I've been looking through the store and the Pathfinder Playtest page and can't find a product page for the playtest, specifically the PDF.

Usually there's "unavailable until xxth-mmm" text in place of where the Buy PDF link is, but where's the product page?

Advice for moderators - if a thread (especially a big thread) deviates into different subjects from the thread's original subject, then interject and ask for the conversation to be moved to a new thread and for that thread to go back on-topic.

Example, if the thread is talking about the effects of a spell that is worth banning, and 2 or 3 or 5 people start talking about immediate actions are at fault, that's a textbook candidate that the idea of clarifying how immediate actions work should be a separate thread.

Paizo's messageboards don't have an upvote/downvote system to indicate relevance of posts, so this kind of thing is really important.

I've been less active on the messageboards recently, but it's dawned on me that this has been a problem since forever, and I'm certainly noticing it now. I've heard from other people in the past that they stay away from the messageboards, and I'm pretty sure the tangents are one of the reasons why - and it's something that can be dealt with (without large changes to swaths of code).

GMs really need more help on how to make maps for their games (as part of learning how to GM, or how to GM better).

Personally I was so stumped at the techniques others were using to make maps, because the solution is usually either to find some way to export it then print it (and that's putting it very simply), or to just buy a blank flipmat and draw it (which is what I see most people do).

As a result of that, I researched it and wrote up this guide which I've posted before, but I can't remember where I put that - somewhere in Pathfinder Society GM Discussion, because that's the most appropriate place.

Then there are threads like this asking for (and getting) advice, which will eventually disappear over time as well.

Is it possible to add a hardcoded section to the site somewhere with these guides? Link to your map product pages so that it increases sales while you're at it - we want to buy them along the way. You guys will know how to deal with exporting and using maps from PDFs (your map-packs, PFS scenarios etc) for games better than we do.

Take a look at where this old link for pregens goes to. Needs a redirect to http://paizo.com/products/btpy9a64.

because apparently that makes them less likely to cheat.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but I think the Pathfinder RPG General Discussion board could benefit from an Unchained subforum, judging by all the user-tagged subject lines that currently dominate it.

I'm assuming Shamans are prepared spellcasters, but the closest wording I can find to confirm that is this:

Spirit Magic wrote:
A shaman can spontaneously cast a limited number of spells per day beyond those she prepared ahead of time. She has one spell slot per day of each shaman spell level she can cast, not including orisons. She can choose these spells from the list of spells granted by her spirits (see the spirit class feature and the wandering spirit class feature) at the time she casts them. She can enhance these spells using any metamagic feat that she knows, using up a higher-level spell slot as required by the feat and increasing the time to cast the spell (see Spontaneous Casting and Metamagic Feats).

But then what does this mean with regards to Spirit Magic?

It doesn't sound like I can sacrifice any spell to cast a spirit spell (like a cleric can sacrifice a spell for a cure spell), and the first two sentences sound like it's just a prepared spell that needs a full round action to cast like a spontaneous spell?

Talk to me like I'm new to the game, thanks :)

I played part 1 before playing part 2, and my reporting is showing part 2 as "Player has already played scenario at session # 11 of event # 8467 ... on March 18, 2012." The game that it's looking at is actually the slot I played part 1.

Shadow Lodge 3/5

The new rules in the APG provided specific rules for how to do these maneuvers.

How would you rule if a player wanted to do one of these?

Drag seems like a standout, because it wouldn't be terribly uncommon for a player wanting to drag a character away from danger - potentially saving their life.

Is a GM in their rights to ignore the APG rules even if they know how it works? Or should these be included in the core campaign as exceptions?

Surely they shouldn't be impossible (except for maybe Reposition?) - the characters are clearly capable of doing them as if they were doing them in reality.

Shadow Lodge

Interesting change merging the two Grand Lodge forums.

Side effect - in summary view when you're looking over all the messageboards, it only shows 6 threads that were last posted on - that's less than 24 hours worth of threads that need to last a couple of days for players to see them to sign up for games. Merging the two forums means people will see less of both local and online games.

This was actually a problem before the merge (notably with how long they'd still be showing); seems to have gotten worse now.

Warhorn's now been updated so that all timezones show up with GMT + or - your timezone.

There was an issue on Warhorn where the time for a session would show some timezones would show up strangely.

I noticed this when I tried scheduling a game in GMT+10:00, and the site would automatically convert this to "EST". That's technically correct in Australia - also known as "AEST", but once you've seen all the funky names for timezones (EST, PST, CST, MST, EDT etc), you'll quickly see the advantage of listing timezones in GMT (or UTC) format.

