I am currently in the process of revamping Atoms' CS, which is why you guys haven't heard anything definite from me yet on timeskip questions, etc.

I'm sorry it's taking so long! I've been working on it since the announcement that we were continuing, and I'm about halfway through. Atoms will still be the same Atoms you all know, but there are definitely a lot of game changers that you will see.

@Default - About the timeskip
I wouldn't recommend that kind of memory erase for the timeskip. It opens up a lot of plot holes:
- The aliens on the moon have a new containment suit for Atoms, and are still expecting him to do a task for them. Atoms is easily trackable without his suit, and we already know that the aliens are capable of telepathic communication from their base to Earth, so they wouldn't have any trouble contacting him. Plus, if Imagine was really kidnapped, I can't imagine that they wouldn't hesitate to call for Atoms and the rest of The Team's aid.
- Nick and The Defenders were also looking for our friends, both to save them, and to have us help fight against the Givers. Even if North Star somehow managed to erase their memory, he wouldn't of been able to erase Matrix's memory.
- River, Tectonic's sister, would not be happy that she is still gone. She was keeping tabs on all aspects of Tec's life, so she surely knows about The Team, and probably wouldn't hesitate to interrogate us.
- Alleghory, North Star's mentor, would almost certainly investigate his disappearance. The Team would be one of his first stops.
- Hashtag goes to the same school as Imagine, Eldritch, and North Star did. One of the teachers or students would surely inquire about their disappearance. Even if their memory was erased, the school records would still show that there are missing students.
- The family members of our missing teammates, even if their memory was erased, would still have an empty bedroom and other records of someone having lived there with them.

I would rather that our former Teammates are honorably discharged in proper, Masks fashion. They've either decidedly "Perished", "Retired", or became a "Paragon" (see page 118 of the core Masks rulebook). We saved them, and we might still have some form of occasional contact with them, but they've gone their different ways. This would allow for a much more refreshing start, and there are no plot holes this way.

@Wingblade and Hashtag - The Date
Atoms would not be happy about this xD He's protective about Wingblade, and not entirely trusting of Hashtag's badboy persona (thanks to some biases from his police training). Aaand he might be a little jealous/envious too, of course~

I'm thinking for the Positive Experience, Atoms went back to The Defenders and helped them sort out the mess with the Givers, leaving the rest of The Team out. His help was invaluable, and in his eyes, he kept The Team safe from the dangers there. Plus, he earned the respect of The Defenders.

Funny enough, the New 52 Captain Atom was based off of Watchman's Manhattan, who in turn was based off Captain Atom.

Endgame for the former deputy would be him learning how to manipulate subatomic particles other than his own. At that stage he could do all kinds of insanity. Like turn lava into snow, cure cancer, offer to take Wingblade's wings away so she can live a normal life, and make ice cream out of thin air.

As long as Wingblade is around, I'll have a very compelling reason to continue to play Deputy Atoms. Their story is yet to be resolved.

Deputy Atoms, as I may have mentioned before (and should be obvious too), is based off Captain Atom from DC's New52. In the New52, Captain Atom is a former Air Force captain who gains superpowers after agreeing to take part in an experiment that unfortunately goes awry. At first, his powers seem pretty basic; a glowing blue man whose atoms are constantly reforming, who can fly and shoot lasers from his hands; but with each passing issue, and almost with each turning of the page, he gets more and more powerful, discovering new and frightening abilities that scare both him and the people around him. It's one of my favorite series.

I really wanted to parallel that progression with Deputy Atoms, to make him more and more powerful until everyone around him starts to feel a bit scared, but it turns out that that kind of progression takes a very long time in Masks. Which is fine, I came into this knowing that I wanted to play that long game. To put it all into perspective though, we've been going on for several months, and Atoms is only just now on the cusp of becoming scary to those around him, with his next planned advancement being "Be the monster".

As for the questions:

1. I like the current chemistry, although some of its initial magic has sadly faded away, what with the loss of half the team. I'm not sure if I would join the X-Man game, but I would at least look over it.

