opening it up, he unfurled his Blue Corvus outfit and held it up to inspect for wrinkles or damages.

'Wonder if I should introduce them to him yet...' he silently mused, before starting to unpack his other gear. At the very least, he could get privately suited up with his weaponry. 'Situation's worse than I thought... sounds like the Consortium has these folks ground into the dirt. I might have to step things up a bit and move forward sooner than I planned. But the others seem like nice guys... perhaps...'

Finished with strapping his spring sheath and katar on his wrist, Jack headed to the nearest window and looked outside, trying to gauge how plausible it would be to try sneaking out that way...

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack blinked as his fellow Jack, of the Napes variety, grasped his hands and shook them with more energy than he was expecting. Dropping his bag, Jack tolerated the shake a moment before freeing himself and quickly grabbing his pack again. Straightening himself up, Jack took in a deep breath and exhaled.

"Jack-o-Napes, yes? I'm told your establishment is the choice for long term accommodations. That is my purpose here - I am here at the behest of the People's Council and need a personal suite to retire to when my business becomes overwhelming... which I imagine will be a regular occurrence, if today is any indication." Jack collected himself further before turning back to the two catfolk behind him, as if assessing them for a moment. Finally, he turned back. "Indeed. Your finest fare, if you would, for my friend and his associate. And a place for my personal guard. Preferably close by to my own suite, if you would. And please ensure absolutely nobody disturbs me. I need total privacy. Ah, and if one of Mr. Kreed's representatives arrives looking for me, please alert me, I'll be down posthaste."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Following the sheriff's directions with his eyes, Jack nodded before turning to Rrruh and grabbing a few of his own bags. The lighter ones... though he immediately grasped one much faster and first before any others. "Yes, yes, much like everyone else in this town, he was intent on solving the situation like a savage than with the order of the law. But, I suppose he is technically yet to be on my payroll, so I cannot truly hold him to this duty either. I suppose the same could be said for yourself, Master Rrruh."

Following the sheriff's directions, Jack seemed intent on finding the tavern and getting himself situated. Almost leaving Rrruh behind in the process. For a guy so intent on getting his things moved in, he sure seemed to forget them quite a bit.

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

"Pleasant or not, it is my duty as a member of the Council. Though already I have enough details to fill an entire stationary's worth of materials back to the Council." Jack replied, before looking at his discarded bags and sighing. "In any case, I simply cannot stand around anymore and engage in idle chit chat. I believe a place called... 'Jack Of Napes' was my destination? Some decent lodgings and a place to stage work on the Council's Behalf. Since my guide has so callously misplaced my luggage and deserted my interests, perhaps you'd be so kind as to direct me to this 'Jack' so that I can get my affairs somewhat in order?"

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack placed his hands on his cane as he listened to the sheriff speak, before offering a quipping huff in reply. "I'll have you know, constable, that the Callahan family has been more than willing to abide by Andoran's new rules over the years, nonsensical as they may be. We are a respectable merchant family. However, I imagine the influence of the People's Council should carry more weight than my own... unfortunate as it may be. It is the Council that has an interest in Falcon's Hollow and the Lumber Consortium. I merely speak their interests. And you can be assured that I will have a number of grievances to file when I report my arrival to them! The state of this hamlet's infrastructure has left me thoroughly unimpressed! While the shipyards of Augustana are grateful beyond measure for the lumber to keep them busy, I highly doubt they would approve of this terrible lack of organization."

Despite his ramblings, Jack was quietly taking things in, and realized that with so many citizens here, now might be a good time to start some rumors... "Ah, constable, I do have one request of you while I have your attention." Jack stated, raising his volume a tad more to try and catch the attention of other citizens in the area. "We've received irritable reports that a trouble maker may be targeting this village in the very near future. Fellow calls himself the 'Blue Corvus', fancies himself a hero of Andoran. Normally, he would be beneath the Council's consideration, but the troublesome thing is that people seem to have latched onto his ridiculous tales.

'He is the grandson of Andoletta herself, and carries out her will in Andoran.'

'He can never be surprised, for the night wind tells him every secret he wishes to know.'

'He walked through a rain of arrows, and each one refused to touch him.'

