I feel like such an evil man, playing with all of your emotions as I receive data on optimal low-level combat techniques. For what it's worth, Eben, I'm sending in a zero-casting goblin. We'll see how that goes.
Well, like I said, I knew it was going to be an up-hill fight from the get-go. And I'm interested to see how your gobbo does. I nearly did a very similar build (and still might).

Against Shigeharu, I think you did not employ the right defenses (protection from elements would have helped a lot).
Yah, but the thing is, that was the first I'd seen him use Shocking Grasp. And the spell wasn't what killed me (either time), it was the crits. Me yanking 10 points of damage off the top of that spell damage might have helped, but Rolg would still have dropped. Now I've seen him use electricity AND cold damage offensively… though I have to actually win 3 in a row for that to matter.
Liane wrote:
For tangleshot vs universal unguent: it's more 2.5 for 1 (20 gp vs 50 gp), but I agree it 's a really strong effect with no save and an easy ranged touch attack.
My mistake on the prices, but you get the idea. It's a losing tactic for the person removing the tanlgefoots, so all the opponent has to do is stock up enough.
Either way, sorry for complaining. It was frustrating, but it is what it is. I'm not shelving Rolg just yet. Just trying to figure out how to get another win (or three).
Crushing Pearl would have been first order of business, yes. And I rolled an 18 for initiative. Oh well. Back to 0 rep level 4 for Rolg. It's actually the prevalence of Tanglefoots that annoys me most. They're so cheap when compared to the counter to it (solvent) that it makes it useless to buy solvent. For instance, you can buy 10 tangleshot arrows for the price of 1 solvent... not cool. But i guess it is what it is.
.
I was hopign to be able to put together a buidl that could do fairly decent without being a ranged or magic-using combatant... that dream is being beaten down one loss at a time. :/
.
I'm tryin to decide if I should just go with the flow or try to stick it out.
Well, i knew i was in trouble when i lost initiative (by 1). It was gonna be an uphill fight from there. Then I should have gone for the Ear Piercing Scream once Fatigue and Entangle rolled off the first time.... like I said, frustrating, but well-played on your part.
.
Double-critting simply expedited the whole thing.
Did you cast that defensively (swift action spells still provoke, right)? If not, it still provokes an AoO. If you did, i'd love for you to have to use what I'm assumign is an abysmal roll you just made for that tangleshot attack for your concentration roll. :D
The arrow skitters off the dwarf's shield, and the dwarf responds by rushing across the intervening space… once again readying his polearm as he gets nearly directly underneath Liane. His shield falls to the arena sands, reverting to its original size.
Arbiters:
Double move to A/B 11/12
Drop shield (in B.12) + rage
2nd rd of rage used
Mutagen rd 9 of 100 (cast @ surprise)
shield of Faith rd 8 of 20 (cast @ rd 1)
Divine Favor rd 7 of 30 (cast @ rd 2)
Enlarge Person rd 6 of 10 (cast @ rd 3)
Double move to A/B 11/12, drop shield and re-angrify.
.
So that should be another Pearl Acro + Liane Ride if you want to get gone.
.
You're up.
Rolg watches as the little opponent slips from his reach once more, wincing as yet another little arrow pierces his defenses. He moves to the southwest to find some cover.
Arbiters:
Drop rage, double move to F/G 3/4
Mutagen rd 7 of 100 (cast @ surprise)
shield of Faith rd 6 of 20 (cast @ rd 1)
Divine Favor rd 5 of 30 (cast @ rd 2)
Enlarge Person rd 4 of 10 (cast @ rd 3)
Hmm. Regarding the mounted Acro, i feel sure it's necessary (as you and the mount are both leaving a threatened square), though i haven't run into this myself. I don't know how I feel about both having to make the check, but on the other hand, both are trying to avoid the AoO.
.
Regarding substituting a swift in place of a move... I've never seen (or can't remember) rules to support this. There's this, though,in the PRD section for swift actions: "You can, however, perform only one single swift action per turn, regardless of what other actions you take."
Another arrow zips in to penetrate Rolg's armor. His face contorts in a dark grimace as he begins hustling to follow the little flying halfling. With seeming supernatural effort, he crosses the entire arena sands, pushing through his entanglements, to end directly under Liane and her mount. There is fury in his dark eyes as he looks up at her.
