Bromen carefully follows in Marcum's footsteps, trying to cover his companion while staying out of his way while making every effort to place his feet exactly where the investigator did. A part of his brain wonders if he can succeed in all three at the same time.

"'Find the false ye find the true'.....Thinkin' this is another trap and we're s'posed t'head back to the dead end? Didn't see a way through but maybe we missed somethin'?"

The dwarf grinds his teeth audibly as the group moves over to the newly revealed exit. "Looks like our....host...is enjoying watchin' us squirm a bit. Doesn't like our feelings on his humor, but I'm laughin'........." Let someone else worry about the corpse.

Bromen stares at the new entrance for a moment, clearly deep in concentration, before taking a few steps into the opening.

Activate Detect Evil (as if I didn't already know) then a 5' step forward through the threshold, unless he sees anything unusual with .....

Bromen is so focused on the door that it takes him a moment to register Bolest's shouted warning. That is a moment too long as the stones begin to rain down on him. Damn you, Cloudus, yer Spellbane training forgot to include noticin' bad stonework like a normal dwarf!

He is staring at a nasty compound fracture as the wave of divine energy passes over him and begins to reknit his broken bones. Still wounded but certainly better off he looks around to reorient himself in the corridor. Moving slowly in an attempt to not start another rockfall the dwarf begins to dig his way toward where the investigator was standing.

"Everybody all right?"

"Might not be the quietest, but takin' point is fine by me."

Bromen scans the corridor and adjusts the length of his dorn for maximum coverage. "But this here's the only key I've ever used, so if ye want a little more finesse with the lock, that's not me."

As Marcum moves forward to examine the door Bromen moves along the opposite wall, trying his best to scan the stonework for anything unusual as he goes. With a few slow breaths he steadies himself to prepare for whatever lies ahead.

Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (13) + 13 = 26 That's a 28 with Stonecunning, checking the places he walks for 'trouble'.

Moved my token in Roll20. Once he gets to that position he has the dorn dergar ready for Reach and goes into Combat Patrol to cover the doorway with an effective 15' threatened area.

Bromen cannot help but chuckle at the exchange. They took em out t'measure, and it sounds like he lost.

The dwarf stays on the periphery as the group searches, pacing back and forth as if trying to cover every single one of them at once. As an entrance starts to take shape he moves over to Marcums side. He lets out a few feet of chain, ready to strike out with his dorn before anything even has a chance to get too close.

As Marcum sketches and talks the dwarf also moves into the area (assuming nothing had happened) and places himself between the investigator and the interior of the strange area.

"If yer gonna keep yer head down and not pay attention to yer back, let someone know, will ye?"

When the bush seems to survive crossing the line unchanged, Bromen turns to Bolest. "Can ye tell if its some kind of magical barrier that'll keep doing this? Or did somethin' happen here?"

Almost unconsciously, the dwarf takes a step closer to the line but does not yet cross it.

Bromen is so busy studying the strange line between life and death to notice the constructs of the objects. At Rick's comment he takes a step back from the nearest one with a scowl.

The dwarf squints at the obelisk, focusing his attention on the thing as if he could force it to tell him its secrets, then slowly turns his head to scan the area ahead.

"Ye better answer his question, don't like walking into a trap...."

Use Detect Evil to answer the obvious question.

A solemn look replaces the grin on Bromens face for an instant. "Forebearers or codes, all are beholden to somethin'.". His hand moves up to trace one of the runes on his breastplate.

"M'dad forged this for me. Not even sure I was out o' swaddling when he started it. Gave it t'me the day the oracles.....the day I left the clan. Haven't seen him in almost 2 decades but I feel his gaze every day. His ...... expectations."

He is silent for a moment before raising the skin again and looking to the pharasman. "Ye can do yer best to live up to that or ye can let the weight of it crush you. Here's t' letting the weight be damned.". He takes another swig.

Ye trying to convince him? Or yerself?

"Finally, something I can agree with ye on!" The dwarf could barely contain himself during the duel, actually dodging from left to right as if the sword strikes were aimed at him, half rising from his seat several times to join the battle himself. With a huge grin Bromen pulls out a wineskin and pops it open, the dark heady smell of a strong dwarven stout noticeable even from a few steps away.

He raises the skin in salute to the two sparring partners. "To yer health, and to our success 'ere on this gods-forsaken island."

Bromen's hand twitches, extremely tempted to spar a bit after so much inactivity in the last few days beyond travel, but he manages to resist the urge. He instead studies the two men as they exchange attacks, noting styles and tells for each of them. Knowing who he is going to be fighting with, how their styles might mesh with his own, would be critical to surviving the dangers ahead of them.

And knowing a weakness just in case is never a bad thing.........

He also spares a look for the uncharacteristically quiet fetchling, wondering how he fits into their little band and what he brings to the table.

Bromen stays close to the group but says little. He does not know much about sailing or soldiering so he does his best to stay out of everyone's way. He tries keeping an eye on both Marcum and Kheti as they scatter across the deck to go about their business.

