How dreadfully boring. -- Alantia Nightfall, Lady Bard
Of course. History has many an example of empires that crumbled due to poorly conceived plans. I was getting the impression that you desired to let cities fall due to inaction while you sat with your thought deliberating how to shorten a name. In concern of said name, we humans only live but so long compared to elven longevity, so why begrudge the happiness we sometimes derive from our boasts? -- Alantia Nightfall, Bard

But it can often result in being targeted as well, leaving two destroyed cities instead of one. Risks must be weighed and considerations of the best future given due respect. I truly wish you luck in your empire of no cities while your land is overrun by your enemies. You must defend your land and lead the charge in retalliation lest your enemies seize upon your weakness and inaction! I sincerely hope your deliberation is good at making swords and plowshares while we wait for you to decide to catch up. -- Alantia Nightfall, Bard
[Editor's Note: For lack of a better place to put it, here's a rough draft background for Alantia. -- Drakhan] I just had to get away from it all. After all, the succession would end up with my elder brother in the end. When you’re the youngest of eight, you don’t have to worry about inheriting lands. Not in my family, at least. That’s why I’m here, asking to join the Empyrean Order. I need to make a name for myself away from the petty squabbles that have bogged down the rest of my family. I’m afraid it may get uglier than I’d like. Surely you want some background information on me before you accept my application, so I’ll start with my curriculum vitae. I am Lady Alantia Nightfall of the Korvosa Nightfalls, a minor noble family. If you’re curious about my look, I’m half Chelaxian, half Varisian. No, no, that’s a story for another time. Anyhow, I grew up wanting for nothing material. I always felt a little at odds with my family since they were such sticklers for rules . . . even if people got hurt. But I was always treated well and made sure to treat our few servants well. Some of my brothers weren’t so kind. I irritated my instructors by never really sticking with one course of study. As a noble, you’re expected to know much and be able to do much, but normally one will settle into a military role, or one will become a wizard, or something of the like. I was particularly resistant to such urging and nudging; I wanted to do it all. I’ve been trained in everything you might ask of an “adventurer.” I’ve trained in the sword, I’ve trained in enchantments, I’ve trained in sleight-of-hand, and I’ve trained in healing. Add to that my hours of tutelage in the realm of history, stories, and song. The first thing that truly threw my family for a spin was when I decided to go to an acting college and spent several months training under an acting troupe. After that, I . . . disappeared for a few months. I’d prefer not to detail all of what I may or may not have done during that time in such a . . . public forum, but let’s say I did some work transcribing legal documents. Perfectly legitimate, I assure you. If I were to claim a trade, I would claim the title bard, for I am a weaver of tales. It is not my only talent, as I have mentioned, but it is my favorite. Perhaps when you have more time -- for I am sure you do have work to attend to -- l can regale you with the story of my journey here from Korvosa. So what brings me to the Empyrean Order, then? A sense of rebellion, I suppose. I mentioned that I hail from Korvosa. If you're familiar with the town you already know it is more concerned with whether you follow the law than if the laws are just. Maybe it's just my Varisian blood, but that just doesn't sit well with me. I alluded to it earlier, but my family is perfectly content with the status quo there. When I heard there was an organization dedicated to helping those in need and protecting the River Kingdoms from tyranny, I had to investigate.

Andius, dear, do try not to reveal all of my secrets. -- Alantia Nightfall, Bard
