In Anthusis, the capital of the recently liberated nation of Vidrian, the PCs join the Silverscales Tournament, a fishing competition that the city hosts to ease tensions between its Mwangi population and the former colonists. Throughout the tournament, the PCs pit their skills against rival twins and their crews while dealing with various unexpected complications. When one twin’s magical bait malfunctions, the PCs must face dangerous giant crabs if they hope to survive and claim the prize!

GM Warah |

Having recently arrived in Anthusis, you find yourselves in The Broad Captain Inn. It is a favorite gathering place for aspiring adventurers, mercenaries, and sailors due to its low prices (snacks and drinks for 2 copper each!), decent fare, and a meticulously maintained bulletin board displaying job opportunities and upcoming events.
Please introduce your characters.

![]() |

A small orangish red Kobold makes his way carefully across the inn's main room trying not to attract too much attention to himself. He notices the bulletin board and goes to read it. "Mmm. What got here?"

![]() |

Gwendellyn spends more time than she really thinks should be necessary to get the bartender to admit that since she'd hardly be consuming the same amount of food as one of her larger colleagues, she should get a discount on her meal. She settles at last for the addition of a bowl of scrap meats for her "darlingest pupper Benji" and hands over two ungainly copper coins before taking her food and returning to the group, an unsightly sulk on her face.
(Benji, on the other hand, looks delighted at the feast of leftover fish parts and licks the bartender's face when she bends over to deliver the bowl.)

GM Warah |

Shortly after your arrival, two people walk up to the bulletin board to read a prominently displayed scroll. The tall Mwangi woman with dark hair and a red headband lets out a booming laugh. “Think you can do better this time, Demed?”
“Better than you and your crew? Certainly!” retorts a slender Mwangi man, who pulls out a notebook as he walks to his seat. The woman snorts derisively before joining him at a table, retorting: “If you can avoid falling into the water, that would already be an improvement.”
“I think you forget that my crew is the only one that managed two victories in a row, sis,” the man boasts. “This year we’ll do even better, and you’ll eat your words before the day is over.” The siblings smile widely at each other, a fierce love for competition burning brightly in their eyes.
See Slide 4 for today’s contents of the bulletin board.
What do you do?

![]() |

A tall woman with bright red hair joins the small crowd in front of the bulletin board. She quickly scans the board and the scroll announcing a fishing tounament looks quite interesting. "I never got a chance to compete in a fishing tournament. Is somebody looking for a buddy? How many people are in a crew, btw?"

![]() |

Felinzi reads through the messageboard announcement. "Lots of big words. Hard to remember if no taking paper."
"Fishing is fun, yes?" Felinzi looks into the distance envisioning a day of relaxing on shore with a fishing pole and doing practically nothing and still enjoying the meal of fresh caught fish that somehow manage to end up on his catch line as though conjured there.

GM Warah |

The party investigates the job board and expresses interest in doing some fishing. Meanwhile, the two Mwangi people continue to banter about who's going to win the tournament.

Iput eyes the crowd looking for a fellow Iruxi. If any can be found, she will approach them and ask in Iruxi about the fishing competition. She will leave the Mwagi citizen to others.

GM Warah |

There is an elderly male Iruxi sitting at the bar. He seems to be trying to start up a conversation with the human male patron beside him, but it looks like he's being steadfastly ignored. When he sees Iput glancing around, he shifts his attention immediately. In a creaky voice he invites her to join him. "Why, hello there! Pull up a stool and get comfy here. My name's Rinshish. And who might you be?"

![]() |

Felinzi walks over to the two people and asks ... Demed, the lady called him? ... Yes, Demed.

Well met honored father. As a traveler from the far distant Valashmai Jungle I am new to Garund. Are you a native of Garund? What do you know of this Silverscales tournament?

GM Warah |

Demed shrugs at Felinzi. "Anyone can sign up for the tournament, but you won't win if you don't have a team. The numbers won't add up." He turns back to the woman with a smirk. "I'll enjoy seeing your face when my team is announced the winner."
Rinshish replies to Iput: "Oh, why yes! I am a local, born and raised. Things sure are different around here. Why, back in my day..." He rambles on for a bit about the days of yore when he was a strapping young guy before eventually remembering Iput's second question. "Oh! But silly me! You asked about the Silverscales tournament. Ooooeeee! That's a fun one. See, it's not just the number of fish you catch, or the size that matter. Well, they do, but not as much as you'd think. I recall one year, the prize went to a team that trained seals to do tricks between catching fish. They all dressed up in ridiculous outfits and capered around like they had fire ants in their pants the whole time. Not the seals--the people. Boy! That was entertaining. And another year..." He continues to prattle on about past winners of the fishing tournament, each story more outlandish than the last.

