"In Clerksburg, at the apartment of Jerobel Censi on Acorn Way and Sulm Street," Gattel says, pointing northwest. "If he's still there . . ." he mutters.

"Well, you'd better get back and do it!" He hobbles out towards the street, but calls over his shoulder. "Thanks for bringing me back. I need to see my family, now."

Gattel drops the now-shattered necklace, putting his hand to his forehead and beginning to sort through all his old memories. Looking up at Tanith and Carina, he says, "So . . . I was in that cell for years. Looks like you've got a real conspiracy on your hands, kids."

He stands, drawing his short sword and leaning heavily on it. "Tell me, did you destroy those who stole your faces? And the machine that let them do it?"

KC, what are the spider-eyed ones?

The tax collector wipes his mouth with his sleeve, then weakly grabs for the necklace. He simply smiles at Tanith.

Gattel clenches his eyes shut and then opens them again. He sits bolt upright. "Did you know that your bard friend is a fraud?" he splutters, spitting out a mouthful of some dark, lead-colored material.

He also eyes the necklace. "That's for me, I think."

Having detected them while moving the bodies, Tanith retrieves the late Gattel's last few extracts.

Actually it was just the one (bull's strength). Farrukh's been hanging onto the other (detect secret doors). He's hoping to give it to someone else to drink, though, and then they can just walk around the dungeon detecting doors while he opens them.

Tanith, you've been buying and selling armor pretty frequently. Might've lost a few K through that.

Astraden's also got effectively an extra ~5750 from the group funds for the scrolls and shield.

"The bard-" Gattel chokes, stumbling. Then he stands up straight and grins at thin air. "Come on, I drink poison with my tea!"

The tax collector runs through the melee, drawing his syringe as he does so, and stabs Cuetzpalli in the back. In a good way.

Cure moderate wounds: 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (7, 4) + 5 = 16

He drops the syringe, then, and fishes out his short sword, still clutching his bow in one hand.

Gattel spares a glance backward. "Wait, who are you again? We've tested you for doppelgangliness, right?"

Gattel looks between the groups. "Come on guys, clearly I'm the real Gattel. You can trust me!" He aims an arrow for new-Cuetzpalli's forehead. "Sorry to do this, bucko, but I can't have you getting the dinosaur riled," he says, releasing the string.

Round 1: Five-foot step? (no action), studied combat (move action), shoot (standard action). Enlarge person lasts maybe 5 rounds and studied combat lasts 5 rounds if shot above misses.

I think that's Farrukh's territory.

I don't want to come off as rude here, but this attitude seems to be slowing down the game. The door was untrapped and unlocked. Farrukh didn't see anyone moving in there. And he was going to bed, which meant he couldn't make a post to tell everyone that it was clear.

Would he have told us if he'd been online to do so? Hell yeah! And we could have assumed he did, in-character, and just had another one of us open it. The alternative of waiting for Farrukh to post, and then for KC to post in response, sometimes means we go twelve hours without meaningful action or dialogue.

Gattel follows Eben, bow at the ready. He flinches as he enters the "wall."

Gattel looks at the fur warily. "How did you get that?"

He carefully extends his arm through the wall.

"It's real!"

Gattel slicks his hair back and emerges - face still smudged and grimy, but altogether much more presentable. "What've you got there?"

"Alright, you three wait out there. I need to change."

Gattel closes the door and swaps out his filthy, sodden prison rags for some nice clean business attire.

Gattel doesn't wait for Farrukh to give the all-clear. He pulls out his short sword and checks out the wardrobe.

"It might be time to drink that vial, Shield Man," Gattel says, following him back to the friendly side of the pit.

"Here, I'll help." Gattel puts away his bow and takes one end of Farrukh's rope. He steps back a few paces, then runs forwards and bounds across the gap. Balancing on his heels, he attempts to knot the rope to the handle.

Acrobatics: 10 + 9 = 19 DCs are 10 for the jump and 15 for balancing, I think. Not actually that difficult?

Gattel's eyes widen when he sees Cuetzpalli's wound. "Dinosaur man, it is good that you are still alive. I was definitely thinking about coming in after you but the shield man was faster"

He points to the doors opposite the pit. "An easy jump, once those are open. Shield man, can you help with that?"

Tanith has rope in the party fund!

Gattel shakes his head. "Why would a tax collector have rope?"

