Thian Tul wrote:

In looking at this character more closely I noticed that he is really squishy. I tried to put a lot of different roles into this one and I think is just not quite as viable for a campaign set in a wild land.

I would like to hear if someone has a different opinion.

So I'm posting two more entries each more focused in their own way.

Of course I will choose only one entry for consideration if that is wanted.

While he does look a little squishy, his skill list is actually very well set up as a wilderness explorer - good Survival and Nature skills, plus Cartography Lore for map-making. He's not the most physically fit explorer, but I think he can work in a wilderness survival campaign. Out of combat, his role seems to be Healer/Wilderness Explorer/Knowledge dispenser who is capable of supporting the party Face via Diplomacy.

The Cloistered Cleric's role in combat is really one of Healer/Support, given that the Divine Spell List doesn't have a ton of offensive spells on it, especially at low levels. The Wealth domain might actually fit better than Earth, as Appearance of Wealth is unlikely to break Sanctuary the way Hurtling Stone would. Plus, the Precious Metals advanced domain power could be very useful, given the significance Fey play in the adventure path.

Of course, if you don't think you'll enjoy playing Thian, then by all means, play a different character. I just wanted to let you know that I do think he can be viable for a campaign set in a wild land.

Submitting Bolys Quinn for the campaign. He's not very cultured, but he'd like to give this whole expedition a try, and maybe find out if there was some truth to his grandpappy's claim that they used to own land down south.

Phntm888 here, submitting this guy. He was in a Kingmaker game that died due to players dropping and conflicting GM styles. He's got a down home, back country feel to him, but I never really got to explore his growth from such a background into the leader of a kingdom. Plus, I'm looking forward to throwing some amusing sayings into his dialogue.

Male Human Ranger 1

So, it's been a week. Are we officially done?

Male Human Ranger 1

Sorry and Derren have both dropped the game, and we haven't heard from Carina in a while. I've been waiting to hear the bandits' response to Derren's challenge.

Male Human Ranger 1

There are some things in life more important than gaming. Grandfather dying of cancer? That's one of the biggest. I'm sorry to hear about your grandfather, and I have nothing but the best wishes for you. Good playing with you.

Male Human Ranger 1

Maybe just move into position so you have a clear charge lane, then?

Male Human Ranger 1

Now would be the time for Weyland to prepare to charge in, I think.

Male Human Ranger 1

Bolys gets into position, and prepares to shoot any of the bandits who choose to charge.

Initiative: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14

Readied action to shoot the first bandit who charges

Comp. Longbow attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 2

Male Human Ranger 1

"I'll sneak close and prepare to fire once you charge. Maybe I'll draw one or two to me."

Bolys slipped back into the woods and set himself up to fire on one of the bandits.

Stealth: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24

Male Human Ranger 1

Sorry guys, got busy at work. I'm still here.

Bolys crept back to the others and said, "Okay we've got nine of them there. They don't appear to have any defenses, but there's a wagon someone could hide behind. What should our strategy be?"

Male Human Ranger 1

Do they have any kind of lookout platforms, or hunter's blinds, or the like, that archers could hide in and cover the area?

Male Human Ranger 1

Stealth to approach: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Bolys slipped through the trees, watching the bandits' movements, trying to pinpoint their locations so the rest of the party could make an effective plan.

Male Human Ranger 1

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

"Aye, that seems to be the place. Perhaps I can scout closer and see if I can hear what they're sayin'."

Male Human Ranger 1

"If we're going to keep an effective watch, we'll need one. I cannot see in the dark without light, and I suspect there are others in our group who require as much."

Bolys set about starting a small fire, then tied his horse to a nearby tree and laid his bedroll out. "I'll take the first watch. Why don't you take the second, Cyrioul?"

Male Human Ranger 1

I think we're waiting for Calzus to forward the plot.

