It Came from the Vast

Playtesting matters! Please fill out the playtest documents!

Thank you everyone. It always feels weird being the chump at a table full of super stars!

It Came from the Vast

CeeCee has no problems wrecking everything (on purpose). With Sample 62 defeated and the weapons sabotaged, you can return to your ship and leave.

Once your’re out of range of the blast, Captain Imaaz triggers the weapons as promised, causing a series of explosions that destroy the Bloom and everything left on it. It's time to fly away and dispatch Captain Imaaz’s final message to the Verdant Paradise.

The Xenowardens stationed on the Verdant Paradise reach out to you immediately, paying each of you 1,000 credits for your trouble—and your silence—noting that any information on Sample 62 and its planet of origin could spark corporate or public interest and is best kept confidential. They thank you for saving the Pact Worlds from an incredibly dangerous creature, noting that you are heroes even if no one in the Pact Worlds will ever know it!

It Came from the Vast

So I think it's impossible to use Intimidation here without something like Glare. You're in space, so nothing with the Auditory trait will work.

Dae, still wounded, but undeterred unleashes another supernova. It blasts right through the sample, overwhelming it in fire. Shockingly the Bloom's fronds cradle the corpse as if protecting it. Light and energy begin pulsing into the corpse, as if to somehow repair it.

You're safe enough for now, but who knows for how long... Scuttling the ship requires an Arcana, Crafting, Computers, Nature, or Thievery check.

It Came from the Vast

Ceilidh keeps Dae in the fight, at least a little longer. Sample 62 seems burnt and near death, but who knows what it's capable of!

It Came from the Vast

As soon as the thing makes itself known, the party opens fire. CeeCee makes good on the family legacy of cantankerous disdain for the enemy. Shockingly the fronds of the ship bend to provide cover for the beast, but CeeCee's aim is too good and connects with a direct hit. The creature's tough body seems to resist the impact of the bullet a bit.

Dae's weapon, however, is JUST the right tool for the job as the creature burns far more than expected. It's mouth opens in what you assume is pain, but in space no one can hear you scream.

The Bloom turns a pair of vines on the party and lashes out while simultaneously excreting something that connects to the Sample and you watch in horror as some of its wounds close.

Vine 1 v. Dae: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32 for DOUBLE: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Vine 2 v. Dae: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21 MISS

It immediately closes on Dae and continues the assault. CeeCee quickly pulls the trigger again, wounding the creature.

Bite v. Dae: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (8) + 17 = 25 for DMG: 2d8 + 7 ⇒ (6, 3) + 7 = 16
Claw v. Dae: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28 for DMG: 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (1, 6) + 7 = 14

The bite also seems to invigorate the thing.

Sample 62:

It Came from the Vast

Playtest rulebook: "Every type of modern armor has built in environmental protections which, when activated, protect you from the vacuum of space, to ensure that you can survive for a few days if you must make repairs to the hull of a starship, explore an airless alien world, or endure exposure to an environmental breach in a space station."

The party suits up, and heads outside to the guns. I'll take: Arcana, Crafting, Computers, Nature, or Thievery check.

It Came from the Vast

All doors have been checked. Just need to know where, who, and how, you're going outside.

It Came from the Vast

What now then?

It Came from the Vast

Much like the port specimen lab, this laboratory is a mess of debris and broken specimen containers. There's a weird combination of equipment on the floor here: an advanced flamethrower on the ground in the corner (fully emptied of petrol), an autograppler, 200 feet of cable line, and a commercial antigrav harness.

It Came from the Vast

There's still an unopened door.

It Came from the Vast

Looking around you discover an advanced tank of petrol, an advanced incendiary grenade, a hacking toolkit, an infiltrator’s toolkit, and a tactical radiation buffer.

It Came from the Vast

The starboard cargo bay contains replacement parts for the starship, as well as UPBs and assorted inedible sundries. There may be some useful gear in here if you search around.

It Came from the Vast

This is especially true since we're playtesting the system, and gear is changing a fair bit.

It Came from the Vast

Sounds like a vote for outside? Any other plans?

It Came from the Vast

CeeCee knows that was a bit too much radiation, but feels fine.... for now.

It Came from the Vast

Get ready for a Starfinder specific rule that isn't in PF2.

CeeCee successfully extracts the material, but there's no way around the radiation exposure. FORT save

It Came from the Vast

Returning to the engine room, the party stares at the biomechanical drift engine... Harvesting the material is either an Engineering check or, if you've got the tools, a Thievery check.

It Came from the Vast

"Good luck, we're all counting on you."

As the captain fades away for the time being, you're faced with a choice, where to?

It Came from the Vast

“Sample 62 knows you’re here. They psychically bonded with the Bloom after my death. I’m no longer in control.” The ghost frowns for a moment, lost in a glimmer of a memory, then refocuses on the present with a shake of her head. “Time is short. To kill Sample 62 and their brood, you must destroy the Bloom completely. Not even one of Sample 62’s hatchlings or eggs can survive to reach Bretheda or the Verdant Paradise.”[/b]

"The Bloom is a biomechanical starship and will self-repair in time. However, it’s highly vulnerable to radiation. You’ll first need to harvest the radioactive components from the Drift engine. With this material, climb onto the exterior hull and sabotage the starship’s weapons, so they explode when triggered to fire. Be sure to integrate the radioactive material. Then, you can flee back to your starship. I’ll trigger the guns myself, from the bridge—I retain enough of a connection to the Bloomfor that, at least. Once you’re away, send my final message to the Xenowardens on the Verdant Paradise. They’ll know what to do and will ensure that Sample 62’s home planet is quarantined. Can I count on you?”

