Would the cage count as cover?

I am not counting the cage as cover either direction for melee, for ranged it will be partial cover.

Locked in a Cage - Round 1 - concluded

Courageous Anthem active +1 to attacks/dmg

27 Vako
26 Melaria (rat form)
21 Festus
19 Krrys'tall (readied action
17 Candalreth
13 Neppka
13 Crone
11 Red Varisian (7hp dmg)
11 Green Varisian (5hp dmg)
11 Blue Varisian
11 Black Varisian
11 Yellow Varisian
11 Purple Varisian

As part of his readied action, Neppka is able to grab the arm of the Red Thug and pull him against the bars, holding him fast there.

Grapple and Snagging Strike are different actions, so you can't stack them on the same action. You could Snagging Strike in the same turn as Grapple, but you Readied which uses two actions. Krrys still has a readied action in Round 1 also, but I am going to move to Round 2.

Locked in a Cage - Round 2

Courageous Anthem active +1 to attacks/dmg

27 Vako
26 Melaria (rat form)
21 Festus
19 Krrys'tall (readied action from round 1 stll also)
17 Candalreth
13 Neppka

13 Crone
11 Red Varisian (7hp dmg, grappled)
11 Green Varisian (5hp dmg)
11 Blue Varisian
11 Black Varisian
11 Yellow Varisian
11 Purple Varisian

Vako spins up another dazing spell against the grappled Red Varisian and there is an effect albeit mild.

Melaria returns to full size now, outside the closing circle of Varisians and within reach of the groups weapons. She grabs an armful of weapons and moves back towards the cage. Trying to stay clear of any of the closing in bandits.

Candalreth steps back and casts a spell the sends a blinding area of swirls and colors through the air, catching a pair of Varisians in the effect. Green cries out rubbing his eyes, blinded, while Purple blinks simply dazzled by the bright light.

Neppka's round 2 action is up. Krrys can still finish round 1 trigger and post round 2. Will lose round 1 readied action if not posted soon.

Understood, thanks. I had no idea "Ready" is its own action in PF2.

Using one arm to hold the man's arm against the inside of the cage, Neppka reaches out with his other arm to try and bring the man closer so he can peck at his face with his beak.

Snagging Strike w/ Sharp Beak (a Tengu ability) + Courageous Anthem: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 9 + 1 = 29
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Assuming that hits, Red is off-guard.

If the bandit is still up, Neppka pecks at him again.

Snagging Strike w/ Sharp Beak + Courageous Anthem: 1d20 + 9 - 5 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 9 - 5 + 1 = 18
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

If the man is down, Neppka picks up his club.

The readied action was just an flurry to anyone that moved up and attacked us. I will roll it and take my second turn. All fist strikes are nonlethal hits against Red, until he goes down. Any remaining actions are used to move to the West of Candalreth and to ready hits for/ hit anyone trying to hurt him.

First Turn Readied Action
Fist: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 91d6 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

Fist: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 191d6 - 1 ⇒ (5) - 1 = 4

Second Turn: Possible hits or other actions.

Ooh since Ready triggers before the attack does that mean Neppka basically judoed the attack and didn't get hit?

Neppka's damage is +1 too because of Courageous Anthem while Krrystal gets +1 to both attack and damage!

Vako notices the crone getting closer and rotates to focus on her and unleashes one of his non cantrips. The Befuddle spell targeting her while he still keeps his Courageous Anthem up.

11 Blue Varisian

11 Yellow Varisian

Festus touches the feathery shoulder of Neppka and passes on a divine healing spell that restores some damage taken by the tengu fighter. Then the dwarven cleric turns his attention to the Varisians, casting another spell that sends force at Purple. The vitality sucking spell drops the Purple Varisian dead.

The readied action from Krrys'tall is a flurry of non-lethal blows, one misses but the other hits Red Varisian.