Male Human Ranger 1

Bolys nods and says, "Regardless of whose fault it is, we're not too far off. And no, Derren, we are not going in circles. The grass here has grown in a completely different pattern than elsewhere." Bolys heads off on their adjusted course with Cyrioul, trusting the rest will follow.

Male Human Ranger 1

Bolys consults the map and checks the tracks they've been following to ensure they are still on track.

Survival to track: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 6 + 2 = 23

Male Human Ranger 1

For Bolys, it's less that the laws apply and more that he's grown up in the kind of frontier area that the law just isn't relevant or enforced. One of those areas that sees guardsmen or magistrates maybe once or twice a year, and for the most part has to rely on self-governance. It doesn't breed strong support of heavily enforced society, and results in interesting characters. Heck, I was sorely tempted to make him speak in frontier gibberish, ala Blazing Saddles.

Male Human Ranger 1

Bolys already has "G" in the alignment descriptor. He just doesn't like bandits.

Don't think he'll be embracing the "L" aspect of it. He's very much a lone frontiersman kind of guy.

Male Human Ranger 1

Bolys continues seeking tracks, looking to follow the bandits back to their camp.

Survival: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

Male Human Ranger 1

Okay. For some reason I thought it was all divine classes which had an aura. Maybe because I remember that being brought up for the Warpriest Playtest.

Male Human Ranger 1

Cyrioul's aura might be one of law as opposed to good, since he's Lawful Neutral.

Don't Oracles have an alignment-corresponding aura as well, though?

Male Human Ranger 1

"If you truly want to, be my guest. In my experience, most bandits will only repent long enough to run away, and then try to come back for revenge, but maybe you'll find an honest one."

Male Human Ranger 1

As Sorry, Cyrioul, and Derren discuss, Bolys says, without looking up, "Actually, I see no issue with either of your methods. Nothing we were doing was working, and something needed to be done. Thus, I thank you for your assistance, and would greatly appreciate if one of you could take the lead on interrogations in the future. Would you have any issue doing so?"

Male Human Ranger 1

That works for me. I don't have any issues with it.

Male Human Ranger 1

"Well, Sir Weyland, if you've got a charter from Restov, then we'd like you to feel free to accompany us to the bandit camp, and if you don't, we'll take your assistance anyway. An extra sword is never a bad thing, and these bandits are, like as not, pretty ruthless. I'm Bolys Quinn, tracker and hunter."

He extends a hand to the new arrival.

Male Human Ranger 1

"Straight to the bandits. We may have to retrace our route later, but it would be better if we can catch them unawares, and before they have time to replace their numbers. Let's go."

Nudging Surestep forward, Bolys goes along, checking for tracks as he does, in the general direction of the line drawn on the bandit map.

Survival to track: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (19) + 6 = 25

Bolys is tracking the bandits back to their camp as he goes along.

Male Human Ranger 1

"Because neither of us is the one who stabbed him. The young girl did. The bandit camp should be no more than a day's ride."

Bolys considered the girl's actions last night. She was far harder than he had first surmised, and ruthless for one so young. There is much more there than at first glance. Perhaps I should be cautious around her as well.

Male Human Ranger 1

"Cyrioul, perhaps you should take one of the horses from the bandits. After all, we will travel faster if we are all mounted."

Bolys had replaced the three arrows he had fired with three looted from the bandits. He also stood ready to travel, as the hour was just past dawn.

Male Human Ranger 1

Welcome, Weyland! Pleased to make your acquaintance.

Male Human Ranger 1

GM, when I click on the link for the new map, I get a restricted access message. You may need to change the permission settings so we can look at it.

Male Human Ranger 1

[b]"You're a good sort, Oleg. My kind of people. But, this wasn't the only group of bandits, and there are others who will bother you. I imagine we'll be back here on occasion. If nothin' else, it's likely we'll be coming to you for supplies. Much appreciation for the map."[/b[

Bolys looks over both maps, comparing them so he can make sure he has the route to the bandits' camp.

