Hello there, Sorry for the delay in responding. I have been away for a bit enjoying the woods. Not much reception but the streams are wonderful. A quick update. Yes, there is reasonable hope that this game will restart soon. With the added staff, my workload has eased significantly which is allowing me to get out and enjoy the beautiful spring weather that we have been having in eastern Pennsylvania. I have been hiking a lot, and attending some minor league baseball games. It is really awesome to go to the games and scream my head off to blow off steam. Very few places is screaming socially acceptable, and I am loving it. :) I think I am finally coming out of my burn-out funk where I did not even want to look at a computer after work. I have been thinking of this game more and more and will hopefully dive back in soon. Creative energies are starting to flow again. It feels real good. Bear with me a bit more. I want to make sure that I can truly commit to 3-5 posts a week. This stopping and starting is not fair to you wonderful folks. For now, may your rolls all be Nat 20's
GM Screen:
Scout Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (12) + 8 = 20 Following Koloshkora’s direction, you swim deeper into the reef. Through the watery depths, the shapes of two halves of a once mighty sailing ship emerge. The broken bow rests on its side in a south-westerly direction. Coral grows up its hull, indicating that the ship has been here for a very long time. About twenty feet to the northeast rests the stern in an upright position. Surrounding the mainly intact halves, barely visible ship detritus blend into the coral and sandy ocean bottom. Perception DC 20 :
As you swim closer, you catch a glimpse of a slender Sahuagin swimming into the stern of the ship. What do you do? See Slide 5 for a view of the reef and ship.
Thanks for the motivation! I really miss playing this too, and knowing that you folks are still out there really helps. These last several weeks have been a whirlwind of busy to complete insanity. I feel like my company unleashed a Chaos Beast on me. Almost every night I make a plan to post something after dinner, but by then I am totally zonked. Some good news and hope, they are hiring someone to take over my Pennsylvania clinics which will take away about 1/3 of my work. We did hire someone already, but they only lasted 6 days. We have someone else who should be starting by the end of the month. After some training, I am truly hoping that I will then have the time/energy to save these damn colonists already. As of now, this weekend looks open. With the motivation, I am hoping to post something. Thanks everyone for sticking with me. Let's slay some Sahuagin!
Been in a brain fog due to long hours at work. February is turning into a busy month. I recently learned of an acquisition of three more Jersey clinics which I will be responsible for. These clinics will be going live within the next few weeks. I will try to get this game moving when I can. Looks like my weekends will remain free for now, but I am working on taxes this weekend. I will post when I can. Stay warm!
With the Healing available: Sho can get to max with 2 wand charges and 1 GoodBerry Brannart can get to max with 2 CLW spells and 1 wand charge Fenna can get to max with 1 wand charge and 2 GoodBerries Vexas used a potion. Can get to max with 1 wand charge and 11 Good berries. Total expended: CLW potion (Vexas's inventory) Malakar's 2 CLW spells 14 GoodBerries (There are 2 remaining) 5 charges from wand. If this works, please update inventory / spell slots. Let me know if you want any changes. I'll assume we can go ahead to the sunken ship with everyone at full HP. Off to a football party to watch the Eagles. I expect next week to be really busy with the end/beginning of the month coming. I will post as I can. Please post any preparations, buffs, etc ...
Koloshkora Attacks Sahuagin (Yellow):
Koloshkora Longspear Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 201d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 Koloshkora watches the last Sahuagin in its frenzied state. The Locathah realizes that it is hyper-focused on feeding on the Halfling, who drew first blood on the beast. It spins its trident chaotically, somehow defending itself from attacks by Razor, Fenna and Brannart. Soon, it will chase down the Halfling. While engaged with her companions, Koloshkora sees an opening. Launching herself high into the water, she brings her spear from above. The weapon pierces downward into the top of the barbaric monster, breaking through its skull and severing its vertebrae. Koloshkora braces her clawed feet against the beast and yanks the spear out. The bloodied Sahuagin lets out one final scream and continues to twitch in its frenzied state, but its head is caved in and its eyes glossed over. The current takes the body away on a raft of its own blood. After a moment, Koloshkora looks at you all, "I do not believe we are out of danger yet. Their leader was not among them. I see their lair ahead, we should prepare for more bloodshed." As you look toward where Koloshkora points, you see among the reef the broken halves of a once proud sailing vessel.
Sahuagin (Yellow) Attacks Vexas:
Sahuagin (Yellow) Blood Frenzy Attacks with Trident: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 141d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 The remaining beast flies into a rage as its blood swirls in the water. Its eyes bulge with a reddish hue and its scaley hide expands. It screams at Vexas and thrusts its spear, but the Halfling luckily ducks out of the way. Phew, I was getting worried for Vexas. He is down to 8 HP. Razor's turn for Round 3, and everyone can take their Round 4 actions.