It Came from the Vast

"During a routine survey mission to a newly discovered dwarf planet in the Vast, currently known by the temporary identifier VDP-32074-S, we collected a variety of biological and environmental samples. After these samples were secured into the Bloom’s laboratories for further study, we departed, plotting a course through the Drift to the Pact Worlds to drop off their samples at the Verdant Paradise, a Xenowarden arkship that serves as a mobile research laboratory."

"During the journey, one of these samples escaped confinement. Originally a flatworm, Sample 62 is capable of rapid bio adaptions—the creature adopts the characteristics of organic materials they consume. At the time of the creature’s escape, Sample 62 was a foot-long, six-legged insectile creature with sharp mandibles. Now, Sample 62 is what you saw.... Although the crew attempted to recapture (and later to kill) Sample 62, we failed."

"Fearing the threat webelieved Sample 62 posed to the Verdant Paradise, the last remaining crew members hatched a desperate plan. I recorded a warning that I intended to dispatch to the Verdant Paradise. Meanwhile, Thast attempted to deactivate the starship’s engines, including its Drift engine, to render the starship adrift in space. Neither succeeded. My message was recorded but failed to send, as the Bloom’s communications array had been damaged during the crisis. Thast deactivated the Drift engine and damaged the engines but was devoured before he could fully scuttle the starship."

It Came from the Vast

Maybe it's the pain of the wounds, but something in the delivery matters Your prose indicates Diplomacy, but your dice indicate using Religious skill to perform an exorcism. Either way, net success.

The Beast from Beyond vanishes, leaving only the captain. The captain's ghost takes a more solid, but still translucent, form. "Thank you. Thank you. I.... see that I am dead." Her face reads heartbroken but determined. "I am certain you have questions. What would you like to know?"

It Came from the Vast

Going exactly by the playtest Dae pleads with the captain, but it's no good. It looks like the ghost would be receptive (she does turn to look at Dae for a moment), but entreating with ghosts is even harder than exorcising them.

Neither Dae nor Obo do anything about the haunt, though Dae tries...

Behind the scenes since it's a playtest, it doesn't say, but attacking it isn't an option, so I'm trying to lean into the haunting aspect despite the very physical damage it can do.

CeeCee tries something, but is clearly not trained for this. Dae looks around, and sees the ghost of the captain staring in horror. Maybe trying to draw the captain's attention will help. Diplomacy also may work v. the Haunt.

Dae walks on to the bridge, followed by Obozaya. For the briefest moment you see the ghostly outline of a person running around frantically before vanishing.

suddenly everyone sees the outline of a.... monster. It's hard to make out its shape and features. It's more feeling than image. Regardless it pounces on Obozaya like a predator on prey. I need a will save from Obozaya.

It Came from the Vast

The party is currently standnig in the doorway looking on to the bridge like about a half dozen scenes in Clue when they find a new body.

It Came from the Vast

No one sees anything come out, and after a few seconds, the feeling subsides...

It Came from the Vast

Dae:

You suddenly realize one of the hatchlings got into your armor! You feel it crawling up your leg under your greave!

It Came from the Vast

Not entirely sure if this ship "grew" its bridge in the bow, the party preps for the double doors...

The bridge of the Bloom is surprisingly pristine. Though dried blood stains one of the consoles, everything else is seemingly intact. The air is chilly, and the mournful sound of weeping echoes through the room from everywhere all at once.

The lights everywhere flicker for a moment.

It Came from the Vast

Doesn't look like there's anything else of interest here.

It Came from the Vast

CeeCee finds a couple things of value: an advanced laser rifle and spell gem of personal gravity

It Came from the Vast

This private cabin looks like it belonged to someone important, maybe the captain. The room is messy, but not destroyed. It's hard to make heads or tails of what's inside without taking time to look.

It Came from the Vast

This washroom has an airlock door in the port wall, poorly camouflaged behind a hanging garden coating the wall. This airlock exit has an exterior ladder.

It Came from the Vast

There seems to be little left in this room. There are doors on ever other wall though.

It Came from the Vast

Continuing to move abaft, CeeCee opens the door to a dining area - or rather what's left; bone shards, cloth fragments, and a stray shoe are visible amid the debris.

It Came from the Vast

Staying admidship and moving aport, Dae checks out the other side of the ship. This side is a similar bunk area. The slime is ubiquitous here to. Still, there are some interesting finds: magboots and a datapad filled with reports from throughout the Pact Worlds about mutated flora and fauna, which the owner surmises is caused by “the strange expulsions from Aucturn’s hatching.”

It Came from the Vast

The letter smells like the ship.

It Came from the Vast

Dae also struggles to decipher the letter.

It Came from the Vast

Everyone moves to different doors, and quickly they realize that he meant astarboard ;-)

Obozaya opens the door. Immediately the slime inside makes everyone look around for hatchlings. There are a ton! Thankfully they're spread out enough that you can easily eliminate them before they swarm.

Even a cursory glance is fruitful. You discover a jetpack and an old fashioned, coded paper letter, written in a cipher. Society to decipher