Shadow Lodge 3/5

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for 5th to 9th level characters (Tiers: 5–6 and 8–9).

GM: Avatar

How to Play:

Sign up here with a level 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9 PFS character.
You can use a level 7 preregenerated character in this game if you don't have a character who is at a high enough level.

Please try to show up 15-60 minutes beforehand so we're on schedule; starting early is an option if everyone's ready (unanimously).

This game or your character can be discussed anytime via the chat room on IRC - the room is regularly active (but not 24/7, say hi and alt-tab!). If you've signed up, it'd be cool to come say hi. We like questions and we like talking Pathfinder.

Scenario Plot:

When a Pathfinder team in the godless nation of Rahadoum disappears, the Pathfinder Society sends the PCs to investigate. Deep beneath the sands of the small village of Wadi al-Hesr, a long imprisoned evil—responsible in part for the destruction of an ancient empire—now stirs and threatens the entire region with a deadly plague. Can the Pathfinders survive a sinister game of cat-and-mouse and escape with their lives?

Where Dark Things Sleep is the second scenario in the The Heresy of Man campaign arc. It is the sequel to Pathfinder Society Scenario #2-06: The Heresy of Man—Part I: The First Heresy and is followed by Pathfinder Society Scenario #2-09: The Heresy of Man—Part III: Beneath Forgotten Sands.

Can we have a list of classes that synergise with the new classes for the purposes of retraining?

Something similar to this one for the Advanced Class Guide.

Retraining has become a staple rule of the game - whenever there's new classes introduced, we need these included - especially for playtests involving PFS gameplay.

Disguise Weapon, ACG p180 wrote:
You make one manufactured weapon look like a different manufactured weapon of the same size and relative encumbrance (light, one-handed, or two-handed). For example, you could make a Small greatsword look like a Small quarterstaff, a Medium club, or a Large dagger. Even the appearance of an improvised weapon is possible. The extent of the apparent change is up to you. You could add or obscure a minor feature or make the item look like it is composed of different materials (stone, wood, adamantine, and so on). The spell does not provide any of the abilities of the chosen form, nor does it alter the perceived tactile or audible properties of the item or how it is wielded. A creature that interacts with the glamer may attempt a Will save to recognize it as an illusion.

What are the disguising limits of this spell?

Doesn't saying that it can take on the appearance of an improvised weapon suggest that it has no limits? That's the nature of being "improvised".

It seems you could turn your greatsword into a barstool, or a rope, or a shovel. Or a dagger into an inkpen, a lantern, or a pitcher.

No idea what to do about armor (up to 13 AC without taking a feat? in melee!) and I'm stuck with weapons as far as I can tell; they all seem terrible but need them for the Inspired enchantment.

Any advice is welcome, thanks in advance :o)

Clerics get domains. The APG talks about subdomains which can be swapped out for specific domains. But as far as I can see, in neither of these books, I've seen talk about certain restrictions on some deities which don't allow subdomains for their relative domain.

Gozreh, for example, has the Animal domain, replaceable with the Feather subdomain.

This wiki page seems to think Gozreh gets Animal but not Feather.
This comment on Tark's Cleric guide points out that Tark incorrectly allowed the Feather domain for Gozreh, which Tark later agrees with and corrects.
This comment and its following comments suggest every divine caster might be looking at that wiki page.

However.

There are other comments around the place suggesting (maybe wrongly?) that everyone looked at the wiki and the wiki maybe forgot to include it by accident.

This is just one example; they all seem to work like this according to that wiki, because deities all have 5 domains and they only list about 6 or 7 subdomains, even though every domain has 2-3 associated subdomains.

The million dollar question:

Where's the wording about only specific deities allowed to take specific subdomains? Especially for the core deities?

1 person marked this as FAQ candidate.

The Sorcerer's Arcana bloodline, which can be gained by an Exploiter Wizard (or Arcanist) with the Bloodline Development exploit, does this:

Quote:
Arcane Bond (Su): At 1st level, you gain an arcane bond, as a wizard equal to your sorcerer level. Your sorcerer levels stack with any wizard levels you possess when determining the powers of your familiar or bonded object. This ability does not allow you to have both a familiar and a bonded item. Once per day, your bond item allows you to cast any one of our spells known (unlike a wizard's bonded item, which allows him to cast any one spell in his spellbook).

