Karl Franz's beard! Has the mercenary been drinking already? I move and interpose myself between Brenog and the barricaded door. In the dark I don't know how much noise he would make before realizing it was nailed shut. I give a terse "Shh!" and lead him by an elbow to the open window. In a quiet yet annoyed tone, "Through there, you fool!" But without a light source I'm not sure us hummies can make ranged attacks, Deiros. :(
"I agree. Let us make for the village in the morning. Also let us be content to eat cold rations and forgo a fire tonight. We don't need to attract the attention of any wandering greenskins." "I will take first watch tonight." I'm OK with sleeping in the farmhouse. It will either be our fort or our tomb. LOL
Tzeentch the Changer of Ways wrote: Ottmar, you also feel as if something is not right. The forest is natural but something beyond your hearing or sight is making your scalp prickle and the warhammer at your side seems to itch to be drawn. I raise my hand and signal the others to halt. I look to the elf, wondering if he senses anything. "Careful," I whisper sharply, "Trouble is near." I take my shield off my shoulder and ready my hammer as well, hoping the others follow my example. To the elf, "Do you want to scout ahead while we hold?"
Seeing the young student conversing with the elf I approach for introductions. "Greetings, Sir Elf. I must admit I consider myself a dwarf-friend but your valor is much appreciated. I am Brother Ottmar, Initiate of Sigmar Heldenhammer. Consider yourself among allies. Bless you. May your bow never break." "Young Marius, for one not trained in the arts of war you availed yourself quite well. That was quick thinking with the wagon. I thank you too for your bravery." Hearing Brenog's hail, I then move off to see about his wounds. If any rolls are needed for healing at this point I can make them. But it sounds like we will all be refreshed after a night's sleep. Also... thanks for the fate point back, GM, you truly are a Changer of Ways! :)
Gratefully receiving the shield, I grasp the guard's forearm. "Blessings upon you. May this shield protect me as Sigmar will protect you." Even though the Caravan-Master is of questionable character, it is good to know that some of his men are of stout heart. I move along the line of travelers and help as one can. Experience points and shield listed on character page. No advancement chosen... yet.
I spend time in contemplative prayer to Sigmar, giving thanks for sparing me from the Beastmen. The battle has shown my shortcomings... This initiate has much work to do. But I lived which means the Lord of the Hammer has greater deeds for me to do. I then see to the elf and tend his wounds. I do not consider myself an elf-friend but this archer deserves our thanks. Finally I root around the caravan for a spare buckler or shield.
Tzeentch the Changer of Ways wrote: You may roll 1 Heal check per person/day. If you suceed, I believe you can restore 1d10Wounds to that person, if I remember the Heal skill correctly. Checked my rulebook before leaving for work this morning. d10 for lightly wounded but only adds one would for severely wounded (3 wounds remaining or less). I'm not sure of everyone's wound level so Changer please make the rolls for the amount of healing if I make a successful roll. I ask for help, get a fire going and boil some water. Add appropriate herbs and roots and clean and tend to wounds. Heal (trained skill) 31 On myself 1d100 ⇒ 44
Marius is unharmed, right? I will try a heal roll if he was hurt during combat. Changer please make rolls to add wounds to Brenog and Wolfgang, if appropriate. Thanks! I lay hands on each of the wounded, giving prayers of thanks and supplication for each brave soul.
My vision is as cloudy as my thoughts as I drift back into consciousness. Sigmar, I deserve not your mercy. I see the student looking down at me. The mercenary (How is he still alive? Praise Sigmar!) helps me to my feet. I am caked with blood, vicious cuts cover my body, and my aching head throbs. I see the enemy dead before us. I cough and weakly mutter, "By the Hammer, we are victorious!" Catching the gaze of the mercenary, I look back at the boisterous caravan-master. I understand the look of anger in the Brenog's eyes. Now is not the time... "Brettonian, your timely assistance is appreciated." In my current condition, am I able to attempt heal rolls on the wounded (including myself)?
From the corner of my eye I see how wounded my comrades are... the noble and mercenary especially. The young student, in a move that could be described either brave or foolish, has charged the warband champion. "Die beast die!" Making another aimed attack on Gor #1. WS (45) + Aim (10) = 55 1d100 ⇒ 97 Missing badly, I fear my traveling companions will not last much longer... Sigmar, give them strength! Arg! I'm getting annoyed w/the dice-roller too!
