The First Seeker’s meeting room is a lavish space, with several
lush couches and armchairs surrounding a wide, low table.
First Seeker Luwazi Elsebo appears uncharacteristically
extravagant, having exchanged her typical stationwear for a
sleek, fashionable suit in a shade of copper that matches the
Starfinder Society logo emblazoned on the table. Behind her
stands the towering vesk leader of the Acquisitives faction,
wearing a suit of ceremonial armor.
Luwazi smiles and gestures to the seats. “A pleasure to
see you all. I trust you’ve heard about tonight’s gala? I have a
rather important announcement to make, so we’ve decided to
use the opportunity to entertain and impress representatives
of the various interests who have helped the Starfinder Society
through our setbacks with the Scoured Stars Incident.
“That’s where you come in. As some of the shining
stars of the newest Starfinder Society agents, I’d like
to have you mingle with the guests so they can see
for themselves what we’ve been able to accomplish.
It’s nothing too fancy; I’d just like you all to be polite
and talk about some of your experiences with the
Society so far. We’re expecting some government
dignitaries, investors, corporate interests, and the
like, so be sure to stay on your best behavior. Also,
don’t be afraid to brag a bit—it’s
our goal to impress them.”

“But don’t be stupid,” the
armored vesk breaks in.
Luwazi Elsebo glances over
her shoulder and grins. “Have you
all met Radaszam? He’s certainly
someone else you should be trying
to impress.”
Radaszam scowls. “Events like
this never go as planned. Luwazi’s
contracted one of my merc outfits,
the Obsidian Spiders, to provide security
for the night. I want to make sure that if
anything goes down, you’re working with
my agents, rather than us all tripping over
one another. So stay alert, but if anything
happens, make sure you’re talking to me about
it rather than jumping in blindly.”
The First Seeker nods and picks up the
datapad. “I’ve singled out five guests

your priority tonight, so I’ve compiled basic information about each of them here. Things will start up in about an hour in the Skyreach Room. Any questions before we go?”

What is the Scoured Stars incident?

Spoiler:
Radaszam shakes his head
and Luwazi sighs. “Not even a year ago, the Starfinder Society sent
most of our agents and ships in a ground-breaking endeavor to
a region known as the Scoured Stars, but once they arrived, we
lost all communication with them. We haven’t been able to contact
them since, and the entire region has been sealed off behind some
kind of force field. It was a disaster for the Society; we lost most of
our agents and our assets, and we made it through only thanks to
support from the people who we’re entertaining at tonight’s gala.”

Do we need to dress up?

Spoiler:
“If you’d like, but it’s not necessary.
You’re Starfinders, and there’s a certain air of excitement that
comes along with the armor and gear.”

What’s the big announcement?

Spoiler:
Luwazi laughs. “It would spoil
all the fun if I told you now, wouldn’t it? Sorry, you’ll have
to wait a few hours like everyone else.”

Are you expecting trouble?

Spoiler:
“I’m always
expecting trouble,” Radaszam says, but a
moment later he shrugs. “I don’t know of any
plans specifically targeting this event, but my
team and I have our eyes and ears open.”

Many adventurers have dared to explore the Mwangi Expanse.
Some die, others recover valuable treasures, but almost all
of them pass through the walled city of Kibwe. Kibwe is a
flourishing center of trade, home to tribal folk from a plethora
of races. Humans, elves, and even a few lizardfolk merchants
wave to passersby, eager to scam gold from unwary travelers.
A Mwangi Pathfinder named Tuukna waits beneath the
central pavilion just up ahead.

“Good to see you, Pathfinders! I bring dire news from the
Expanse.” Tuukna gestures to seats on benches beneath the
blossoming trees before continuing his story. “I just received
word that a band of traveling merchants was found dead after
exploring the nearby ruins of the once proud city of Dokeran.
Our agents across the Mwangi Expanse claim an eerie song
echoes from the ruins, which were previously assumed to be
abandoned. We have reason to believe this song was responsible
for the destruction of Dokeran decades ago.
“If this region is ever going to be a safe place for travelers
and explorers, I need you to find out what still lurks within the
ruins. Head northwest, toward the rivers flowing out of Lake
Ocota. I’ve arranged for you to meet a witch doctor named
Nangi along the River Bdonge. This ancient mystic knows
Dokeran well. I believe he will be willing to serve as your guide
through the ruins. Give him this copper coin and tell him
Tuukna sent you.
“Should you come across a physical copy of the song heard
from within the ruins—be it sheet music, a cursed instrument,
or anything else unusual—return it to your venture-captain
immediately. If this song is the fabled Song of Extinction, we
may have some hard times ahead of us.”

You find yourselves in the village of Lankshorn.