Still unsure of exactly what they have just been dumped into, the dwarf specifically looks for anyone on the ship that is paying a little too close attention to the five new arrivals, especially anyone who is watching while trying not to be noticed.

Bromen also takes one of the bracers, but also does not put it on yet. That spell is divine, sure enough, but tolerating a vamp n' trusting one are two very different things.

Noticing that he is not the only one reluctant to accept the gift on blind faith, the dwarf stows the item in his pouch for later inspection.

"Looks like we're all ready then?"

Bromen's suspicions start to rise, and he can be silent no longer.

"Wait.....ye said they sent ye to clean out a vamp nest alone, but now yer tellin' us ye're a 'diviner'? What were ye gonna do, question them into submission? Somethin' isn't adding up here....."

Bromen makes his way down into the chamber but different than some of his companions he has little to say to Andross. Unlike the simple forms of summoned undead, easily associated with a necromancer's foul casting, a vampire was a product of another cursed with the disease. Deep in the past there were evil arcane magics, no doubt, but so indirectly and so far in the past that the diviner's presence in front of him did not offend the dwarf as much as it did his Pharasman companions.

Does not mean he is going to run up with as friendly a reaction as Bolest did, either, but he feels no need for promises or bravado. Yet.

The dwarf nods his agreement to Lady Kheti's comment. "Aye, if we're ready then let's get at it. I fer one could leave now, if the rest of ye are."

Bromen remains silent during the audience. He knows all too well the inner struggle the pharasman faces: the dwarf himself is sworn to defeat the evils of arcane magic yet almost every piece of gear he carries has been enchanted in some way. True, his armor and weapon were empowered by divine casters when they were forged, but as for the remainder of his armaments .....

"Fer years, I've thought of it as 'a dose of their own medicine', using magical weapons to fight against the evils of abused magic. Maybe the Grey Lady will know that servin' under this creature is a means to an end. Using an undead to vanquish a greater undead, can't be that bad a thing, right?"

He falls silent again, doubting that similar words would appease his own turmoil so cannot imagine they are helping the knight very much.

"Greedy caster becomes an undead nasty through evil magics and by consortin' with forces best left alone. If there's a better example of how magic corrupts I ain't heard it."

"I agree, Marcum, sounds like 'dyin' of ignorance' is the least of our worries. Ask me, before we'd even be able to think of takin' on the sorcerer we'd need to close some o' these permanent portals to cut off his power and his army of minions. Unless we want t'be overrun. And after that small task, then there's the nightmare of the sorcerer himself."

He turns to look to the knight. "And what's yer Lady say about liches? I know enough to know how they get that way, maybe a little about how to fight 'em, but how do ye destroy 'em for good?"

Bromen squints at Marcum, a slightly suspicious look as the man continues to demonstrate his vast knowledge. The look is gone in a second, which is about how long it takes for the dwarf to realize that the investigator is far better suited to the task.

Following Kheti's lead he addresses Marcum. "I know a bit about the undergrounds also, and I've picked up a thing er two about the arcane along the way."

His interest is certainly piqued at the mention of the Alric's tome and the subject matter. He makes his way near to Kheti, not quite reading over her shoulder but very close to it. He glances around the room, and not seeing the Captain returning he pitches his voice low so as not to be overheard.

"Im new t'this pathfinder business...any of ye know who 'the ten' are?"

Bromen pats the dorn at his hip. "Oh, I've rattled a few bones in my day, don't ye doubt. But 'hatred and malice' alone aren't enough to keep a soul out o' yer Lady's hands. Not without some dark magics t'help them along."

His face takes on a more serious cast as he responds to Cooper. "Save yer prayers, 'fraid its too late fer me n' mine. Probably haven't seen as many of those nightmares as you have, but I've had a necromancer throw a horde between him and my dorn."

Another pat to the weapon. "Cost was heavy, but it didn't help him in the end. Didn't help the summoner I battled after 'im either."

Bromen's eyes narrow slightly as the human mentions prophesy then speaks in dwarven. Unconsciously his hand moves to lightly touch the runes etched into his armor. Wonder if'n he knows.....

He does not look at the half-orc, only tilts his head in that general direction. "Plenty of prophesies out there, friend. Most not pretty unless.....how'd ye say it, pidaja teadmised?.....unless there are 'interventions' ...." "keeper of knowledge."

"But I'm guessin' that's why we're here, right?"

Bromen does his best to ignore the situation and answer Sir Wolfric directly.

"Tis the Father I serve," the dwarf motions to a small iron hammer symbol of Torag hanging from his neck. "But fightin' against evil magics of all kinds, necromancy included, that's the role he's given t'me."

Fetching's got stones, I'll give 'em that. Must be a finger-waggler.....

Bromen hands his invitation to the guard, still unsure if responding to the summons was even the right choice. The last decade has been plagued with choices that were not quite 'right', although the dwarf would be hard-pressed to call any of them truly 'wrong'. Findin' a path doesn't always mean its the right path....

He does his best to hide his surprise at the size of hall. He opening scoffs at the size of the assemblage filling the place. "Personal invitation, eh?"