2. I would like the time skip. However, as a fellow GM of Masks, it's my opinion that a "fresh start" is absolutely necessary at this point, as most of our relationships and influences are hanging. Not to mention a lot of plots relating to other characters which have now been lost. However, a time skip within the bounds of that fresh start is entirely possible. We start 'fresh', maybe even with new playbooks, but can keep all the background and character development (perhaps sans advancements, though that would depend on how everyone feels).

3. I can't think of anything.

I'm excited! It'll be cool to see it all come to a conclusion :)

I'm waiting to hear more on the Hashtag situation before I post again.

Atoms wanted to leave the guy and move on, but the look of desperation on Wingblade's face calls back his humanity. Conflicted, he decides to fall back on some of his police training.

"This building isn't safe. If you can lift him, pick him up and carry him across the street. After that, we'll have to leave him. We don't have time to tend to his wound, but if he's still concious, you could tell him to keep pressure on it." The former deputy looks away. "I'll leave a message on the sidewalk, so anyone approaching knows he's a bad guy with powers. And you can use your communicator to signal someone to get him." He quickly adds, "Though it'd probably be best if you used the emergency function rather than the normal one that just calls the police."

I wish I could use unstoppable here, but I'd guess this barrier doesn't count as scenery.

Break Out!

As soon as Atoms understands what's going on (which only takes about a second for the fast learner), he–almost instinctively–begins to vibrate his molecules at sub-light speeds, his body becoming a blurred streak. Like a living laser, Atoms bounces rapidly off the sides of the arcane bubble, stressing it to its limits. In a blink of an eye and a blinding flash, it shatters. Nothing could stop Shaun Adams, not even death. And with each passing hour, everyone who knew him could swear that he was getting stronger, more powerful.

Unleash Your Powers (+ Freak): 2d6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 5) + 3 = 10
Send him away!

"You know, maybe I was wrong earlier," says Atoms, appearing suddenly in-front of the Sentinel. "Perhaps there is something you can learn from me. Listen up." He shoots out his hand, firing a blast that strikes the Sentinel in the shoulder. "You mess with The Bull, you get the horns." Atoms fires another blast, this time striking his other shoulder. "You mess with The Beacon, you best be ready for an army." Another, in the leg, causing the Sentinel to fall to his knees. "You mess with The Nova, and you have to deal with a bright, new star." One more, aimed at the head, glancing off his visor. "And if I find that you've laid even a finger on Imagine, I'll end your entire organization." He levels his hand for a final blast. "Go tell your Masters that they'll need more men."

Not meant to kill or injure, but to send far away, this blast takes the form of a wall of energy, slamming and pressing into the Sentinel, sending him through the air and down the street for at least a mile before dissipating. Enough to take him out of the fight, and hopefully, also enough to convince him to abandon his efforts for the rest of the day. The Team didn't have time to waste on an protracted battle. Because if what Nick said was true, The Team only has a small window of time to rescue their friends. They had to get moving.

Flying back to the diner, Atoms sees North Star sprawled out across the street and Wingblade inside, alone with what appeared to be the last remaining Sentinel, who was down and bloodied. Hashtag was nowhere to be seen, but considering that the second Sentinel was missing as well, Atoms could guess that Vick ported him away somewhere. Whatever had happened, he could handle himself; the dude was smart. Honestly, it was Wingblade and North Star that he often was more worried about.

"Simpson!", calls Atoms. "Get up. The fight isn't over yet."

In one smooth motion, the former deputy flies through the hole the Sentinels' created, landing gracefully near Wingblade. His gaze moves from her bladed wings, to the wound on the Sentinel that she was currently applying pressure to. It was more kindness than these brainwashed cronies deserved.

"These scumbags were letting their magic go out of control, trying to take us out along with the entire city block. You did the right thing." Atoms lets her have a moment, but soon adds. "Now come on. We have to get to the docks.