Sahuagin (Black) AoO Against Sho:
Sahuagin (Black) Trident Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 101d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 Sho ducks out of the way from the beast's trident as she swims away. Her arrow pierces its neck as Malakar's spear punctures through its gut. The beast gives a final blood-curdling frenzied yell, then its eyes glaze over. As Malakar releases his spear from the scaly hide, the body floats away on the soft current.
Sahuagin (Yellow) AoO Against Vexas:
Sahuagin (Yellow) Trident Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 231d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 Vexas's bolt finds purchase in the beast's scaley hide, but the Halfling pays for it. As Vexas releases the shot, he feels a tremendous burst of pain as the monster's trident pierces through his flesh.
Sahuagin (Red) Attacks Brannart:
Claw 1: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 241d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
The frenzied beast growls at Brannart and unleashes its mighty claws against the veteran. Two penetrate through his armor and those gaping wounds offer Brannart's blood to the sea.
Sahuagin (Yellow) Attacks Vexas:
Sahuagin (Yellow) Trident Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 201d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 Sahuagin (Yellow) Bite Attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 61d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 The Sahuagin pulls its trident back and stabs out again. This time, its weapon finds Halfling flesh. It screams out in fiendish joy, as its jaws move in for a taste but misses it mark.
Koloshkora Attacks Sahuagin (Red):
Longspear 1st Attack: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (17) + 10 = 271d8 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4 Longspear 2nd Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 81d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 Sahuagin (Black) AoO against Sho:
Sahuagin (Black) Trident Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 151d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Sho's aim is perfect, as her arrow finds purchase in the beast's thick, scaly hide. In its frenzy, it barely notices all of the blood pumping out of its body. Keeping mind of the danger behind her, the Ranger twists, causing a trident strike to graze off of her armor. With the four-armed beast still standing, Koloshkora shouts something that seems like a prayer as she thrusts her spear. Her first strike punctures the Sahuagin's side, but the beast slaps away the second strike with a clawed hand. Somehow, in its rage-like state, the beast still stands. Aquan: May my Shokokoba ancestors guide my strike and send this devil to its grave.
Sahuagin (Red) AoO against Fenna:
Claw Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 241d6 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7 As Fenna swims backward, away from the four-armed beast, and prepares her spear for another thrust, the Sahuagin lashes out with a razor-sharp claw and tears through her armor. The Bard sees her own life force filter out and cloud up the pristine ocean water, turning it a pinkish hue.
Sahuagin (Yellow) AoO against Vexas:
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 131d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 As Vexas turns and points his crossbow at the Sahuagin behind him, the beast lashes out with its trident. Vexas dodges to the side as he releases his bolt, causing both the projectile and the tri-tipped weapon to miss their intended targets.
As mentioned in the Discussion Thread, without a Swim Speed, a PC is not able to use the 5-foot step feature. Fenna can move back the 5 feet as a move action which will require a Swim Check, but this will provoke an AoO. Also, Yellow will be entitled to a AoO against Vexas. I will make these attacks shortly, then continue with Koloshkora and Yellow's turn.
Brannart is surprised at the inefficiency of his swing as his longsword slices through the beast. Normally, a solid strike like this would cleave an enemy in two, but the beast still stands. It appears almost crazy with its own blood swirling around its body as it snarls at the veteran. Its sharp teeth within its large mouth prevailing as its dominate feature, quickly followed by its almost crimson-glowing eyes.
The four-armed monstrosity growls as Malakar's spear pierces its side. If it hears Malakar's taunt, it does not react to it. The beast is dead-focused on Brannart as its eyes start to turn a crimson red and its scales seem to expand, making the beast seem even bigger. Even its claws appear sharper, if that is even possible. Sho, Brannart, Fenna, and Vexas are up.
ROUND 2 Current Conditions: Inspire Courage Sho
Sho, Brannart, Fenna, Malakar, and Vexas can take their 2nd Round turns. Then I'll have Koloshkora take her turn if any Sahuagin are still alive.
Sahuagin (Black) Attacks:
1 = Vexas / 2 = Fenna / 3 = Brannart / 4 = Malakar / 5 = Sho / 6 = Koloshkora Sahuagin (Black) Attacks: 1d6 ⇒ 5 (Sho) Sahuagin (Black) Attacks Sho with Triden: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 71d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 The final Sahuagin beast glides high in the water, landing behind Sho. It stabs its trident at the Ranger, but she is ready and easily dodges the poorly-aimed thrust.
While reading up on underwater combat, I came across when you can and cannot take a 5-foot step, which I think might apply with Brannart and Fenna's next turn. Let me know if I have this right or if anyone disagrees. Typically, on land Brannart and Fenna would be able to take a 5-foot step back, then attack again with their reach weapon. Since they are underwater and do not have a swim speed, am I correct in stating that they cannot take a 5-foot step. See Archive of Nethys 5-Foot Step Rules The last sentence states: Quote: You may not take a 5-foot step using a form of movement for which you do not have a listed speed. Also, as a side note, I am assuming that PC's without a swim speed qualify for firm-footing during combat or are rolling Swim Checks.