"Kom ned, litt flygende ekornet, så vi kan spille."
Dwarven:
"Come down, little flying squirrel, so we can play."
Arbiters:
Swift for Quick Runner's Shirt + double move to get a triple-move to B/C 6/7
Then Rage
Mutagen rd 6 of 100 (cast @ surprise)
shield of Faith rd 5 of 20 (cast @ rd 1)
Divine Favor rd 4 of 30 (cast @ rd 2)
Enlarge Person rd 3 of 10 (cast @ rd 3)
1 rd of rage used
Entangled rd 2 of 4 (cast @ rd 4)
Move to B/C 6/7 (that's 3 15-foot increments) and angrify.
.
You're up.
Round 3
The arrow slams into the dwarf, but somehow it doesn't even slow his approach nor seem to affect him near as much as such a well-aimed shot should. This time it's a potion he retrieves, drinking its contents and dropping the empty vial on the sand as he doubles in size.
Arbiters:
Immediate to negate crit (jingasa)
Retrieve and drink Potion of Enlarge Person (expanding to F/G 19/10)
5' step to F/G 10/11
Perception:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 23
Mutagen rd 4 of 100 (cast @ surprise)
shield of Faith rd 3 of 20 (cast @ rd 1)
Divine Favor rd 2 of 30 (cast @ rd 2)
Enlarge Person rd 1 of 10 (cast @ rd 3)
Retrieve and drink potion. 5' step to F/G 10/11.
Unless you have total cover/concealment from Rolg, he has a Perception of 23 to locate you.
.
You're up.
Round 1
The dwarf watches the little opponent flit to another corner of the arena. He gives a dark grin, "På et tidspunkt må du faktisk gjøre noe, flygende ekornet!"
He then draws and activates a scroll. It flutters forgotten to the ground as he takes an advancing step closer to Liane.
Dwarven:
"At some point you have to actually do something, ya flying squirrel!"
Spellcraft DC 16:
Shield of Faith
Arbiters:
Swift to Judge Protectively
Draw and Activate Scroll of Shield of Faith
Caster Level DC 3:1d20 + 1 ⇒ (15) + 1 = 16 - Success
5' step to G.08
Mutagen rd 2 of 100 (cast @ surprise)
shield of FAith 1 of 20 (cast @ rd 1)
Draw and use a scroll. 5' step to G.08.
.
You're up.
Surprise Round "Du er rask," Rolg grunts before flicking a vial into his hand and drinking it. His long-hammer drops into both hands as the dwarf stomps toward his airborne opponent.
Dwarven:
"You're quick."
Arbiters:
vial = Mutagen
Draw vial from wrist-sheath. Drink it. Move to H.07.
.
You're up.
Rolg stomps out into the sunlight, geared the same as he has been every fight so far. (Full description of gear is on profile page) He tosses down his extra pole arms as he regards the halfling with her airborne mount.
"Flott! Jeg har sett deg kjempe, liten jente. Dette bør være interessant."
Dwarven:
"Great! I've seen you fight, little girl. This should be interesting."
The enraged, enlarged Rolg spends another twenty seconds or so working off the frustration of the last few failed fights on the remains of the dark elf. When he's done, he splatters his boot and the arena wall with her dark blood by kicking the lumpy mess that's left of her back towards her arena entrance.
Consider this a few rounds of CDG's for big damage.
He vents the last of his rage into the open-air of the arena before picking up his gear, waiting for his potion to wear off, and stomping back through his own entrance.
Yah, you roll a 1 on that Mirror Image? I was also surprised you didn't Shield + Mage Armor up during that brief respite ... that's kind of what i expected.
.
But either way, well played and GG.
Sigh.. jeez mcCrow, but that's a lot of snow-balls to the face. :(
.
And yah, the spell Rolg cast keeps you from casting defensively. It was a bit of a hail mary (as I'm assuming you have SR), but there was really nothing to lose in the attempt.
Rolg's massive hammer slams down as Elinora begins to attempt to cast.
AoO to Lucerne Hammer Strike.
Attack 25, Miss Cance 3 (shooting for under 50) - SUCCESS, Damage 24. Which means (if this hits) you now need a Concentration check to complete the spell through damage.
.
Then, if the spell still goes off, his fort save was successful.
