Not willing to pry further without a solid layout of security, Al leaves the digital domain to see where everyone stands.

"Our chances of finding a matrix footprint go up significantly if we're inside his office or home - a few less hoops to jump through, anyway. What's surfaced on your end while I was under?"

Al switches over to VR to convey mostly what everyone already knows. Seeing the number from Murphy, he adds it to the list.

Back in AR, he sets off to find the icon associated with the publicly listed commcode for Dr. Solus.

I'd kick myself if I didn't try the obvious. Might just find his home or campus office. A little B&E might be a good first step.

Matrix Perception: 7d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 5, 3, 5, 5, 5) = 30 (4 hits)

I'll work from the local grid then with the -2.

Matrix Perception to find the necessary access or files: 7d6 ⇒ (5, 3, 6, 4, 6, 5, 1) = 30 (4 hits)

Snapping his head forward momentarily, Al shares what he's learned about Dr. Solus and that the local business connections were as they anticipated.

"I'm going to see what kind of hoops I'll have to jump through to access the Doctor's Washington Uni account. If he's like any student, he wouldn't have bothered doing much housekeeping of his message folders."

Hot-Sim, Programs:Stealth, Sneak, Exploit. 3A/S7/D5/F5

Is the University accessible via the Public Grid? Or am I suffering some drawbacks from proximity?

Al plops down where everyone is comfortable setting up.

"This could take a few hours. I don't expect you to hunker down and meditate - just be aware of who's walking in and out of here."

Al jacks into the local grid, Hot-Sim.

Programs: Virtual Machine, Browse, Stealth, Sneak, Toolbox. 3A/S7/D6/F5

First search will be cross referenced with the info packet we received from Mr. Johnson on Dr. Solus' recent employment history and company sites.
Matrix Search: 9d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 2, 6, 2, 6, 5, 6, 2) = 37 (4 hits)

Second will be which power companies operate around the area, and whether they have public matrix connections (not probing them, just checking to see if they exist).
Matrix Search: 9d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 3, 1, 1, 2, 6, 3) = 26 (2 hits)

Third is if there are any bio-hazardous waste removal services that operate in the area.
Matrix Search: 9d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 4, 3, 2, 2, 3, 1, 6) = 27 (2 hits)

Al glances at Hawatari while setting up for a more protracted Matrix search.

"It's a good first step... but if there's any serious investment in this guy's work then he'll be on a self sufficient private grid. But lets say he is paying for more stable services - power companies use to be either insulated from outside connections or had military grade security. I can check... just don't start counting chickens."

"But if I heard correctly, Dr. Solus' research is partly based around more durable plant life. Frequent brownouts and a lack of resources might as well be part of the experiment rather than a variable to be avoided. If he's doing real out-of-the-box research, then we should probably look for uncommon reoccurring services for the area, like medical/hazardous waste disposal. Or deliveries for similar on-site machinery."

"Sounds equitable."

Wonder if we'll be going coach or by freight crate...

My RPG senses tell me shady-ratburger guy has the suicidal huge payday jobs...

As for Mr. Johnson, I could take a guess at who Mr. Johnson typically deals with; either on the subject matter or his speech.

Business (Professional Knowledge): 10d6 ⇒ (1, 1, 4, 5, 2, 6, 5, 5, 4, 5) = 38 (5 hits)

Corp. (Language): 7d6 ⇒ (4, 3, 5, 2, 6, 1, 4) = 25 (2 hits)

"This might be nitpicking - are we wiping the experimental data we collect? Fine line between industrial espionage and sabotage but there are extra steps involved."

"What kind of in-house security keeps Solus under wraps? Any intel on his living conditions? Or a kind of personality profile?"

Al gasps from the recoil and gets hot tea dribbling down his chin and throat...

Sports: 6d6 ⇒ (1, 4, 4, 6, 5, 5) = 25

"What are you talking about?! The season hasn't even started yet!"

...still too distracted to acknowledge the social faux pas.

Etiquette: 1d6 ⇒ 1 Yea glitch.

Deadfaced and mildly annoyed at the lack of quick grab snacks...
"No. I've never seen a job that wasn't time sensitive - either with planning or execution. Every moment we spend enjoying the "ambiance" is 1 less we spend solving your problem."

Al walks in dropping whichever name is necessary for the reservation. He's already eaten but is prepared to set a world record for nursing a single cup of tea while avoiding the mile high social graces required for this event.

Psst:

Hey Al, send me and Murphy a message and we will join your crew.

Been running with the "urban explorers" gag for a while :p don't worry, you were messaged.

Classy and destitute places always carry the chance of getting murdered. That's why Al preferred his cafe's middling ambiguity. Nobody leaves even gassy.

Ahlwin groans - both as his muscles are re-stimulated and as he sends a curt message to Hawatari and the explorers guild. He links whatever information he found to give them an idea of the dark thin ice they'll be running across.

"I'll respect you a whole lot more..."

No he won't.

"...when you stop giving me a contact high from 20 miles away."

"But your constituents love it. So lets just keep being good at our jobs, Mr. Rogers."

I'll do a basic word search for Phoenix House + Sushi + Seattle. HS+2 & Browse program to cut search time in half. Location plus any news articles or police blotters connecting particular gangs or figureheads to the place.

