The orc is looking at the party as it converse and then points to the rations. And then to the wild boy with it. He growls again and gives the boy a stern look.

I hope you guys don't mind if I make some changes to the module as you don't seem like a bunch of murderhobos to me and I think that you would enjoy them.

The green creature growls at Quina and then growls some more this time at the sky. He scuffs at the party and opens his mouth pointing at it and then points at his right hand that that is on top of one of the daggers. He proceeds to look at the party with an angry gaze.

Preception 10:

When the orc was gesturing you something you clearly focused on the important things. The sound! It seemed like there was a sound of growling when he looked into the sky. But opposed to the others you identify that the sound is coming from the belly of the creature and not from his mouth.

I'm okay - i'll be honest I was gming a game for a few friends and got a bit burned out so I didn't post here.

As Staci pushes the pitchfork into a push something as green as a turtle Qina was thinking of yet far larger jumps out a bush. It appears to be an orc that is not very pleased by the pointy pitchfork that appeared out of nowhere.

Confused he is looking around around at the party members not sure what is going on.

His torso is covered in a worn leather armour (clearly visible form the scratches all over it) and one could assume that the armour continues downwards to the legs that are hidden in the brush as we speak. He does not have any weapons in his hands at the moment but you can clearly see a few daggers strapped on the chest of his armour. And it would be safe to assume that little daggers isn't everything a creature of his stature would be armed with.

Yo, you guys have a surprise round on this orc as he was clearly having a nice snack or something before you started to point daggers erm, pitchforks at him. You could also try to converse with him as he does not appear to mean harm for now as he is still confused by the events.

I have added a map into the campaign description so please position your characters and then we an go on.

Initiatives for the creatures in the bush:

Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 17
Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 3
Initiative: 1d20 ⇒ 10

The party is approaching their place they chose to rest. There is a big alder along with a few bushes with the forest expanding behind them. There is also a tree trunk lying on the ground. It seems as travellers or someone else frequents this as a resting place as it is clearly visible that the ground is as hard as the one on the trail.

Preception 10:

You hear some odd grunting coming from a batch of bushes that are located a few meters away from the the area where you wanted to rest.

Please roll initiatives. Also how would you like to handle combat? Theatre of mind or do you want me to upload maps?

I'm sorry for not posting for long guys I have to deal with my last exam tomorrow. I'll just add the map in the meantime.

Wooooooooo! Thanks tburke!

A small tent is listed twice, as the 1st item and the 3rd. Are there two small tents or is one supposed to be something else? Also, the "waterskin that is pleasantly cold on touch", is that something special or a 2nd full waterskin?

Woah! Nice catch, going to edit that right away.. Nah it's just a waterskin filled with, well cold water. I just wanted to add in a bit of flavor. EDIT: Never mind my edit timer has ran out. There should be just one water skin.

After talking to the townsfolk and her party the mayor places his palm on Qina's shoulder and looks towards the city gates.
"Just head south and use the map. It should take you two days at most to get to the crypt. He puts his palm off Qina's shoulder and fixes the collar on his dark red ceremonial dress as he looks back to the townsfolk.

"Now then Kessan's people! Our heroes shall leave so let us prepare a glorious feast for when they return!

He would raise his hands and the crowd would erupt in cheers once more clapping and giving the heroes their best wishes.

[OOC] For some reason I was not able to get the spoilers to work in other backpacks so it will be separated from the rp with the lines.

The mayor lets out a hearty chuckle.
"Do you think Kessan ventured into battle with leisure? No young ones you do not get to take Miranda with you, I am sorry but she has to stay here." The mayor would pat the pony and then give a serious look to the brave adventurers.

"But. You do get some basic supplies that should aid you along the way. First of all here is something that will help you get to the crypt itself. And something so we can make sure that you survive along the way"

The mayor would hand every single one of them a piece of map and with it drop a big backpack that is at least half full into their laps.
He would then give them a look of empathy.

"Carry what you have with caution. And be careful as even the journey itself to the crypt already should prove to be challenging so be weary as the crypt is could be far more dangerous then the journey. Now go forth young heroes! Make your way onwards and bring us the flame that shall keep the city warm trough the winter!"

With that he pushes a silver lantern into the hands of the heroes and the town folk start cheering at their heroes.

Map pieces:

If the heroes piece together the maps they form a full map that leads them to the crypt.

As instructed you are making your way toward the town square as the bells atop the Temple of Erastil toll their afternoon song, echoing throughout the quiet town of Kassen. As the peals begin to fade, the first of the townsfolk make their way into the square, dressed in black, as if attending a funeral. They slowly fill the square, moving quietly across the cold, hard ground, their eyes downcast and mournful. After a few moments, a murmur passes through the crowd as it slowly parts to let Mayor Uptal through. He leads the way with a tarnished silver lantern. Behind him, an old pony drags a cart laden with backpacks and supplies.

Once he reaches the center of the crowd, Mayor Uptal stops and calls out to the assembled townsfolk. “Once again the winter winds blow through the Fangwood, marking the end of another harvest. There are wolves in the woods, howling at our walls, and serpents in our shadows, waiting to strike. Just as it was one hundred and seventy-four years ago, when Kassen himself left these walls to protect us, so it is today. Where are the heroes? Where are the brave folk that will venture out to Kassen’s tomb and retrieve the flame to keep this community safe for another winter?”

Finishing his speech the mayors eyes begin searching for a few specific individuals in the crowd.

Alright putting you guys in the action!

You would be correct. Which also shows how much the rest of us pay attention. Too distracted my cookies.

We can say that a day passed by and you are already going to the ceremony or if you guys want to do some "training" just in case a day before hand we could also do that.

The mayor would pull a handkerchief out of the breast pocket on his blue attire and wipe the sweat off his forehead. "Ah yes, the crypts citizens to say so. Well none of those who completed this test speak of them fondly. Spiders, rats of unnatural size and sometimes swarms of bats. But some say that there is more that lies in the crypt. Something so vile that those who saw it do not wish to be reminded of it in any way! But, ehem, I am not the one who should be worried here. That should be the job of the townsfolk." The mayor snatches a cookie from the silver plate that they are on and eats it in one bite. Fianlly finishing the cookie he begins to speak once more. "Now I have business to do so I shall make my exit now. Help yourselves with the cookies, my wife made them, and I shall see you tomorrow at noon on the festival." already openening the door and looking to make his exit he adds: "Oh, and about the flame. You are the ones carrying it so you should light it. If you manage to bring it back that is."
The last part was added just as he stepped trough the door without looking at the party left in the dining room with a few cookies still on the silver plate.

Sense motive DC 12:

The mayors behaviour when asked about the creatures was odd. He has never displayed this sort of emotion in public as he never seemed to have to sorry since the townsmen lifestyle is quite peaceful without any trouble going on.

Knowledge local DC 5:

It is a commonly known fact that the mayors wife has no idea how to cook as she was risen very poorly. What a big fat lying pig the mayor is. He doesn't want to tell you where he got the delicious cookies from!

Okay just to clarify only skill check that have low dcs and are common (read: perception and sense motive) will be included in spoilers.

"Correct. The torch in the marketplace is lit by the very same fire that lies I. The crypt of Kessan. The founder of our town. The everflame in our market has to be refreshed every few years as it is not the torch of everflame origin. So you should go down into the crypt and try to retrieve it the flame in a lantern so we can relit the torch for the next few years." Cough.
The mayor would now cross his arms and give them a look of doubt.
"As the crypt is visited rarely there is a high possibility that the crypt is inhabited by some, well, 'unplesant' creature. This is why we would need you to bring some arms with you as the task will be not a cake walk. The journey to the crypt itself should be a challenge and a bonding experience to all of you. But more I can not tell you as it is still you who have to partake in becoming men and women as we shall use this opportunity to determine if you are worth of such titles. "

"The ceremony begins tomorrow at noon and you should come there carrying only your necessities. The townsmen and women will bring provide you with the basic rations and supplies so worry mostly about armor and weapons - or spell complnents if you require any."

"Now any questions?"

Okay seems like I'll use the spoilers version so it doesn't drag out. I will use it in a limited manner tho so if I give a spoiler for DC10 on perception there might be something else your character notices if you roll a 15.

"Come child, sit." The mayor rises form the chair - revealing his fat pineapple-ish structure - and gestures Gurcich to take his place in the chair.

[i] cough [/cough] "Children. This is what you shall be called today." He would carefully glare over every present person "But men and women, is what you will be called in a few weeks.
I have called you here to discuss the Everflame festival with you. I know that have probably seen one - at least ate at some of the feasts"
he would look at Gurcich "But every few year we don't just eat and feast as a celebration. Tell me children. Do you even know what 'the everflame' is?

Please take a look at the discussion part before continuing the rp.

Before we go on I would just like to clear up a few things about how I will handle skill checks.

In the only pbp that I have participated in the GM described the scenery and then there was for example

Preception DC 10:

And everything that you would see as if you rolled 10 perception would be inside of the spoiler.

Now I think that this is a counter intuitive method and I am not sure if it is the norm to use a system like that but I shall avoid it. As from my observation all this ended up bringing was a lot of the players just "taking 10s" so they could use the spoiler information.

I also think that it takes away from the creativity and makes the roleplaying more like a chose your own adventure type book.

Also if anyone has any suggestions or any kind of feedback/criticism please do post it here.

The inside of the building is as dull as the outside. A plain Hall with a gigantic long dining table in the center of the room. Yet there is a 'nom, monn, nom, nom, nom' sound comming from the table. It suddenly stops and a cough comes from the same spot. The mayor sits there and appears to be feasting on some good.
He looks to the party.
"Early are you? Well I guess I will have to share the cookies with you now. Come take a seat. We have matters of importance to discuss"
The mayor nudges them to sit at the chairs on the other side of the table.

It will probably be fine:)
I'll update the gameplay section every few posts.

The wind gusts on your face as you are headed toward the town hall.

You know the town hall. You’ve seen it a thousand times. Every weekend there is some kind of a celebration being held here. Be it one of Haskors – the local smiths – daughters getting married, a community feast, midsummer festival, first harvest festival, last harvest festival you could go on. But today is a workday and you expect the building to looks different. The big wooden doors should closed and there will be no ornaments on the wooden walls that would get you in the spirit of celebration. No drunk bards attempting to sing, no barmaids running around with mugs full of beverage.

You can already make out the town hall and it truly does look plain. But you didn’t come here to admire its plainness. You’ve received word from the mayor that you should meet him today in the town halls dining room. You can suspect that it has something to do with the ever inevitable test of maturity that you will have to partake in sooner or later. It would also be a good guess that you weren’t the only one who would end up being called here.

Ah, the guess was correct - as you are approaching the entrance your eyes catch sight of an 3 other younglings coming toward the hall it would be quite possible that they are here to meet the mayor – just as yourself.

Hello guys,

First of all I owe you an apology. I've something that should stay off the internet happen to a close friend of mine that really shook me up and I couldn't get myself to even post here. So without further ado as my apology i'm finally opening up the game play section.

I'll start up the gameplay section once I get out of school so at a maximum of 8 hours from now.

Statice Blue 'Staci' Portrow wrote:

I put a short paragraph about meeting Gurcich into Staci's background.

"But at times she couldn't take it, the work, her marginal social status, the tension at home. In those times she ran into the woods for peace and rejuvenation. She found a natural kinship and deep understanding with the animals there, mostly rodents, birds, or deer -- but once she shared a few everlasting breaths looking at a unicorn. Another time she met a wolf and its boy, Gurcich.

Gurcich wasn't like anyone else that she'd ever met. Simply direct in the way of animals, he gave her another perspective on nature, the predator's outlook, tempered with an inherent humanness, that merely needed a little coaxing to draw out. "

S'ok?

Lantern, is it ok to reflavor the trident as a heavy pitchfork?

Sure thing!

Here you go. A brand new and totally not used pitchfork.

Okay guys sorry it took so long.

1.) Items
I would prefer if we could do it purely from core rulebook and yes that does exclude a lot of consumables but as I have states for story reasons you will probably only be starting with a your weapons & armour. The adventure will begin 1 day before the ceremony and you will receive a visit from the mayor that will call you all to a meeting and explain the quest to you. I shall save the story for the gameplay part but in between that he will ask you to "bring with you only necessities". You can decide then on your own what is a necessity for your character and bring that with yourself.
The core rulebook still contains all of the core things like basic travelling supplies. You may use the day if you wish to try to find buy some magical supplies around the town but they probably won't come cheap & easy.

2.) Town
First of all let's tackle the population. The town is populated by around 500 citizens most of them being humans and a decent bunch of halflings and elves. There are about 3 families of dwarves that chose an axe over a pickaxe (but one of them called Braggar opend up a smiths shop) and a few half-orcs and half-elves can be found in the shadows of the city as they tend to not show themselves a lot. All of the buildings in the town are made from wood with the exception of the Temple (number 4 on the map) dedicated to Erastil. Along the temple a local smith by the name of Renet has set up a shop in the town squre (number 6), the towns guard also has their HQ here (number 5) where you can find the only man who is dedicated to his work in his town - Capitan Wisslo. Of course there is also the town hall (number 2) were most of the celebrations take place. The north side of the town over the river is considered the "weird" part of the town.

If you want any specific info on the town please say so ^^

I'll be answering these in the evening today so I hope that's not too late. Just to let you know I'm having a busy weekend and won't be able to post much. It should all calm down by Thursday tho.
Basicly you don't want any other items then then your weapons and your armor. I'll explain as to why and the more about the village in the evening.

Well it at least gets rid of two of my negative modifiers so I'm good with that. Appreciate it. Hopefully this means I'll roll above average during the adventure.

Looks like you have a decent character now. It's the excitement of rolling up a character that gives charm to the party and the PCs. So trust in your dice! Or take 20.

Nickadeamous wrote:

Howdy. I've fairly open to making whatever is needed so I wanted to see what people were making and I'm assuming its a good aligned party.

Well, it ain't great but it could be worse.

Hey man, you can reroll the lowest two scores at the price of rerolling the highest one and then decide which of the scores you want to keep. So you can reroll the two 8s but you also have to reroll the 14 (this is a house rule that I just invented today at a face to face game - if you don't like it please say so and we can just do a normal reroll but it seems to me like it keeps the power level in check so you don't go from "ok hero" to "howdoyoudosomuchdmg hero").

Also it's great to see you guys already working out the back stories and strategies! When you have your characters done i'll open up the gameplay section.

Are we playing iron man (scores in order as rolled) or may we arrange them to suit?

If iron man, then my PC looks like a sorcerer, maybe a wizard.

If we're arranging scores, then I can play anything to fit the party.

Nah. Arrange them in any order you want:)

Corsario wrote:

Dotting!

So... Level 1. No traits, as they are no "Core", right?

Yup! Just finished writing the character creation process on the discussion part.

There should be a tab in the top part of the forum that can lead you to the "discussion" part.

Greetings! The following section will be dedicated to two things:
1.) First of all you shall create you characters by rolling dice here and provide bit of background on them.
2.) Afterwards this part can be used to discussed for OOC matters say someone is going on a week long vacation, just post here to notify us it will not be a problem ^-^

Character creation:

First let's tackle the metagame part. Your character should be made solely from material provided in the core rulebook. Meaning the viable races are: Human, Half-Orc, Half-Elf, Halfling, Dwarf, Elf, Gnome. As for the classes there are: Bard, Barbarian, Ranger, Paladin, Fighter, Wizard, Sorcerer, Cleric, Rogue, Monk and Druid.
I think that randomness adds excitement to the character creation so we are going to use roll 4d6 drop the lowest to assign ability scores and then roll for the starting wealth (if you can explain in your background as to why your character should be richer then we may rearrange the starting wealth for you).
Remember guys this means vanilla so no traits ^^

Now let's tackle the background. The adventure begins in Kessan as small town in the Nirmathas region. The characters should be young and hail from the city as they are about to undertake a test of maturity. The town itself is a rather small with a close knit community that is lead by the mayor Uptal. Most of the people are woodcutters (they even boast a guildhall within the town) but there are also some that make use of the Tourondel River that flows trough the northern part of the city by catching fish.
The local is called "Seven Silvers" that is ran by a kind innkepper Trelvar Silver. A temple dedicated to Erastil is located in the town square but accepts anyone who wishes to pay his respect to the local or to another deity.
Once a year after the harvest ends a ceremony happens where the towns youth has to re-enact the heroic acts of Kessan - founder of the town - by entering his tomb to retrieve a piece of the everflame that keeps his resting place warm.
This is the map of your home town. If you want information on any of the buildings or anything else about the town please do say so.

I would prefer to do it solely on the core rules (no pfs), so the current list and "this time for real" is:
-Ira Koll
-Corsario
-therealthom
-Narad (?)

Please confirm your participation by doting or creating a character at the gameplay discussion section.

Or let us rather do it this way.
Please speak out if you would like it to be ran as a PFS Core scenario or a normal module using only the core ruleset.

Yes, you can run it as a PFS game. But, that's totally your prerogative! :-) Happy to help you if I can; happy to let it be if you want to run it as a home brew.

Here's one example of how this module was run with a PFS hook. (The sample post that I reference starts with: "Good news, everyone!")

Thanks for the great example. This has convinced me to try to run this as a PFS Core campaign. I will try to do my best as to GM it and I think that I have an idea of how to give you guys a hook.

I will have to ask you for help once the thing is finished when it comes to filling out the chronicle sheets and reporting the game.

So to sum it all up; I was thinking of accepting 4 players using PFS Core rules. This contains The Core rulebook, traits web enchantment and PFS Guide. Before you accept my quest I would like to warn you that I have never GMed a pbp adventure before so I hope it will be at least decent when it comes to quality.
I have made a list of players as to who I would take in if they want to play if you have any objection of do not want to play please do send me a message.

Current players:
Narad
Ira kroll
Corsario
nightdeath
Nohwear

If everyone is okay with that please do say as I will open up a new thread where I would like you to link me the sheets of your characters first.

It would just be a whole lot more conformable for me if we could do it this way. If you guys want to play it as PFS I'll have to check if we can even do that but from the replies I'll assume that it is possible.

Edit: to be specific I do not like that as a GM I would be limited by some of the PFS rules say modifying some things so it fits the party.

Edit2: okay from what I can make out Ira Knoll and Corrsario would be interested running it even if it's not PFS correct? What about the others?

GM Lantern: You can totally do play-by-post games as PFS. :-) I'm a PFS Venture Officer and could help you with game reporting and chronicle sheets, if need be.

I totally understand if you'd rather not stick with the PFS format. However, I think I'd be out if you ran it as a home brew. While there's something to be said for the old-school randomness of 4d6, the odds exist that there could be huge power disparities between characters. At first level, I find that unpalatable. (However small those odds might be, they exist.)

Where I'm coming from: I've both played and run Crypt of the Everflame. I like the idea of the CORE system for PFS credit because I think it would make it much more challenging! That is: "Can I still survive a very challenging module if I voluntarily limited myself to this subset of material?"

Oh I knew that you can do pbp PFS I just wasn't sure if you can do cryp of the ever flame as PFS. If you would be willing to help with the reporting that would help a lot. Hello there PbP forum!

I was wondering if you people would be interested in participating in one of the classic pathfinder modules, Crypt of the Everflame.

I would be hosting it for 3-4 players and the preferred post ratio would be 1/day as this is also the one that I can keep up with.

The plot should stay as it is meaning that PCs are from Kassen and I would like to focus primarily on the Core rules as I am not really a veteran in the pathfinder world and do not have much experience with other books.

Is there still space? Then I would like to play as Kyra.
Just a word of warring. This would be my first pbp.
