Envoy isn't the class you want to take to Society games and play with strangers.
Anecdotally....
The majority of Society tables I have sat at CHA was the dump stat to make more powerful combat characters. If it wasn't needed for the class ; it was not present in a meaningful way.
In my experience, most Society players also consider the Witchwarper to be a "bad" class. So your chances of sitting at a table where nobody has a maxed CHA or expert trained social skills is pretty high.
Not saying Envoy should be relegated to "skill monkey" status just in case there's a social encounter skill check, but it can have a "Face" role in a Society game and makes an excellent Captain in Starship combat (and can usually fill any other role besides magic officer if somebody else really wants to be captain instead).
I have noticed, a lot of the more modern designed scenarios include some sort of "Face" interaction for skill checks. My most recent SFS game we missed a checkpoint for not having decent social skills and CHA in the group.
Looking through sign-ups on Warhorn I began to notice a trend in that practically nobody is signing up to play Envoy, or Witchwarper (the only two CHA classes atm).
Which led me to want to make a Lvl 1 Witchwyrd Envoy for my next game...which then led me to this thread as I Googled why people think this class is terrible.
I do think that Expanded Attunement, Universal Expression, Long Range Improvisation, Martyr's Improvisation and Clever Improvisation should have just been baked into the class.
