Though running out of a new product at launch is a GREAT problem to have for the folks at Paizo, I know which booth I'll be sprinting to when those doors to the Exhibitor's Hall open at 10 AM next Thursday.
The Omnibus Pledge Level gets you over 30 poster maps and over a hundred map tiles on PDF for only $50! Christopher West's awesome maps are perfect for the Iron Gods AP, Numenera (actually, he was the cartographer for that game as well) or any other sci-fi RPG, especially if you're wanting print-on-demand assets or need imagery and maps for your VTT.
James, Question about Gen Con and autographs-If I brought some materials authored by you to GenCon, could you sign them while walking around the Paizo area of the Exhibitor's Hall or is there a specific 'signing event' I need to attend to get your autograph? I ask only because I've talked shop with you every time I strolled the Paizo booth over the past few years, but didn't know if that was an appropriate time to ask for your 'James Jacobs' on my copies of things like 'Red Hand of Doom' or Dungeon #85-'Lord of the Scarlet Tide'. Speaking of which, 'Lord' is by far one of the coolest adventures I've run. Thank you for taking the Underdark and turning it on its head.
I noticed that in addition to the 'Iron Gods AP Item Cards Deck' that there is a 'Tech Item Cards Deck' coming out in November. Is this accessory meant to lend additional support to Iron Gods specifically, or is it more geared toward use in any sci-fi RPG? If the latter, perhaps they're for use in an as yet undisclosed project, the Future of which could be Unspeakable?
With this book and the other Iron Gods related releases, maybe we will be able to take PF rules and play a sci-fi or post-apocalypse RPG. About time. I too hope that the Iron Gods AP is a proving ground to feel out the public demand for a full-on sci-fi version of the rules. Unspeakable Futures a la James Jacobs anyone?
James, regarding how you run your own games: 1) How do you manage conditions and buff tracking for higher-level groups? Do you use combat management software, whiteboards, etc.? 2) Do you let your players level-up their characters abilities as soon as they acquire enough XP to hit the next level, or do you wait until the end of section, chapter, or the end of the scenario?

So when Iron Gods becomes overwhelmingly successful, will you likely take that as an endorsement for Unspeakable Futures?
James Jacobs wrote: The rules for firearms and other WWI era tech in Rasputin Must Die is NOT the same rules as the tech rules from Unspeakable Futures, though. Given that the Androids and Robots used in Pathfinder are taken from your Unspeakable Futures game, will the tech rules in Iron Gods for firearms and energy weapons be analogous to Unspeakable Futures, be more in line with the tech rules used in Rasputin Must Die, or be something completely unique to Iron Gods? Also, seeing as bits and pieces of your Unspeakable Futures game have been introduced into Pathfinder over time (i.e. Robots, Androids, energy weapons), will Iron Gods feature much more from Unspeakable Futures than a few Robots and weapons? I ask because it seems as though Iron Gods will be the proving ground for a lot of sci-fi elements, such as those from Unspeakable Futures, that you have been wanting to try out in the mainstream for sometime, which is great!
Hey James, just wondering if you ever got around to assembling and/or painting the Worm Drake, Aboleth, Harbinger or Maralee miniatures? Sorry the 'leth took some battle damage in my luggage on the plane out to Indianapolis, but the tentacle looked as if it was a clean break at the glue joint to the body. I'm super stoked about the ‘Iron Gods’ AP. Great to have you at the helm of such an exotic and anticipated campaign. Man, between that and M.C.'s 'Numenera' release, it's shaping up to be quite the Sci-Fantasy year...It’s about time too!

I am placing the custom miniatures I commissioned a sculptor to sculpt for me over the past 4 years up for sale. These are ORIGINAL sculpts I paid to have for personal use in my home games and are not reproductions. Anyway, here is the list of custom miniatures I’m selling, in case any of you are interested in picking them up before they are gone forever. All the miniatures are metal and/or resin and are unassembled and unpainted. The painted examples are of the sculptor's own copies of the miniatures and are for reference only. NPC Dave wrote: Do you work for Middle Pillar Path Painting? Nope, but I've been their customer since 2008. Great husband and wife painting business, but they are taking an indefinite hiatus in favor of better paying day jobs. They haven't stated if they are going to take on new commissions eventually. But, at the moment, they are only painting as a personal hobby, due to work/life time constraints, which is understandable.
Bloodwort wrote: If you're talking $10,000 U.S. that seems a little high Like I stated, it's over $16,000 in cost for the miniatures, paint jobs & custom sculpts. I could go down to $6,500, but that is the lowest I could go for the entire set of over 550 miniatures. That comes out to about $12 per miniature & that includes Gargantuan sized or larger and unique miniatures. Considering you can't get some pre-paints for that low of a price, I call that a good deal.