Tzeentch the Changer of Ways wrote: Gor 1, 40% Attack on Ottmar 1d100 Damage 1d10+3 I cannot help but wonder what corrupted deity drives these beasts to fight with such fury! My blow would have killed most men yet this creature still draws venomous breath! Attempting a parry w/unbalanced weapon. WS 45 - Unbalanced 20 = 25 1d100 ⇒ 11 As my dagger blade meets axe-shaft I scream, "Sigmar lives! Back to the hell whence you came!" Parry successful! I believe Wolfgang is up.
The combat swirls around me. Brenog is somehow staving off the herd's leader. The noble and elf face multiple foes... No sign of the young one in the wagon. Despite the pain in my arm I lift both weapons gauge my opponent and try to cudgel the Gor's skull. Attack on Gor #1. Half-action to aim, half-action for standard attack. WS (45) + Aim (10) = 55
Rolling damage, SB 3 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12 I am the instrument of Sigmar! His hand guides mine!
Attacking Gor #1 Having deflected the axe enough to avoid its blow, I circle the Gor slightly, bide my time for a moment, and look for an opening. Seeing the unholy monster bare its fangs at me, I shout at it, "Feel my wrath!" Half-action to aim, and then another half-action to make a standard attack. WS (45) + Aim (10) = 55 1d100 ⇒ 97 My blow is diverted as I trip slightly over a tree root. Despite knowing it will cost me much penance, I curse to myself.
Tzeentch the Changer of Ways wrote: The Gor charging Ottmar snarls in satisfaction as the axe wounds the priest of Sigmar. Based on my reading of the rules I have a reaction and will use it now. Let me know if I misread. The feral beast stinking of blood and sweat bears down upon me. Its axe flashes and I try to block it with my dagger. WS 45 1d100 ⇒ 88 Using a fortune point to re-roll: 1d100 ⇒ 10 My dagger manages to deflect the blow just enough... the axe-head passes by my ear and catches only empty air. This abomination will pay for its temerity!
Pulling back I take measure of the slavering, horned Ungor that is wounded. He is heavily favoring his right side. I take aim and strike again with my warhammer. Taking a half-action to aim and then make a standard attack on Ungor #2 again. 45 (WS) + 10 (aim) = 55 1d100 ⇒ 43 damage 1d10 ⇒ 6 6 + SB (3) = 9 points total
Tzeentch the Changer of Ways wrote: *shrugs* Nah I don't believe so, this campaign can be really fun for players as it progresses. Inventiveness is very much appreciated, but, for example, I would really rather not have my PC's try and make catapults from stuff lying around or etc when they have no idea how. that's all i ask. Again, ideas for inventive ways to overcome my encounters can be very fun to adapt to as a GM, and I always appreciate players being interested enough in the story to try and adapt to their surroundings. now then, battle continues! I'd move this type of discussion to the OOC thread. As for the combat, am I up? Will you announce the start of round 2? Thanks!
Tzeentch the Changer of Ways wrote: Wow opened up the page and people have already posted their actions. Little messy but I can live with it, just for future reference and my peace of mind. thanks :) I mistakenly thought the successful attack on Wolfgang was actually on *ME* on round one, so I was trying to retroactively post my parry as a free reaction due to my defensive stance. That's what happens when you post at work in a hurry. Sorry, probably made the 'messy' posting even messier. As Marius asked, what is your preference for combat posting? Should we wait to be prompted before declaring actions? Tzeentch the Changer of Ways wrote: @Ottmar, not sure what you're trying to go for here, are you trying to parry for Wolfgang or preemptively parrying for yourself? Cuz you don't roll parrying till I have confirmed a hit :/ sorry not trying to sound like an @$$hole for rulings. Also you still have a half action to take, assuming you wanted to strike at the Ungor. Parrying is a free action but on the enemy's turn. As I wrote I thought I received damage in the surprise round. I won't be rolling dodges/parries preemptively. Sorry! So for "Round One" I will draw my dagger (half-action), make a regular attack (half-action), and then have a dagger in my off-hand in case I need to parry. Looks like I'm up so here's my roll on Ungor 2: WS 45 "Have at you, foul beast!" 1d100 ⇒ 16 Rolling damage 1d10 ⇒ 8
Tzeentch the Changer of Ways wrote:
Note: This is my free reaction for round one. Having readied into a defensive stance, will try to parry with my weapon: Parry (WS)= 45 1d100 ⇒ 67 For naught and damage is taken.