Neppka still holds Red Varisian firmly in place than attacks mercilessly with his beak. The first attack kills Red outright. Neppka then bends down and grabs the dead man's weapon, a club.

Because the Red died on your first action, getting the club is second action, so Neppka still has one action left. Krrys'tall still has all his Round 2 actions remaining. Finish those out before the bad guys go.

Festus Heal Neppka: 1d8 ⇒ 5

You can still make melee attacks while grappled. So Neppka still gets the hit, but healing from the cleric makes it less bad. Vako, you aren't up again until Round 3, so your Befuddle spell will wait till then.

I don't know if looking at the Varisian's belt requires a specific action, like Seek, or not, but...

Neppka takes a quick look at the dead man's belt or other obvious place where a key might hang. If he doesn't find anything, he pushes the body away from the cage door.

If he does find obvious keys, he grabs them before giving the body a shove.

Second Action: Flurry of Blows to Green.

11 Green Varisian (5hp dmg; stunned 1,blinded 1, dazzled 10 rounds)
11 Blue Varisian
11 Orange Varisian
11 Yellow Varisian

Neppka bends down and grabs the keys that he assumes are for the cage off the dead guard. But will have to wait until next round to unlock it.

Krrys makes an unarmed flurry against the blinded Green bandit, but the bars make it hard to hit him and only one strike lands, and that is a glancing blow.

The old crone begins casting a spell and most of those in cage begin to feel quite drowsy, some may even fall asleep where they stand. After that spell, she spins a hex on Melaria, which also makes her start to feel quite drowsy, like sleep is her only option. But the druid fights through the hex with no visible effect.

Green Varisian is blind and stunned and cannot act.

Blue Varisian runs up to the cage and tries to pummel Candalreth with his billy club. The thug successfully batters the bard, hitting hard twice. Candalreth look a bit unsteady on his feet after those blows land.

Orange Varisian attempts to grapple Melaria who is bringing your weapons back towards the cage. The druid is spry and crafty and is able to leap out of the way just as the bandit overbalances and falls to the ground face first instead.

Yellow runs up to the cage and tries to stab at Krrys'tall with its dagger. One strike is turned away by the tripkee monk at the last moment, but he cannot block the second, and the knife penetrates his moist flesh, blood running freely down his arm.

Vako and Neppka need DC19 Fort saves vs the spell effect. Krrys takes 6hp dmg (10/16hp remain) and Candalreth takes more. Orange falls prone. On to Round 3

Melaria DC19 Will: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 29

Let's see if Vako and Neppka make their DC19 Fort saves. If they do, I already have Vako's action (unless he wants to pivot it), just need Neppka's and the NPCs.

Secret Checks:

Grimbeard Init: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 20

Neppka begins to fall under the sway of the magical sleep, but as he falls forward, he bonks his head on one of the cage bars before he falls. He shakes his head to wake up, and then tries the keys on the lock of the cage door.

Pausing here, because I don't know how many actions this will take or if it's even successful.

Krrys'tall actually moved back away from the bars. They're not a hardy frog, and they know it. Mobility is their game.

After clearing the cobwebs from the sleepy spell, Neppka slips the keys in the lock and is able to unlock the cage.

Since you already had the keys in your hand, this is an Interact action that uses just one of your three action steps in a round. So continue with two actions remaining.

Neppka shouts in triumph as the cage door opens. Taking in the scene, he sees Melaria standing over a prone Varisian, the crone standing in the open possibly about to cast another spell, and another Varisian trying to batter Candalreth through the cage. Tactically, it might be better to target the enemy spellcaster, but Candalreth doesn't look like he could take another blow. He moves to help out the bard.

2nd action to move from the cage entrance to blue, 3rd action to strike.

Snagging strike + Courageous Anthem: 1d20 + 9 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 1 = 21

Vako spins out a spell at the casting crone that seems to be the leader of the Varisians. He smile a bit when he sees the spell take full effect, leaving the old witch clumsy and befuddled.

