Alperion stoops to pick up the short bow noticing its fine craftsmanship, he tests the draw and quietly nods, "This bow is extremely well made, I can use it but would be happy to let someone else use it if they have need of a short bow as well. Regardless, we will give it to the proper owner upon our return to Falcon's Hollow." "The light is fading and I wonder if it would be best to leave this area or not. It has the advantage of being clear so you can see someone approaching but we know that dangerous creatures make their homes here. What says the group, move on or stay here for the night?"

Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 Alperion manages to slowly work his way down the tree, albeit with several points where his slick hands force him to stop momentarily. As he nears the end of his torturous climb his exhausted arms finally give out and he falls the remaining distance... Well, with that many rolls it had to happen eventually. I'm going to go ahead and roll my Climb checks to get down at this point even though I technically should wait for everyone to finish their checks just to keep things moving along. I'm only rolling using my standard +5 bonus because the Guidance spell would have ended by now for Alperion. Pausing momentarily after looking down and taking in the nausea inducing height at which he is currently situated, Alperion slowly begins the descent down the tree... I sure hope those hunters' families are grateful for the insane risk I just took to return their loved ones. Climb check rolls:
Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11 Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19 Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 I think some of those rolls meant I didn't make any progress for that turn but I'm not sure how many more rolls to make so I'll wait for DM Giants to give me the necessary feedback.

Okay, if I have interpreted things correctly, I need to make one more successful Climb check to finish this insanity, correct? Except, I just realized that I am going to have to climb down as well. Yikes. Alperion loses his grasp on the tree, slides down a few feet and then recovers. Pausing a moment to reflect on the incredible foolishness in which he is currently engaged, he slowly resumes his climb... Climb skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22

Man, I just saw that in order to get the other two I have to make 2 more checks and I am 60 feet up right now, correct? If I miss one of these checks...I'm toast. Might as well lower the one I have reached down now in case I plummet to my death on the next Climb check. ;p Alperion attaches a coil of rope to the poor, decaying hunter's body he has reached and slowly lowers the corpse down as far as it will go and shouts down, "I have lowered the remains as far as I can. Someone will likely need to climb up to the body and let it loose to fall the remaining distance. I will then drag the rope back up and attempt to do the same with the other two bodies." Alperion will wait for someone to retrieve the body he has lowered down and will then try to reach the other two... I'll just roll both attempts right now even though I'll need to do what I have just done for each: lower him down, retrieve rope, climb to the next and then repeat Climb Skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21 Climb Skill check: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 Well...I missed the last one. According to what I just read on the Climb skill, I don't think I should fall as I missed the check by only 3 if the DC is still 12. I'm not sure why I fell on my very first attempt, though, because I only missed that check by 1. So, I may be misinterpreting the rule.

It's blatant meta-gaming but now that we know we need to make 6(!) successful climb checks in a row, I think we should just take the moss and get moving. The odds of any of us making that many checks consecutively are extremely unlikely. I have a +5 Climb skill and I would bet mine might be the best in the group. If I did the math correctly, I would have about a 10% chance of making 6 checks in a row. Not good. Alperion looks grimly at the tree and replies to Serila, "Mistress, I will make the attempt one more time but I think this task may be beyond the ability of any in this company. Okay, this is going to be another case of changing my character's action or words based on new information so it's going to be a little bit odd. Basically, ignore what Alperion said in the most recent post... Alperion looks up into the tree and muses aloud, "These may be the remains of three hunters who have gone missing from Falcon's Hollow. I imagine their families would be glad to know definitively if these poor souls are in fact their missing loved ones. I will climb up to investigate further. Alperion looks up thoughtfully into the tree, "Hopefully the experience of its injuries at our group's hands will teach the survivor some respect for any one walking on two legs who approaches in the future. We can also provide notice when we return to Falcon's Hollow about what lives here so they may be forewarned should they need to visit this area." Serila, I'm pretty sure that the +3 attack modifier already accounts for the Weapon Finesse feat the eagle has. It's base attack bonus is listed as +0, it gets +1 for being a "small" creature and +2 for the Weapon Finesse feat. That totals the +3 attack bonus listed. So you wouldn't add +2 again.

Alperion drops his bow (free action) to the ground, draws his short sword (move action) and swipes at the horrifying beast (standard action) who just attacked him. I have marked the square where I dropped my bow with a gold star. This is also assuming that Nebdel's attacks have not already killed the creature. Short sword attack with flanking bonus: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 1 + 2 = 17 Short sword damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6 Since we are flanking him, I might get sneak attack damage. Not really sure. Alperion watches, fascinated, as the "magic figure" conjured by the sorceress moves away from the tree. "Remarkable." he whispers under his breath. Nice work, Serila! Alperion stirs from his reflections on the tales told at night by woodsmen around the fire and states, "There are legends, mind you only legends, that speak of a creature that lurks in the woods...a "man-dragon" which possesses a voracious appetite and a non-discriminating palate. Based on what we have seen here, I tend to think that this particular legend just might be true." Alperion slowly fans out to the Augustine's left flank.

It's an animal, nothing more. We can't eat it. The only thing we might do with it is skin it and sell it's pelt and that doesn't really seem worth the trouble. Aloud he merely mutters, "Are we ready to get moving again? Time is against us and people in the Hollow need us to act quickly. We must not linger." Serila, you're Heavenly Fire ability only heals "good" aligned entities. A fox is an animal and has a "neutral" alignment (as do almost all animals). Thus your ability will have no effect on it.

I'm assuming that my view of the archer is now obscured somewhat based on our relative positions as he appears to be in the woods. Before I move, though, I'd like to get a better idea of the "safe" area I can move around in to avoid the Entanglement spell, that is assuming that my character can see something going on (vines moving, etc.) to give him a visual cue of just where he can go and NOT get wrapped up in the spell.

DM Giants, I have observed the archer but how visible is he? Does he have a significant amount of cover (or concealment) relative to me from where I am currently situated on the map? Obviously not the DM but unless you had your weapon in your hand (not likely as we were not expecting an attack), you would need to use a second move action to draw your weapon and would not be able to attack this round. I think that is the correct interpretation.

Both of the birds are adjacent to Augustine (according to the map in Nebdel's most recent post) so he can attack either of them without moving...so he wouldn't provoke an AoO. If he attacks and kills the more southern one, I won't be able to attack the other one (closer to fox) unless I shoot at it with my bow which I'd prefer not to do as I would take a -4 penalty due to the bird being engaged in melee with an ally.
