I'm running a great Pathfinder Campaign using the Beta PRPG rules with my weekly group and I also conduct a 4E D&D bi-weekly sessions at work.
After browsing through the new 4E PHB, all I can say is that it's a new edition and with it a new era of Fantasy roleplaying. D&D have influenced many areas in our lives, from books to computer games. I see no flaw in books and games reflecting back to a new version of D&D. The game, as I knew it from 1st edition of AD&D, has evolved. It got more complicated and sometime more streamlined, but every edition brought with it a scent of fresh flavour. 4E brought with it some flare to my office life, when a few employees turned up to me and said that since I've been a DM in 3.5, if it's okay with me to try and DM for them with the new edition... I was amazed. Sure, it's different, it might even look totaly different to hardcore players but the main theme of Fantasy Roleplay is still there. Just like people axed 3.0 when it came out and "tried" to stick to 2nd edition (I even know some people who tried to stick to 1st edition). It's a new system, give it a break and let it mature. It's fun, easy to learn, easier on us crowd (DMs) and I think my kids will enjoy it as well.
I think the pre-release of 4E helped me to maintain my initial mindset. Continue with 3.X with the Alpha/Beta release of PRPG and when the game matures (other 3rd party companies who start using the SGL) move to 4E with hopes that PRPG 1.0 (August 2009) comes out as 4E. I think the 4E is different, it's definately not the D&D I grew up on but it's still got a great flavour and excellent ideas that if put right (havn't read the entire books yet) could really make up a fun fantasy roleplaying game that appeals to both new and hardcore players. The only downside I see is the money investment. This time around, I'm sticking with 3 core rules from WoTC and the rest would probably be Paizo & Malhavok (if Monte comes up with more experimental stuff :))
I go with 4d6 drop lowest, create 3 columns with 6 results each, pick one column or ditch all and create 2 columns. Pick the one you like or ditch again and roll last time picking up the result.
I just came back to my D&D group. Took six months off of DMing due to my newly born daughter.
We no longer schedule sessions on weekends, that's my time with my family. I now try to get home from work earlier then usual at least twice a week. Your work place must be flexible enough for you to pull such a fit. We schedule a session on one of those two nights (starting at around 19:00 tops, and finishing around 23:00 for a four hours session a time). My other gaming habits (PC gaming) suffers, so I quit my current MMO subscription due to lack of time. (was very hard to pull away from WoW but it can be done). Hopefully, when my kids are older, I'll be able to DM for them too and maybe... just maybe... pull my wife into the game too Best of luck to ye.
Has anyone made a Campaign Cartographer map out of Golarion? Varisia? or any other regions in the Pathfinder world? Is it possible to get CC3 maps for that or the only digital resource available currently are the PDFs of the various products? I'd like to see a Magnimar & Korvosa CC3 city maps as well...
My group TPKed during their raid on Sodden Hold. It was a streak of bad luck on them all and one giant mistake their ranger made, leading to their ultimate doom. I have created a small side-quest, based upon some evidence the former party managed to pull and hand to Eliagos before their departure to Sodden Hold.
I hope this helps you out.
I allowed the Owlbear Baby into my AoWAP and it hasn't broken the balance.
As of current state, all the players rerolled 6th level PCs.
Eligos, after finding out some information about the AoW, have stumbled into a short conflict that provoked his suspicious mind about doppelgangers infiltrating the ranks in the city (probably with the help of Manzorian). The PCs are summoned by Eligos to investigate an ancient house rumored as haunted on a far hill overlooking some of Tavernhall's slums. The investigation is after the 'master mind' doppelganger who was could be the reason for the place burning down some 47 years ago. This adventure is based on one of my favourite levels of Thief:Deadly Shadows - The Shalebridge Cradle. It's a gothic horror mission that I'm sure will provoke some of the PCs fears and with that I hope to implement Heroes of Horror into the AoWAP. I'd be happy to provide the synopsis of this short adventure that would tie up into my AoW campaign if people wish.
After a successful jail-break, the party picked up their equipment and set Ilya free from her cell, they found the secret door at the top of the stairs and found their way into the storage area. Checking the crates and barrels, unleashed the three mimics upon them. One by one, the party managed to eradicate them and moved on to smash every barrel/box they found to make sure there's no more mimics.
Down into the pit he fell, when the two guards jumped off the catwalk to tackle the remaining party members.
Now, I've got a big dilema on how to continue on the AP from here... Do I send them to Zyrxog's lair, do I get Eligos to contact a group of adventurers to further investigate his findings after the party who got him interested in the AoW did not come back for the info he researched for them... Loads of things to prepare now, any suggestions ? I'd really like to continue on with the AP (and my players are all too eager to find out more too).
Beginning of 3FoE, party stands at the elevator shaft and decides to take it downwards. The rogue stated that he'll be climbing down the shaft through his "great climbing skills" to scout ahead before lowering down the elevator and got a nod back from the party leader. A very unfortunate roll of 1 ended with with the rogue's player looking up at his DM (me) with a question:
in which I replied with:
The player, without any hesitation asked the following:
In which I gave out the ultimate damage in the form of:
On one aspect, you got it right. A DM should know how to ad lib the works of the adventure to suit the setting and the events according to players re-action/feedback. Assuming the players found the green worm (Kyuss) and gave the jar to Allustan, and then turn to Smenk for information. You have their goals. Research into the source of the green worm 'infestation in the mines' (See letter to Filge in WC). My group is not among the Blitz type, so it takes a great deal of time to work-out all of the NPCs interaction for me, I know what's it like to have the PCs walk up to the big boss and... talk him into hiring their help :) Try to approach 3FoE from another angle, shift a few motives and create minor schemes for the leading NPCs. Maybe when the Cleric PC recount his adventure to his superior, he could be faced with charges of 'treason' in the eyes of his deity calling for a repent (Same goes for Paladins). 3FoE is not all that bad, in fact, I am having a great fun running it now. Hope not all is lost.
Snail pace... that's the exact pace my group is taking through AoW. Started 3FoE last night and they managed to sneak into the mines using excellent RP, not a single bloodshed (Boy, was I surprised).
My current group consists of psi-enabled PCs, I've ran The Whispering Cairn and about to start The Ebon Triad (AP #2). I'd like to incorporate more psionics inside the AoWAP and I am looking for suggestions on how to approach these changes. My first idea is to change The Faceless One into a 6th level psi-enabled NPC. Can anyone help me out? Seems like the psion in the group is having difficult times with Knowledge (Psionics), since there's not much use for it so far. I would love to hear some ideas.
After playing the Computer series: Thief I, II & III, The Seekers seemed to me like "The Keepers" from the computer game. A secret organization that lurks in the shadows and follows the development of events throughout the city (Campaign). I've adapted 'The Keepers' to my AoW campaign and I use 'The Seekers' in the same manner. Check out the Thief product line (from 1998 to 2004) you might find some nice ideas for your game too :) |
