Why thank you. I do my best.
Oh, if only simple logic was helpful more often.

"Good to hear it. I'd hate for there to be an accident."
Kappa winks at the woman, a yellow circle briefly winking out. With any luck, she'd appreciate the reprieve.
"Now, let's get this done, shall we? Can't leave this here for too long."

Kappa nods. "Thank you for being so helpful. It's much appreciated."
As Retzack goes in, Kappa takes a moment to halt him. "Retzack...you do realise you're saying to put her in the same cart as the box, don't you? The whole point of using it is so that we don't need anyone to go near it. I'm sure you remember that these mortals are not as hardy as you have come to be, let alone after you've had your fill - leave her so close to it, and we'd have more than one reason to not worry about their escape before long. And if we didn't put her in the cart, one of us would need to carry her, wouldn't we? It's inconvenient in several ways."

"It might be better to show some restraint here - to wait, if even only for a little while. I'm sure we wouldn't want anything happening to her, would we?"

Just what occurs to me from reading that post. I don't mean to get in the way of filling up on blood, but it's better to avoid problems with our associates, hmm?

If the stuff I picked up actually is engine oil, and not something similarly scented, then that has quite the set of implications.
Also, shouldn't that second bit be Retzack, not me?

"So much do to, so little time..." He'd forgotten how much you could do with circles...he'd have to take the time to refresh his memory later. He walks up to the thugs and leans in, flat yellow eyes focused intently. "I have just have one little question for you two myself, which I could do with an answer to." He tuts a few times. "Now...are there any more boxes lying about, by any chance? One of these is bad enough, but it sounds very much possible this might not be the only one about. And if there are more that we should worry about right now...well." Kappa lets out a dark chuckle. "We'd very much love to know. It would be terrible if someone fell prey to one of these boxes because you didn't tell us about any more of them, wouldn't it?"

Kappa shrugs. "'Fraid so. This is strange and particular stuff we're dealing with. It's not like I was looking for a direct supply of water, though - if you can cover it in a thin layer that'll melt quickly, then that should help contain the effects once that happens. We can work on getting more water from there."

"I suppose if you could get the ice to behave like a liquid while it was still frozen that would work too, but, ah...don't. Seriously. It might be better than what it's doing now, but I'd rather not see what it'd pick up from something like that if we don't have to."

Liquid Dreaming, huh...? Now, how did that go before?
"...douse the box. Chuck a bucket of water on it, drop it in a river or toss it in a keg, it doesn't matter too much, but covering it in mundane liquid ought to dampen the effects until a better form of disposal can be achieved if what's doing this is even remotely close to the last thing I saw do something like this. The liquid will enforce its nature on the contents."
Which...I wonder if they used any of that oil on the box.

"Tethys? You think you can get us some water sorted?"

A necromantic box. Well, that's perfectly natural after finding out about that strange oil...
Come to think of it, perhaps that wasn't really oil.
That's a problem for another time though. For now, the field needed to be dealt with. "Well, I've seen things like this a few times, but if I was going to say what I think the best idea is right now..."

Kappa gives a little nod to Eldin. "That's all for now. I'm sure there's more to see, but for now, I've got business to attend to. Just don't be surprised if you have visitors again later. Be seeing you." With a wink, Kappa exits the building, and starts heading to the area Adir said they were going to.
I wonder what I'll find.

---------

Well. They've been busy, haven't they?
Between the signs that Tethys has been at work, the unconscious bodies, and the box there that keeps getting funny looks, Kappa's just a little bit curious about what's just happened.
"This is quite the scene, isn't it? What's the situation?"

Sorry for the inactivity, I'm just...not sure what to do next? Where to go?
I do want to continue with this, but I'm pretty stuck here, to be honest. Probably should've admitted that earlier.
Even if I continue looking over this place, I'm going to need to move on at some point. I just don't have much ideas for a thread to follow other than the embassy, and I don't think it's a good idea to head back there yet.
...I swear, I need to think more carefully on what orders I get. The idea's meant to be 'strange, confusing and particular', not 'wildly derailing reckless vandalism'.

How curious this is. A mysterious mix of blood and oil, and a second searcher of the room that is as of yet unidentified. And in this, mysteries to solve.
One of the better parts of this, he has to admit. A good mystery always made for a nice way to pass the time.
First, the mystery of blood and oil. Just what was that oil? Where does it come from? What might you achieve by mixing it with blood? Hmm...perhaps some of the medical texts that were left behind might provide some enlightenment as well. Kappa looks for some choice pages as he thinks.
Spout Lore: 2d6 ⇒ (4, 3) = 7

Once he's finished looking for conclusions on that, he walks up to Eldin. "Now, I'm aware who's been here recently, but would you be able to tell me if the doctor or his room had any visitors before this incident? Or perhaps, if anyone has simply asked after him?"

