I'm aware of that. But the alternative is using Magic Missiles and Arcane Bolts til I run out of spell energy - which isn't likely to kill him unless he has a glass jaw. So unless we can lure him down by pissing him off, I don't see a better option at the moment.

Hawk doesn't hesitate, weaving a spell even as he speaks, "Who brought you here, Imp? Name your master." He completes the spell and sends two bolts of energy lancing at the elusive creature. Then he releases a portion of the strange wooden object in his hand. From the length of wood he continues to hold, two lengths of wood linked by chain swing freely. He steps forward and tries to smear the runes of the magic circle with a foot.

Hawk's eyes rise toward the ceiling. Curiouser and curiouser... He stands, smiles towards his unseen 'host', and summons up his courtly manners - useful in all sorts of awkward situations, according to his mother. "Greetings to you! I'm Hawkren and I thank you for your kind welcome. We are here looking for the Chandler. We were - we thought - reliably informed that we could find him or her here. Or do we have the wrong home?"

Hawk nods agreeably to the archaeologist, casts a distrustful eye on the vats, and says quietly, "Even cast in the most positive light, I find this scene disconcerting... Maybe the Chandler was working on magical candles to defeat the plague - and was using blood magic to do it. That seems possible and would explain this circle surrounding the candle-rack. But then someone put a hard stop to that, didn't they?"

Hawk tsks silently at what appears to be a blood ritual of some sort. He examines the scene and tries to recall if he knows anything about such a circle.

Having already secured the candle in his pack, Hawk gives the pale man a curious look. He slings the pack over his shoulder, "Should we need it, the candle will be right here. Unless you can light a taper faster than anyone else, I see no advantage in you carrying it. Shall we press on?"

"We've got the residue of magic here along with an eldritch candle and a lockbox. I would speculate the candle was used to summon those creatures, possibly as a trap to guard the lockbox." He pauses briefly, "At least that might explain this scene somewhat."

Hawk closes in on the crate containing a magic aura. He examines the crate cautiously for an obvious open side while he analyzes the eldritch aura more thoroughly. "There's something interesting within this crate. I'd suggest we leave it alone until we've finished up down here." He regards the dark cellar with a skeptical eye.

Hawk lifts the bedding to show Lluvia the fine dagger resting there, before lowering the bedding again. He says quietly, "It isn't magical but it's well-crafted. Since we're here to find the chandler, I think it's best to leave it... especially with our prickly 'colleagues'." He rolls his eyes to emphasize his unstated point.

I'll give the door a once-over with Detect Magic (in case I missed it before) and signal Lluvia if something is amiss.

Hawkren draws an odd instrument from his belt - a set of capped wooden staves linked by chain. It looks like a collapsible ladder missing at least half the pegs necessary to make it useful. He gives Lluvia a curt nod indicating his readiness.

Hawk listens to the pale man's cavil and makes another dreary mental note about an ersatz colleague. Turning his attention to matters of more interest, the Varisian tosses an appreciative nod towards the Kayal woman's weapon of choice, "Nice work with that. Thanks." He would have used her name but - quickly scrolling through his memory - he was reasonably certain that none save he and Lluvia had bothered sharing their names. Interesting what passes for civility here. He cat-foots over to watch Lluvia at work, observing her methods with interest, hoping to improve his own skills.

Hawk glances at Lluvia and responds quietly, "Nah. It broke the furniture more than anything else." He picks up a portion of the shattered wax face, examining it with curiosity before tucking the piece in a pouch in the bandolier slung across his chest.

Mostly just curious about the manufacture of the creature and the level of caster it would take to create this guy, if I can determine that.

As an afterthought, Hawk mumbles a quick spell. A lightly glowing field surrounds him. He explains, "Just in case there are more surprises in this 'simple chandlery'."

With relief, Hawk deftly side-steps the mannequin's strike - especially once he witnesses the monster's blow turn a table into kindling. Weighing the few good options, the Varisian presses his attack. He snaps a series of kicks to the creature's chest curious to see how much damage the mannequin can take... even as he prepares to switch tactics.

Ah, I see. You chose it through the Fey Magic (2 RP) alt human trait, presumably with Stealth as well.


Whatever floats your boat, DAA. I've heard that Midnight Mirror has some challenging combats, so your CON penalty may get a significant workout. :)

FWIW, I glanced at your character sheet and noticed that it looks like you didn't include the AC Penalty for your armor on some skills. Also, unless I'm missing some twist, Pallys don't usually have Acrobatics as a class skill.

Just to clarify, that actually wasn't a threat. Quite the opposite.

What I was saying is Lluvia and I were likely to be considered by the authorities as accomplices to the break-in since we clearly weren't going to report you. And given the LE nature of Nidal and the Kuthonite love for torture... we were hanging our asses out there by not calling for the constables immediately and we couldn't expect mercy from the law for just being 'witnesses'. My guess is the Nidal rule would be 'guilty by association'. That's why I commented we were beyond 'discretion' and clearly 'complicit' with what you were doing.

The Varisian raises an amused eyebrow at the young Kayal woman. He says lightly, "Oh, I think we're past discretion at this point. I'm not familiar with all the local laws here but I'm pretty sure we're now complicit in this... investigation." Hawk pokes his head curiously through the doorway, marveling at the sheer amount of wax in the shop. Erring on the side of caution, he mutters a quick spell and sweeps his eldritch gaze across the room.

Rounding a corner and strolling into sight, along the same path as the elven woman - but a long stone's throw behind her - comes another interloper on the team's questionable endeavors. The olive skin, dark hair, and loose smile identify him as a Varisian. But his clothes peg him as a practical traveler - from his stained and worn boots up to the unkempt ponytail curtailing the excesses of his hair. As an after-thought, he deftly unties the simple leather thong holding his hair back, re-gathers his mane, and quickly reties it. Satisfied with his presentability for an introduction, the Varisian smiles genially. "Hiya. I'm Hawkren. Folks call me Hawk... well some folks, at any rate. It seems that we may all be here on related errands." He turns his keen, dark eyes on the creaking door the team appears to be shielding, "We going in there, or what?" The question is curious, not challenging, and the smile sits reassuringly on his face.

Works for me. So presumably the Baron sent out word when the curse/epidemic hit (and before he got demented), soliciting help and offering a reward of some sort. The odd epidemic and rumor of it being somehow related to the Fetchlings would be enough to pique Hawk's curiosity.
