Small note: I promise that future posts and encounters will be far less heavy-handed than today's. Once things get moving, things will be a bit more free flowing.

The lead officer, a middle-aged man with a strong handlebar mustache and rather unruly eyebrows purses his lips together for a long moment, listening to the group's comments, then says, "Well, now. Quite the band of innocent folk we have here...yet, SOMEhow all tangled up with THAT man..."

The gruff officer nods dramatically at Silas, who has his hands slightly raised, and at least has the decency to appear to be embarrassed by the whole matter.

"...Silas Gribb. Also known as Silas Grab by some folk, and Silas the Smuggler by a few more." The officer takes a long pause to give the entire group the once over. "For those of you who might not know me, my name is Sheriff Benhovy. I am what you might call, The Authority. These men behind me, some of whom are aiming crossbows your way, are my deputies."

He nods to Silas, "You, sir, are under arrest for suspicion of smuggling. Now, now, don't try and deny it. We already caught your contact here, and frankly...well, Veltner there heard every word you said before heading this way. All your plans. Sent word to me and the boys here to be ready for you."

At this, the gnomish driver of the second cart nods and climbs down from his spot, moving to join the Sheriff.

Silas is speechless, and seems in shock but from the looks of things, if weapons were not currently trained on the wagons, Finneas and Gorth would have attacked him on the spot.

At this point, your Diplomacy rolls kick in

The Sheriff pauses again, for a bit too long, then says,"Deputy Hodd. Take mister Silas into custody."

Hodd, a slender young soldier and three others move to Silas' cart and politely help him down, though Hodd keeps a hand on the likely-smuggler's arm the whole time.

"But what to do with the rest of you?" Sberiff Benhovy rubs his chin. "I'm considering arresting you all, just on principle."

No offense taken,Xylas. LOL

Crappy, tbh. Sadly, lots of family drama.

HOWEVER. The soft relaunch will be tomorrow.
Seriously folks, I appreciate the patience you've shown, and will endeavor to make your wait worthwhile.

This game is going to happen.

Ok, our family is back in town, a day later than we planned, but with the holiday smacking up against losing my wife's uncle, it was harder to say good-bye to everyone, and easier to get convinced to wait to come back until today.

Will post SOMETHING and be hopefully back on track tomorrow. (Monday)

Thanks for understanding, guys.
Seriously appreciated.

Apologies. My wife's uncle passed away suddenly yesterday, and things quickly got hectic over here. We're helping out, and so I might need a day or two more for things to settle down. Sorry, can't be helped.

1. Was headed here to answer questions and SHAZAM! I've already got folks answering them for me. * grin * Thanks, guys.

2. Just waiting on Xylas to post before I get moving. (That and an absolutely chaotic night at home with the kids) Will post tomorrow regardless.

"YOU, sir, are under arrest for smuggling and other crimes against the crown!" The lead officer proclaims, looking and pointing directly at Silas.

For his part, Silas looks over at Finneas and then at a couple of you before shrugging, "Uh...I'm innocent?"

The guardsmen move forward towards the cart, hands on weapons and eyeing each of you warily.

Sorry for the split post. Somehow during an edit, I hacked this part off the bottom of the first post...

The opening post for the game is up, folks, so allow me to welcome you officially to the Dragon's Demand.

Feel free to start posting.

Note: The setup situation is intended to be an opening scene, and not a TPK moment. If any of the characters decides to battle it out, so be it, but it should feel rather overwhelming...and besides, they are asking for Silas, not any of you, right? :)

“Listen, I wouldn’t trust just anybody with this job. I need the right person for this job. And you, my friend, look like the right person for this job.” So spoke Silas Gribb to each of you in private, just a day or two ago.

You met Silas when he was recruiting adventurers and mercenaries in the Taldan port city of Cassomir to work as protection for what the grizzled human described as a very delicate cargo that needed to be delivered on quite a tight schedule to Wispil, the 'Lumber Capital of Taldor'.

This last, he proclaimed quite proudly.

At first, the enterprise is exciting and almost fun, espcially with the thought of the promised payout at the end of the ride. Three days travel on the road to reach Wispil, with 30 gold for each of you per day, and more if any combat became necessary.

