I understand exactly how it works. Negating, Or more precisely controlling, the effect was the whole point. I wanted to make sure I could 'muffle' the light if needed, like a hooded lantern. I'm sure there are spots of light from seams and holes in the cloak, but it keeps me from being 'the big glowing thing'.
"Right, how very thoughtful of you." Devin turns back to the pack animal and begins retrieving the supplies from it. He hands to Gaeron and Kynneth each a 100' rope, a bag of 10 metal pitons, a hammer, 2 balls of twine, 5 torches, and an extra flint and steel. He takes for himself the same plus 2 bags of chalk, 8 empty sacks, and one water skin. He hands the sack with the remaining 5 torches to Hermia. He then wraps his cloak tightly around himself, concealing most of the light, leaving only a narrow shaft spreading out before him. "That should do." and nods to the group as they continue to enter the structure.
"Well we've proved that no one else has been in there. I didn't expect you to be so... 'cheerful' about demolishing someones tomb" as he brushes the debris from his cloak. "So what exactly are we expecting to find inside?" he continues as he comes around to look in the doorway while keeping his distance from the building itself. "At least we don't have to worry about being locked inside," he stares down at the massive doors. I'm assuming that by 'fall inwards' you mean that the doors are now laying on the floor of the crypt, not just that they opened.
Hermia, I'm not trying to railroad anyone into playing or even presuppose anyone's character. I don't want anyone to feel like they have to play a Mage. I just know that of all the classes you don't have that would be the most helpful, and there would be good reason for one to be there. I understand people have real lives and that the game is supposed to be fun and release stress not add more. I would never begrudge anyone's ability to post. As for more players, I leave it up to you all to decide if I just open for submissions of if you can get some other players to confirm that they want to play. If so then I'll post it as closed recruitment.
Gaeron wrote: I always say that the CHARACTER you play should always mean more than the CLASS you are playing. I completely agree. He looks great! I am starting to feel bad about brining this game to a grinding halt. So if someone can confirm one or two other players I will go ahead and open the 'recruitment' thread as an invite only game. Then we can move the conversation there.
Gaeron, I want you to make the character you want to play. But I want to stress there aren't going to be many 'fighting from horseback' opportunities, especially early in the game. I can see it happening later tho. I'm great with you playing a Cavalier if you accept that up front. As for the archetype, I'm saying No because I don't have the book and don't want to set the precedent of playing stuff from books I don't have. As for other players, queue them up and see if they are interested. If so, let me know what their names are and I'll include them in the list when I post the Recruitment thread. I would love to start out with 5 or 6 player that are all high quality and avoid the kind of min/max that we all have seen before.
Looking at the list, we have a Ranger, Cavalier, Bard, and Rogue. That's a good start. I think that a Mage of some kind would complete the party. If anyone knows a player that would like to play a Mage and you would vouch for let me know. I'm comfortable opening the Recruitment thread stating that all the spaces are filled. If you want we could also make room for a cleric of some kind, but i don't think it's as important.
Gaeron: Unfortunately I don't have any of the Ultimate books yet so I hesitate to let people play from them. As for that archtype I'm concerned when you say "I won't be putting very much into the horse" but the description from the pfsrd says "A gendarme trains to be a mounted terror, almost to the exclusion of all other abilities". If you don't plan on taking advantage of these skills, then why choose this archtype? And you are correct, there will be a lot of places that your horse will left behind. If you are OK with that then I'm fine with a Cavalier, but I still question the archtype. Kynneth: A spy would be good for this game but I would caution you to not neglect all of the standard rogue abilities. You may end up missing that trapfinding skill at some point. You might think about a spyish rogue, rather than a rogueish spy. Raventhorn: Looks good. Can you add a block on your profile for the bird's stats so I don't have to look them up seperately? Can't wait to see the flavor for all of these characters. I'll post the Recruitment thread tomorow morning to give you time to get profiles posted. Obviously you don't need to be finished by then, just ready to initially post. Then Raventhorn can have his game back. ;)
Raventhorn: I wasn't really worried about the bird, I was thinking about the exchange between a snooty doorman and a perturbed falconer. "But your... bird simply can not be allowed to come in." "But my bird simply must come in." "But he can't come in!" "But he must come in!" Ah, good times. Hermia: That's fine, I'm sure it will create all kinds of interesting situations ;)
Both would be great. Just make sure you think about how a 'roman style' fighter would act when negotiating a shipping contract. Or how falconer will take it when his bird is denied entry into a dinner party, or worse, becomes the center of attention with all the noble women wanting to 'pet the pretty bird'. Can't wait to see what you come up with.
Hermia: Looks great. Osirani should be fine. While there will be some racial overtones as long as you don't look Qadiran or start preaching the Dawnflower you should be fine. As for a cover story, you don't need to worry about it. Your reason for being there is receiving a letter through a parent or mentor that you trust. You can be starting from Osirion or anywhere else you want, just get your background up to receiving the letter and heading for Almas to catch the ship. Something else i need to clarify in my intro, obviously.
