And the hits just keep coming...
As you've all probably noticed, I haven't been very active lately. The reason is, with the recent pending trade issues with the U.S. the company I work for has decided to try to limit its exposure to the U.S. market for the foreseeable future. That means they're cutting back production by shutting down some lines and laying guys off- this during what is normally our busiest part of the year. The short of it is I've been laid off and need to find at least something temporary to make up the difference between my normal pay and what I'll get on Employment Insurance. They're hoping things will stabilize by August & we'll be called back to work, but in interim I've got bills to manage.

These steel tariffs have got things weirded out. If steel goes crazy, it'll affect infrastructure and construction. No building means nobody needs pipe. No pipe means no work.

All in the name of "national security". When have we ever been anything but a friend to the U.S.? I just don't understand. What happened to make everything change?

In any event, it means for at least the next 2 months, maybe longer, I'll not have allot of time to spend online. I'll be busy looking for at minimum a temp job of some sort, and working on-call shifts out of the union hall. I don't see any other options open but to withdraw from the game. This isn't what I want, not after the literally years Terquem and I have been playing, and if anyone has any other suggestions please say them. At this point I'd jump for anything that offers a solution.

"We can spend a couple days getting our expedition ready. Rushing out unprepared would almost be worse than not going at all. I'd like to scribe out some scrolls to expand my usefulness, and definitely touch base with Patricia and the other elders before I leave again. I'll speak to Aniktah, and see if she wishes to accompany us. I can hope she sees what I do in Woodbridge and finds it as worth the struggle."
Calex looks out over the bustling town, and turns back to the others. "We've got a chance at something truly remarkable, I believe. It's just a matter of keeping it safe to let that potential grow."

Sorry for the delay folks- I had my car impounded and had to spend a few days with friends to get to work. And in a purely unrelated aside, don't buy a used radar detector...just saying...

Cal makes a subtle motion with one hand to keep Rob from leaving, and with the other gestures again to the interior of the cottage. "Finally we have the truth. Mother Garelda, NOW may we enter and talk? Wiscara needs us, and you have knowledge, that combined with what we already have, could tip the balance in 'Cara's rescue. Before we confronted you we had already considered the possibility that you were most likely coerced. As for you being a halfbreed, I tell you truly that it makes no difference to me. Indeed, I have found myself interested in courting a half-tafganor woman we rescued. Your fear of discovery, assuming we can rescue 'Cara, is safe. Show us your prisoner, tell us what you can, trust us to do what is right, and together let's try to bring 'Cara home."

"Yes. They did tell us how my friend Wiscara is being held...and where. And why as well, WANTHGREAME. Perhaps if you had really left others to LIVE instead helping the trafganor to kill them, we might have taken this another way. You insisted on doing this in the open.
So be it. For 'Cara's sake I would have spared you this. But your own stubbornness has forced my hand. You stand accused of aiding and abetting the raiders that recently pillaged our homes. I hereby arrest you by the power and authority given into my hands by the Baroness of Castletown. You are to be held in custody until the current emergency has ended and a trial can be convened."
Cal motions to his companions behind him. "Please, can one of you send for the Sheriff? We have need of Patricia, it seems."

"Captured by who else? Orcs, madame, or trafganor if you will. When we rescued the maetaur we learned of your 'Cara's captivity. And your part in the attack on Woodbridge. Do you still wish to keep us where everyone may hear our discussions?"

Calex's continence darkens from the affable village alchemist to display the iron of the young lord lurking beneath.

"I would be very, very careful of calling the Baroness' appointed lord of Woodbridge a liar."

Calex looks at his friend's elderly mother in gentle sadness. It had been too long since his last visit, and the instant distrust of him hurt. Still, Wiscara was the one that truly mattered as the actual hostage in this tragic dilemma.
"Wiscara? A practitioner of Green magic? In the city?! Ah, madame...I had hoped you would be more open with us...with me at least. It saddens me to see your distrust, and catch your falsehoods so obviously. But we know of 'Cara's captivity. I had hoped to bring you some good news with the bad, but talking here at the door where all can see is perhaps not the best idea, yes? May we came in and discuss things in a less obvious setting?"