Does this bolded section mean that it doesn't work with a non-multiclassed Exploiter Wizard, since he uses prepared spells from a spellbook?

Or are prepared spells allowable in this case?

Does the bonus only apply if 2 people are jumping on the trampoline at the same time? Is it that big?

With regards to this FAQ

Quote:

Do items like staves carry charges to the next scenario played?

Yes.

This can be interpreted in two ways:

1) At the beginning of every new scenario, your staff is fully charged, even if you spent all the charges at the end of the previous scenario. This is due to the indeterminate amount of time between scenarios. The FAQ is to prevent staves always having 0 charges at the beginning of a scenario.

2) At the beginning of a scenario, you have only as many charges that you "carried over" from the end of the previous scenario, including any spells you cast back into it.

Which is correct? (and if you're not Mike or John, what's your reasoning?)

The Grand Lodge Online Play messageboard, in summary view, doesn't seem to keep threads visible for very long - threads updated as late as yesterday aren't showing.

This isn't a once-off problem, but games are usually scheduled anywhere between about 3 days to 1-2 weeks in advance. At the moment, Conline is one of the biggest talked about issues, and Arthur's thread is hidden unless you (know to) click the thread open.

Can the settings be tweaked to show more threads and/or increase their longevity? It's vital to encourage people to post games in there to begin with.

Shadow Lodge

Someone in another thread found this little-known nugget from the Core Rulebook's Combat Chapter under Combat Maneuvers:

Performing a Combat Maneuver wrote:
When performing a combat maneuver, you must use an action appropriate to the maneuver you are attempting to perform. While many combat maneuvers can be performed as part of an attack action, full-attack action, or attack of opportunity (in place of a melee attack), others require a specific action. Unless otherwise noted, performing a combat maneuver provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of the maneuver. If you are hit by the target, you take the damage normally and apply that amount as a penalty to the attack roll to perform the maneuver.

It seems strange that combat maneuvers, while interesting, are generally speaking considered to be less viable than straight damage over the long-haul of a Pathfinder's career - yet, there is rather large limitation looming over anyone who tries to make a combat maneuver.

It's not the same with attacks. Even ranged attacks which do provoke in melee don't get a penalty to hit.

Seems like an oversight in design? I wouldn't blame anyone, since I only just heard about this for the first time the other day after years of play!

I'll likely be GMing a game this Friday night or Saturday morning Eastern Australian time (the UTC time will either be Fri 2/5 8.30am or Sat 3/5 11.30pm if that helps with your timezone conversions).

If you might be keen to play, let me know here which scenario, which tier/subtier and which timeslot you'd prefer and I'll try and tailor towards the preferences. This is not a signup; you don't need to commit to play here until signup begins.

If you're registered on pfrpg.com.au, let me know your username, and I'll also check against scenarios you've played before when email invites go out (you won't receive an invite if you've marked off that you've played the scenario before).

I'm leaning towards a 1-5, but I'll give priority to your preferences.

I'm asking because a lot of reviewers like leaving x.5 stars and are left to just "say so" in their reviews. The totals for the product already add up to x.5 stars sometimes, so it doesn't seem like this would be a stretch to implement.

Trying to get a consensus for how long you try to allocate for your typical game (or a range) in online play.

Obviously you can't stick to it every time, but it's good to get an idea of what kind of timing you like to stick to if you can help it.

For me, I aim for 5 to 6 hours on average.

Short scenarios (like We Be Goblins) might run as low as 4 hours.
Long scenarios (like some 7-11s) might run as long as 8.

If so, you wouldn't have missed release 3 (R3) of the pre-alpha of the game, which is the first iteration to include multiplayer over the weekend.

For all the talk about MMO's dying, it's certainly not happening here. SotA has somehow managed to capture the same sense of wonder and community that happened when we first started playing Ultima Online (UO).

Combat isn't in until R4 (another agonising month wait!), so I can't say how that might work, but it doesn't sound like they intend to go for the same sort of WoW setup every other MMO implements.

At the moment, all you can really do is explore, jump, emote, chat, craft, steal, buy and sell. That's only mechanically speaking, and that's only a side highlight of what everyone was getting into.

There is just something cool about being able to make fun of who you're playing, whether it's raising a toast to the devs with a mug of mead you've bought, finding ways to jump onto rooftops, talking about the ridiculous size of the great sword you're holding, or trying to hold up someone who's got some equipment better than yours (even though neither attacking nor trading are in the game).

I've explained in two posts today how to report games for PFS here and here.