Kappa tips his hat. "Thanks for the help. I'll get to work. Sooner this is all cleared up, the sooner we can all get on with our business, right?" With a wink from one of the yellow circles in the dark he calls his eyes, Kappa walks into the room, careful to ensure he doesn't disturb anything. Right then. Back to my known work. So...what's lying around in here, then?

All this stuff lying about, the scene that's been made here, there's definitely something interesting going on. And it was Kappa's job to find out what. He'd be reading the papers, checking for things hidden away, looking for telltale signs as to who's been here and just what led up to this...and that would start with poking at that mattress. Maybe I'll be able to pick up on residue if there was something in there. Suppose it's easier when you can absorb things.

Before taking off to cover the hotel, Kappa slips a watertight container to Retzack. In hushed tones, he informs him it holds:
- A single stoppered vial (marked with a date from a few years ago) from a small box labeled "Invis."
- A handful of thunderstones.
- A piece of paper with a few addresses written on it in a slightly shaky hand.
"They had this in a box with a "Security" label someone had painted over, hidden with some uniforms and such. Make of that what you will."
"Do exercise proper discretion with these, would you? As ever, some things should not reach certain circles." Or Burke in general, for that matter.

The options he was faced with weren't great. He avoids the smoke, he gets flushed out like they wanted. He'd be able to mist himself so that they couldn't see him specifically, but they'd know where he was, to say nothing of the trouble that'd come about in future from what they could see. And that was without considering actually getting away.

Then again, that smoke could well do all sorts of nasty things. Harm him, tag him, leave a trail behind him...sure, he'd have an easy passage out if he got past it, but was it really worth it to let that stuff near him?
This sucked.

He needed to think. What that smoke did was important here. So, he thought. What was that smoke? What did it do? What would happen if he broke the rod?

Better not to blast the valve. It'd get him down, but then they'd know he was down there. Best way to throw off suspicion was to find another way down and meet up with the others.

Kappa starts looking for other ways to get down undetected. He wasn't averse to going down via the outside of the building if he had to. With all the broken windows, it was probably a convenient way to get down quickly without making further mess.

Someone wanted these hidden. Too bad for them that I was the one looking.
Right now's not a good time to give the uniforms and the nightsticks a proper look over, and he can't really bring them with him. The vial, thunderstones and paper would need a container so they weren't impacted by his inner liquid, but he was in a storeroom.
Kappa gets searching again. Once he finds proper waterproof containment (Is it really so unreasonable to try and find a decent scroll case? Come on, one of these boxes!) he stuffs everything but the uniforms and nightsticks inside, puts the hidden box back, and finds a place that looks right for the box he dislodged getting in. All that done, he returns to the vents, replacing the cover behind him.

From there, he snoops around the third floor, checking for activity and targets of opportunity from inside the vent system.

If I'm asked for something like this again, I'll try not to say something liable to consume massive amounts of time and utterly derail everything.
...maybe we should set some ground rules on how to handle this when the situation comes up again? That seems like a good idea.

Thinking about how this might develop, I find the idea of somehow convincing at least one of the others to go about breaking windows with me funny.

Commands from my patron tend to be immediate, obvious, and patently weird. To give prior examples, spilling paint everywhere, or squashing a pigeon on someone's windowsill.
Though I will say that a voice from a dead body doesn't fit the portfolio of (known) command delivery vectors for my patron, unless you can explain how a dead body ripples.

...well, one the one hand, the others were looking over the body. He could probably entrust that to them.
On the other hand, he'd just been told to smash all the windows of the embassy. Which...alright, it seemed like something he would be told to do, but a voice from a dead body didn't seem to be the style of his patron.
He wasn't about to argue though. Fey don't always stick to their own rules, after all, and even if it wasn't them he still didn't want to get on the bad side of whoever it actually was by ignoring them.

Oh my god, I'm dying. I love RSS right now.

Bond's fine. I have no idea what that means in more detail, but I have no objections.

Mixing up your games there, aren't we? I don't recall black mages in VI!

I don't know what you are insinuating and my friends in Balamb will back me up on this one.

But in all seriousness, I don't remember any vampires or status quo worshipping paladins in VI either. Though it could be argued that Adir is obviously related to a certain boy from the Veldt. Overall, I think we're good here!

Anyway, in actual seriousness, I'm good to go. Let's do this!

Paranoia fuel. I love it - let's go with that.