Calex raps lightly on the cottage door. "Madame Gresham? Are you in? It's Sir Calex. We need to talk. It's about 'Cara, and I'm afraid it's bad news."

Cal nods and decisively starts in the same direction, then pauses a moment as a sudden look of fear crosses his face. "I just had a horrid thought. With the fanaticism this warlord is generating, and his desperate need for magical sacrifices to complete his plans, I pray to all the gods of light that my sudden fear is untrue...but what if Wiscara's mother WILLINGLY gave them her daughter?" Cal passes a hand over his face, going pale at the mere consideration of it. Then his expression hardens with resolve. "Enough speculation. We'll end this now one way or another. We will proceed on the basis of the presumption of her caring for 'Cara. Anything less will be dishonor to our own selves." Calex quickens his pace to catch up to Ravena's head start.

Cal ducks into the tavern to return his now-empty mug. When he emerges he brightens considerably at the sight of the gathered friends.

"Good morn to all! It seems almost everyone is here. Aniktah and Rob are our only missing companions. Aniktah was unsure if her presence would be helpful, so she might not come, but I'm sure Rob will be here shortly. Both he and I were friends of 'Cara in our youth, and Wiscara and I were also briefly vanguards of the town, such as you all are, but that band drifted apart as we all sought our own way. In any event, I'm rambling, trying to postpone this I guess. My point is that we might want Rob to also go with us. Two people whom Mistress Gresham knows would maybe reassure her more than just one."

Calex breathes in the morning air, letting the brisk cold shock him into wakefulness. After leaving the tavern last night, he had spent several hours more scribbling away to replace the scrolls he had used on their latest escapade. When he finally toppled into bed, it was to a restless sleep filled with shadowed dreams. He had awoken feeling as he hadn't slept at all, and he had to use all his self-discipline to get up and study his daily spells before stepping out to start the day, instead of diving back under the blankets for another few hours sleep. A quick splash of water from the rain barrel left him wide awake and finally ready to face the day. As the small town comes alive around him he closes his eyes a moment and lets the familiar sounds and smells of home wash over him. The scents of wood smoke and breakfast floats on the air, while the sounds of work & workers picking up their projects from the day before begin to ring out. Drawing strength from the resilience of the town, he heads for the Bread & Board again, not quite ready to eat his own cooking. Finishing quickly, Cal chats with the others in the tavern, gauging the feel of the people's reaction to all that has happened. Deciding he has gathered enough local gossip for nonce, Cal steps out with a mug of steaming herbal tea to enjoy the morning sun.

"Good morning, Ravena! Yes, I guess it's time to confront her. I'd still like to start with us telling her we know of Wiscara's capture, and our intent to rescue her, first. I'm perhaps being too optimistic, but I still hope it will be enough to gain her trust without using any of the darker secrets we know to compel her. It has the benefit of being true, after all. I really do intend to try to rescue 'Cara."

Calex nods in agreement. "I noted that too. I think I'll have the teams doing the rebuilding mixed up more between the local and Imperials to get a start on that." Cal sighs into his drink and pauses to take a sip. "The Urandomans & Alodoans need to interact more to break down their distrust. I'm just a simple knight with a small village as my demesne, but I can at least offer a beginning. A small rock can start an avalanche after all. It's a start."

Hi gang. I'm afraid I have some bad news. We've had a recent death in the family. My aunt, my mom's youngest sister, passed away yesterday of a sudden heart failure. It was so unexpected and happened so suddenly that we're all feeling rather shocked along with our grief. She was only a few years older than myself. Too young.
Anyway I'm going to need some time to help the family as well as myself deal with this. I'll be back next week. If needed, my character can be botted and I'll catch up. Don't let me slow things down, I'll be okay in a bit.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Calex smiles up at Robert as he joins him, and sits back again to take a long drink of the local brew. The taste of home. "Your service is welcome, but also remember, Rob, we are friends before anything else. After our latest venture I for one just want at least a single night in a bed under a roof. An evening with neighbors, and the familiar sounds of home. Tomorrow will bring all the changes into the light, but for now we can relax. The calm before the storm, as the sages say. Aniktah & I will visit Marcus, who as my Steward should hopefully have a handle on the latest state of the rebuilding. Then a meeting I'm not looking forward to: talking to Mistress Gresham about 'Cara's capture, and our hopes to rescue her."