Leaving Orange prone on the ground, Melaria comes to Neppka and hands over his weapons, arming the fighter with his sword, dagger, and morning star. Then she moves to the gate of the cage, ready to hand out any more as people come out of confinement.

Festus leaves the cage, gladly takes his warhammer from Melaria, and then casts Shield upon himself, in case there are any attacks on his person.

Candalreth also flees the cage, grabbing his rapier from the druid, and then standing over the fallen Orange, in case he tries to get up.

Neppka rushes to Blue thug and gives him a smack upside his head, ringing his bell but not quite dropping him yet.

Krrys'tall flees the cage, and heads for the befuddled witch. He slugs her across the face, hoping to distract her from casting more spells. Despite a hard hit, the damage is minimal.

The crone, still foggy and off-balance, flees from being in melee with Kryss. She calls out, "Help us! They are getting away! Come to our aid!" and then casts a spell, overcoming her befuddlement, that makes her form and outline blurry and hard to see clearly.

Yellow moves around the cage and lines up with Blue, and both make attacks against the recently freed Neppka. The bandits really hurt Neppka, landing three separate hits, 2 of them very serious. With a squawk, the tengu falls at the feet of two foes...

Green is dazzled, but still manages to work around the obstacles and throw a dagger at Krrys'tall, but the flashing lights rom before still cloud his vision, and the attack is a miserable failure. '

With a rapier at his throat, Orange thug just lays there, ready to surrender to Candalreth.

End of Round 3

Whew! Lost of action. Neppka takes 20 hp dmg total and is now unconscious and prone and will need death saves soon enough. He also moves just ahead of Yellow in the initiative. We will see who the Crone is calling to perhaps...

Still in the cage, Vako steps to the side and casts an area of effect spell that sends a cone of painful musical energy out in burst at Blue and Yellow. Yellow takes damage for the first time, but the sonic energy is too much for Blue and he collapses face-down in the dirt.

Festus rushes the side of the fallen Neppka, grabs his healing kit from his pack, and bends to give him as much immediate first aid as he can muster. The triage works, as soon Neppka is alive and sputtering, if not fully ready for a fight.

Melaria steps up behind Krrys'tall and unleashes an arc of electrical energy that zaps both Yellow and Green. Yellow is able to avoid any damage, but Green takes it all and is still dazzled and now quite hurt.

From out of the tent beside the wagons comes something quite unexpected. A Dwarf, perhaps, with glowing white eyes, and an illuminated aura around his form rushes from the tent. Just looking at it causes your heartrate to spike and fear to start to fill you, and you can tell you do not want to be close to this thing at all. "Głupcy! Coście zrobili? it shouts loudly, the sound echoing strangely in your ears. The glowing dwarf menaces a large dwarven war-axe but instead of charging to attack, he slips next to the old crone, and stands his ground there.

Krrys'tall grabs his bow and fires twice at the Varisian tough standing over Neppka. Unfortunately both shots fly wide of the mark with no effect.

Standing over the surrendering Varisian, Candalreth casts a healing spell Neppka that grants him slow healing over time. Then he bends and disarms the Orange Varisian, tossing his club and knife back towards the cage.

The crone whispers something to the new dwarf and he nods in agreement. She does not make an other actions, but seems a little less befuddled than before.

Green, still having a hard time seeing, moves up and attacks the tripkee with its mace. None of those attacks hit however.

Orange does not act, merely surrenders to Candalreth.

Candalreth casts Hymn of Healing on Neppka which gives him fast healing 2, allowing him to regain 2hp at the start of his turn as long as the spell is sustained, 4 rds max. Neppka still prone, is now up.

If it wasn't clear, Vako is up followed by a pair of the NPCs

Vako keeps up his whistling but steps towards the edge of the cage and calls out.

Ok, we fought and we won. Can we talk now? About rocks and how we can stop you caging people up??