"Alright...", says Atoms, his smile fading. "How about this then. You stop doing what you're doing, pull your men back and leave my friends alone for the rest of the day, and I'll go with you willingly. It's the only way your 'Masters' will have me" He lands in-front of the Sentinel. "I've already faced the worst Eldritch had to offer, your magic wont' harm me. Nothing will. And you already know how fast I am.

I will take advantage of the opportunity that Wingblade created.

Hashtag was hit by the Phasing Sentinel, who Wingblade was currently going after. On the other side of the diner, North Star was engaged with the Sorcery Sentinel. That left the Geokinetic Sentinel all to Atoms, a fight that he was honestly looking forward to. But first, he would have to avoid letting the diner take any more damage.

Directly Engage A Threat (+ Danger): 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (6, 1) + 2 = 9
Impress/Surprise/Frighten

"Lets take this outside." The former deputy wasn't asking as much as telling. In the blink of an eye, he flies forward with impossible speed, grabbing the Sentinel by the rock armor on his head before the poor soldier could even react.

When the Sentinel came to senses, he would find himself in the air, high above Halcyon City, with only Atoms' grip on his rock helmet keeping him from falling. Of course, it was that very same grip that would be his doom, as his atomic powers rapidly began to disintegrate the stone. Far below them, the street in-front of the diner–and all its hard pavement and concrete–awaited. Atoms smiles at his terror.

Only a second passes before the helmet is completely dissolved, just enough time for Sentinel to realize what's going on before he plummets. Lucky for him, Atoms wasn't a killer. He wouldn't fall for long.

"Why even come after me?", asks the former deputy mockingly, flying quickly around to catch the Sentinel by the rock armor on his chest, carrying him at extreme speeds, moving further down the road "You can't copy my powers like the others. There's no special genetic code, no secret knowledge, or samples to take." Descending to a more 'safe' height, Atoms lets go, throwing him to the street.

He watches as the Sentinel is sent tumbling across the asphalt, his rock armor crumbling from the friction as he rolls to a stop.

Spending Team to assist Hashtag!
Team Pool: 1 -> 0

As Hashtag follows orders, Atoms swivels around in mid-air to help him cover the civilians from any possible threat, ready to intercept with another one of his waves if need be.

Dysfunctional team is a-go!

The Basic Moves.pdf is kind of oddly worded, but according to the rullleeeeebooook, having Insecure marked gives you -2 to Defend. Which means Hashtag's move is actually a 6 instead of an 8, a miss.

The good news is though, that whenever time passes, the Team Pool resets to 1. So I'll quickly post and have Atoms boost Hashtag's move to 7, a hit. B)

By the way, when you get a hit with Defend, you're supposed to choose an option:
• add a Team to the pool
• take Influence over someone you protect
• clear a condition

I got you, bromes. You'll still be exposed to danger though.

Also, North Star, the move you want is Directly Engage a Threat and not Unleash Your Powers, since the latter is for when you want to 'overcome an obstacle, reshape your environment, or extend your senses' and not for fighting someone.

Probably shouldn't lower your Danger in that case, but it's up to you, broseidon.

Also, I won't mention Wingblade's typo. I got you too, brothena.

Marking Potential for missed Assess the Situation move (3 -> 4)

The former deputy is quick to defend those around him, his thoughts moving with incredible speed as the rune forms.

If everything Nick said was true, then some paramilitary group tied to Tectonic's parents had gotten their hands on a bit of Eldritch's power. But since it had hardly been a few days since they last saw Eldritch and the others, that meant that these reported super soldiers wouldn't of had much time to learn how to fully control their newfound abilities. So this 'spell' that was being cast now, it was probably going to be something simple. Something like–

"Everyone, get down!", commands Atoms.

BOOM!

The moment the explosion hits, Atoms explodes with an amazing display of his own power. Using the same trick he used back at the school, he sends a wave of energy throughout the diner, intent on vaporizing every bit of debris before it injures anyone. It works, and fortunately this time, no one gets shoved to the floor.