Cal's interest would be in the undefined rod, the wand he has used, the bracers, since they would stack with his mage armor spell, the crown, bag (he is a conjurer, after all) and even if unusable, the staff attracts him since its a weapon he can wield.
The scroll might be able to be copied and shared. I guess we'll see after its identified.

Calex smiles & nods knowingly. "So we're for the Bread & Board then. It's always been the heart of the village. We can catch up on everything there, from our doings to the latest on the village reconstruction. The Baroness' forces need to know what we learned about this mountain warlord. Calex sighs. "All these problems buzzing around me like a swarm. A few days of simple village life would be welcome, I think. A chilled beer, a few hours at my study to refresh my scrolls, and a bit of time for Master Marwan and I to sit down and examine our finds wouldn't be wasted either. By that time the village gossips will have our news passed all the way to Castletown. But please, as Wiscarra's friend I'd like to be the one to tell Mistress Geralda of her daughter."
Cal gives a tired look to the group.
"And of course there is our newest friends to see to. I have a few extra rooms at the shop, I have some living space in the back. And once the furnace is going the workshop itself will be warm enough, if you don't mind the lack of privacy. I'm at a loss for you, Tom. You might be best taking up the offer to stay at Mingary Bend. Its only a few minutes away from the village and falls within my demesne. But an appearance in the village now would at least help with the explanations we'll be sure to be giving."
Suddenly the young lord changed, looking much more like the bookish village alchemist he once was. Shyly he turned to Anikttah, blushing slightly. Awkwardly, he says "I would like to offer you a place in my home, if your willing. I enjoy our time together and find having you near brings some joy into this now-hectic life I lead. Will you come?"

Wow. The closest I got to something like that was just a month ago, when the computer on the industrial blender I work with failed to inject the heat stabilizer into the plastic we were blending. When the ruined batches hit the plastic extruder, with no heat stabilizer the resin burned instead of melting, causing the extruder head to blow off and the burning plastic to release chlorine gas. I caught a small whiff of the gas, but luckily not enough to hurt me. That's as close as I want to EVER get near that stuff ever again! Glad to hear everyone was ok.

"The decision to settle among us, Tom, is one you must make for yourself. If you do decide to join our community, you will be treated as fairly as I can enforce. As the local Lord, I have the authority to provide both High and Low justice in the Baroness' name. I try to make no favorites, but I will say that if something is not right, I have been known to, umm, stretch rules to twist things back into a more just direction. Legal sometimes doesn't make something just. I will always err on the side of what is right, as I am able. If you find yourself cheated or mistreated, please come to me for help." Calex pauses a moment and then looks over all of the motley band accompanying him, and gives everyone a reassuring smile. "I include all of you in that. Woodbridge is growing, changing, and I need to set the foundations now for the kind of place I would have it become. A place of fair justice would be a cornerstone legacy I would be proud to leave."

"We may have a source just as good as the one in Otter Lake. Someone with possibly an even better incentive to cooperate. I intend to confront Wiscarra's mother. Not, however, to accuse her but to tell her we have learned of Cara's capture and let her know we intend Cara's rescue. I am hoping that by giving her our aid without censure it will grant her the faith to trust us and tell us what we need. In any event, Cara was always a friend, and not making the attempt is not an option I can live with. Her and Brother Phineas were amongst the first to accept me after the villagers found me injured and nursed me back to health." Cal turns to Aniktah, and says "Your presence may help- a living proof that her hidden mixed ancestry would make no difference to our acceptance of her."