![]() |

Having a small amount of pride in her acrobatics ability, Iput listens intently as her mind races with more and more ideas of what could be done to win the contest.
This sounds like a lot more fun that I suspected. much more to it than a simply wading in and catching some fish. Where do I go to sign up?"

![]() |

Gwendellyn, on the other hand, chats with the lady. "Is that your brother? I can tell - little brothers are such a bother sometimes, aren’t they. I tell you what…"
Diplomacy vs DC 15: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
Somehow she manages to not come across as extremely condescending. Yet.

Esmeralda listens carefully to the stories Rinshish tells Iput and she remembers that she heard something about the tournament before. "I heard some things about the Silverscales Tournament before. Contestants try to impress the judges by embodying the core values of the Vidric Revolution: dedication, bravery, ingenuity, and collaboration and the waters around Anthusis teem with all kinds of sea life. Usually the competitors make use of them in their performance."

"Oh, you have no idea!" The woman's laughter booms merrily in response to Gwendelly's comment. "He keeps trying to best me at everything we do, but his track record doesn't live up to his hype. By the way, I'm Deka. And you are?"
"Now, hold on, sis!" Demed protests. "You lose to me half the time!"
"Ha! You're rounding up, now, are you?" Deka counters.
"Only by three tenths of a percent. That's hardly a solid lead, and this tournament is going to flip the rankings!" Demed proclaims.
Deka is now Friendly toward Gwendellyn. Demed is still indifferent to Felinzi. NPC Attitudes toward the PCs are tracked on Slide 3.
Copied from the above spoiler for your convenience:
Meanwhile, Rinshish gives Iput directions to the place where the Tournament signups are. Or rather, he tells three anecdotes and two halves of poorly constructed stories (the beginning of one and the middle of another), and drops pieces of the directions randomly throughout his verbal meandering.
Each of you can interact with both Demed and Deka as much or as little as you like. When each of you is ready to move on, please let me know.

GM Warah |

After a short while, Deka and Demed move to join a crowd of people heading toward the Lower Harbor for the tournament. They wave for you to follow, and the innkeeper ushers you out as well, seeming just as impatient to join the throng. The journey from the inn to the Lower Harbor takes two hours due to the crowds converging along the rocky cliffside path leading down to the harbor.
The docks creak under the weight of the crowd. Mwangi and Chelaxian citizens stand shoulder to shoulder in the midday sun, waiting for the excitement to begin. The contestants stand in line with their teammates, waiting for the signal to claim their fishing spots. Some aspiring anglers seem to have already chosen their spot, while others are carefully scanning the waters for a glimpse of the glimmering scales that give the tournament its name. There is only one entry slot left.
What is your team name? Either roleplay that conversation here or take it to the Discussion tab for an “ooc” selection.

GM Warah |

Tall and imposing, Deka stands out from the crowd as she inspects her reinforced grappling hook. To her right, Demed hurriedly jots down notes before telling his crew to be ready to cast. A silver-haired Zenj woman wearing a judge’s colorful sash raises her hands to silence the crowd. With a warm smile, she utters a single sentence that unleashes a flurry of activity. “Find your station!”
How will you choose your station? This will affect the DCs during each fishing round. You can:
A: Rush to a spot before other contestants can claim it (Athletics or Acrobatics)
B: Ask Deka or Demed for help (using Diplomacy to make a Request, but only if either of them is at least friendly to you)
C: Rely on your knowledge of fishing (using Nature, Survival, or Fishing Lore).

![]() |

"Oh, we’re Benji’s Babies of course." Gwendellyn doesn’t hesitate to state suggest a name for the team as she scratches her familiar behind the ears.
When the start of the tournament is announced, she urges Benji forward to rush in front of everyone else.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Unfortunately the puppy is a little too eager to stretch his short little legs and she falls off her saddle with a yelp - followed by a shriek as all the larger contestants start to trample over her!

"I would propose 'Swims in Turbulent Waters' as a teams name. everyone knows that swimming with the fishes is the best way to catch a lot of fish." Iput will attempt to use her skill in Nature to find a good station.
Nature: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19

![]() |

"Either name good," Felinzi says with a shrug, just happy to be participating.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
He stops for a moment and helps Gwendellyn get back on her feet.

![]() |

"What about Benji's Babies Swimming in Turbulent Waters?" Esmeralda answers as she does not want to pick a side. She's not creative enough to come up with a team name.
Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Esmeralda also tries to find a good spot with Survival.

GM Warah |

Gwendellyn tumbles into an undignified heap as Benji dashes off without her. It takes a moment for him to realize he's missing something, but eventually he trots back to her side.
Felinzi dodges and weaves among the other contestants, but can't quite get ahead of the crowd. However, Iput has her eye on a pretty good spot, but she'll need some help to claim it.
That's two failures and one success. We're waiting on Esmeralda to determine if the team is successful...and what your team name will be.