Defend (+ Savior): 2d6 + 2 ⇒ (1, 5) + 2 = 8
Protecting the people in the room (something/crowd). Hit.
"You keep them safe and choose one": Take Influence over someone you protect (North Star).
"On a 7-9, it costs you": Escalate the situation.

@North Star I already have Influence on you, so this will allow me to shift your labels. +1 Savior and -1 from another label (your choice).

Unfortunately, however, this terrifying shockwave does more than just destroy the debris. Its impact, combined with the blasting rune from the super soldier, cause the building to shake and weaken. Any more damage, like from the oncoming super-powered brawl, could cause the whole place to collapse.

"Simpson, Vick! This place isn't safe. Get Nick and the rest of the people out of here."

I just realized there was a missed opportunity for Atoms to not recognize the illusioned Wingblade. Would've been fun for a laugh.

Assess the Situation (+ Superior): 2d6 - 2 ⇒ (1, 5) - 2 = 4

The former deputy floats above the floor.

"I don't know how to feel about this," says Atoms, sounding a little bit uncertain as he folds his arms. "Maybe it's all this subterfuge, but there's something about the situation that's making me uneasy. I don't know what exactly."

Looking over the photos for a moment, he points at the photo of Imagine.

"That, for instance. When I was on my 'mission' with Eldritch, the one the Defenders assigned us–when I learned to fly–I flew over to the moon to visit Imagine's people. Now I didn't get to see Imagine herself, but according to her people, it sounded like she was safe and sound within their base, and that she was supposed to be in space in a 'chrysalis' for... quite a while." Atoms frowns and shakes his head. "So I don't see how Tec's parents could've gotten her."

Condition(s): None

Atoms comes down from the ceiling to get a closer look at the pictures.

"Interesting that there isn't photos of the rest of us here..."

"Nope."

Walking in, the lighting in this place seems a little harsh, and oddly kind of blue. Looking up, the source of this light is Atoms, floating near the ceiling above Nick's table and far away from anyone on the ground who might accidentally come in contact with him. His powers make the whole diner reek of ozone, and bolts of red lightning often come streaming from his chest to strike at nearby booths.

"DON'T MIND ME," calls Atoms, down to the patrons who occasionally glance up at him. "NOTHING TO SEE HERE."

So Atoms doesn't actually have his new suit yet, because Imagine's people needed time to calibrate one to his new energy signature xD

People get angry, and the conversation spins out of control. But instead of getting upset like before, Atoms quietly recedes into the background, intently watching the proceedings. Though he didn't have super senses, he was a fast learner, and everything he witnessed he catolouged in his mind, processing it. He especially pays attention to Nick and Hashtag's use of their powers.

It's all just data gathering though.

"Well... I'm not leaving," speaks up Atoms after both Hashtag and Winblade make their exit. "I'm sorry this team is giving you such a hard time, Nick. I'm in it for the long haul though. Whether my friends are at my back or not, this job is my life."

Oof, man. Where to go from here?

I'm a GM of Masks myself, and I'm currently running a PbP game of it on another site. You've been doing a great job so far, DM Default :) Masks is meant for 3-5 players, and you've been running it first time with 8 for a while now. Respect, man. That's pretty amazing.

I guess I have some issues. Like I said in my last post when you checked in with us, I've been struggling to have fun playing Deputy Atoms. Not that I want to quit or play anyone else, but it's been difficult. And I don't really want to pinpoint it and say that it's because of X or Y thing, or that Z should change; I want the game to evolve naturally, and I want to play to "see what happens next". I'm excited to see what's in store that you, and the players, are going to bring up in future posts. But... yeah, something to keep in mind, I guess.

If I had to say one thing though, then it'd definitely be this:
I wish you'd use our character's backstory elements. There's so much going unused there, like Whippoorwill, Allegory, Deputy Wakefield (and 'The Farm'), Red Shift, etc.

Oh, I have a lot to add. Don't you worry.