Gattel squeezes past Spiny to look. He then moves back. "I will not go first."

Gattel looks down at his filthy prison garb, then out the door at the blood-splattered adventurers. "Hm . . . You all may pick first."

"Oh! But there's a wand?" he asks, following Farrukh in.

Gattel picks up the wand and examines it. "Ah, it's Celestial. The writing I mean. But who knows what it actually does."

Gattel goes looking for the arrow that missed. "Shield man, could you check the other rooms?"

Gattel scopes out the other well-dressed thug and fires again, his arrow brushing over Tanith's head.

"It's just like I said!" Gattel, who is currently on the bed and checking the ceiling, drops his sword and pulls out an arrow. He fires at the orc, careful not to damage the dress.

"It's clear," Gattel says on his way out. He attempts to barge into the next door.

"Any of these could be a floor beast," Gattel whispers. He enters, short sword in his left hand, and stabs each object. For good measure, he stabs the floor as well, then climbs up onto one of the beds and gives the ceiling a good whack. He checks each wall with the same procedure.

Gattel finishes his three extracts as well, fitting one into the syringe Filge gave him. He hands one to Farrukh, saying, "This'll let you find elf doors."

He hands Cuetzpalli an identical vial. "This'll make you stronger. Unless you drink it with alcohol. Don't drink it with alcohol."

Loading cure moderate wounds into syringe, giving detect secret doors to Farrukh, and giving bull's strength to Cuetzpalli. They can drink 'em when they want.

"I will," Gattel mutters. "You and your mom just look out for each other and I will come back soon."

His hands keep moving, stirring a pot over a miniature charcoal brazier, but Gattel's eyes are fixed on a point on the other side of the table. He seems to not have noticed Farrukh, but a few seconds later replies. "Ooh, am I on there?"

Gattel sits back down and begins mixing some more vials together.

Gattel takes his syringe back and hugs Filge's leg. "It's really him! I'm so glad!"

He then steps back, and fits one last vial into the mechanism. "This one will fix a few of those bruises."

As Tanith's enlargement is about to run out anyways, I suggest we take a couple minutes for Gattel and Carina to brew new infusions. I could pick up see invisibility, detect secret doors, and maybe another cure moderate wounds for emergencies.

While Tanith works, Gattel pulls out another vial, gingerly rescues the rest from Eben's boots, and gets back to work. He loads the resulting mixture into his syringe and hands it to Eben. "Here kid, this will prove if he's real or not. Probably more effective if you untie him, but your choice really."

He then picks up his sword, sheathes it, and puts his bow back in its quiver.

Gattel drops his sword, pulls his bow from between Eben's legs, nocks an arrow, and lets loose into the creature's stone-like side.

"Gaaaaah!" Gattel's eyes grow wide as he studies the creature, and he accidentally knocks a vial to the floor.

Then he unsheathes his sword, stands up, and stabs the creature's tough hide, all in one movement.

Round 1: Activate studied combat (move action), draw weapon with Quick Draw (free action), get up out of chair (free action?), attack (standard action), and use inspiration on attack (free action). Shield has 19 rounds remaining, enlarge person has 20 rounds remaining, and studied combat has 5 rounds remaining.

If uninterrupted, Gattel will finish mixing an infusion of enlarge person. We've still got probably another six rounds' worth of talking, though.

"Good. You four can go ahead and check out the next door, if you wish. The bruised man will probably not escape."

Gattel shrugs and gets back to work. "I'm the only one who remembers. Large man, is there anyone coming down the corridor?"

"Hmm. Also, it was me," Gattel says, rubbing his forehead. He looks down at Filge. "You've certainly failed to file. What were your earnings in the year 581?"

Wisdom: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10

"Well it wasn't me!" Gattel says. He lays his bow on the table, then sits down and begins to mix some vials.

"No! Shh! I will get you out of here. I was stuck here too, y'know. But then the lock melted. You'll get out of here," Gattel says, patting Filge on one of his bruises.

He turns back to the rest of the group, smiling wide. "I know a way to test him!"

"Unusually ugly table, that, isn't it?" Gattel whispers, indicating the southern table. He steps into the room and pulls the beaten man's gag down with a nocked arrow. He quietly asks the man, "How fare you, old friend?"

"It may be orcs," Gattel murmurs back.