"Yes, I think it's time to move. But one last thing, if possible."Cal produces the map they had been making of the area, and shows it to the now-free giant. "I'm of the idea we'll need the location of this 'Red Fortress' for our next step. Can you show us its location, and maybe expand our knowledge a bit of the area- maybe show other hazards we may encounter, other folk we may meet, and tell us anything else about the fortress itself? Perhaps we can even join with your own folk to drive the interlopers out together."

"I..uh..well thank you for your confidence. I'll try my best to see it's not misplaced. But I rely upon all of you to help me keep that path.." Calex replies, his face going red with pleased embarrassment.
In an obvious attempt to shift the focus of the others, Cal then says in a more thoughtful voice "Strange, though. Skreed knows Wiscarra's mother, yet I always knew Carra's mother as Geralda Gresham. Why would he name Wiscarra correctly, yet give her mother's name as Wanthgreame? Have you ever heard anyone calling Goody Gresham anything else besides Geralda, Robert? Wanthgreame is an oddly specific word for him to make up. Perhaps it's from her Trafganor heritage."

Minor point, Terquem...Wiscarra says in her character background her mother's name was Geralda. Its not an important change, Carra hasn't been in the game for over 3 years, but just a nitpick. ;)

We can just go with the other name moving forward. I'm probably the only one here that would notice.

Calex sighs in sadness at the words of the giant. "I know Wiscarra, although we lost track of each other in all the recent chaos. It seems our spy is yet another victim of this Lograd, just a mother trying to save her child. Before all this Woodbridge was just another small village trying to avoid the gaze of the conquering Alodoans, fearful they might prove worse than the Urandoma bandit kings they chased away. I was facing a life of a simple hedge wizard, a mere hobbyist at best, and a trade in basic alchemy. Wiscara and I shared many pleasant chats about magic. I'm sad that her mother didn't trust me enough to ask me for help in rescuing her, but I can forgive her, knowing now what her situation is. It does seem we are to launch yet another retrieval of my people from this Lograd.

He begins to irk me, greatly."

Calex turns to Aniktah, and taking her hand, says "Your help in rescuing our Elder, and saving Robert from his injuries was truly amazing. I need to ask if you would help us again with yet another mission. I would understand if you refuse. These used to be your people, and you may face former friends or even family. If you wish, I'll see you safely to Woodbridge instead, but I would prefer to have you beside me. Choose freely, my dear. It will have no bearing on my feelings."

Satisfied that the giant will be co-operative, Calex reaches into his pack to add to Rob's donation. Leaving another share of food and water with what is already there, Cal says "You are free to go. We keep our word. But before you leave I would ask you to rest, and perhaps answer some questions about how you came to be imprisoned. First though, I must help with Cicily. She is in poor shape, and I have magic we can use to move her gently without causing her more hurt. I will return." He clasps Rob's shoulder in farewell & waves to Stolos. At the same time he also produces a scroll from cases attached to his bandoleer, saying: "This will produce a floating field of force and allow us to move Cicily outside, without causing her any more injury or discomfort. It does not move very fast, but will last a few hours."

Calex takes notice of the poor state the giant is in and decides to add his own offer on behalf of the group. He moves up closer & stands just beyond Rob, leaning upon his staff in a nonthreatening , relaxed pose. "My name is Calex, the wizard of Woodbridge. If you agree, we will quickly see to your release. If it pleases you, what name should we call you? It is my wish to name you 'friend' but as long as the word enemy is not used we will call you whatever you wish to be known by. Are you injured? Do you need any aid?" he asks, followed with "Are you hungry? We can provide some food or drink if you need, as well."
Cal smiles at the giant before them, and awaits the immense fellow's answers.

"From what I gather, he's as much a victim of these orcs as Cicily. Also, if that scum keeps his word, he left the name of the traitor planted within Woodbridge that has been supplying them with knowledge of our movements and plans." Cal's expression darkens with emotion. "I would greatly desire that name. I would probably need more proof than simply his word, but if we at least know who to be suspicious of, we can launch our own investigation. Whoever it is has caused allot of suffering." The young mage takes a breath and exhales, visibly letting his train of thought shift away. "In any event, right now whoever our traitor is is a second priority to this warlord himself."

