The harpoon easily pierces Amestra's lightweight armor, the elven-made shirt shredding under the assault. She screams in pain, not once, but twice, surely music to Fihralaz's ears. But she still manages to smirk in his ugly face when his attempt to bite her is thwarted by her own muzzle.
Grimacing at the pain, she bites her lip and forces herself to focus on the demon and study its moves. Aha, she thinks as she comes to a conclusion about the best spot to stab him.

The comment about the swarms in water was me, technically OOC, but likely a conclusion that a woman with an 18 INT could easily come to. Cause Magdh knows I ain't quite that smart IRL.

"YEAH!" Nina whoops as Fihralaz falls. "Now we gotta get these cocoons out of the water!"
The little gnome, taking advantage of her hastened speed, zips along and sharply descends down to where she thought she saw the nearest cocoon hit when it fell - keeping one eye on the grabby tendrils of the corrupted foliage. She plunges her hands into the brackish water and grabs for it, attempting to pull it up onto the dry land behind her.

Nina zips over to the nearest submerged cocoon and drags it up. It weighs about the same as an adult elf might. Water drains from the chrysalis - the things are evidently not watertight.
Meanwhile the leech-nado spins on. I think the distraction save is completely moot - even if the elemental is nauseated by the leeches writhing inside it the slam damage from the whirlwind is automatic and it still gets to move.
Tùrin skewers the injured giant leech, finishing it off. The second one makes a final attempt to latch on to the reindeer as Quiella urges him to move off...

“Can anyone purge invisibility in Nina’s vicinity?”
Gervase darts 35 feet to the S-E into another tree-top, from where she ✨casts hunter’s eye targeting Nina’s ‘mosquito’.

GM supervillan |

It's an odd spell, Hunter's Eye. It is "target: one creature" meaning that if you can't already detect the target then you can't cast it. If you can already detect the target then the spell is useful to let you track and target it if it later uses any form of concealment. I thought about taking the spell for my Hunter, but ultimately decided it's too narrow in application.
Do you want to do something else Gervase?

Gervase bullseyes the giant leech, but the grotesque vermin will take more than one arrow to finish.
Amy runs like hell to escape the leech swarm. Although running is rather difficult in a swamp. She makes it back onto solid (well almost solid) ground next to one of the submerged chrysalises.
Kargen finally recovers from his nauseating experience in the clutches of Fihralaz and sends a second arrow at the giant leech nearby. Turns out this creature will take more than Army and Navy to put down.
Nina gets a chrysalis onto the land and starts cutting it open with her dagger.

There's definitely something inside, but it's going to take more work to cut it free. The cocoon is made of strong, sticky fibres.
The leech-nado sprays dead leeches around. But there are still plenty left.

It looks like Nina's Haste is sufficient to allow our two land-bound party members to evade the second swarm long enough for the elemental to deal with it, so I will end combat now. The important thing to determine is the contents of the cocoons and their status :o

Army and Navy shoot down the last giant leech and converge on the last submerged cocoon.
Nina and Amy struggle to get their cocoons open. Amy finds that the rapier isn't a terribly good cutting weapon and Nina's dagger is just too small to cut a big enough tear. Quiella's greatsword opens a cocoon in one blow, and Thoriel's scimitar only takes two.

E(Q): 4d20 ⇒ (9, 13, 7, 18) = 47 dead
E(N): 1d20 ⇒ 10 alive!
Thoriel finds that her cocoon holds a deer. The animal is unconscious. There are clear signs of mutation.
Quiella's cocoon holds an elf. Unfortunately, she is dead.
You help each other to open the rest of the cocoons. Nina's, as well as one still hanging from a tree, hold elves who are unconscious but still alive. Two more of the chrysalises that you recover from the water hold dead elves. The last holds a dead deer.
When you revive the unconscious elves trivial with Quiella on hand you learn that they are, as expected, Uprooters from Lanverel's squad. But Lanverel is amongst the dead.

![]() |

Don't have time for a full post right now. But would it have made any difference towards keeping another elf alive if Amy had been doing Slashing damage? She has the feat Weapon Versatility: When wielding a weapon with which you have Weapon Focus, you can shift your grip as a swift action so that your weapon deals bludgeoning, piercing, or slashing damage instead of the damage type normally dealt by that weapon. You may switch back to the weapon’s normal damage type or another damage type as a swift action. If your base attack bonus is +5 or higher, using this feat is a free action instead.

GM supervillan |

Nice feat, that. But sadly the first cocoon that Amy opens holds a dead deer. Three elf-cocoons got submerged, two on round 3 and one on round 4. The latter was removed from the water after only one round, and the elf lived. The others are recovered from the water on rounds 7 and 8 and by that time their elf occupants are already dead.

![]() |

Kargen shakes his head. "Damn, filthy demons. And it nearly had me done for too. Thanks for rescuing me. You can see why the Worldwound is so dangerous with things like this filling the area. Even one demon can kill a whole host of troops."
He kneels down next to the two dead elves, asking Erastil for their blessing on these hunters.

