How many of you play with the core rules and only the core rules, and why? I do so for the sake of simplicity and to avoid potential balance issues. I also get perturbed with players who are more interested in using the supplements to pimp their character to be the most bada*s in the party rather than allowing creative roleplaying to do that for them. Am I the only one?

Batman begins. Or does he?

I doubt many individuals given a life sentence without the possibility of parole would voluntarily choose death instead, at least not initially, but I'm all for giving them that option. If, as has been said by previous posters, life without parole is worse than death, then not providing such an option amounts to cruel and unusual punishment, doesn't it?

A guy walks in to a psychiatrist's office wearing nothing but a pair of underwear made of Saranwrap. The psychiatrist looks at him and says...

Spoiler:
"Hmmm. I can clearly see you're nuts."

--------------------

Four young mothers and their children gather at a self-awareness session with an eminent psychiatrist (yes, another psychiatrist). "You all have obsessions which you need to come to terms with," he says to the mothers. The psychiatrist looks at the first mother and explains, "Your obsession is money. This is clear because you've named your child Penny." He turns to the second mother. "Your obsession is food. This is obvious because you've named your child Candy." He faces the third mother. "Your obsession is alcohol. I know this because you've named your child Brandy" At this point, the fourth mother stands, looks down at her son and says...

Spoiler:
"Get up, Dick. We're leaving."

Texas public schools struggle to incorporate new requirements on Bible literacy ---- Say What???

This isn't exactly off-topic, but it's not exactly on-topic either. For those who haven't already seen this, assuming it hasn't already been posted in another forum, I give you DM of the Rings. Enjoy ;)

Re: The Right to Marriage Debate
I haven't done any research on the subject, but just out of curiosity, what if a heterosexual couple marries, then one of the partners undergoes a sex-change operation making them a homosexual couple? Is the legal status of the marriage affected? And the reverse, what if one of the partners in a homosexual couple has a sex-change making them a heterosexual couple. Can they now marry wihtout issue?

Apologies if this has already been asked...

As someone who is not religious, I wonder why humanity has not yet ‘evolved’ to a single, globally-accepted religion. I mean, if so many believe in divine, spiritual forces, and we’ve had thousands of years to sort out the details amongst ourselves to discover the ‘truth’, why is there still so much disagreement over the specifics, and because there is so much disagreement, how can any one religion be absolutely, positively sure that theirs is the ‘true’ religion or that there is a ‘true’ religion at all? Even if you are thoroughly convinced that you’re right and they’re wrong - or misinterpreting things, if you prefer - might it be possible at any level that they’ve got it right and you’re wrong? Is that inconceivable? You can claim to have an open mind, but if the possibility of being wrong is not a real possibility as far as you’re concerned, the claim is moot. So, again, if there’s only one ‘truth’, why don’t we have a single, globally-accepted religion by now?

I've recently broken my pc addiction by purchasing an xbox 360, my new addiction. Now I need YOUR suggestions for games to play. Specifically, I'm looking for FPS-type games which allow two players in the same room to play through the game simultaneously as a team. I'm NOT talking about multi-player online modes like 'deathmatch' or 'capture the flag'. I just finished Halo 2 and Halo 3 playing from beginning to end as the arbiter while my friend played as the master chief. That's what I'm looking for. Thanks for your suggestions!

I think I've finally found a good GM. Now we need a few good players.
The game will take place in the GM's own well-developed, homebrewed
gameworld with beginning 100-point characters, 4th ed rules,
Fantasy-genre (i.e. swords & sorcery). This will be a campaign, not a
dungeon-crawl. Below is my post (from another website) to which the GM
originally replied, so I assume this is what he's got in mind for his
group...

"I'm looking to join a serious fantasy rpg group with mature players
and a dedicated game master. I like games with a good story and lots
of detail plus a mix of adventure, roleplaying and action. I'm the
type of player that follows the rules, at least I try to, and I'm all
about fairness, teamwork and getting things done. If you need a
reliable player, send me an email."

If this sounds like your kind of game, please let us know. Thanks.

I sometimes eat lunch in my cubicle during the week to save a little time and a little gas. While I'm eating, I play internet spades or hearts, at least I try to, but I hardly ever get to finish a game :( Why, you ask? Well, many players will quit if they lose the first hand. That's annoying. Some actually quit before the game even starts because, I assume, they don't like their opening hand. That's really annoying. Others are happy to play while I'm losing, but if they start to lose, then they quit. Few ever bother to say a word before their abrupt exit either. What ever happened to electronic sportsmanship?