Attention fellow Age of Worms players & GMs, I am placing my collection of over 550 miniatures, spanning the entirety of the AoW AP, up for sale and I’m hoping to find someone who can give it a good home. The set is comprised of miniatures from WoTC, Reaper, Rackham, Privateer Press, Otherworld, Magnificent Egos and Dark Platypus, all of which have been professionally painted (or in the case of pre-paints, repainted) at either ‘centerpiece’ or ‘display’ quality, by Middle Pillar Path Painting. There are no mere ‘tabletop’ quality miniatures in the set. Here are some of the MANY AoW-themed miniatures conversions: AoW villians & monsters conversions spoilers::
There are also MANY custom sculpted miniatures in the collection, including: AoW villians & monsters custom sculpts spoilers::
There are 12 galleries on the MPPP website, one for each adventure, depicting the full gamut of the miniatures collection. The collection includes multiples of most non-unique monsters, in case CR needed to be adjusted upwards, many spell effects miniatures, and TONS of familiars, animal companions, summoned animals and swarms, again just in case they are needed. I can provide full MS Excel spreadsheets, which list the entire collection. It took an investment of more than 5 years and over $16K to make this massive set a reality. This was a labor of love and I am looking to part with these miniatures as a set, but would consider parting it out for the right offer. I am asking $10K for the entire set, but will entertain offers. If interested, send me a PM or just post on this thread that you are interested.
James, Is there an appropriate place on the Paizo website where I can post my collection of over 500 custom painted miniatures spanning the entirety of the Age of Worms campaign for sale? There are MANY custom sculpted miniatures in the collection as well, including:
AoW villians & monsters spoilers:
Any information or advice on where in the forums, or on the website in general, I can list these baddies and help them find a good home is greatly appreciated!
James Jacobs wrote: In fact, finding and scavenging/repairing a vehicle is the way your group will normally gain its first car. In one game I ran, the group got a pick-up truck at about 5th level, and then upgraded to a helicopter that they had to scavange parts from all over the place to get working again at about 13th level. You had mentioned in an earlier post that the world of UF is pretty high-tech. Are the futuristic vehicles that were readily available at the time of the cataclysm more numerous and easy to find than say a pick-up truck or helicopter that may be 150 years old or more? Similarly, is it easier to find a laser pistol than say a revolver, if the setting takes place so far in the future?
James Jacobs wrote:
In UF, are operable, pre-cataclysm vehicles few and far between, similar to artifact equipment and weapons or are they readily available in towns/markets? Do you allow your group(s) to keep the vehicles they find/scavenge/acquire, like treasure ("Hey, now we have a Grav Tank to go with our Bubble Car!") or do you limit their impact on the game by using vehicles as plot-devices that the group(s) don't get to keep for very long?
James, Given that they are magical in nature, do you think metallic Golems, Clockworks, Shield Guardians, etc. would tarnish, rust or otherwise develop patina over time? Spoiler: In the Dead Heart of Xin, the constructs held in stasis were not described as having shown any wear or loss of finish, despite their age and being held underwater for millennia, but I wasn't sure if it was due to the stasis effects keeping them suspended in time or because they are magical creations and so are impervious to tarnishing, rusting, etc.
James Jacobs wrote: I was coming down with a pretty wicked cold at the time too... so I bet that didn't help my navigation ability. Con crud is no bueno. We'll bring the GPS receiver this time! James Jacobs wrote: YAY! Worm drake!!!!!!!! Thanks! No problem dude, least we could do! Age of Worms was so much fun. We're looking forward to chatting with you again in person this summer at Gen Con. When you're at Indy, do you get to actually play any games or do anything other than just man the Paizo booth or talk at seminars?