Elinora wrote:
I know the rule about if you dont move during your turn you can 5-ft move, but I honestly don't know if that applies if you took a move action to stand up. If it does, and she is still alive, she will 5-ft move to the right.
Yah, I agree with you. While it's a move-equivalent action, I don't think it's movement, so a 5' step should be legal. Which square you ending in? It won't change my attack, but it might affect whether he moves or not.
Round 8
The giant dwarf continues his relentless assault, delivering a second over-hand chop of the huge hammer in an attempt to smash her into the arena sands.
Hammer Strike 23, Miss chance 50 (shooting for under 50), Damage 25. Um... not sure if this is a successful hit or not... do you know?
.
Let me know your position (after the 5' step), and I'll decide if Rolg will adjust his position accordingly.
EDIT: On whether 50 is is "Successful". If I'm shooting for 50%, and shooting for teh low roll, that would be 1-50 is good, 51-100 is bad... so I'd think that second shot (if a high enough attack roll) would be on Elinora, not an Image.
Rolg seems unaffected by the Staggered.
.
Also, was that armor-cast spell from the same armor? Or are you wearing multiple sets of armor? If it's from the same armor, can you do that? Other than the round you used a scroll, I don't see that you had a full-round to re-charge the armor you used earlier. If it's multiple sets of armor, don't you think Elinora wearing multiple sets of armor would be obvious to Rolg? I just can't seem to find where you referenced that was the case (if that's the case).
.
Also, Rolg is holding his AoO for now; finish out your round.
Round 7
Rolg takes the spell directly, but keeps coming. He ignores layers of goop, frost, and pain as he raises a hand and points at the woman and barks out a few syllables in a strange tongue.
Spellcraft DC 16:
Litany of Sloth. You can't cast spells defensively.
Then, finally, Rolg unleashes the primal anger that's been boiling under teh surface. With a screaming battle-cry, he swings his hammer low to take the smaller elf's legs out from under her.
Arbiter:
Move to G/H 7/8
Litany of Sloth
Concentration DC 16 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
SR Caster check DC 9 • 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16
So, any visual difference in Elinora from the last few rounds? Still only 1 Mirror Image?
Rolg is now twice his size, stronger looking, and harder-looking.
Well, sadly, Rolg is no Hulk. If he were, now way any number of crits could actually take him down. :(
I don't' like that it says "up to GM discretion" at the end. But for our purposes – since it sure looks like more than 1/2 of Rolg would be exposed – let's say he only has partial cover.
Arbiter:
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Eep... barely made the save.
Round 4
Rolg is able to avoid the worst of the goo, continuing to watch the dark elf as he draws and drinks the contents of a vial. His body responds instantly… limbs becoming thicker as his skin takes on a fibrous, dark tone.
Yep. I mean, if you're using reach, kind of stupid NOT to take it, right?
Arbiter:
1d20 ⇒ 3 1d20 ⇒ 15 1d20 ⇒ 14
Rolg takes a face-full of ice. He's slowed but un-phased. It does slow him down enough to take the arrow in the side, despite the cover provided by the column. The dwarf doesn't even register that poison might have been on the arrow at all.
Round 3
Despite it all, the dwarf stands. As he shrinks down to his natural size behind the pillar, Elinora can see him draw and use a scroll, though she can't see him to identify it.
Arbiter:
Draw and Use a Scroll of Cure Light Wounds. Activate Judgement of Healing
Concentration DC 16 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Rolg shrinks back down, draws, and uses a scroll. He's currently in C.10. You're up.
Cool. Though that actually provokes twice since you can't cut that corner (meaning you have to step to B.08 then to C.08). So 2 AoO's coming right up. Also, as there are 3 Elinoras, Rolg's shooting for less than 33 on the percentage.
Rolg lashes out with a pair of spiked kicks at the tiny, fleeing drow.
First AoO: Attack 24; Miss chance 39; Damage 12. (I'm hoping this is a hit that's turned into a destroyed Image).
Second AoO: Attack 18; Miss chance 16; Damage 12. (I'm hoping this is a hit, though i'm guessing it's close).
Lol. Didn't consider the Quick-Runner's Shirt. /facepalm. And no, at regular size, Rolg's reach is normal for a reach weapon…10ft.