I'll soon be starting my first D&D game since my last D&D group broke up way back at the end of 2nd edition. Hard to belive, huh. For now, we'll be playing 3.5. I've been skimming through the 3.5 PHB for awhile now, but I don't plan on buying any of the other books or supplements this time around. However, I know the other players will have them. Do you think a character using just the PHB can compete with characters using all the other books and supplements? I've heard there's some pretty powerful stuff outside the PHB, and I don't want to end up the weakest link in the party. Anyway, I'm requesting your suggestions, advice and tips on creating and developing my character to be as capable as I expect the other characters will be. So, with all your knowledge and experience, and all the books and supplements at your disposal, how would you build and develop the perfect scout/archer? I'm leaning towards an elven ranger for obvious reasons, but you all know better than I. What about other classes, prestige classes, races, skills, feats, unique equipment, tactics and tips, etc? Thanks for the help!!!

Just a heads up. Oil reached $90 a barrel today. The local news predicted that the price of gas would take a steep jump sometime within the next day or two. I plan on filling everything up ASAP to save myself some money.

Actually, in a weird sort of way, I'm glad this is happening. Yes, it'll suck to pay more for the gas I have to have to get back and forth from work, but it's no more than people in other countries already have to pay. Yes, I hate that while we get poorer the oil companies get richer, but maybe...hopefully...this'll finally spark a real change in our own behavior leading to smaller, more efficient, less road-damaging vehicles plus the serious development of effective alternate fuels and less-polluting engines. Maybe not, but we can hope.

I just finished watching an anime series called Death Note. Has anyone here seen it? If you have, please skip to my question below. If you haven’t, and you're curious, here’s a plot synopsis first…
An upstanding, brilliant young student finds a mysterious notebook, the death note, which has been dropped into the human world by a death god. The death note gives him the power to kill anyone merely by writing their name on one of its pages. He decides to use this power to cleanse the world of evil by killing large numbers of criminals and thereby creating a safer, utopian society. Once the rest of the world catches-on to what’s happening, and crime drops dramatically, he develops a global following, although some see his efforts as murder rather than leading to the greater good, and they work to stop him. In order to keep his identity secret and continue his efforts, he’s sometimes forced to use the death note to kill one of these non-criminals who learns too much about him, but justifies that to himself by considering them criminals for risking his efforts to make the world a better place. There's more, of course, but I won't spoil it.
Anyway, my question is…What alignment is he? I can see his followers thinking him Chaotic Good for going outside the established law to do what he feels is best for society, but I can see others thinking him Lawful Evil for doing anything necessary in order to fulfill his master plan. What do you think? I told you it was a silly question ;p

This just in: OJ argues that "This is all a big misunderstanding!" Apparently, according to unnamed sources, The Juice had tracked the 'real' killer all the way to Vegas, and had been informed that he was holed-up in the dealers' room, armed and ready for OJ and in cahoots with the dealers. With this revelation, the ACLU now intends to sue the Vegas PD for causing OJ undue pain and suffering by allowing the 'real' killer to escape during the commotion.

All he was doing in Vegas was claiming a few items which should have belonged to him anyway. The only reason he and his buddies burst into the dealers' room brandishing guns is because Vegas is a dangerous place, you know, and it's just safer to be proactively armed. Clearly, this is a fascist plot to sully his good name simply because we're all jealous of his success. He's an American icon, for Pete's sake, who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time...doing the wrong thing the wrong way for the wrong reasons...but that could happen to anyone, right? Shame on us.

PLAYER SEEKING GAME

I'm a serious player looking for a serious game. I have experience with D&D and GURPS, and I'm definitely willing to learn other Fantasy RPGs. I like a good story most of all and good roleplaying. I like adventures you have to think through and talk through, not just fight through. I like encounters that don't always begin and end with combat. I like starting at 1st level (or whatever) and working my way up. I like details; they keep things interesting. I like teamwork. I like games with more to them than simply killing monsters to accumulate power and wealth; that’s great for mercenaries, but not every player wants to be a mercenary. I actually like rules - to keep things fair, balanced and as easy as possible for the dm (or whatever) – but I don't like games that overdo it by allowing every single option from every single book out there; there are some bad options in some of those supplements that aren’t really necessary or balanced. I don't like muchkins or powergamers; they should be playing video games instead of roleplaying games. I don’t like Monty Hall games; too much too fast makes me feel like I missed something. I don't like looooong or excessive combat. I don't usually like dungeon crawls, unless they’re part of a good story. Overall, I guess I’m not what you’d call a ‘casual’ gamer - I like a little realism in the game and I like to get things done - but that absolutely does NOT mean I don’t like to have fun ;) Finally, I prefer small groups, around 3-5 players, and I can only play Friday nights or Saturdays anytime. I know that’s a lot, but better to know everything up front, right? If there's anyone around here playing a game like this or wanting to start a game like this, let me know. Thanks.