Male Human Ranger 1

Bolys prepares to bed down for the night, planning to follow the bandits' trail come the dawn.

Male Human Ranger 1

Sorry to hear, but family absolutely comes first. Hope everything goes well for you.

Male Human Ranger 1

Did we get a list of the loot from the bandits? I want to figure out what we're doing with that.

I was thinking we'd take what we need, and give the rest to Oleg. Sound good?

Male Human Ranger 1

"If he doesn't, I'll make one. Let's get this over with."

Bolys will assist with hanging the bandit. If we find ourselves short of beds, he'll see about sleeping in the stable with his bedroll. He doesn't mind roughing it.

Male Human Ranger 1

With a grunt, Bolys picked up the map, went back to the shed, and showed the others. "It's crude, and I'm certain I'll have to look for tracks to verify we're going the right way. But it is, technically, a map. Whether it's worth a quick death or a long one is up to you."

Male Human Ranger 1

"We left that to others. If he does have a map among his belongings, we'll only cut your head off instead of hang you."

Bolys goes over to where Derren and Carina had gathered the belongings and begins looking through, trying to find this map, if it exists.

Male Human Ranger 1

I typed a post the other day, but it apparently got eaten by the forums.

"I can probably track them back, and they can't be more than a day away. We'll wipe out the camp and try to find out more from them. Let's pick a tree and hang him from it. He hasn't given us anything to warrant a quick death."

Male Human Ranger 1

Bolys kicks the dagger embedded in the bandit's leg. "You aren't in a position to negotiate. Now answer the question about your camp, or else we'll string you up."

Intimidate: 1d20 ⇒ 12

Male Human Ranger 1

"That doesn't answer the question about your camp. What direction is it, and are there any rivers or caves or anything near it?"

Male Human Ranger 1

"How many bandits are there at your camp, and what direction is it? Is it near any rivers or caves?"

Male Human Ranger 1

Just someone who actually has an Intimidate check. I have no Charisma and no ranks in it.

Male Human Ranger 1

"Much obliged. " Though he would not have thought of that, he couldn't deny its effectiveness. "Now, I'll start by having your name, and the name of your leader."

Male Human Ranger 1

Thank you, Sorry. I've been waiting for someone to jump in and make a roll.

Male Human Ranger 1

My god, Paizo's dice roller hates me.

Male Human Ranger 1

"You aren't in a position to negotiate. I'm only askin' questions because it'll make our lives easier, but if you won't answer our questions, well, we'll string you up till your feet stop kickin', then find the rest of your bandit group the hard way, and kill 'em just as easily as we did your little gang. Answer my questions, and at the very least you'll get a quick death. If you're truly repentant, you may even get to keep your life.

Now, as I see it, you're starin' at death either way. But I want you to consider something. We killed every member of your group except you without takin' a single hit. If you tell us what we want to know, chances are we'll kill the rest of your group before they have the chance to take revenge. So, looks to me like your best chance to live is to answer our questions. You understand?"

Diplomacy: 1d20 ⇒ 6

Male Human Ranger 1

"Well, then, that's one point against you gettin' out of this alive. Let's start simply. Give me your name, and the name of the leader of this group that came to the Trading Post."

Intimidate: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Male Human Ranger 1

Bolys takes his axe out from its loop on his belt, and casually holds it in his right hand.

"Now, bandit, I will lay this out simply. We are chartered to explore this land and execute those engaged in unrepentant banditry. Refusal to answer our questions will result in us decidin' you are unable to be reformed, and you will be executed by the noose. It is a slow, painful death, as we will simply string you up on a tree rather than waste time building a gallows. If you answer our questions truthfully, and we are satisfied with your answers, you will at the very least be granted a quick death. If you are truly repentant, then your life may even be spared. Now, tell me, what is your name?"

Intimidate: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

There is probably someone better suited to asking questions, with an actual Charisma modifier and maybe ranks in Intimidate.