The beastmen give feral roars as they charge. Calmly I draw my dagger from its ankle sheath, ready my hammer, and utter a prayer for myself and those around me: "Courage brothers!" "Sigmar of the Hammer,
Changer: I'm at work and without my rulebook. Can I ready weapons and adopt a defensive stance for a half-move? I guess I want to be ready to receive the beatmen's charge and parry later in the round. Whatever ruling you give is fine. Or if you have a better suggestion please make it! Thanks!
Wolfgang the Noble wrote: "Blessings of the Heldenhammer be upon you. I am Wolfgang, recently of Middenheim. May I have a moment of your time?" Seeing my questioners clothing and mannerisms, I immediately recognize his station. "I knew not that we were blessed to have nobility among us." Bowing slightly, "My liege! I am Brother Ottmar of the Order of Sigmar. How might I be of service?" Changer of Ways wrote: "Passing 'tween two hills! Convoy in single line." Casting a doubtful glance at the source of the command, "What think you of our Caravan-Master?" Perception (31), 1d100 ⇒ 12
Marius Fenwick wrote: "...Please forgive my poor manners. I am Marius Fenwick researcher for Professor Algemanerr and currently an article of baggage." "No apology necessary, Marius, the pleasure is mine. A student of philosophy, eh? Some of my order scorn such work... However I follow the teachings of Aquilonus who argues that faith and reason coexist." I wink at the bleary eyed researcher, "Perhaps we can have intellectual debate over the campfire sometime?" I leave the student so he can recover in peace.
While traveling I mingle company, giving heart to the downcast and affirming the stalwart. Walking past a wagon, a young man with a scraggly mop of black hair sits bolt upright, moans and collapses. Ah, it was not so long ago that I lost myself in drink, carousing until the morn. Praise to the church that set right my ways. In the cart is a water barrel and I bring the youth a ladle. "Drink this friend. It will help remove the cobwebs that muddle your mind. I am Brother Ottmar, and I bid you good day."
A pall of dust hangs over the caravan as it moves slowly eastward. I pause and glance at the the Lord Constable's "relief force." Having already sent every able-bodied soldier north to defend Middenheim, it is left to the handful of remaining men-at-arms, mercenaries, adventurers, but mostly everyday ordinary citizens to help protect Averland's eastern border. Some volunteered for this endeavor, others were told to go with a vague promise of future payment. I chide myself for looking upon this motley group with some dismay because looks can be deceiving: Sigmar is with us and we are his people. Walking along I notice a large, sturdy man with broad shoulders. Obviously a seasoned mercenary, a crossbow hangs from his back and he carries a hefty battleaxe across his shoulders. I catch stride beside him and call out, "Hail and well-met, fellow traveler! May Sigmar smile upon you. I am Brother Ottmar Manstein, Initiate of the Holy Church of Sigmar. How goes it for you on this blessed day?"
Rector Meinz lights all twelve candles. Twelve for the number of tribes that followed Our Lord; twelve for the number of electors established in our Holy Empire. I kneel before the altar. Meinz turns to me, makes the Sign of the Hammer and delivers his benediction: 'Initiate, receive ye the blessing of Sigmar
Take heed of those you meet
Be any impediment in them
You are an extension of the Empire
Merciful Sigmar
In Sigmar's name...' The assembled clergy and a handful of worshipers respond, 'Amen!' The rector makes the perfunctory gestures, touching forehead, lips, chest, and does the same to me. As he does so he whispers in my ear, "I have had a vision. The Demon of Mutation sees you. But fear not. Our Lord watches over you." I stand, place my warhammer over my chest, and proclaim in a loud voice, "Only in death does duty end." I turn and stride out of the sanctuary to face my destiny. My thoughts drifting back to the present, I look out at the road that will carry me towards the Black Mountains. Towards the pass where Sigmar rid our lands of the Greenskins. Towards my destiny. The church has received portents of evils in the east. They are sending me and I go without remorse or hesitation. '...the Demon of Mutation sees you!'
Taking Sixth Sense and Acute Hearing. Both added to character page. Also added basic human skills (Empire Knowledge and Gossip... Speak Reikspiel already a skill for an Initiate) Also took the "Free Advance" per p. 20. +05 to WS. Thanks, oh mighty GM, for all these blessings prior to slaughtering us in thy butcher house!! :)