Not sure what I was thinking earlier. Fenna is entitled to an AoO, due to her reach, but Malakar is not. I'll post Red and Black's attacks in a bit. Fenna stabs out with her spear. Still getting used to breathing and fighting under water, she does not account for the slight underwater current causing the spear's projection to shift far to the right of the oncoming four-armed threat. It grins at her, but then that grin turns into a wail as Brannart's weapon pierces its flesh.
Sahuagin (Red) Attacks:
1 = Vexas / 2 = Fenna / 3 = Brannart / 4 = Malakar / 5 = Sho / 6 = Koloshkora Sahuagin (Red) Attacks: 1d6 ⇒ 3 (Brannart) The larger, four-armed beast swims up to Brannart, but the veteran is ready for it with his ranseur. Brannart positions his weapon for the fast approaching creature and lances it through the chest. The beast is still alive, but Brannart's vicious hit gives both Fenna and Malakar an opportunity to finish it before those large claws can rake death among the party. Both Fenna and Malakar can take AoO before I conclude (Red's) turn.
Sahuagin (Yellow) Attacks:
1 = Vexas / 2 = Fenna / 3 = Brannart / 4 = Malakar / 5 = Sho / 6 = Koloshkora Sahuagin (Yellow) Attacks: 1d6 ⇒ 1 (Vexas) Sahuagin (Yellow) Attacks Vexas: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 231d8 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 Fenna, not yet accustomed to shooting underwater, misses with her bolt. Another of the Sea Devils swims above the group, out of range of any reach weapons and lands behind Vexas. With a quick thrust, the fish monster jams its trident through Vexas's chain shirt.
Malakar's words are lost on the beast that initiated the conservation, since it is now food for the sea. The new attacker brings its trident to bear and blocks the Druid's spear thrust. Malakar, apologies, you are correct. The Sahuagin should have had only the one attack since it moved first into position before attacking during its turn. Assuming that Fenna used Inspire Courage during what I am calling the 'Surprise Round', she still gets to act in Round 1. Is Fenna still Readying her crossbow attack, or would she like to move closer. If she coated her bolts with the Oil while using an underwater crossbow, she can shoot at 40ft without any penalty.
Sahuagin (Green) Attacks:
1 = Vexas / 2 = Fenna / 3 = Brannart / 4 = Malakar / 5 = Sho / 6 = Koloshkora Sahuagin (Green) Attacks: 1d6 ⇒ 6 (Koloshkora) Koloshkora AoO w/ Longspear: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 171d8 + 1 ⇒ (8) + 1 = 9 Sahuagin (Green) Attacks Koloshkora w/Trident: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 181d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 Sahuagin (Green) Attacks Koloshkora w/Bite: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 21d4 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5 As Brannart destroys one of the Sahuagin, another swims up to Koloshkora. She is ready for the beast and strikes it with her spear, stopping the beast's momentum. It attempts to strike out, but the Locathah ducks below the stabbing trident.
Prepping Barkskin is fine. We'll assume that Malakar has half of the spell's duration remaining. Sahuagin (Purple) Attacks:
1 = Vexas / 2 = Fenna / 3 = Brannart / 4 = Malakar / 5 = Sho / 6 = Koloshkora Sahuagin (Purple) Attacks: 1d6 ⇒ 4 (Malakar) Sahuagin (Purple) Trident Attack at Malakar: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 171d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5 Sahuagin (Purple) Bite Attack at Malakar: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 61d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2 Sho, still getting familiar with shooting underwater, misses her target as her arrow sails through the water far above the four-armed monstrosity. One of the aquatic beasts swims up to Malakar and growls something in Aquan and laughs. Its position is slightly above the Druid as it strikes downward with its trident. Malakar's quick reflexes blocks the attack with his spear then dodges another attack as the beasts attempts to bite down on the Druid's head. Aquan: "I enjoy when my food comes to me."
Did Sho plan on moving closer before she made her shot? It would still be a miss, but I would like an accurate position for when it is the baddies' turn. I am not considering the sahuagin flat-footed. They would have had a Surprise Round which I used for them to swim closer. As they got closer, Fenna was able to point out the danger in time. She had the highest Perception roll for the group. I'll take Purple's and Koloshkora's turn a little later today.
Quick reminder with underwater combat with ranged weapons: -2 to attack for every 5ft. Exceptions: Underwater bow or crossbow allows 20ft with no penalty. If the projectile is coated with the oil, the attacker gains an additional 20ft, for a total of 40ft. Penalties would start at 45ft with -2. There is also the Aquatic Shot Feat that I added a link to from my 12/18/22 post.
After Fenna’s warning . . . ROUND 1 Sho
Sho is up first. The Ranger sees aquatic humanoids with sharp teeth racing toward her. There are five that she can see. Four of them carry three-pronged spears, while the fifth appears slightly larger. The fifth creature carries no weapon, but instead has four arms with large claws. See Slide 5
See Slide 5 Initiative Rolls: Brannart: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Koloshkora: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (11) + 3 = 14 Sahuagin (Black): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