The steps to report a game just aren't that intuitive - when I first started playing PFS, I had someone else report my games under their event for about 6 or 8 sessions.

I think the way to reporting PFS games really needs to be much clearer, maybe with a more direct link from the PFS page or the sidebar/topbar.

The everyman needs an easy way to get to it - there might be more PFS games being played and not being reported because of this.

As in, I've got the radio button, then below it, the name of the list. To the right of both of those (centered alignment between the radio button and list name) is how many items in the list.

The reason I ask is that one of my weaknesses as a GM is thinking up villain taunts on the fly, which I think is a great part of combat, especially when you're up against an important villain in the game.

If you've got a friend or 3, this is a pretty great, simple game. All you do is race each other.

You're a batman-like superhero, you can run, jump, wall-jump, grapple, speed-boost and use items mario kart style. Aside from that, all you have to do is beat your friends off the screen in a bunch of arena-style levels. First to 3 wins the round, and there's only 3 seconds gap in between each win, so it's pretty nonstop.

For such a simple game, it is incredibly addictive.

I'm specifically interested in whether the Shaman synergises with the Druid, even though it's an Oracle/Witch hybrid - considering it now has the druid spell list. I think all the other classes are covered as far as their spell list goes, but not the Shaman.

How to play::

Sign up here with a level 3,4,5,6 or 7 PFS character.
You can use a level 4 or 7 pregenerated character if you don't have a character in these levels (which level depends on what other players bring to the game).

Grab Combat Assistant (CA) (v2.2 build 135).
Just unzip it somewhere, you don't need to do anything else with it until we start the game. Experiment if you want.

Join the chat room about 15-60 minutes before we get started to make sure we're set to go. Join right now if you want, we're there very regularly, so say hello.

Description::

Agents of the Pathfinder Society have discovered the location of a back door into their private demiplane that puts the entire realm at risk of plunder and exploitation at the hands of the Aspis Consortium. Rather than close the access point into their adventuring paradise, however, the Decemvirate sends a crack team of Pathfinders to secure the gate for future Society use... at any cost.

Shadow Lodge 3/5

What's the cost of retraining a class level from a hybrid's alternate class into a hybrid class?

For example, a barbarian level into a bloodrager level?

Does it count as a retraining synergy, ie. 5 prestige per level instead of 7 (and the gold cost that goes with it)?

Description:
Almost all Pathfinders undergo extensive training for three or more years to learn the tricks of the trade, and their last test before graduating from the ranks of the initiates to the status of a full Pathfinder agent is the Confirmation, a special research project that involves considerable fieldwork and is designed to simulate the initiates' future work as a Pathfinder. Even the noteworthy field commissioned agents sometimes participate in such trials as a way to familiarize themselves with the Pathfinder Society’s rules and expectations. Although Confirmation is typically an individual affair, the society recently discovered a site on the Isle of Kortos that would be perfect for initiates but perhaps too dangerous to handle alone. Successfully uncovering this site’s secrets will not only contribute to the society’s body of knowledge but shape the exciting careers ahead for each of the prospective agents.

Description:

A Pathfinder Society Scenario designed for levels 5–9.

For the past year, the Pathfinder Society has used the isolated demiplane contained in the Hao Jin Tapestry as a private adventuring realm and, since discovering a backdoor out of the demiplane, as a shortcut from the tapestry's location to a hidden corner of Varisia. But the tapestry wasn't designed for this purpose, and travel from Absalom to Varisia could be more efficient. Now a team of Pathfinders must discover how the infamous sorcerer known as the Ruby Phoenix created her private demiplane and enter the heart of the tapestry and alter the very nature of the magical realm.

Does it seem strange that the rules don't allow (as far as I'm aware) for a single move or standard action to be replaced with a single swift action?

Especially so since you can swap a standard action for a second move action!

Swift actions were a bit of an afterthought sometime during D&D 3/3.5 from what I recall, so might this have been an oversight?

Just thought about this from looking at the discussion that the black raven is having over in the thread about weapon cords and the benefit to casters now that it uses a move action instead of a swift action, freeing up their swift action.

Sounds absurd.

Is it okay (or legal) to stop what you're doing mid-way through a full round attack?

I don't think there's going to much disagreement that once the dice are rolled for that attack and the result is revealed, you can't say oh actually I don't continue with that. This is especially noticeable for when a gunslinger misfires on an attack.

But what about stopping before you roll the next attack roll? This is a strong argument for not rolling all your attack at once.

This started from this thread on whether weapon cords are kosher in PFS.