![]() |

"Three dead. But two alive, plus Cecilla and her team. Not perfect results, but certainly better than all of us being dead."
Amestra kneels beside Kargen to honor her countrymen that fell defending what is nominally her home, too.
"We should return them to General Tenasi in Greengold," she suggests even though she's mindful of their condition and the challenge that the return journey will present. "And I'll return this to Cecilla so that she can arrange for Lanverel's family to receive it," she adds (really to no one in particular) while patting the belt that she was graciously loaned.
I may be from Kyonin, but the full-blood family of an Uprooter would probably prefer to receive it from one of their own.
"Do we press on back to Mount Armiya, or sleep to recover before braving the Tanglebriar?"
Either way, on their way out of Fihralaz's marsh, she stops to retrieve her muzzle and loot his corpse, too, of course. She couldn't call herself a Pathfinder if she didn't.

Gervase flies over to Thoriel’s cocoon and says a brief prayer to Erastil before drawing her cold iron glaive to coup de gras the Abyssal-tainted deer inside.

“So I vote to gather together our ex-captives, and get the Abyss back to Mount Armiya as quickly as elvenly possible.”

GM supervillan |

The surviving elves refuse to linger in the swamp a moment longer. Though clearly in no shape to fight after their ordeal, they help to recover the fallen. They suggest heading back to Kethalia to rest before pressing on to Mount Armiya.
Amy recovers her magical muzzle, and finds that Fihralaz was armed with an enchanted harpoon and also carried a potion in a small pouch. Large +1 Keen Harpoon; Potion of Haste - that the demon would have drunk under certain circumstances but not before the start of combat.

![]() |

"This isn't the bestest of places to sleep but yeah, I think we'd fare better setting camp at Kethalia instead of trying to push all the way back in our current state," Nina agrees as she does what she can to help with the two surviving elves. "And I'll be able to call Inky back to me in the morning, so that'll be an extra set of eyes and ears on the lookout for trouble."
She offers up a simple prayer to Sarenrae for the fallen elves, saddened that they weren't able to be saved but still thankful that they managed to get to the other two in time.

"Could Inky and Turin bear 300 lb between them?"
Gervase begins loading her 'cocoon litter' with cold iron, flanked either side by her upthrust spear and polearm.
She stands, turns around and backs into her makeshift pole-harness, grasping the blunt ends of both poles, like she's about to pull a wheel-less rickshaw.
"I can easily pull 100 lb of ingots and maintain a medium burden."
"And won't it be good to see Inky again! I missed having her around, Nina."

Kargen loads his handy haversack with some of the ingots as well.

"Same as Quiella, if we don't mind it taking a little longer to get back then Inky can probably carry some of the load," Nina replies. "If we spread the load out across most of us, including Inky and Túrin, I'd say we can probably carry all or most of it. But we don't need to bog ourselves down too much either; there could still be other demons roaming around out here."

![]() |

Changing the subject, the dive ranger adds. "Do you not normally carry a potion of fly, Amy? Not afraid of flying are you?"
"Oh, no it's certainly not that," Amy laughs. "Honestly, I just keep forgetting. But it's on my list for when we get back," she says as she pats the pocket where she keeps her notebook.
She then joins Kargen in loading ingots into her backpack. "Nice bag. Did you get it at Mr. Jeem's by the Grand Lodge? He always has the best magical bags and traveling gear, don't you think?"
She also has a handy haversack, so another 60 or so pounds there, too.

Gervase looks sceptical. “But she doesn’t want others to mention her name if patronising the place, because she’s had to trash it and slaughter a few of their employees since then.”

Remember that Tùrin has 2 CON damage - although if you have the means to cast a Lesser Restoration on him before sleeping then you may do so. Neither are likely to be in great danger given that Quiella has Remove Disease via Lay on Hands but there are potential consequences from failed saves.

Kargen glances at Amy. "Actually yes, he sold me the bag and a couple magic arrows if I remember correctly. He even offered to have it changed color if I wanted."
He looks at Gervase in surprise. "Did you say she's had to slaughter a few of the employees? I find it hard to think she still welcome if that's the case."

"I don't imagine she is, Kargen."
Gervase shrugs "Though I'm not sure how anyone who can't cast eighth level spells could stop her doing anything she didn't want to do."

Fort (DC 18): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
"Eugh...I can't wait to get out of this place," Nina groans as she wakes the next morning feeling under the weather. "The whole thing needs to be cleansed with an army of clerics...and then set on fire and then probably cleansed again for good measure!"
As the others begin to wake and prepare to break camp, she begins the process of calling Inky back to her side once more.

An odd girl in the Scarab Sages....Wait, no way!
"Gervase, are you talking about Eadie Navhelan? Do you know her, too?"
"'Odd' is a bit of an understatement, but she's certainly a sweet gal, and a very strong fighter."
And quite 'skillful' in other ways too, Amy recalls fondly.
Amestra and YiM's character Eadie Navhelan may have "done the dirty" in a drunken all-girl 3-way with a named NPC. But details are sparse, and there was much alcohol involved.

"Could be? I only know of her, Amy. Though I understand she's been mentioned in a few Pathfinder Chronicles."
But please don't tell my -1 cleric of Calistria! ;)