James Jacobs wrote: I'm REALLY not a fan of crowds, which Gen Con has in spades. I look at Gen Con as part of the job. It's not a "reward" to me to be able to go to Gen Con, and it's not something I look forward to. This is unfortunate, but understandable. I hope my girlfriend Sara and I weren't too much of a bother whilst trying to find the darn room for the 'Future of Paizo' seminar with you last Gen Con. We actually thought it was hilarious that we were all lost together in that labyrinth of a hotel with all the trains for what seemed like ten minutes trying to find that hidden conference room. After that seminar, I gave Erik a couple of custom miniatures for his contribution to the Age of Worms campaign, but this year, I am bringing along a nice custom Worm Drake miniature for you. I just had it cast, and since Worm Crawl Fissure was one of my favorite adventures and the Worm Drake was pretty brutal to throw at my PCs, I thought you'd like to add it to your collection as a "thank you". But for the upcoming Gen Con, hopefully the 'Future of Paizo' seminar will be in a hotel with a room that's easier to find! :)
James, Do you guys have any plans to release Small and/or Huge size Elementals in upcoming miniatures sets? James Jacobs wrote: I LOVED those shows, along with others like Twilight Zone, Monsters, Outer Limits, etc. Finally, someone who remembers 'Monsters'! I loved watching that show back when I was in high school. Do you remember the episode where the newly weds stay in the honeymoon suite that has a bed made out of spider silk next to an elevator where a gaint spider lived? I remember watching that thinking "okay, so why are we staying in the room with the bed next to an elevator full of webs?" But, I guess, that's the whole point. :)
James Jacobs wrote: If you're using modern firearms, you need new classes. The gunslinger isn't intended to be a modern or futuristic class; it's meant to be a class used in a fantasy setting where guns are either rare or not ubiquitous. Potential Spoiler:
Considering that modern firearms and equipment are used by some of the foes in the upcoming “Rasputin Must Die!” adventure, will the firearms rules from Ultimate Combat be used as is, tweaked for the adventure setting, or will there be a modern firearms rules blurb in the back of the AP? Does Unspeakable Futures use the same firearms rules as in Ultimate Combat or are they tweaked/altered for the setting? Likewise, do you feel that the robots in the Inner Sea Bestiary are usable as is in post-apocalyptic settings (such as UF) or would they need to be tweaked/altered as well? Sorry for the question wall, but I’m asking because I’d like to use the Pathfinder rule set for a post-apocalyptic science fantasy campaign and I wanted your thoughts on what it would take (i.e. a major headache or a little bit of work), considering you’re familiarity with the genre.
James Jacobs wrote: A huge part of cards being cards is the physical quality of the card itself. I agree totally, but as a GM, I like the ability to print on demand, such as with the map and handout PDFs. Not having to purchase 4 packs of Item Card Deck X just so all the players can have the Coiled Rope Card seems reasonable enough to me. Further, one could use a simple paint program to alter colors or add effects to items, like making the Red Potion Card into a Green Potion Card, or adding a "glow" to a Long Sword Card, getting the most mileage out of the Deck. Again, just my thoughts as a creative and budget-minded GM, but from your point of view as a designer and Paizo employee, what do you think about that? A completely unrelated question, have you ever considered creating a Darklands-based (not necessarily against the Drow) AP? If so, would you try and tie it into the surface world so any race could be used as characters or would you base it from start to finish underground, so only Darklands races would be used as characters?
James, Would a potion brewed in the Mwangi Expanse have the same color, smell and taste as the same type of potion brewed in say, Tian-Xia, given that Potions & Oils are just liquid forms of spells and so require the same material components? I wasn't sure if it made more sense to assume that like Potions & Oils had the same look and/or flavor, regardless of where or by whom they were made, if nothing else but for the sake of simplicity, or if cultural or environmental differences made slight differences in the finished potions. Also, will the GameMastery Item Cards ever be offered in PDF form? Seeing as how just about everything else for Pathfinder can be bought in print or PDF, is this something you guys have considered?
James Jacobs said wrote: Again... It was more inspired by the way Ravenloft split up its setting by giving each realm its own "genre" of horror ruled by its own classic horror for that genre, be it gothic vampire horror, Lovecraftian horror, mad scientist horror, east Indian horror, etc. I like the division of genres allowing the campaign to go in any direction that seems interesting. It's the same reason why Golarion rocks-want to play an Eqyptian-themed or a Pirate-themed or an Oriental-themed or a Gothic-themed or Thundarr-themed campaign, fine. It's all there, a sandbox of tropes.
James Jacobs wrote:
That sounds epic! It kind of reminds me of the climax of... Spoiler:
when I ran players through Gamma World's 3rd Ed. "Cities of Man" campaign-arc, where they had to reassemble a "Sky Chariot" (space shuttle) and fly into space for the end-game. Only they were looking to find their saviors as opposed to unfathomable horrors from beyond time and space! I like yours better. When you've run UF campaigns/scenarios, generally speaking, were the characters survivors of the event, were they born/reactivated after the event or were they sleepers/vault dwellers that awoke after the event?
James, Does Unspeakable Futures take place during, immediately after or way after the apocalypse? What caused the apocalypse? Was it the Lovecraftian, "The Star are Right", return of the Great Old Ones, more of a manmade event, like a nuclear war, or some of both? Also, what was the level of technology at the time of man's fall in UF? You mentioned Androids and Nanotech, but was there any uber high-technology, like anti-gravity, force fields, or teleportation?