And so, with three wagons, your group set out yesterday morning, with Silas on the first of the wagons with his right hand man, Finneas; a gnome named Veltner handled the second; Gorth the half-orc driving the last, with the rest of you scattered about, two to a wagon.

Silas, on the whole, discouraged conversation amongst you all, prefering everyone to focus and be on the lookout for trouble...but thus far, the road has been clear of both obstacles and bandits, and the weather looks like it will hold. Even when the group stopped for the night, the worrisome merchant insisted on three of you on guard duty at all times.

Still, the trip through the outskirts of the Verduran forest turned out to be uneventful, and when Belhaim comes into sight, it's at least something of interest. The town itself presents a sleepy, rustic façade to all appearances, and appears in large part to be self-sufficient.

Also of interest, is a group of three guardsmen on horseback near the town entrance, and six more guards standing at attention as you approach. The lead horseman, obviously command in both his manner and medals on his armor lets the lead wagon get withing a few yards and then calls out, "I am looking for Silas Gribb! Present yourself, sir, for questioning!"

As he speaks, three more guardsmen come out of the woods along the road with crossbows trained on the wagons...

[ooc]Ok, what do OUR characters see? Which Median do we see, the one the ground and one walking through the orcs?[/b]

Wow. Quite an international game. Cool.
EST, Michigan, GMT -5

No worries about posting rate just yet, as I am planning on handling this in a mostly relaxed manner. Sure I'd like to see a post a day, pretty much like most games here, but if everyone can work in at least 4 appearances a week, I'm good with that. (Especially until we see how this all balances out, with all the different time zones.)

My intent is to post a prologue of sorts later today/tomorrow, and get the game fully moving by Monday. To answer your question, Xylas, when I start posting for Gameplay, that's when you'll see it in your campaigns.

Congrats to the folks who got in, it's it's great classic high fantasy adventure, so enjoy it!

Yes, please wait-list me!

Alternatively...

Because of my character's backstory/interest in one of Hunclay's books, Tal would be a fun guest star in a specific scene (no spoilers, but I'm sure GM knows what I'm referring to) if you think that might be interesting.

Interesting idea, Dickie.

For anyone not chosen for the adventure, let me know if you'd be willing to be on a wait-list if I need replacements, AND also if you're at all interested in a walk-on NPC role if needed. (Obviously there would be parameters set up for the NPCs, as well as some scripting.)

That COULD be fun.

S'okay. Doesn't look there's any last minute recruits or changes being done, so I'm going to go ahead and call it now. (5:30 pm EST)

This party selection was seriously FAR harder to make than I thought it would be at first glance. I fully appreciate and respect all the time and effort everyone put into this, and I really want to thank you all for making this recruitment a success. I can honestly say that none of the characters was lacking, and everyone who applied was worthy of consideration. Over this week I read and sometimes re-read every submission and looked them over in detail. Nobody phoned it in, and for that, I'm both surprised and honored.

My criteria for choosing was both group balance and cohesion. The next level was for storyline possibilites and interesting character interactions. Finally, character likeability and survivability.

In the end, I changed the roster several times, but I think that this is the list of characters for this roleplaying journey.

Would the following characters please join me in the Discussion thread, and post a quick greeting so I know you're still interested?

***Cordia - Human Rogue (CG)***
****Thorfinn - Human Barbarian (N)***
***Bumolin - Dwarf Druid (NG)***
***Kuvan - ½ Orc Sorcerer (CG)***
***Roxy - Halfling Bard(NG)***
***Xylas Foundling - ½ Elf Cleric (NG)***

To anyone not chosen, please know that this was not an easy process, and I really wanted to choose all of you. In the end, I even added an additional slot, but really can't handle trying to run more than 6 characters at a time.

If you're willing I would be more than willing to keep your characters in mind as possible replacement characters should any of the original six leave the game. Again, I really wanted to keep more of you...I just couldn't.

In any event, I humbly thank you all for your time and consideration for this endeavor.

Welcome, folks, and congratulations (or condolences) on making the team!
I am GM Minotaur, your host, and welcome to the Dragon's Demand!