All nonsense and drivel, if you ask me. I refuse to believe he even exists... a folk hero to rally patriotism, if you ask me. Regardless, the Council believes he is very real and has been seen in this area, and believes he will interfere with the lumber production. So, I must ask that if you happen to see this 'Blue Corvus', that you would apprehend him and take him into custody."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

Jack watched Sweet Pea introduce herself, taking note of her name before brushing dust off his vest and straightening himself up. "My sincerest apologies that you had to see that, Master Rrruh. I do not typically raise my voice in such a virulent manner, but when things begin to grow out of control, well... it is a noble's duty to seize the situation and halt it." He watched as Krogge seemed intent on investigating the shop... and Sweet Pea seemed to be making a new friend. At least things were tentatively stable for the moment.

"I do hope Mr. Teedum will be delivering my request to Mr. Kreed posthaste. I believe there are a number of issues regarding civil legal procedure here that must be addressed. And perhaps some staff rearrangements to be made." Jack looked at the line forming outside the herbal shop and quirked an eyebrow, before turning to the apparent sheriff and hailing him. "Constable? Constable... Baleson, yes? Seems to be an excessive need for medical treatments here. Where are the officiated professionals? I've had a look at the records for the Lumber Consortium, and a number of names are listed who have medical expertise."

'Of course, a number of those same names were also in the list of deceased employees, but not all of them...'

This situation was getting rightly out of hand! Jack looked up at the fey on the rooftops, who was clearly riling these people. Suspicious folk... with fey, it was expected, but this was utterly ridiculous! Look at her, she was clearly just as spooked of them as they were of her! And Krogge was not helping issues by acting like a raging bull! This had to stop, and it had to stop NOW!

"For the love of Shelyn and all her effortless masterpieces, I... want... SILEEEEEEEEEENCE!" Jack bellowed before stamping his cane with a THUD! into the ground before him.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

"The young lady is with me! I am here to survey the Vale for suitable sites for a government funded logging operation, and I require a knowledgeable inhabitant who is versed with the landscape. She is in my employ! Young lady, why don't you come down and introduce yourself while I sort this out!"

Jack turned and looked between the two growing sides in front of the herbalist shop. "And as for you two!" he pointed first to Sheriff Baleson. "Constable! If you would be so kind, please ask Miss... Laurel, correct?" He paused to look at Krogge for confirmation before continuing. "Please ask her to provide a sample - merely a sample - for this gentlemen's investigative purposes! I will readily compensate her finances for the loss. IF you would be so kind..."

Jack then whipped onto Pay Day and gave him a stern glower. "And you are Mr. Teedum, yes? Do not forget that your company operates with the border of Andoran, and there are proper channels and protocols to follow that DO NOT involve disturbing the peace or inciting a riot! AND, when you deliver this 'cure' to Mr. Kreed, IF you would be so kind as to inform him that I, Jackovrus Callahan, represent the People's Council and request an audience with him to discuss new legislation and government operations in the area, I would be MOST grateful!"

Once again adjusting his vest, Jack resumed his calmer demeanor and softer voice. "Now then... matter settled."

Male Human Unchained Rogue/1

'Yikes... not sure who's who in this situation, but it's a coiled spring ready to activate! Better try and defuse this before the whol street goes up in a roar.' Jack reached up to adjust his undershirt and vest before looking over at Rrruh and Krogge. "Master Rrruh, Master Krogge, do stay close... but I do believe that this requires a bit of civility."

Squeezing his way through the throngs, Jack approached the edge of the conflict cautiously and quietly, placing both hands on the head of his cane before clearing his throat. "Er-hrm! Gentlemen, please, return your weapons! There is no need to resolve things like savages! I have no doubt this has evolved from a simple mistake, and I'd be more than happy to mediate this disagreement over of a well-deserved glass of Bellis Mead! Let's provide a suitable public example and show these fine folks that there are civil ways to resolve a conflict!"

Jack pretended to browse the stalls and shops, raising his eyebrows at the questionable products, but inside, his heart ached. This was borderline squalor... these were supposed to be the best they had to offer! But more importantly, he was getting an idea of the layout of the town.

But his looking over the town was interrupted by the sight of a mob forming around what looked like an herbalist shop. "That's not business... when you work in the capital as long as I have, you recognize civil unrest very well. And that unrest is about to boil over into a riot..."

Without even pausing to think on the notion, Jack picked up his pace and approached the outliers of this growing group, singling out a few of the more passive folks and trying to get their attention. "Ladies, gentlemen! Seems to be a degree of social discord brewing here. What seems to be the cause?"