GM Warah |

The team name is a mouthful, but the crowd "Awwws" and chuckles when it is announced.
Esmeralda does her level best to scope out a good fishing spot, but the refraction of the sun on the surface of the water throws her off.
The team failed to find an ideal fishing spot, but Iput's success found you an average one. Because one of you succeeded, the DCs for the fishing tournament are unaffected.
Shortly after everyone converges on their spots, the voice of one of the judges rings out over the hubub: "Contestants! Cast your lines!" And with that, dozens of fishing lines soar through the air and plunk into the water.
The party is up! For a reminder of what checks are typical, check out this post. Particularly creative solutions can earn a +1 circumstance bonus, so feel free to use other skills/tactics as long as you can justify them narratively. And because someone's bound to ask: if you choose to attack a fish with your weapon or spells, you may roll for an attack instead of a skill check.

![]() |

Iput will utilize her Acrobatics skill to dive from the dock into the water in a showy manner and then swim with the fishes while using her Stealth skill to try and catch a fish with her hands.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (16) + 7 = 23 Diving from the dock.
Stealth: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15 Catching a fish with her hands.

Gwendellyn’s pride might still be smarting from her fall, but she can be the bigger person and let it go.
For now.
"Benji darling, hold this." Her familiar takes one end of the woven spider-silk bundle in his mouth and waits for her to tie the other end to the wooden planks before taking off in a sprint around the corner of the dock. As he does, the strands of the net fan out. Gwendellyn refuses to believe that she is even slightly worried about her handiwork breaking, but she does glance to the side for a moment. To check on her fellow Pathfinders, of course.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Felinzi tries calling out to the fish. "Here fishy fishy fishy!"
'Maybe I'm not loud enough,' he thinks to himself.

![]() |

Esmeralda takes a sack out of her backpack, ties it to the end of her fishing line and lets it down into the water. Once she thinks the sack is deep enough she casts light and a small orb of light appears in the sack. Esme hopes that the light will attrackt some fish which swim into the sack and when some fish are inside, she will quickly pull the sack out of the water.
Crafting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

GM Warah |

Gwendellyn unspools a beautifully woven fishing net and ensnares a brilliantly colored trout (success). Felinzi does a marvelous impression of a character from a children's play; he, too, just isn't loud enough (failure). Esmeralda has a nice idea, but the opening to her bag keeps flopping shut underwater, so no fish can get in (failure).
Meanwhile, Deka's team is showing off their mad angling skills, bringing in two fish. Demed's team must've found some amazing bait; they've brought in three fish in the first fifteen minutes.
Cumulative Tournament Points:
Benji's Babies Swimming in Turbulent Waters: 2 points
Deka's Anglers: 2 points
Demed's Bait and Switch: 3 points
Suddenly-- “Deka, your lines!” shouts Demed. Four lines snap in quick succession, causing those nearby to yell in surprise and frustration. While the crew hurries to pull the remaining line, Deka points at a dark shadow in the water and shouts: ”Young tiger shark! Looks like Linesnapper!”
Round 1: Everyone may choose to make one participation check to earn extra Tournament Points, or post to let me know you're refraining.
Esmeralda
Felinzi
Gwendellyn
Iput
In addition, one PC can make an Athletics check to try to catch the infamous Linesnapper.

![]() |

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Felinzi, noticing the excitement, quickly casts Bullhorn and starts announcing a play-by-play loud enough for everyone to hear.
"Linesnapper shark spotted. Or maybe striped. Not sure. Iput is going to get it."

GM Warah |

Diving bravely into the water to tussle with a tiger shark, one of the few species known to actively hunt people, Iput quickly jams her fingers deep into its gills and hauls it out of the water. Felinzi belts out the play-by-play like an old pro, effortlessly blending factual and amusing observation. The judges grin with excitement, and the crowd goes wild!
Success for Iput (1 point) and critical success for Felinzi (2 points).
Esmeralda and Gwendellyn are up!

![]() |

Ok, not the best idea as it seems. Esmeralda thinks while she pulls back the empty sack. She removes the sack from the line, puts a piece of bread from her backpack onto the hook and throws the line back into the water.
Survival: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

![]() |

"Benji, that beast’s bigger than you, don’t try to- DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT-" Gwendellyn has her hands full trying to keep her familiar from jumping into the water after the shark, and then from trying to grab its tail fin after Iput hauls it out of the water.
No checks at this time - looks like folks have Linesnapper in the bag!