A large settlement of well-kept, stonebuilt houses, clustered around a tall steepled
church and a cobbled market square. At the rear of the village,a slope rises towards Dolmenwood,
which looms ominously, a reminder of Lankshorn’s position on the verge
of the wild. A low hill is prominently visible, just before the eaves of the
wood, upon which a ring of tall stones stands.

Situated on the market square, opposite the church, the village inn is a high gabled,
wooden building of overhanging eaves and many-hued, lacquered
panels. Above the wide, rounded front door hangs the sign—depicting a white
stoat with prominent red horns reclining on a luxurious purple couch—and
the skull of a goat.

It reads the Horned Stoat's Rest Inn.

Some of the humans on the street have one goat hoof or small horns.

A short man "man" with ferns for hair and burlap around his waist and over his chest pulls a donkey to the market square.

Ensconced in a private meeting room at the famous Farseer
Tower in exotic Katapesh, Venture-Captain Wulessa Yuul
wastes no time commencing her briefing.
“This has all the makings of a magnificent embarrassment,”
she begins sourly. “The Grand Lodge recently sent a delegation
to the mansion house of Temel Passad in Kerse. Passad is an
enormously wealthy devotee of the Prophecies of Kalistrade,
and he happens to possess the only known copy of the Mutani
Manual of Martial Mastery in the Inner Sea region. The
delegates were tasked with obtaining this rare tome, by either
purchasing or leasing it.
“By all accounts Passad is a difficult man, but the delegation
proved… stupendously inadequate to the task. Not only did
they fail to secure the manual, but they also managed to
grossly insult the merchant. Two of the representatives were
manhandled off the property and taunted by Passad that under
no circumstances would he part with the Mutani Manual unless
the Society could earn it, challenging us to take it from a hidden
location among his many holdings throughout the region. The
third delegate, who happens to be one of the foremost experts
on all things Tian, was detained by Passad for what he termed
‘an extended conversation on the finer points of ambassadorial
etiquette.’ He’s invoked an obscure Druman statute involving
foreign embassies, making this kidnapping perfectly legal in
his government’s eyes.

The city of Padiskar near the northern tip of the Isle of
Jalmeray is not so much a city as a ring of small villages
surrounding a massive, howling ruin, from which terrifying
screams of whatever the Vudrani Maharaja Khiben-Sald left
there in ancient times can still be heard. The new Venture-
Captain Vasuman Mihir maintains a small safe house for
the Pathfinder Society here, taking over from Padiskar’s
longtime Venture-Captain Aamina Shahrazad, who was
recently murdered by men loyal to Zamir, a bandit lord and
rumored Aspis Consortium agent who operates out of the
nearby jungles.
Venture-Captain Mihir’s briefing was short and serious.
“This is a fake scepter of the arclords,” he said, hefting a
bejeweled staff in his hands bearing glowing runes across
its surface. “You will lead a caravan toward Niswan carrying
this false relic and several crates of minor magical items. My
porter, a young boy named Waman, will give you a detailed
travel itinerary, which you must follow with care. Except that it
is almost certain that you will be ambushed before you reach
your destination, since young Waman is a spy for the Aspis
Consortium and has sold out and murdered a dozen or more
of our brethren and associates, including our former venturecaptain—
I’m sure of it. The scepter is bait in a trap, and you
are the teeth. Do not let on to Waman that you know of his
transgressions—we need him to lead us to his master, the
bandit lord Zamir. We’ll either make Zamir our man or disrupt
his business permanently. I’ll deal with Waman myself once
this affair is resolved.”
Venture-Captain Mihir held up a second item, a plain-looking
but easily recognizable wayfinder. “This wayfinder is also a
fake, although unlike the scepter, it does have real power.
The dial always points to the scepter.” Mihir demonstrated,
moving the wayfinder in a circle around the scepter, the needle
pointing unerringly at it.
“Waman gave Zamir information that enabled the bandit
fool to steal artifacts from dozens of our caravans and even
from safe houses such as this one. Zamir has a method of
disassembling the artifacts so that he can smuggle them off
the island with ease, bound for ports of call in Cheliax. What
we do not know is where Zamir is, since he never attacks with
his men.”
“I gave Waman the information about your journey, so at
some point along the route, Zamir’s bandits will ambush you.
Previous experience indicates that his bandits will not kill if
they don’t have to. Let them steal the scepter. You must put
up a small struggle, maybe even kill or injure several of his
men, but most importantly you must let them escape and
they must escape with the scepter.
“Give them a few hours after the ambush to escape and then
use the wayfinder to track Zamir to his hideout. Zamir is an
arrogant man whose loyalties lie with whoever can make him
famous to the people of Jalmeray. Right now he believes the
Aspis Consortium is the answer. You will either convince him
that the Society is the answer—as he could be a very powerful
ally in the region—or you’ll end his operations for good. How
you handle it, I leave to you. Good luck on your journey and
may the gods guide your hand.”