Ok, glad to see everyone is excited. So first some answers. Hermia and Kynneth: A Bard and A Rogue would be awesome. Raventhorn:
As for archetypes, I think they are awesome but choose wisely. I could even see some of them fitting especially well, and some being really out of place. As to playing a fighter, there is no inherent 'minus' in that. I could see, going back to the archetypes, a Mobile Fighter played as a swashbuckler being very effective. I just wanted to make clear up front that it's as likely that you will need to infiltrate a masked ball as it is that you will battle a thieves guild. It's perfect that you bring up Roman ideas, this game was originally set in Mystara (the original DnD game world before Grayhawk) in a country called Karameikos, half of who's population came from a Roman style empire (called Traldar, humm). The country itself was much like Andoran but the political situation was closer to Taldor. When I started reading about Golarion and Taldor I realized that the same plot would fit right into place in this empire. Second, some more clarification. I need to rewrite my intro a bit, to make clear that this is still an Adventuring party. There will still be some 'traditional' adventuring to do. There will also, especially in the beginning, be some very non-traditional things you will be tasked with. I don't want anyone to think there is a negative to playing a fighter, just be prepared up front for not doing a lot of strait up fighting. As for characters, start getting them ready but you don't have to post them here. I just want to give you a head start. After everyone here says they have a character ready, just tell me who they are. Then I'll post the recruitment tread and we can move the conversation over there. What other feedback or questions do you all have? Thanks for all the help and enthusiasm. I was hesitant to propose a political style game, not knowing if anyone else likes playing in them.
OK, so I've decided to start running my own PbP game. I really enjoy this group and I wanted to invite you to play first before I open a general recruitment thread. I'm also hoping to get some feedback on the idea also before I put up my come one, come all post. I hope you have room for another game, because I would really like all of you to play in this if you can. This is a plot that I ran before back in the 2nd ed AD&D days. I have been updating it for PF and Golarion. It fit amazingly well into Taldor and it's politics. === Here is my recruitment thread post === A Tale of Taldor - Golarion PbP Campaign Some may dream of riding the open plain or delving an abandoned dungeon, yet others may yearn for grand battles or conquering an undefeated foe, this is not their story. This is a tale of lies and betrayal, of the insidious and the plotting, of conquest by deception. This is a tale of dueling nobles and waring guilds, of crossed interests and double crossing debutantes. This is a Tale of Taldor, a story of mystery and intrigue. Game Overview: This will be a role-play heavy game with lots of politics and character development. The setting is the political and social catacombs of Taldoran society. While there will be some combat, it may be few and far between. It's possible that the party could go an entire level without a fight. While the party may venture into an ancient forest or explore a dank catacomb, it will be for political or social purpose, not just to plunder. I want to make this clear up front in order to correctly set expectations. Anyone bringing a half-orc barbarian looking to break heads may end up disappointed. However if you have ever wanted to engage in economic guild warfare, manipulate feuding noble families, or explore the mysteries of Taldor zoning permits, this is the game for you. Character Creation: The only 2 requirements are the characters must be of Good alignment and must not be from Taldor. Other than that it's a fairly standard 20 pt buy with 2 traits and anything from Core and the APG allowed. I will say that the core classes are recommended, better a party of Mages and Clerics than Alchemists and Oracles. The Setup: Each perspective party member will receive a letter from a Taldan noble who is an acquaintance of a parent or mentor. It asks them to travel to Almas where they will board a ship for Taldor to meet the noble and discuss a job offer. The party will initially meet on or before the ship, then they will be able to RP on the voyage before arriving and meeting their new benefactor. At which point the actual game would begin. Please post your characters or any questions you may have. After we have enough players I will introduce the setting at the harbor and post the text of the letter. Thank you and welcome to A Tale of Taldor. === End Post === Yes, I did shamefully steal the boat idea from our wagon ride, it worked out so well I couldn't help it. First, who's up for the game? Second, do you have any suggestions or comments on the game concept or my proposed post? I would love to hear your feedback before posting this to a Recruitment thread. I plan on having a party of 5 or 6, so if all of you are available then we may only need to recruit 2 more. If you all have any suggestions of players you know are good, please let me know or direct them to the thread when I start it. Thanks for the feedback and thanks to GMRavethorn for letting me hijack this thread for a bit.
"Rest safely? Absolutely not." He replies to Hermia while also surveying the structure. "I'm assuming that whatever we are hunting is either in here..." he continues while examining the door "or waiting for us to go in so it my trap us inside." Perception on doors: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 "I think that resting safely will only come when we have either returned to town, or have vanquished whatever evil has infiltrated this place. Keep looking around, I'm going to go get the horse, should we need any supplies once we get inside. Don't open anything without me." At that Devin turns and moves back up the path to where the hose was left on the edge of the forest.
As someone who usually plays a rogue, I completely agree with Gareon and Hermia. Most thieves really fit those descriptions. I hope, someday, to get to play my rogue with some of you to show that it doesn't have to be that way. I think you all would like him, at least more than Devin (who is, admittedly, an ass). Phagin, who is currently up on the boards but not in a game, is a CG burglar/con man turned courier. I play him as a face and bit of a swashbuckler. If you all know about any other games that open up and need a non-crappy rogue, please let me know. As for this group, I agree that we don't need a Rogue but since the question was asked I wanted to bring it up as something that we don't have. As for adding any other players, I agree that we need a very high standard. I don't want any competition in upsetting the entire party. ;)
I think that the game is going great and the character RP is wonderful. As for needing another "fighter type", yes it would make things easier but I don't feel outnumbered or set upon. So far Gaeron has done vastly more physical damage than I have (cursed dice i guess). If I remember correctly it was a conscious decision to make things challenging when the Barbarian was not invited to join. I bet once we get a level or two we will be fine.
Devin steps from behind the tombstone, onto the road. He scans the graveyard for any signs of other movement. "Are you all quite finished? Remember that we still have yet to actually find anything here, other than our bony friends." as he kicks at one of the piles of bones on the ground. "With this many guards, I assume at least some of the answers we seek are here. Keep your eyes open and let's get to searching around." Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