I'm not trying to hide what everyone can see I am. Your bond's fine. I am, however, trying to smoke and mirrors people so that they don't look too hard into my true origins, because even I don't know anything about those. I can only guess that they're really, really fey, which could cause a lot of problems for me, to say nothing of the actual details.

As for what kind of manifestation I am...well, take your pick. I'm a liquid shadow thing that makes rain. I told you I'm a Lumin, but what does that mean, really? Do Lumins actually exist, or did I make that up? If I didn't, do I fit the profile for a real Lumin?

Whatever you're thinking, go for it. I'm not stopping you. Just be aware that Kappa's going to try and deflect any attempts at probing his origins, let alone his other secrets.

Only one question I'd like to pose to you, while you're thinking about bonds - do you hear the same voices I do? They might not be talking to you, but can you hear them anyway?

Hazard is...defined in a sidebar in the Channeler class.

My PDF copy of GrimWorld doesn't have a sidebar definition, just "(environmental effect)" under its listing as a Tag. That's why I feel uncomfortable calling my Ice Shield a Barrier+Hazard, because it sounds strange to be holding on to an "environmental effect".

Is there another PDF floating around that's different?

I get the feeling you've only got access to the classes, rather than the actual Grim World pdf. I remember getting my hands on a sheet that features the classes in standard playbook format, which I get the feeling is what you have - the actual Grim World pdf doesn't display it's classes in standard format.

Whatever the case is, it's pg. 29, in the GM advice sidebar:

Grim World wrote:

Tag: Hazard

Think of this as an environmental effect (possibly even a permanent one). It’s dealt with mostly fictionally instead of mechanically. It could be a ring of fire or an orb of water. When combined with a Barrier tag, perhaps it’s a wall of ice that gives protection when you crouch behind it.

Make more sense? You're pretty much putting something into the world that sticks around and that people will have to deal with while it's still there.

As for this...

What about your racial move? You could take the GW Human move, we could create one based on a Zeitgeist theme feat, or I'm open to other suggestions.
Again, my PDF copy doesn't list *any* racial moves for Channeler.

Grim World has racial moves separate from its playbooks. You have all your standard playbook stuff, then an additional race move that's consistent no matter which class you're playing.

The human's race move is great - you can take one of your starting moves, and swap it with a starting move from another class that's not in use. For example, assume you're swapping out Summon Elemental. It doesn't have to be Summon Elemental, but I'm using that as the example. You'd be able to swap that with Keeper of Curios from Inverse World's Collector, or Bend Bars, Lift Gates from the Fighter, but not with the Druid's Shapeshifter, since Adir is a Druid.
Whatever you swap out, you can take later as an Advanced Move if you level up, so if you wanted the ability to summon elementals later, you could get that ability when you levelled up.

Everything clear?

You can buy Grim World here from DTRPG. It's $15.

What do you look like? Can you pass for one of the humanoids unaided, and if not, (how) do you usually try?

Kappa's about the right shape, but it's pretty clear they aren't any of the known species if you get a good look. Rather than try and pretend they don't look strange, Kappa tells everyone they're a Lumin - a half-fey with a close natural connection to either light or dark. "You should see my cousin - you might have a hard time seeing me, but a few minutes with them and you'd have trouble seeing anything else for a while!"

Not to say he doesn't cover up. He usually goes about in a patterned blue robe and a large, pointed hat that does a very good job of covering him, and helping him draw a lot less attention than if he went about without it.

The military held a public demonstration of a new technology recently (a magic-and-technology fusion), but the demo almost got called off. What were they showing off, and what complication or interference are they trying to keep quiet?

As Kappa heard it, there were piloted magitek armour prototypes on schedule to be shown that day, capable of putting incredible levels of magical firepower and physical might in the hands of mundane soldiers. They were fitted with a complex, secure combination of magical and mundane measures to ensure only the designated pilot could operate one.

But apparently, a brightly coloured and undeniably insane clown managed to bypass all of them and steal one of the prototypes. That...raises questions.

Hmmm, what do I do about bonds?

I'm not sure if I should be friends with Adir, or afraid of what they might find out.

I appreciate that Retzack's helping me fool everyone, but I can't help but wonder why.

You have a point, but you conveniently omitted that the one person in this case could plausibly be older than the planet, and a minimum of seven times my age.
...but I can't resist the double act. Let's do it.
Call me Kappa, Retzack. Together, we can be The Blacks, the immortal duo.

If you want something heavy, try the Constabrewlary. Dwarven kick, without the dwarven hangover, though make sure you have someone to keep an eye on you after your first drink. There's a reason it got the name.
I'll let you figure out how many of the stories you've heard can be blamed on that ale.