GM Warah |

@Esmeralda: Was your last post a roll for Linesnapper or for Round 2 of fishing?
Cumulative Tournament Points:
Benji's Babies Swimming in Turbulent Waters: 5 points
Deka's Anglers: 2 points
Demed's Bait and Switch: 3 points
Now that Linesnapper is out of the way, the Tournament continues. Deka curses her luck, inspecting the damage to her team's lines. “Almost all of our lines snapped, and we’re out of spares,” she growls. With an angry sigh, she grabs her grappling hook and nods to the robust Chelaxian man holding the team’s only remaining line.
“Never give up, right?” asks the man with a grin.
“Never give up,” agrees Deka, hoisting her grappling hook.
Round 2: Everyone make one participation check
Esmeralda
Felinzi
Gwendellyn
Iput
In addition, each of you can choose whether or not to help Deka in this situation. Options include: Crafting to repair their lines, Diplomacy to convince other participants and bystanders to pitch in, or anything else you can justify. This is the "complication" for this round, so this check should be made AFTER your fishing check.

Iput will once again attempt to catch a fish with her hands.

Please take the Survival check for Round 2 of fishing! I'm sorry for the confusion!
"Good job, Iput! You really know how to do fishing!"
Esmeralda patiently waits for a fish to grab the bread on the hook when she finally notices the complication in the other team. After Iput gathered some lines from the water, Esmeralda will try to help and attempt to repair one line.
Crafting: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

Casually reaching into the water, Iput hooks her fingers into the gills of a gloriously speckled fish as if it was child's play, (Crit success) while Esmeralda manages to catch a curious fish in a sack. Her ingenuity makes the judges chuckle. (Success) Next, the two of them team up to help Deka retrieve and repair her team's broken lines. (Crit success for Iput and Success for Esmeralda)
"Wow, thanks! We really appreciate it!" Deka graciously accepts the Pathfinders' assistance. She steals a glance at her brother, and steely determination takes over her face as she renews her efforts to defeat him. "Come on, team! This tournament isn't over yet!"
Cumulative Tournament Points (partway through Round 2):
Benji's Babies Swimming in Turbulent Waters: 11 points
Deka's Anglers: 2 points
Demed's Bait and Switch: 3 points
Felinzi and Gwendellyn are up!

Gwendellyn puts the finishing touches on her own rod - they never have things in her size, but she’s above such petty inconveniences - and flicks the line into the water. Carefully she watches the acorn bob rise and fall with the waves. Her arms tense, relax, tense - waiting for something to bite.
Fishing Lore to Fish: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
After several false bites and having to send Benji to fetch her rod after some stupid blessed fish pulled it out of her hands, Gwendellyn is ready to put her attentions elsewhere. Thankfully, her newest ward Deka is in need of some love and support. "Darling, spare a line for a friend in need?" she asks a stranger swathed in yellow as if she were collecting alms for the poor before moving on to the next fisher on the dock.
Diplomacy vs Complication: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14

Gwendellyn is having a rough day. (Two failures, but no crit failure.) Fortunately, she and Benji are so adorable that no one faults her for it.

Felinzi Deception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Failure
It's almost convincing. Some folks chuckle, but no one gets distracted enough to stop their fishing. While he's got their attention, he makes a plea for Deka's aid. "On a more serious note, Deka's team could use some fishing line. Anybody have some spares?"
Felinzi Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
Success
Cumulative Tournament Points:
Benji's Babies Swimming in Turbulent Waters: 12 points
Deka's Anglers: 4 points
Demed's Bait and Switch: 6 points

GM Warah |

“Ten more!” shouts Demed.
“It’s not over until the fish are counted,” grumbles Deka as she hoists another catch into her half-full basket.
“Might as well be! You have no hope to catch up,” replies Demed as fish start jumping from the water directly into his overflowing basket.

"Demed darling, I don’t want to tell you you’re doing it wrong, but, hmm, is your bait supposed to be, I don’t know, that… erratic?" Gwedellyn’s voice is just shy of condescending as she glances over her shoulder. She would have liked to also look down her nose as she said it, but that is sadly a luxury not allowed to those on the smaller side of things.
It looks like we’re also ready for Round 3 checks, so I’ve made mine below - sorry if this is not the time!
But with the fish so distracted, she turns her attention to capitalizing on the moment. She puts a hand on Benji’s back, waiting for a fish to leap particularly high before sending him to snatch it out of the air.

@Felinzi and Iput: The Identify Magic check is separate from the fishing check. Apologies for being unclear. Do you want to roll for fishing this round?
Felinzi has no idea what's going on, while Iput and Gwendellyn recognize that Demed's bait is magical...and unstable. Gwendellyn takes advantage of that by sending Benji to nab one of the fish leaping towards Demed's basket.
Identify Magic Failure for Felinzi; Success for Iput and Gwendellyn. Fishing Success for Gwendellyn (1 point).
Esmeralda is up for both checks. Felinzi and Iput, please either roll a fishing check or post that you abstain.