********

First things first, here's a couple important rules all my tabletop players know about my GM'ing style:

1. If YOU can do it, the NPCs and Baddies can do it.
Basically, if you start asking for items/feats/skills/etc that are out of the norm, or worse, twist the rules in ways they really weren't intended...keep in mind that if it's approved by me, then whatever it is you're doing could be fair game for the bad guys you encounter. Fair?

2. If I ever say in an OOC comment (or send you a message) that reads:
"Do you do this of your own free will?"
...that should mean you should immediately pause and make sure you are positive that the course of action you're currently choosing is what you REALLY want to do. It's intended as a fair warning from the GM that what you are doing just might be really foolish and have disastrous results.

I won't stop you if you really want to do something horribly dumb, but what comes next is on your head. I am far from a killer-GM, but sometimes characters and players get caught up in the moment and choose...poorly.Fair?

********

So, all that possible unpleasantness aside, please sign in, say Hi, and give a brief description of your character and what would be obvious to anyone who indirectly spent more than a day around them. (i.e. as a coworker you haven't really been introduced to yet).

Seriously, it's rarely an easy task.

An understatement, to be sure. :)

A little more than 24 hours, folks. I'm already reading through the characters and looking party balance (Although that All Wizard group could be crazy...) and at possible backstory links between them and whatnot.

Any final touches or questions would be welcome now before I make a final decision...one that's NOT going to be easy. A lot of cool characters here.

Muahahahahaha!

I mean, uh, move along. Nothing to see here. Pay no attention to that man behind the bull's horns.

Not a problem, don't think I'm going with a familiar anyway. Or an archetype for the character either, lol. Is it okay for submission purposes not to buy gear unless selected? It can be a PitA =P

Sure. Unless it's something somehow essential to the character, that's reasonable.

No familiar archetypes, sorry.

Well said, Cordia. ;)

@Humble: That works.

I suppose that if anyone doesn't want one of the campaign traits, because it doesn't match their character, I won't force the issue. Just keep in mind that you'll only get two traits, then.

Niiiice. I may do some rethinking but Dragomir is also a lovable figure in his own right, so he's likely just gonna stay.

Just remember this part:

Folks, I am thrilled at the amount of attention this game is getting, and seriously looking forward to playing. Likewise, I am just as excited to see how helpful everyone is being towards each other. It reminds me of setting up tabletop games back in the old days when everyone looked out for one another, and helped with creating characters. Bravo!

So, I've decided that there will a SLIGHT change to the game plan, because due to Diaz Ex Machina's question, I went Google-ing and BOOM! I found a homebrew Player's Guide. (Thanks, Diaz!)

And so, without further adieu, Presenting:
The Dragon's Demand Player's Guide
Created by someone on these very boards named @LichLoved

I think it's an excellent accessory for this campaign, though there are a few of points of interest I should mention.

1. Ignore the "15 pt build" it mentions. We're sticking with 20 pts.

2. Ignore the list of allowed Classes. We're sticking with the Core ones I've already listed in this thread.

3. Every character will now be allowed (1) Campaign trait along with the (2) they already have. I apologize in advance if this means anyone has to do some character submission rebuilding, but I think it'll end up being for the best.

Any Questions?

I can go the arcane route if necessary. I love sorcerers. Should I make one? Maybe I should. Maybe I would. Probably I'll build one tomorrow. Just wait for it.

I'd be fine with a sorceror, sure. But that being said - Within the requirements, make what you want, so you'll be happy to play whatever it is should you get in. :D I was just mentioning it, since RHMG was undecided.

I'd allow Minor Magic talent requirement to be skipped, but you'd still have to wait until 4th level to get Major Magic talent. (Which is when the current system would allow it). It's a game balance thing.

Just pointing out since you're randomizing it, RHMG, that'll make (3) human rogue submissions.

Not saying it's impossible, but it's improbable that they'll all make the cut...and I've yet to see an Arcane application.

That's a pretty accurate take on it, hustonj. :D

pad300 wrote:
I am unclear on how strictly you are using "Core Only". You are restricting to the core 11 classes. But you are allowing 1 archetype (apparently from any Paizo source). How do you feel about non-core class options eg. druidic herbalism from the Healer's Handbook splatbook as an option for a druid's nature bond?

