Ghur moved into position, coming up behind the last orc. It was so focused on Ayla that it completely missed Ghur, whose axe hit with devastating result. Coming down directly upon its head, the axe cut clean through from skull to groin, causing the orc to come apart in two halves. Looking at Ayla, whose wounds were already rapidly healing, he snorted as he tried to get his bloodlust under control. Part of him wanted to keep going. To keep fighting. What helped him calm down, though, was knowing how he stood no chance against the warrior in front of him. If he continued he knew that he would die, and that alone was a great source of calm. Breathing deeply he looked around. He wanted to say something encouraging to the group, but words failed him. All he could do was close his eyes and take deep breaths, which slowly went back to normal.

His axe slick with blood and viscera, and with the same running down his horns, it was not much of a surprise that Ghur's accuracy was soon comprised.

The scream sounded familiar, somehow. As if though he had heard it before? Regardless, Ghur brought his axe down upon the nearest orc, catching it where the shoulder and neck met.

Ghur let himself go, savaging the orcs with both axe and horn. One unfortunate found itself battered by the blade, only to be lifted bodily into the air by Ghur's horns and tossed unceremoniously to the side.

It seemed that the orcs would only listen to orcish diplomacy. Luckily, Ghur’s axe was large enough for the task.

Ghur closed his eyes and tried to calm himself. His nostrils flared and his muscles tensed as he fought a losing battle against the anger bubbling inside. "Later." He managed. "The orcs are resetting the traps and they *must* die."

Ghur groaned, a wave of guilt rushing over him. He had convinced the group not to just kill the orcs and to try and use the traps against them. It didn't work. He also convinced the group to siege the orcs out, and now the orcs had gotten free and were using the same traps he tried to weaponize. If he had just resorted to violence, then they might well have already been heading home with prize in hand. He got to his feet, his axe gripped tight. He would not make the same mistake twice. The orcs would die, diplomacy be damned. (un)fortunately, violence came quite easily.

Ghur put a hand on Rui’s shoulder. ”There is no glory in any of us dying needlessly.” He said. ”Those in town would sing songs should it happen. Not in memory of the fallen, but out of joy. For they sent us here to die.” Bitterness dripped on every word. ”Let’s not give them the satisfaction.” Realizing that his hand, meant to be comforting; had begun to squeeze; he let it go. With a deep breath to calm himself he walked away towards the waiting warmth. ”Let the orcs sit in the cold with their thirst. Maybe then they will be willing to talk.”

”We’d need to be able to talk to them first.” Ghur said. ”Orcs aren’t known for that. But if we leave one alive…?” Thinking out loud he said ”We could also camp here for a day. Leave them in there with no food or water. Maybe more. They might be willing to talk then. Or if they fight they’ll be so dehydrated that they won’t be able to do it well.”

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24 While his friend looked for a secret door, Ghur went to the closed doors. ”Orcs.” Ghur called out. ”I speak to you as a Minotaur. Strength to strength.” He said in a clear and loud voice. ”I could leave you here to starve. Or I could set you free. I have come here seeking treasure, for ones…stronger…that I, have demanded it.” The distaste in his voice was evident. ”Your comrades have already fallen to my axe, but I did not come here for their blood. Or yours. Which is why you let live. Tell me where I can find what I seek, and once it is in my possession these doors will open.” It was, he thought, worth a shot. Because as much as he would have liked to have crushed the orcs and have been done with it, he was willing to settle for solid information.

Ghur triggered the trap. It meant either locking them all in, giving the group time to loot the place and get out, or it would mean separating the orcs if only some managed to get out before the doors closed. Either way was good to him. He had no personal vendetta against the orcs, and he wasn’t even being paid for this. He saw no reason to put any of them in more risk than they had to be, all for the sake of broken furniture.