My personal favourite is the Silver Apple brew. It's a little taste of heaven, and I wouldn't be surprised if it literally was that. Accounts vary, but there's always a few points of consistency between the descriptions from people that have tasted it - it's light, it's airy, it leaves you feeling like you're floating, and it WILL be the best thing you've ever tasted.
If you can help me get a sponsor from the Gilded Barrel so I can get a lifetime's supply of that stuff...
I'm not sure what to promise. I can't think of anything that would be sufficient repayment.
It's just that good.

I'll help set up a deal with the brewery. Hell, I'll help you sneak in to get a taste of the goods, but you better bring me some back!

Starting to wonder what would be more fun - trying to keep Retzack fooled about my age, or having him help me keep everyone else fooled!

Your drive is 'advance the agenda of your god.' Do you serve one of the Fey Titans, or some other entity?:
"Oh, they're Fey alright, but I've never met them personally to be able to tell you anything more than that."
"Time to time, I hear voices from the things that ripple. I've been lucky enough that nobody else seems to be able to hear them so far, because they tell me to do some very strange things indeed that so far, I've just been able to pass off as part of my own set of quirks."

"I'm not sure how I'd explain it if someone discovered that a voice I heard from a puddle of blood told me to squash a pigeon on someone's windowsill. Or that spilling all that paint wasn't a flight of whimsy, and I did it because the pond outside told me to.
With difficulty, I imagine. But when you work for Fey, that's just part of the risks."

How old are you?:
"43, maybe? I think that's how many years ago I first woke up."
"I like to tell people I'm 627 though, just to see what reaction I get - some people start throwing questions at me, others are surprised at my 'youth'. It's quite amusing."
"There are a few people that know the truth of my age, but otherwise pretending to be so old helps with the mystique surrounding my existence. It also helps deflect any attempts at finding out just how I came to be. I don't know myself, but I feel like it'll end badly for me if they knew."

Before you joined the High Constabulary, you did something that convinced them you were trustworthy. What was it?:
"About 32 years ago, there was a massive downpour. I'd been told to head to a warehouse, and suffocate the first person to try to get into the building. With all the rain, it was easy enough to pull it off without my apparent victim noticing me."
"After that, I was to take them to a nearby building, and reveal myself to the person there."

"As it turned out, I'd just brought a notorious serial killer into the hands of an officer of the Constabulary who was in the middle of investigations. That got my foot in the door. A few more such occurrences, and they trusted me as a contact, gathering information for them that nobody else could ever have acquired, for the low, low price of food and assorted baubles. 6 years later, they trusted me enough to give me jobs working alongside their groups. 11 years later, I was unofficial staff. 4 years later, I was finally officially a part of their number."

"I didn't do something. I did everything. It took me 21 years for them to trust me enough to make me a member of the High Constabulary, 3 more years for them to trust me full stop, and 5 more to earn the badge that marked out that I was actually an important part of the force. That totals up to 29 years spent getting where I am."
"I did a lot of hard work getting into a position of trust, doing their work for lower rates than any other would have. Only reason I originally started taking standard payment was to cover costs for the equipment that I was starting to need, and the random jumble of things that my patron wanted me to get."
"Originally. I've found a few pleasures for myself since then."

What is your favorite place in or near the city of Flint?:
"Surprisingly enough, a brewery. There's a place known as the Gilded Barrel Brewery. Not that big a name, but their product is excellent...not that I can have much to drink of anything, since being made of liquid apparently leads to you being very easily intoxicated. The processes that go on there simply fascinate me."

Pretty sure Bastian Kray's not his pitch for this campaign. He could be used here, but I don't think a version of him has been pitched for this one yet.

And you forgot Slyness! Or as I know them, Shyness! Hey, it's Sora!

So, the list looks more like this:

ZenFox42: Channeler (concept)
Infernal Zero: Black Kappa
MCKhaos: Burke Hoffa
Slyness: Adir Bloodmoon
Deliverance: ???
Atlas2112: Retzack, the Black

Which assuming all the characters crop up, is 6. Still in feasible range if I was judging, though I wouldn't go for any more. In the end, it's Sbodd's call though.
It'd be great if we all made it though - I know just about everyone here!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Doing good! Had a couple of players that I needed people to take the places of, and I have improvements to make on my end, but when your crew managed to set a magical library on fire and later collectively create a place in which time and space are twisted up which I just cannot wait to use to mess with them, I'd say it's all going well.

Also, I have the alias and sheet stuff for the Rainlord done already. All things considered, I found myself quite amused by the fact I could get a "badge of rank" from my gear list considering the circumstances of the campaign here.
Yeah, I grabbed that rather quickly.