Matrix Search: 9d6 ⇒ (1, 3, 6, 4, 6, 6, 5, 1, 5) = 37 (5 hits)

Al didn't have to discreetly wander towards the stockroom when jobs came up anymore. Getting the kid a scooter was 150% a good play; didn't have to sleep over nearly as much after work...didn't need to worry too much about work and work colliding. Bonus - her mom was equal parts elated and pissed it wasn't enclosed and bulletproof. Best outcome."

Still, Al learned not to prep food and talk with Mr. Rogers at the same time. Not after the left leg...

"Those 'deets' make pay a sliding scale until they're less mysterious. I know some people. They're effective. What's the time & place?"

Anything come from translating those encrypted files we found in Spanish? I'll basically run them through the free translation matrix equivalent unless that doesn't exist. If it seems choppy I'll find some more adequate software.

I should be be able to take care of checks on item ownership. Just let me know what kinds.

Device rating it is running on, the agents's firewall attribute rating, and whether the agent has any marks on it.

"No" was all Al could muster. The conspicuously classy cephalopod was grabbing his attention.

Going to take a bit closer look...

Matrix Perception: 5d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 5, 5, 5) = 24 (4 hits)

A meet & greet with a gang was hardly part of the discrete pay-off scenario Ahlwin had run through his mind on the drive over. He finds whatever corner exists in the room to keep his back to no one and quietly finishes the (barely) lukewarm coffee that's been sloshing around his thigh.

Unfortunately, no amount of knuckle cracking or caffeine could let the odd calm take hold. Al retreats in AR and satisfies his paranoia.

Assuming public grid access (-2), Al is going to keep his attention mostly on icons.

Matrix Perception: 5d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 4, 2, 5) = 16 (1 hit)

Nothing to add. Al wants his money - loot is icing on the cake. If gang-bosses/Johnsons want to take excessive steps to recoop losses... we'll cross that bridge.

"I see no reason to try and ingratiate ourselves with the cutters anymore than having done the job to the letter. Only things we'll ever be is reliable and not-one-of-them. Giving them our hazard pay doesn't change either fact."

"Besides, I got a girl that might be able to handle this merchandise for us. Hasn't been in the area long but she makes friends easier than I do."

I'll continue to loop around (unsure about actual distance) to the sound of the trucks. Depending on what or who I see, I'm looking to blow out the tires on transportation Simon might be going for.

Al's loud groan was his resigned agreement to the plan.

Can't spell decker without b-a-i-t.

He holsters his shocker and pulls his Rugar.

Gonna make noise, do it right.

Turning to Cavan and breaking the silence "Know any Spanish, Diego? Say something colorful, swipe the drek, and MOVE!"

You would think translation software would be basic OS components by now...I'm for sneaking out and looping around. I'll realign my jammer to face the direction we came in. They'll be futzing around trying to communicate what they found. Maybe give us a minute or 2.

Without the linguistics software to sate his curiosity, Al is forced to jack out with the data.

He takes stock of the situation as his senses adjust to the impending meat grinder (which end he's on is debatable).

Al moves up to the elves and stops short of the corner. Angling for line of sight down the tunnel he sets up his directional jammer (rating 6) and wirelessly excludes his co-workers devices.

psionichamster wrote:
PS, what does Al's persona & programs look like? How about his marks?"

His persona looks like a plain cartoonish office bureaucrat. Almost stick figure-like with a reversed color palette (white tie, black shirt, etc). His marks are left by a stamp shaped as the public domain mark. Programs look like old-school office equipment: typewriters, fax machines, floppy disks.

Yea, there could be bullets flying now.

Yea, this could be done in a safer place.

Yea, it's not our top priority.

Still...

Crack File: 11d6 ⇒ (5, 6, 3, 5, 1, 5, 2, 1, 5, 6, 2) = 41 (6 hits)

1. What file has the most recent edit date?

2. What is that file's defense rating?

3. Is there a data bomb attached?

Matrix Perception: 7d6 ⇒ (6, 3, 1, 2, 4, 6, 5) = 27 (3 hits)

Seeing the laddies not wasting any time, Al jacks into the terminal and makes sure the setup is interposed between him and Shooty McShootface.

Alright, gimme something juicy, unprotected, and worth tomorrow's headache.

Sneak: 11d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 6, 1, 5, 1, 6, 5, 2, 3, 3) = 37 (4 hits)

Assuming I don't spot anyone besides the body, I'll move in and examine the terminal for a hard-line port.

Al shuts down and resets to wipe the mark.

Over his comm "Go with the spell. If I try anything more the decker will probably get more suspicious than if a camera was nudged out of position."

I'll go for a mark on the senor.

Hack on the Fly: 11d6 ⇒ (4, 4, 6, 1, 4, 1, 2, 3, 1, 2, 2) = 30 (1 hit)

Activating VR in Hot-Sim, Al checks around for the sensor's signal.

Not quite sure the disparity, if any, between proximity in normal space and positioning in the matrix. I'll look specifically for that object - if it means sorting through those other silent icons from earlier as well.

I'll use 1 point of edge to Push the Limit
Matrix Perception: 12d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 6, 1, 2, 1, 2, 6, 2, 3, 5, 1) = 37
reroll: 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8

(4 hits total)

Al rounds out his digital sleuthing by exiting VR and rebooting his deck. Drawing his shocker, Al brings up the rear on the danger train.

If I haven't mentioned it already, I'll slave the other teams devices to my Comm (3 I believe?). Plenty of room left.