The former deputy eases up on Nick, satisfied with his apology and change of attitude. He steps away, backing off to give both Wingblade and Nick a safety cushion of space. From this distance, he listens politely to Nick's words, occasionally nodding respectfully, and even offering a mournful look when the young Defender mentions his former team. As the conversation carries on, it soons turns to the events of each mission, which Atoms is very interested in.

A folder is tossed Atoms' way, which, out of surprise, he catches. Unfortunately for the carefully prepared document, it almost immediately disintegrates in the former deputy's grasp, leaving Atoms empty-handed with a somewhat sheepish grin.

"It's Deputy Atoms–though I'm honestly considering a name change. And it's kind of a long story," says Atoms, when Wingblade and Nick question him about the results of his mission. "I'll let someone else go first."

"Now that they're no longer having super powered brawls in major cities, they can be questioned and we can get more evidence and arrests from there."

"If that's your truth," Nick responds to Tycho. "All I'm saying is that guidance might have been the angle I would've worked. We got plenty of youths well past saving, but these guys...these guys were just on the precipice, mostly friends who wanted a bit more control in their lives. I guess you completed your mission, not the way I would've, but you got it done."

Hashtag rolls his eyes. "Pssh... guidance? From an a&+#!@! like you? They'd go running right into the ranks of some supervillain." he spouts.

"HEY!", snaps Atoms at Hashtag. "When I said 'cool it with the insults', that goes for everyone." He initially sounds angry, but knowing Hashtag's personality, he finishes with a smile, a slight chuckle, and a joke. "Don't make me start a swear jar, Vick. You'll buy this team so many sodas that your bank account will be dry within a week."

@Hashtag: Laugh at Atoms' dumb joke. Aaand apologize.

The air burns with the distinct smell of ozone as Atoms listens to Nick's inflammatory remarks. The former deputy had said goodbye to two friends, two good friends. Maybe he and the rest of the Team didn't have their "act together", but he wasn't about to hear anyone call Eldritch or Ghost Dragon such a derogatory name.

"EXCUSE ME?" Atoms' voice bellows from across the room, the first words he had said since the Team had arrived.

He marches towards Nick. A chair is in his path, but instead of maneuvering carefully around it like he usually would, he physically grabs it and moves it aside. The chair erupts in a fiery glow at his touch, and before his hand can even leave its surface, it crumples and dissolves into a mix of gas and dust. And that's not all: the cellphones and other devices in Nick's hand vibrate strangely, the lights flicker softly, and the floor tiles literally melt under each of Atoms' footsteps.

"S$%%heads? S$%$HEADS!?" The former deputy's tone turns menacing. "You need to show some respect." He stands closer to Nick than he has anyone else in his 'unsuited' state, towering above the young Defender. "Dragon and Eldritch are like brothers to me; they're both kind, selfless individuals, and they both had serious personal reasons for why they needed to step away from our team. So how about you cool it with the insults, show some professionalism, and start. over. Otherwise, you and I are going to need a 'room of punching the s&#$ out of each other' real quick."

Provoke Someone (+ Superior): 2d6 - 2 ⇒ (5, 6) - 2 = 9
Atoms wants Nick to apologize and be somewhat nicer.

Atoms stands alone on the far side of the meeting room, staring at his hand. While the rest of the team seems to be in pretty high spirits, Atoms is somber. Three of his good friends had left the team, and though he was somewhat happy that they were now out of harms way, he continued to be burdened with the knowledge of their circumstances. They wouldn't see Imagine for years, Eldritch may never be seen again, and Ghost Dragon...? Well, things had never been the same after the fight with Haxor.

The former deputy raises his eyes, turning his attention away from his meditation, and toward the people still around him. He didn't have any stories of success or fun, only loss and failure. He desperately wanted to share these stories, to processs through them and ease the burden on his mind, but he wasn't about to bring down the mood.

Condition(s): None

Rearing to go, Atoms is stopped in his tracks when Eldritch makes his sudden announcement of his intent to split from the team. The tables had certainly turned since they first met. Unable to add anything, but understanding Eldritch's situation, the former deputy extends his fist towards the mysterious magician in a gesture of brotherhood. "Friends."