The dwarf moves around the room until he finds a spot near a small group that is deep in discussion. It appears they have at least come familiarity with each other and therefore might be a good source of information. He tries to be discrete as he spends a moment or two eavesdropping but it has never been his forte: on the tall and slender side for a dwarf, Bromen's gruff features bely more experience than one might expect for his obvious youth. His breastplate shines brightly with a detailed filigree around the edges, fine craftsmanship depicting two dwarven runes intertwined in a repeating pattern.

Hardest to keep inconspicuous is the unusual weapon at his hip. A length of chain ending in a spiked ball, the dwarven dorn dergar is not a weapon commonly seen these days. This one, however, shines as if new and is clearly well cared for. It almost looks too clean to have ever seen use but one look at its wielder quickly dispels that notion. This dwarf is a warrior who knows his business, and knows how to wield this unusual weapon.

Realizing that his presence will soon be detected Bromen steps forward with a short bow to the group and looks to Cooper. "Beggin' yer pardon, but yer friend the knight has the right of it. Take what solace ye can in the Lady's judgment, for the alternative is too much t'fathom."

He turns his gaze to Rick. "Necromancy is vile magic, and all who stand against it due the world a great service."

The dwarf gives another short bow. "I am Bromen, son of Aralak, of clan Vrektel . Do ye know if this summons is related to yer work for the Lady, or are their other evil magics t'be dealt with here?"


Dotting for interest, especially now that there are better chances!

This alias has recently become homeless and I would love to get him into another game. Bromen is an olde fashioned magic-hating dwarf, trained in the Three Pillars of Mage Combat to defend the world against an apocalypse caused by evil arcane energy.....

....problem is, he's been out in the world a while now with no sign of this apocalypse or how to stop it. He's not quite discouraged YET but he's been traveling around a bit 'rudderless', looking for the right path to take without much luck so far.

This alias is up to level 6, easy enough to add a few more fighter levels to bring him up to 9th if selected. His old game is still active (just not without him since he got dropped in lava) so theres quite a few historical posts if you want to check out his personality etc.

I was up in your neck of the woods twice this weekend.

I dragged the whole family to the Dragons Den Saturday night for the Friends n Family sale, but they goofed on the discount for one of my things so I had to go back Sun evening to have it fixed.

Back when I was lurking I thought of this idea for a guy who learns he has some dragon heritage (draconic bloodline or disciple) who volunteers to go into the mountain not only for the fame and fortune but also to learn more about himself. Seemed a decent fit for the legends of this place. Maybe even at risk for being tempted once they find things down there .....

Never gave much thought to the mechanics of what that would look like but I will be thinking it through for a backup character. And I've been critiquing the arcane archer in my real life game so based on Misha's comment I can take a stab at making one myself.

Will get a few options together and submit for consideration. (Being very presumptive here of course, if you're thinking replacement because I lost my shot I would totally understand that as well ...)

But don't worry Krieg, Zeltresh will still craft for Dred at cost :)

I love the character and really like being part of this game ..... But it's papa's world, we just live in it. I'll also wait for that clarification.

No worries, boss, it is what it is. There weren't a lot of places to move that would have avoided a full attack, and clearly the dice roller did NOT love him - three attacks in a row I rolled a 3, 10, 6.....hard to defeat a monster if you cant HIT IT. Stinks that it happened but reading backwards I certainly cannot complain about how it was handled.

I kind of love being here so I patiently await the resolution!

Sorry, cant believe I missed a round! Not too sad, my bull rush idea would have been a BIG mistake...

Again Bromen hears good advice from his companions and again his battle instincts make him falter. She's got him within reach now, any attempt to escape will provide the beast a parting shot . He tries the spell again but he had felt it barely sneak past her defenses before.

So far only one thing has been effective against her, and that was his dorn. While he hated the notion of arcane energies touching him without his permission he could not argue with the speed boost he got as a result, so he used that speed to strike out at her with it not once but twice.

Well, that's one of the best rolls on the page so Im hopeful. Either way he's still moving: one AOO has to be better than another full attack!

I didn't mean that I wanted to be in need of healing spells RIGHT NOW.....

Bromen lets out a scream, part pain and part rage, as the creature rips into him. It does not take a healer to see he is in trouble and simply cannot survive another exchange like that.

"Watch out, Misha, Im backin' up." Knowing he needs to put some space between himself and the creature but unable to resist taking another swing at it, Bromen begins berating her as he retreats.

"A mate for ye? Yer daft! Just sitting here waitin' fer fools to come to ye, how lazy can ye get!"

Standard Action: Attack!

yeah, the idea of a mage hunter with SR sounds great on paper, but the practical application is a bit of a pain. Im sure at some point the character will die bc the needed healing spells keep failing against him.....

I should probably keep track and make the SR rolls for you guys: its my concept, it shouldn't make more work for everyone else!

Finally seeing the dwarf female for what she truly is, Bromen takes another small step forward and lets the chain of his weapon do the work, building momentum with a few quick swings before lashing out at the beast.

That attack would also get another +1 to hit. And from that spot it would be a Full Attack Action, so...
