Hampton leaps back into the flock of birds valiantly, but Fasiel clearly put more money into his traps than his locks. The half-elf finds the birds as hard to strike as Olov.
Unusk slashes at the birds with her scimitar. She sheers the animated folded paper creations in a wide swath. Suddenly, the flute music and rain stops and the remainder of the paper birds fall to the ground. Most of them become sopping piles of paper.
"Oh," Safa pouts a moment as the birds they were dancing with fall away but then smiles and says. "Well, challenge overcome. That one still has some of the elemental essence. It will be useful in overcoming Fasiel's barrier." They point at a folded bird that managed to not land in a puddle and that still twitches occasionally with animating magic.
You hear a thump over in the hedges and can see something silver glinting in the returned sunlight.

The divinely blessed tend to the wounds and after a short delay have everyone in fighting shape.
You collect the magical paper bird. The glinting metal in the hedges is a finely crafted silver flute with iconography from the elemental plane of air. Beautiful and valuable but not magical. Of the breath that played the flute or the voice that warned you away, there is no sign.
Healed and prepared, you search the door for another trap but none is apparent. Bracing for resistance, you open the door but find nothing waiting for you.
The foyer is pillared with elegant carpets and statues of noble, but subservient, genies. The entrance’s enormous double doors face a large statue. It depicts Fasiel, his towering figure sneering arrogantly down at onlookers. Large tapestries depicting battles between Qadira and Taldor emphasizing the use of genies now also feature the skelm commanding the battlefield.

Ithuriel recognizes the name as the best known and most hated genie binder in Casmaron's history. Clearly not Fasiel. The skelm must have had the statue altered.
None of the doors have locks or apparent traps.

Precious is grateful for the healing. Razmir sure must be a generous god!
He sticks the twitching bird on his helmet. He's always shivalous to his enemies. Never mind the birds kebobbed on his lance.
Inside, he looks around. He runs over to the rightmost door.
| GM Blake |
This door opens to reveal displays of different tools and methods genie-binders use to force recalcitrant genies to obey their commands. There is writing scrawled in charcoal on the floor near or bases of the displays. However, before you can consider or inspect the room, you hear the sound of movement from your left (east).
Display cases surround the hall to your left, framing a granite obelisk decorated with cartouches and hieroglyphs. The petrified wood of the walls and floors glitters with small quartzes. Several scarred Keleshites lounging in the chamber reach for weapons.
A rumbling voice from an armored shaitan seated behind the obelisk stills them. "Only fools rush to battle against an unknown foe." They carefully move another piece on a carefully laid out game of Kingmaker before standing. "I am Chaliz Farour, captain in the armies of the Sultana Ashadieeyah bint Khalid, and now servant to Fasiel ibn Sazadin. The master of this house commands me to best any who dare intrude, but I would know your names before our contest begins."

"That would fulfill my instruction," Chaliz says with a nod. "It would be far more entertaining than commanding these unruly brigands in battle against you. You will need to give it your all. It would not count for you to simply let me win."
He waves his hand and the pieces on the kingmaker board reposition themselves into the starting squares.
"Who shall be your champion?" he asks. The poor, frozen brigands remain in their positions.

He tries to puts up a fair fight without making it too obvious. If this was a real war I'd be down there in all the carnage, Chaliz. He taps his thimble helmet.
Precious Thimble's Warfare Lore (T): 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 8 = 28
| GM Blake |
It is an amusing image to see the towering shaitan crouched over the human-sized kingmaker board while the toy knight stands on the edge of the board. The two wage an intense game of kingmaker. The pieces move at the direction of Chaliz's finger and Precious' spoon. The more pragmatic spectator might suspect that it was the shaitan who was making the pieces move in response to the poppet's instruction rather than any magic in the board. Precious is careful to make an appropriately worse choice every few moves so that the shaitan is able to slowly overcome his gambit.
"Ha!" the shaitan booms as he leaves the poppet with no more options. "It was a good game. You should not feel bad that you lost to a captain in the army of the Peerless Empire! I have bested you, the invaders, and my task is fulfilled." He snaps his fingers, releasing the mercenaries from his hold. They immediately grab their weapons and move to assault you. Interacting with genies truly is a double-edged sword.
Chaliz floats up and away from the conflict. Safa drifts over to join him, and the two begin chatting.
The three mercenaries apparently feel that they can handle you despite your numbers. After all, it is really just two orcs, a hunger, two men in robes, one of whom looks rather elderly, and a toy. Or they are perhaps already affected by the skelm's hatred and resentment and not particularly worried about the odds.
The brigand in a red vest reaches Precious before anyone else can react. He slashes the poppet with a rough swing of his sword. Precious easily parries the backswing.
The brigand in a blue vest dashes for the weakest looking of your group: the old man in robes. He drives his blade deep into Ithuriel's side (critical hit) and looks far too excited by the violence.

Shaken by the power of the "toy," the brigand needs to nimbly dodge the lance headed for his heart. Even then, the point still catches him in the shoulder, wounding him grievously.
The mercenary in the blue vest moves ponderously around Unusk. It proves a fatal error as she separates his head from his neck with a powerful swing (crit AOO).
The yellow vested brigand stabs Unusk repeatedly and deep, though the invisible force in front of her slows the blade to prevent anything vital from being struck.

"We don't wish to harm you. Stand down." The pale light makes the man's face turn serene, though his mind races with the paranoia of being watched by unseen eyes.