I'd consider it and other options like it on a one-to-one basis. If it's not game-breaking and fits with the theme of the game, I can be reasonable...sometimes. :D

Character Ideas/Submissions so far:

Melee
Thorfinn Feigrsson - Human Barbarian
Dragomir Vuk (Helaman) - Human Fighter
SodiumTelluride - Barbarian or Fighter
Diaz Ex Machina - Paladin

Ranged
hustonj - Elf Archer

Skill
Cordia Masero (Ariarh Kane) - Human Unchained Rogue
Lizbit Freewind - Unchained Rogue

Divine Magic
Kazmuk Hammerstriker (Mokshai) - Dwarf Cleric
Melet - Dwarf Druid

Arcane Magic
(None)

Did I miss anyone or anything?

Lizbit Freewind wrote:

I'm putting together an UnRogue (this profile) to submit here and I have a question that requires GM interpretation.

Paizo never updated the elf minor magic FCB for UnRogues. You need to take the minor magic FCB at least as many times as the Major Magic FCB, but the minor magic rogue talent was changed to give unlimited uses of a cantrip instead of x times per day, so the minor magic FCB doesn't technically do anything.

** spoiler omitted **

So how would you rule the FCB works, GM Minotaur?
1: The Minor Magic FCB can't be taken so the Major Magic FCB can't be taken - Makes me sad.
2: Each time you take the Minor Magic FCB it gives a new cantrip to use with Minor Magic - Seems OP.
3: Ignore Minor Magic FCB and just take Major Magic FCB every level - Also seems OP.
4: Take Minor Magic FCB at least as many times as Major Magic FCB, it just doesn't do anything.
5: Something else?

I want to take Mage Hand as the Minor Magic talent and Shield as the Major Magic Talent, if it matters.

Ok, I read this over last night, slept on it, and frankly, other than making the ability seriously OP, (which I would not prefer) I think the best I can do is to ignore the update Paizo has done. Since we're talking a character that is a rogue and not a full spellcaster, I'd run it exactly as originally written. Minor Magic Talented would no longer have unlimited uses per day.

Not sure if that kills your enthusiasm for it, but if I were DM'ing tabletop, that'd be my call. It was balanced as it was, so that's how I'd run it here, methinks.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Yep, CORE only, though I am allowing archetypes.

Another point to mention, I appreciate the candor of those mentioning that they have either played this adventure before or are even running it. No, I won't hold that against anyone when I start the unenviable task of picking characters for the party.

I'm pretty sure the combination of restraint on the part of players with insight into the story, the unique backgrounds for the adventurers (which I WILL always work into the game), as well as my own inclination to change up any written module should more than make up for advanced knowledge.

Paizo feats. I'm reasonable. ;)

Since I was asked about it, and didn't specifically mention it before, no Alternate classes either.

Basically, folks, if it's not Core, it's not going to be approved.

Barbarian, Bard, Cleric, Druid, Fighter, Monk, Paladin, Ranger, Rogue, Sorceror, or Wizard.

The only exception might be Prestige classes which you could work towards, but none of which would be available at the start of the game.

LOL. I edited mine while you were posting.
Thanks, RHMG.

Elephant In The Room

Traits: Paizo only, but I won't restrict them to Core

Dragonslayers Wanted!

Founded by a famous dragonslayer, the small town of Belhaim has become a sleepy rural community just off the beaten path, a settlement where everyone knows everyone and strangers are the talk of the town.

But when Belhaim's peace and quiet is shattered by the sudden collapse of the last standing tower of its founder's castle, things quickly bloom out of control. Why were there bodies of kobolds amid the rubble? What's the sinister secret behind the strange sounds of flapping wings in the night? And what's happened to local wizard Balthus Hunclay, who's not answering knocks on his door? The collapsed tower had long been an eyesore to the cantankerous old man—could he have had something to do with its destruction? And what of the rumors of strange stirrings in nearby Dragonfen?

Has Belhaim's ancient draconic nemesis returned?