No. I want him to have enough equipment & money to get off Urandoma, but take enough of the interesting stuff to punish him. I'm hoping this will dispose of him, without resorting to murder. Him agreeing to exile hopefully solved that. If we encounter the weasel again, all bets are off though- he only gets 1 pass from Cal. Killing him in combat would have been ok, but since he surrendered civilized actions are called for. Had he killed his prisoner, he would have received no mercy from Cal, but Cicily herself said he took pains to avoid hurting her.

Besides, I really would like the name of the enemy agent in Woodbridge.

Calex watches as the orc leaves, hostility still radiating from him like heat from a fire, but he says nothing until the trafganor disappears from sight. Then a slight smirk of amusement crosses his face, as he turns to Ravena and says "I just had a thought. After the trouncing you gave him, I wonder how he'll fare if he reaches the mainland, only to discover himself surrounded by the multitudes of halflings that populate the Empire? Thank you for your help. Lets go check on the others."

The cure potion I feel should go to one of our frontliners- Rob or Ravena.
The Blue Whinnis I'll keep- it may be usefull if we ever have another prisoner to keep subdued. The liquid ice too is something Cal would like- he enjoys that kind of oddity. The rest can be divided amongst the others as decided by the group.

Calex eyes the trafganor suspiciously and does not reply immediately. Turning to scoop up the pack the orc had claimed as his, he opens it and removes anything that looks out of the ordinary or of unusual value. He leaves any money he notices in place, however.

Returning with the pack, he drops it at the kidnapper's feet. "Exile, then. I hold you to your word, and only with grave misgivings. Leave, and take your fellows with you. But if you think of betrayal- think on this. I am Calex, a wizard. My specialty is conjuration. Betrayal may have me pulling an ally from the ether to seek redress...across any distance. Be true, orc...and live."

Calex gives Cicily a worried look as she sinks down. Despite his concern, he sees that the others are taking as much care with her as possible, and after a quick touch on Aniktah's shoulder he moves off to confront their prisoner, tucking the wand into his belt. A quick flicker of magic re-ignites his staff with a bright light and he holds it menacingly at the trafganor's face.

"kindness? You kidnapped and beat one of our elders! Only her words saying you intended no death keeps you alive. That and the fact I find the thought of what your master will do to you when he gets his claws on you to be immensely satisfying. Your failure has probably issued you a death sentence.
How pleasant.
In any event, you are going to name those working as your agents. That won't earn you your freedom. Just a head start.
Give me those names!"

After that will come getting Cicily home and safe. The map, while obviously important, at this moment would be second to helping the prisoner.

This is just how Calex would see things, of course.

Waiting on the search results. My first reaction would be, since Cicily has confirmed the orc really didnt want to hurt her, is to get the names of his agents, scare the crap outta him to get him to run, and let him go so we never hafta deal with the snake ever again. Depends on what we find on him. Killing him in combat would've been fine, but killing prisoners without a just reason seems too dark for Cal. Especially since we have the word of his victim at least partially excusing him.

"I'll want to hear what Cicily has to say first, Rob. She is his victim, after all, and an elder of the maetaur of Woodbridge." Cal turns his attention to Ravena and her prisoner. "If you please, Ravena, search him to make sure he has nothing on him. I find it hard to believe his master would send him looking for a map with no idea what it looks like. That's like me ordering someone to fetch a certain stick from the woods, with only 'You'll know the right stick when you see it' for instructions."

Cal lets Stolos handle the burning sarcophagus. In the nonce he sees the escape route their adversary has planned. "You won't escape that easily!" Using his amulet's power to call upon a spell he has not readied, Calex casts another Grease spell at the patch of ground in front of the trafganor's intended exit.

Calex realizes quickly that nothing he has memorized or available will cross the distance to the enemy from his current spot. Also he is falling behind the others, so he runs forward to catch up.
