"You are not behaving," Rations chides the overgrown tengu bully. He snaps his flail toward the ogre hook in Katsu's hands. Then he snaps the flail toward Katsu's knees once more. Then he raises his shield to defend himself from the--hopefully fully foiled--oni tengu.

"Fiendish epicurean," Rations notes as he peruses the diary. "It casts an even more ominous shadow upon the purpose for this blackmarket creature trade. I can understand Sakura's outrage."

After Boris cracks open the chest and the ladle's properties are identified, the albino tengu eyes it with envy.

Several rooms later...

A sharp hiss escapes Ration's beak upon discovering the profane tableau. After speaking a prayer for the fellows' souls, he offers the restless spirits what advice he can on coming to terms with the inevitable and senseless twists and turns a mortal fate can take. "It may often not be fair--the innocent are sometimes punished, and the unrighteous far too often reap great reward--but it is the price we pay to experience the many wonders of life. Be grateful for the joys you found and leave behind the suffering, take only beautiful memories with you into the river of souls."

Rations climbs onto the bed and carefully balances toward the sneak. Squinting through the dust, he strikes out with his flail at the sword in the other tengu's hand.

Rations heads into the room. He slips on the waxed floor, falling on top of Huang Tong. "Apologies!" He crawls off the kobold so that he can get to his feet.

Rations tries to follow the kobolds out without disturbing the inebriated halflings.

"Interesting. A criminal enterprise right under the townsfolk's noses," Rations points out quietly. "Perhaps the mayor's nephews stumbled upon it."

Rations holds a single taloned finger up to his beak.

"Or so I've heard," Rations clarifies. "I don't have any personal knowledge of the Golden League."

"You shouldn't relish in other's pain," Rations chides Boris. "Though I suppose these did not feel much pain." He circles the room, keeping an eye on the other exits.

Rations winces as the clockwork doll's head bites a chunk out of the overconfident amurrun. The white tengu descends into the room and strikes out with his flail before raising his shield.

Rations blinks at Boris' attempt at humor. "This is no way to run a restaurant," he says, tsking as he steps around the pile of rotting fish. "No one has lived here, but so eone has been here recent enough to dump fish that still stinks. It would not surprise me if this smell is not the evil aura that Sakura sensed."

He moves inside to keep an eye out for danger..

Rations stops to survey the property damage once he catches the others. He clacks his beak and shakes his head ruefully in a way that suggests this outcome is not surprising to him. Eventually, he asks, "Maybe we could pause and consider our actions?"

"Boris?" Rations murmurs as the shouts pick up. "That can't be right." He heads towards the shouting.

Rations moves around town speaking with the folk to see if there are any new superstitions related to the area or if anyone complains about neighbors behaving strangely.

Then he walks the town, concentrating on the spiritual world to see if he can sense anything malign.

”No. She has not,” Rations answers the spectacled woman, resting a conciliatory hand upon her shoulder. ”She believes you have knowingly allowed a corrupting influence into the woods and your village. While I’m certain this intrusion is unintentional, she feels it is necessary to seal it away. However, we have been tasked with finding the source of the taint and removing it. If we are successful, she will lift the fog.”

”Thank you, noble forest spirit,” Rations says with a bow to the retreating unicorn.

We do not want to hurt you, but we must defend ourselves to carry out our mission if you persist in your rage."

He then throws his curved club at the kirin in a roundabout way. The club clunks the kirin. Rations draws the other curved club from over his shoulder.

Rations moves closer to his fellow Pathfinders on the log. Once there he exchanges his flail for one of the strange curved clubs on his back. However, before he makes any aggressive moves, he places the back of his hand against Boris' shoulder. The air around Rations smells like fresh cut wheat for a moment.

"Everyone is so far away," Rations mutters to himself.

”Don’t be impuls—oh, good,” Rations says, mostly to himself, as Boris runs toward the fey. He draws his flail from under his robe and tries to follow as fast as he can. ”Fall back a bit to where I can ward you.”

Rations pulls his flail from under his embroidered robe and snaps it at an insectile creature that gets too close for comfort.

"Come my little friends," Rations coos to the skittering nature spirits. "We mean you no harm and come at the behest of Sakura to deal with the taint that drove them to create this fog."

Rations takes his time climbing down from the wagon. He removes his straw hat, bows, and then replaces the hat when he straightens.

"My name is Leiting Zhi Ge," he says. "Now, if you would tell me your name, we would not be strangers. We would be acquaintances, at least, or friends. I do not feel the unholy wound, but that is probably because I am not very experienced in my calling. It is, however, our duty to deal with the source of this mist."

Rations waves a taloned hand at Boris in a pacifying gesture. "Peace. Peace. I'll cook something special when we camp for the night. That will keep your mind off of it."

As the trees crowd around them, Rations whistles the tune to a folk song as best he can.

He lifts the brim of his hat to squint at the growing pack of snowy squirrels. He pauses the cart and gathers a jar and a dish. He moves to the side of the path and sets out a plate of traveling food.

Rations casts a surreptitious, pitying glance at Boris from under the brim of his hat. The tengu refrains from partaking in the sake but is more than happy to engage in storytelling.

"The road is closed, but we are here to, hopefully, open it," Rations says to the caravaners. "We will submit ourselves to the kami."

Potency crystals can be good, sometimes, if the battle lasts more than one turn. :)

The albino tengu gives everyone else an apologetic bowing shrug.

"Manners, Boris. Manners and moderation," Rations says, shaking his head under his straw hat. "If you keep gorging on dumplings, you'll need to roll after the birds."

Rations raises a taloned hand in greeting and nods his head to the rider. "We have. Would you have news of what caused the closure?"

"*Squawk!*" Rations shakes his head and ruffles his white feathers. "Silvertree, yes. Silvertree."

"Our investigation begins at Silverbark? What are the folk there like?" Rations asks.

”Of course, Boris,” the tengu rises and bows to the amurrun. He collects his things and turns to go, then pauses. He turns back and says with a considering drawl, ”Though, on consideration, the Venture-Captain is likely to provide refreshment. That is likely to be tastier than my fare. If we were to wait, we could get to know our new friends.” He gestures with his embroidery hoop toward the two kobolds.

”Well met, indeed,” the white tendu says, cocking his head to observe the kobold directly. ”I am Leiting Zhi Ge, but you may—and will find it easier—to call me Rations.” He chuckles to himself and gazes to the side thoughtfully. He sets down his needle and thread so as to not be rude and returns his attention to Huang Tong.”My companion and I arrived last night. He is off tormenting the sea birds while I await our assignment.”

Oh. Yes. I forgot we were only 4.

A tengu with unusual white plumage, pale beak, and red eyes looks up from his needlework as the two kobolds crash into one another. He observes the pair from under his broad, straw hat. Then he makes a mental notation that two kobolds are quieter than one apparently bored kobold.

The embroidery needle twitches in his talons. Brown thread outlines the shape of a sailing vessel. More complete sections on his robe depict imagery of storms, a white tengu walking a mountain path, a jungle with an orange, prowling cat, and the same distinctive tengu being confronted by the cat.

He glances in the direction of the coast.

Now that I have wrangled my login back from the gremlins, I have a registered character. My son requires me to be a "Bird" for this duo, and I figure he needs a face, but he'll also need healing, so I'm waffling on my build.