The symbol on Atoms' chest continues to emit its strange lightning, clawing at Eldritch's form until the moment he vanishes. Unbeknownst to either of them, this glyph, which appeared after Eldritch hit Atoms with a powerful burst of magic, held a portion of the magician's power. Overflowing with energy, spilling tendrils of strange lightning into the area around Atoms, the power had always attempted to return to its master, reaching out for him. Even now, after he had gone, it continued to search, grasping uselessly at thin air.

Atoms was alone.

Then came the call, not from a communicator (Atoms had lost his ear piece after the incident at the school), but from the boardwalk's PA system, presumably hacked by Matrix. Atoms wastes no time in heeding their instructions, flying off at extreme speeds, not exactly sure where "home" is, but presuming that they meant to head back to the Defenders' HQ.

Maneuvering through Halcyon City, the former deputy happens to come across North Star, Hashtag, and Ghost Dragon leaving the police station. He stops mid-air to greet them.

"Are you guys done with your mission too?"

"Thanks for waiting. I assume they're inside?" Atoms' glow intensifies as he examines the structure. "Lets get them."

The former deputy thanks them, then flies back down to Earth to help Eldritch.

"OF COURSE. ANYTHING FOR IMAGINE'S PEOPLE."

Hey guys, I'm going to drop this one. I'm having a hard time working up motivation to post for this game, and I'd rather not be a liability with it.

It was fun, though. It let me play with a different, more rules-lite system, and I'll probably try similar games in the future.

"I NEED A THETA SUIT," replies Atoms (with his mind).

"Finally! I've been looking for you for a long time," exclaims Atoms. Only, instead of actually saying anything, he merely flaps his lips because there is no air on the moon for which the sound to travel through.

Ah. Right. Should've thought about that.

"GREETINGS. YES, I AM DEPUTY ATOMS," thought-screams former deputy Atoms, this being his first time attempting to respond to a telepath. "I NEED TO SEE PRINCESS IMAGINE." Thinking for a moment, he quickly adds. "AND BY PRINCESS IMAGINE I MEAN KARA SOMETHING-SOMETHING. I DON'T REMEMBER HER FULL NAME."

Condition(s): None

This isn't working. In-fact, things had gone kind of hilariously bad. And it wasn't just the frequent failures that were funny. It was also kind of funny that, in the past, Atoms would've been livid about anyone creating this kind of damage, but now...?

Now he just didn't care.

Atoms might've laughed, if he could, but instead he touches down on the surface of the moon and starts to think. Failure or not, his efforts still produced something that should've provoked Imagine's people to investigate by now. Yet even after two attempts and all this time, there was nothing to show for it. It was upsetting.

The former deputy enhances his calm.

He looks back up (down?) at Earth, and remembers something important. One side of the moon, the 'near side', perpetually faces the Earth because the moon's orbital period matches its rate of rotation. If Atoms could see the Earth, then he was on the near side, but if an alien race was trying to hide their presence, wouldn't they build their base on the other side, the 'far side'? It was worth checking out.

Atoms flies to the other side of the moon, releasing small pulses all the while.

What would happen if he poured everything he had into a blast? It was scary to think about, and it was enough to stop the former deputy from trying anymore signaling rings.

Atoms is surprisingly emotionless about this whole experience. Being in space. Being on the moon. He looks up at Earth, suspended in the nothingness 'above' him, and feels a vague sense of awe and wonder, but even these are limited.

Turning back to the mission at hand, the former deputy briefly surveys the barren rock and quickly comes to the conclusion that Imagine and her people likely have hid their base. After all, down on Earth, there are people who make their living off of watching the sky for any changes. And the government was always quick to interfere with Outsider business.

He looks at his hands, concentrating, shifting his particles and forth, and the energy contained within. Light begins to gather in Atoms' palms. With a gesture, he sends it out in three ring-shaped pulses. Hopefully, Imagine's people would detect it and come to investigate.