Vako calls out to the dwarf and the old woman trying to get them to parley, but it seems they are completely ignoring his requests.

Melaria sends a handful of rocks flying at Green, but the fly harmlessly away from the lone combatant.

Festus advances on the Green and looks to bash his warhammer on Green, but he also misses. He spins up his shielding spell as a defensive measure thereafter.

From across the camp, the dwarven newcomer chants a few words of magic, wraps his arm around the old woman, and they both disappear in a cloud of dark energy. They have fled the battle.

Krrys is up before the Green Varisian goes. He is really the lone combatant left standing.

Even though it's hard to tell with his plant face, Vako is genuinely hurt that they didn't talk with him.

Krrys'tall holds a gripper out to get Festus to back off, and addresses Green.
"Come on, Mon. Ya gran left you. Just chill, and we'll back off."

Willing to spend my whole turn on this attempt to stop the fighting.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23

The Green Varisian looks at the tripkee, looks around the camp at his fallen brethren, and the fact his leader just bailed with the weird dwarf guy, and shrugs. "Zou vill let me goo?" he asks lowering his weapon, and looking to follow Yellow running away.

Will end combat rounds if you let him run, will stay in rounds, if you don't.

From over by the cage, Neppka waits to see how Krrys'tall's and the Varisian's conversation goes. I'm assuming that he can see at least one other surrendered and incapacitated Varisian, so they have someone who they can ask questions of after things have settled down.

Krrys'tall nods at the man but adds. "Too much killin' today, as is. We need answers, dough."
Krrys'tall motions Candalreth to step off the captured man. "Stay wit ya bredren an talk wit us a bit, and we cool."

Krrs'tall steps back to give the man some space, more than allowing for an opportunity to just run, but leaving no room for any harm to come to Melaria or any other companions.

Neppka doesn't sheathe his sword, but his posture visibly relaxes and he stays well away from the Varisian that Krrys'tall is trying to convince to stay.

The Varisian man looks about the camp, and sees the non-combatants have mostly scattered and aren't in any danger. Instead of fleeing, he drops his club in the grass and takes a knee with a sigh, still rubbing his eyes and blinking away the spots before his eyes. "Ask vhat you vill, then." he says in a low voice.

Was I supposed to lead here? I thought Neppka had stuff he wanted to ask. I don't mind taking the lead.

Oh, I see. I mentioned that we should question them in the Discussion thread as a player, but Neppka hasn't said anything. He's been too busy gaining and then losing the dying condition.

Vako had first brought up talking to them, and Krry'stall followed up with a similar request. I think the Varisians would probably me more open to talking if the questions were from one of those two.

Kudos for the communication to get us back on track!

Lead away!

Krrys'tall breathes a sigh of relief and rests up against the nearby pine tree. After a moment to allow everyone to stand down and take a breath, they ask both of the remaining Varisians, "Start from de beginning: Why have your people taken to attacking travelers?"

The first Varisian speaks Common better than the second. "Olga is our leader, you saw her. She commanded us to help him find the stone. I don't know what he wanted it for, but she did as she was asked, and so did we."

Vako wanders out and casts Soothe on Nepka Soothe heal: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

then flops onto the ground. Are you the only ones attacking people around here? We just want the roads to be safe. Also I'm tired.

While his two companions talk to the Varisians, Neppka wanders over the tent the dwarf came out of and looks inside.

The Varisian stares at Vako for a bit then says, "I cannot say who is attacking people around here. We have not been attacked. So maybe it is just us, Who knows."

The leshy bard is able to heal Neppka before he gets too far away, and get him back to full health.

Neppka goes to inspect the tent that the dwarf came out of. There is a comfortable looking set up there including a table, chair, and sleeping area. On the table are some papers, but again the writing is not understood by Neppka.

Krrys'tall rubs their head and asks, "What could dat dwarf have offered to make ya gran so willing to turn to violence?"