Arbiter:
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Round 2
As much as it would have seemed impossible a few seconds ago, the woman's retreat makes Rolg's scowl deepen. He explodes to twice his size and lumbers between the two columns, eyes following the she-drow.
"Kjører bort ... det er din store plan?"
Dwarven:
"Running away… that's your big plan?"
Arbiter:
Embiggen as swift.
Then move to C/D 10/11.
Then ready an action (PM'd to you, Master of the Pits)
Rolg doubles in size, then moves to C/D 10/11. You're up.
Elinora can see Rolg pull out a second scroll and use it, unfortunately, the column keeps her from being able to see what it is. It becomes moot, however, as he hustles forward toward the center of the arena, edging towards her.
"Selvfølgelig er det tre av dere nå."
Dwarven:
"Of course there are three of you now."
Arbiter:
Draw Scroll, activate it. Arbiter, the scroll has been PM'd to you.
Then Rolg activates his Quick Runner's Shirt to close to E.09
Draw scroll. Activate Scroll. Then hustle over to E.09.
A low grunt is the dwarf's only response before he flicks his own wrist, producing and casting his own scroll just as quickly before beginning to advance.
Rolg draws a scroll from a wrist sheath.
Arbiter:
Draw Scroll of See invisibility from Spring-loaded sheath, cast it
Caster level check DC 5 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16
... and successfully activates it.
Spellcraft DC 17 (if cover doesn't obstruct your view of Rolg):
See Invisible
Invisibility is now a non-issue for Rolg. He rolled a 16 to see Elinora. Can he see her? If so, where is she?
.
Either way, he 5' steps to K.10
Rolg stomps out through the southern entrance, slowing to a halt as he drops his extra two long-hafted hammers on the white sands. With one meaty hand, he pushes the lip of a shiny helmet away from his dark eyes.
Planting the butt of his remaining hammer in the sand, the rugged dwarf prepares himself for whatever this newest combatant can throw at him.
PRD - under Big And Little Creatures in Combat wrote:
Large, Huge, Gargantuan, and Colossal Creatures: Very large creatures take up more than 1 square.
Creatures that take up more than 1 square typically have a natural reach of 10 feet or more, meaning that they can reach targets even if they aren't in adjacent squares.
Unlike when someone uses a reach weapon, a creature with greater than normal natural reach (more than 5 feet) still threatens squares adjacent to it. A creature with greater than normal natural reach usually gets an attack of opportunity against you if you approach it, because you must enter and move within the range of its reach before you can attack it. This attack of opportunity is not provoked if you take a 5-foot step.
Large or larger creatures using reach weapons can strike up to double their natural reach but can't strike at their natural reach or less.
That last bolded part is what's important. Rolg's reach weapon means he threatens up to twice his natural reach, which is 10. Rolg's armor spikes allow him to also threaten that first 10 feet as well.
And thanks for clarifying the mirror image thing for me… I was hopeful (but doubtful) that it'd get one, but wanted to make sure before I continued. Which brings us to...
When the human shrugs off his mental assault, Rolg quickly points at the man, barking out a single syllable.
Yes. Quick question, though (and once it's cleared up, I'll finish Rolg's turn). Just now, when Shigeharu provoked an AoO while seemingly unarmed. Rolg rolled an 8, and I asked if he was within 5 of your AC so as to destroy one of your mirror images. (I didn't see your answer.)
.
Keep in mind CAnny Defense only works if the Magus is "wielding his chosen weapon". So, did that 8 pop a mirror image?
Rolg's scowling eyes latch onto his invisible opponent, and – in a surprising show of athleticism – he rushes across the intervening space, sliding to a stop in the human's face.
Rolg was only able to take a standard action, so he took advantage of this and his mega-reach.
Arbiter:
1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Nope, but context clues...
--- Round 1 ---
Rolg's eyes gain a look of fatigue as he drops back down to his normal size, draws, then uses a scroll as he seeks out his target.
Arbiter:
DC 5 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (4) + 8 = 12
Shrink to H.10. Draw and use a scroll. If cover is a factor, you can't ID using spell craft. I rolled a Perception check in case you used Stealth, and – if you take invisibility out of the equation – can Rolg see Shigeharu with a Perception result of 12? Let me know, and I'll decide if my turn is over.
If cover doesn't obstruct view between the two, Spellcraft DC17:
