congrats on the coming nuptuals, Bearington! Have a wonderful wedding and enjoy the honeymoon!

got mine too

Monolith map & handout

1) What were the three best things that helped you learn in GM 101?
... a)learning how to use google drive
... b)proper paper work (ie chronicles)
... c)do spoilers for info like skill check results and how to nest spoilers

2) Any special revelations in your journey?
... That I can do it! That I definitely need some refinement in my online GM skills... I've been GMing since 1974 and I do pretty well face to face, at least my players tell me so, and I ran on irc for many years as well, but it's very different in a forum style pbp!

3) What are you going to run as your first adventure?
... Not sure yet... won't have time til after the convention end of May... but I'm thinking House of Harmonious Wisdom if it's okay to run that pbp. Just played it yesterday ftf, and LOVED it!

Monolith map & handout

tbh all the chronicles I've gotten at ftf AND pbp games have just the gm portions filled in, leaving the rest for the player to fill in... may not be right, but that's the standard I've seen.

Monolith map & handout

yw!

Monolith map & handout

link sharing s/b on now, sorry

Monolith map & handout

hmmm... I put in the new link... at least I thought I did... When I click the link in the post above, it takes me to the new chronicle. I'll try it again....

Try this link - let me know if it doesn't work.

Monolith map & handout

i'LL fix it and re-load it into the drive.. thanks...

... and done! (see previous post, which has been edited)

Monolith map & handout

Here's Choon's chronicle... did I do it right? I didn't put down some of the info because tbh, none of my online chronicles have had that info filled out for me (chronicle #, starting xp, pp, gold)... should I have done that? If so, let me know and I'll change it. Easy enough to do.

EDIT: The above link is now to the updated chronicle... should be complete now...

Monolith map & handout

Hmm - I have a question for you about the reporting part of things. The page of the module where you would have all the players fill things out at a ftf game has requests for gm info... character number for example - is that for which character you are applying your own credit to? And underneath the list of factions for the gm's character, there are boxes with the letters A,B,C and D... what are those for?

Monolith map & handout

Imojin isn't buying anything.

Monolith map & handout

Here is my info:

player: JAF0
Character: Imojin
pFS#: 52335-20
faction: liberty's edge
day job: none
init prestige: 2
initial fame: 4
gold: 916
xp: 2

Monolith map & handout

If we each make our own event, and we're only making one chronicle (or two) and reporting one (or two) players, will it still be considered a valid table? or should we have one blanket event id for the whole thing? I'm confused.

Monolith map & handout

rolling is fine with me.

Monolith map & handout

wow... I was getting no updates for this thread... glad I saw your post in Flaxseed, referring to this one... much more to read than just the last couple, I see.

Monolith map & handout

ah ok... np

Monolith map & handout

Hmm - thanks for your input on the Monolith segment... all comments so far have been helpful, yours included, and I will take all to heart next time I run a pbp! (or face to face for that matter).

No comments on my replies to the GM scenarios?

Monolith map & handout

oh my... how would -I- handle these situations? Those are hard! give me easy ones! lol okay - never mind... saw what Choon got... mine were easy in comparison.. here goes:

low level play is boring:

I would explain to the player in pm that he cannot create a high level character for pfs play, the character must start at 1st lvl and play up to that level... however! I would not turn the player away, I would offer the player the option of playing a pregen 7th lvl character, and explain how credit is applied, but he must have an appropriate level character to apply the credit to, so he'd have to hold onto the credit until his character reached appropriate level. I'd refer him to the pfs player reference document (and give him a link to download it) for backup to my explanation, and tell him he is still welcome to play with the group of course, but as a pregen.

As an alternative, if he's not willing to play a pregen, I'd apologize that pfs does not have another alternative that might enthuse him, and suggest if he refuses the pregen option, that he check the recruitment boards for non-pfs games that offer play for higher level characters, as such games do get formed regularly.

what's the mission again:

This one is tougher, as it's not easy to get folks on track if they don't 'get it' even after restating the mission to them, or referring them to initial scenario documents. I'd try to do it in an 'organic' sort of way, by having an npc restate it for them in a different way, or maybe a note from their vc who sent them on the mission in the first place... maybe they need a sort of sideways push to get back in the groove?
If worst comes to worst, and only as a final resort, I would tell them ooc in the discussion board what they need to do next. but that would only be a desperation move, when all else has failed, I think.

Monolith map & handout

good idea, thanks!

Monolith map & handout

thank you, ofanything. yes, remembering to spoiler information for investigative approaches is something I will have to work on and remember to do. it would save time and frustration.

Not sure what I need to improve other than that... I guess transitions could use some work, as I found them a bit awkward, not sure when to push and when not to... it's easier at a face to face table, as it's easier to sense player moods and everyone is reacting at the same time.

Anyway - any constructive criticism and encouragement are welcome.

Monolith map & handout

so um... feedback on monolith? I know there were a few rough patches... but some overall feedback would be welcome.... thanks

Monolith map & handout

Herald stands on the lid of the well, and though it shudders from time to time, his weight combined with the lid itself seems to be enough to prevent any more morlocks from exiting the well... so far.

Erasmus casts grave words on a skull...

gm dice:
grave words: 1d100 ⇒ 14

The skull babbles for about a minute, but fails to say anything relevant that you don't already know... 'monsters in the deep, claws, fangs, death'...

Erasmus listens to the skull babble on while rifling through the satchel found under the bones... inside he finds a few spent tindertwigs, some metal shavings, a pair of hammers, one heavy and small and light, some tongs, and a pot labeled 'glue' in common, with a simple alchemical sign for glue stamped in the wax seal.

Herald casts detect magic and sees nothing show up glowing to his enhance vision.

wormling aids in the searching and finds a few more bones in a corner, but nothing new or exciting.

Mathos inscribes the symbol of Gorum's eye into the lid of the well. The lid flares with light as he finishes the last line of the glyph and seems to seal itself to the well... There are a few screams from below and a bit more banging on the underside of the lid, but it no longer shakes or wobbles... it seems quite fully sealed to the well.

******

Having completely searched the final chamber under the monolith, the party returns to Dunhob. Meeting with Dr. Q, the party notices that he seems a bit distracted, not unusual for him, but he IS excited about what you've learned... "Perhaps this eye symbol will prove useful to you in further investigations... Keep that in mind, please, as you explore more strange doings in the Hungry Mountains... it might protect you. Now, best you get some food and sleep... and we can speak again after you are well-rested."

*****

Back at the Sage and Mug, folks are devastated to learn the probably fate of their old smith and ask if you've brought his remains for proper burial. Mindl is so happy to see you all, she almost drops a whole tray of drinks as she rushes them to your table... "I'm so glad you came back! I was so worried... That monolith is a dangerous place... folks who go there usually don't come back. Now what can I get you to eat?" she asks this last as she sets out a couple of pitchers of ale and mugs for all.

As Herald pokes through the bones, he spots a few items... A satchel, a heavy leather belt with some tools hanging from loops in it(a hammer, some tongs) and underneath that, a gilded breatplate with a canine heraldic symbol.

know local or nobility, dc 10 (so anyone can roll, even untrained:
The symbol is of a lesser Ustalavic family

The lid shudders a bit as if something below were trying to move it.

Monolith map & handout

Mathos, the bones are a mix of types, but most of them look large enough to be human...

heal check dc 12:
The majority of the bones are human (or humanoid at least)

Monolith map & handout

for Mathos, who successfully identified the Gorum's Eye earlier, dc 15 know arcana, history or religion:

Inscribing the symbol on the lid might ward off the evil below.

You have a pile of bones remaining, a heavy lid that may or may not hold and news to report to dr. Quolorum. What do you do now?

Monolith map & handout

Herald tries to move the lid, and his back twinges in pain as he makes the attempt... it doesn't budge.

Anyone standing near the well can look down and see a carpet of bodies down below,... more, many more morlocks with clawed hands and fanged mouths sleep below, but one is just stirring and beginning the climb up the well...

str check Elena: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (18) + 3 = 21

Elena makes her way over to the lid, and with all her strength is still unable to lift it, but she does get it to roll away from the roll, and with some wobbly movements, directs it over toward the well.

*****

str check Elena: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

Elena rolls the lid another 5' toward the well... and the morlock climbs higher, babbling softly in undercommon.

*****

str check Elena: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

It sounds like it might be doing itself some harm, but the lid doesn't budge.

*****

You have a covered well, a pile of bones and news for Dr. Quolorum. What do you do now?

Just as the morlock reaches the top of the well, Elena arrives with the heavy lid, which she drops into place over the well opening with a deafening thud as it covers the hole completely. There is a scream of outrage and pain from the morlock, whose clawed, grasping hands had just reached the lip of the well...

*****

The morlock slams itself against the lid, trying to dislodge it.

str check: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

The morlock's efforts seem to have no affect.

Monolith map & handout

The lid doesn't budge when Fran tries to move it... She thinks it will take someone far stronger... or maybe multiple people working together.

Monolith map & handout

As Mathos maneuvers into position, Uzziah takes a swipe at him with her club.

gm dice:
to hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19dmg if hits: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

the club connects but does minimal damage, leaving Mathos with little more than a bruise... 3 points of dmg, Mathos

Mathos follows this up with a powerful strike that renders Uzziah stunned for a moment, then her eyes roll back in her head and she drops off the wall, falling in a heap at Mathos and Elena and Gulch's feet..

----
COMBAT OVER.

You can all hear what sounds like stirring down the well and a voice muttering in a strange language.

Reminders: You have a pile of bones around the well opening, a large stone lid leaning against the eastern wall, and something moving below.

Just a heads up. I will be leaving Thursday morning for a 4-day retreat at the beach that lasts til Sunday afternoon, then I have a Sunday night concert to attend. I will take my computer with me, but I may not be able to post much til after I get home.

Hopefully this will section will be finished by thursday morning, but we shall see...

On Monday, my dog goes into surgery and when he returns home on Tuesday, I will be on a full-time home care regimen with him. He needs to be walked with a belly band whenever he needs to relieve himself or get up to get a drink or eat, so it will be a busy time. (He's an almost 100 lb st. bernard puppy, so he can't be carried for these things).

I'll be able to post regularly again starting Monday, but perhaps not as frequently as usual for a while.... Anyway, sorry in advance for any lack of posting on my part. I will do the best I can.

Monolith map & handout

ELena: *ding ding ding* (ie it detects as evil)

Uzziah leaps at Elena, attacking her in mid-leap, screaming all the while... but the attack doesn't come close to hitting the holy warrior...But before she (yes Uzziah is a 'she', but it's hard to tell by looking at her) can even attack, Herald steps forward the minute she shows her hand, and thumps her soundly. When her leap is finished, she ends hanging from the wall, almost like a tree frog, she seems to have the ability to hang from the vertical surface by one hand and her toes, even with one hand holding her club.

gm dice:
attack Elena: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
dmg if hits: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

After her attack, Gulch steps forward and barely hits her, leaving a nasty wound. She shakes her head as if almost stunned.

know nature dc 12+:
The creature is a morlock, if you roll higher than 12 in increments of 5, you may ask specific questions about it, so 1 for 17, 2 for 22 and so on.

If you made the nature dc of 12+ and have linguistics, you may roll it, with a successful linguistics dc of 12, you may read the following:

Spoiler:
Morlocks only speak undercommon

When the party pauses and begin to speak, the creature smiles broadly and begins to speak aloud as well, in a strange language.

undercommon:
"HELLO! WELCOME TO MY DOMAIN! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? MY HOME THIS IS!"

sense motive 15:
The creature is being overly loud, like she's trying to sound an alarm.

Monolith map & handout

The creature tilts its head at Rhasuel's words, shakes its head emphatically...

No sense motive roll needed: It does not understand what you said... It takes a couple of steps back.... effectively doesn't change location on the map, just being wary 'in place'

A broad well with low sides plunges into the middle of this large chamber. A heavy iron cover leans against the east wall. Near the well, a mound of gnawed bones, scraps of clothing and discarded possessions speak to some unholy feast. From deep within the well rises the found sound of scratches, scrapes, and breathing.

As you observe the well, you see a gnarled pair of hands grip the sides of the well and pull up a twisted, wizened humanoid form... He/she/it doesn't immediately attack as it leaps to its feet at the side of the well...