********

After years of not being able to do any gaming at all, I was fortunate enough to start roleplaying here on the boards and it's definitely given me the itch to start running a game of my own. I debated whether to run a simple, small adventure or venture out with a full AP and after searching the internet, I think that Dragon's Demand offers a little bit of both options. The story allows characters to possibly achieve as high as 7th level over the course of one grand, connected adventure.

My background?: I used to run Marvel Superheroes and 3.5 D&D for our gaming group, both tabletop and pbp, but we've all grown up and moved to different parts of the country, so that's not really possible anymore. Though I play Pathfinder now, I've never run a game with this system, so I might need a bit of patience if I make any mistakes. Feel free to point them out…but be kind. :D

My goal? I want to work with the players to tell an exciting and fun story using the PF1e rules, with Core classes and races only, really going for a “Classic Fantasy” game feel. I know this might not work for everyone, but that’s why there’s so many different game recruitments on the boards, right? Something for everyone.

********

Character Creation Summary
System:
Pathfinder 1E
Starting Level:
First Level
Ability Scores:
20 point buy
Races:

Skills:
Background skills
Feats:
Elephant in the Room
Traits:

Wealth:
Class average wealth for Level 1
Hit Points:
Max at first level, Rolled or Average every level thereafter (whichever is better)
Religion
Standard Golarion
Background:
2-3 paragraphs minimum. None of the characters will be from Belhaim, and the opening will be that they are traveling with a caravan to the town, possibly acting as guards for what turned out to be a rather uneventful, boring trip.
Posting Expectations:
I’ll hope for one post each weekday and one on the weekend, though in reality I’ll ask for a minimum of four posts a week.

********

I’ll be accepting 5 or 6 characters, depending on the mix and number of applications and will be aiming for a reasonably balanced group…though we’ll see how that works out. I’ll leave this recruitment open until Wednesday, April 6th at 11:59pm EST.

Soon.

GM Minotaur: Once you have the official recruitment thread up, will you be posting a link here for us?

Yes. :)

Sorry for the delay, which will be a bit longer than I'd like. Real life OT at work is interfering with this launch. Suffice it to say, I'll post a recruitment as soon as I can reasonably set it up and be able to give it my full attention.

I'd be willing to allow (1) Archetype (still only using Core classes) per character.

As in, if a character multi-classes, only one of the classes can have an archetype. Nor could you have different archetypes with different levels.
(An odd idea, I thought, but I saw someone mention allowing it in their home game, on a message board.)

Wow. Quite a bit of interest. Sweet.
I'll get to work on the *official* recruitment post and setting the game up. :D

- Unchained versions of classes and alternate racial traits WILL be allowed. No occult or psionic classes, however.

- Will be taking 5 or 6 characters, depending on the mix and interest level.

- Characters will start at first level and a point buy of 20. Starting wealth will be average.

- Max Hit Points for first level. Rolled after that, or half, whichever is better.

- Characters get 2 traits and I'll allow a drawback, but will expect it roleplayed.

- No EVIL characters.

********

So, that's my sales pitch. Whattaya' think? Would there be any interest in this?

Kingmaker, absolutely.

Backing out on this. Time constraints, as well as not really being into playing a mutant exclusive game.

Have fun and Happy New Year!

Whoa. Used to LOVE this game back in the day.
Would definitely be interested...though, same question as Waskally.
Homemade heroes or pre-gens? Also, mutant exclusive or...?

Definitely going with Bard. More details later. (At work...yay OT...)

Seriously interested. Adventuring on a whole new frontier!
Since this tickles me on an old-school level, I'm going to go with the rolls and work on a submission from there:

4d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 4, 5) = 19 (-4) 15
4d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 5, 6) = 16 (-1) 15
4d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 5, 3) = 10 (-1) 9 *DROP*
4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 3, 4) = 16 (-3) 13
4d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 4) = 18 (-4) 14
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1, 2) = 10 (-1) 9
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3, 4) = 13 (-1) 12

15, 15, 13, 14, 9, 12

Hmmm. Can definitely work with this spread though I may rearrange it.
Will be back soon with a character and details soon... Leaning towards an Arcanist, I think.