Im sorry im really confused. Perhaps it’s me not getting how all the switches worked, but I rolled two nat 20s for Ghur to understand what me as the player does not and rolled 1d4 for what position…so he would do something even if I as the player am not smart enough
Or…4 is off. We are in 3. 2 is crush? So flip to 2? As a player I think that will crush the orcs now…

Int check to use the levers to turn the traps against the orcs: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (20) - 1 = 19 "Rui, run!" Ghur called out. Standing at the levers, he thought back to what she said that they did. He *thought* that he understood. All he had to do was pull the right lever at the right time, and the death trap that was this place would be turned against the orcs. And how hard could that be? Pulling a lever was as easy as could be. And he was certain that it was...that one. Yes...certainly that one. Probably that one. Anyways, he was going to pull that one and he was fairly confident that it would do something useful.

Ghur stared at Rui with a bemused look on his face. He had been a farmer. And after that a lumberjack. Never, not in all of his years of life, had he ever had to flip a switch before, let alone figure out what a combination of flipping switches might do. He shrugged helplessly, wondering what it meant if clockwork was involved. Clocks, to him, might as well have been magic. "It...sounds right." He said. "I think it is best if we leave the flip switching to you..."

"To recover the costs of stuff damaged and broken your all asked to fetch some items from some mountain ruins where some orcs live. " Ghur frowned as he thought back to what they had been sent there for. He had the sinking feeling that they were going to die in these ruins, and that was the point of the exercise. [b]"Right. Let's stop and think. What do we need to get? Or at the very least, to loot enough to cover the expenses. An orc's axe is one thing, but the chances of dying to gas or a collapsing room?"[/b[ He shuddered at the thought. It was one thing to be brave in the face of danger he could fight. It was another to be brave in the face of a danger that could kill him without him having even the chance to struggle.

”Well damn.” Ghur said. ”Maybe the switch did that. Or it stopped the place from being filled with killer bees. Either way, what’s done is done.” Thinking for a moment he said ”Lets see if it starts going back up. Otherwise we’ll need to find another way in. Or another switch.”

It was his hope that the others would assist him, but what truly mattered was whether some insidious trap killed them all first.

Ghur gave a curt nod to Ayla and then looked at the door with some apprehension. It was not often that his prodigious strength was insufficient for a task, but when it did happen it was cause for concern. "Let's hope that there is another way out." He said, turning his back to the door. "And let's push on."

Ghur moved to perform a coup de grace on the sleeping orc. Should nobody move to stop him, he was ready to cut it down without remorse. It was, after all, an orc, and he was certain that if the table was turned it would do the same.

”We’re here for a job.” Ghur replied. ”Don’t freeze to death. Don’t get murdered by orcs. Get enough to pay for broken furniture. Get out.” Shrugging his massive shoulders he added ”No reason to fight any more than we have to, so we can survive this mess.”

”Fine. It is a scratch.” Ghur said with gritted teeth. He was very obviously not fine, from the way he walked to the red on his hand from where he had held his wound. Marching forth into the room he stood by the fire to warm himself up. Turning away from the group he pulled out a flask of water and lifted up his armor, so that he could pour said water over the wound to clean it. ”Can’t stop to play nurse.” He said. ”May be more orcs. Need to get what we came for. Can get this stitched up when we get back. The bastards will probably be more than happy to put me in debt for it when they find that they failed to get us killed.” The bitterness dripped off of his voice as he thought about the town. His anger, mixed with the bloodlust from killing the orcs, was a potent mix. He tried to force himself to breathe normally so as to let the anger go. It was, afterall, only hurting himself.

Ghur clutched his side. He was breathing heavily. The orc’s axe would have cut down an average human, though a trained warrior might have been able to fight through it. Ghur was neither of those things. He tried to control his breathing and to force the battle haze to fade. ”Let’s…just…let’s just keep moving. Those bastards back in town want us dead. Let’s hurry up on disappointing them.”

I don’t think Ghur took damage as the orc missed:

There are many places that one should not want to be. Standing in front of Ghur when he was angry was certainly one such place. Raising his axe over his head, he brought it down with enough force to shatter bones.
