not sure how high the ceilings are here but he'll go up about 20 ft. if he can.
The building is partially collapsed, so consider it open to the sky.
Nina calls on a friend, who calls on his make-believe friends and takes to the air.
Quiella, perhaps noting the effectiveness of Thoriel's Shield, makes one of her own.
Amy is quite fascinated by the opponents' abilities. She waves her sword around a bit whilst she commentates.
Gervase turns her bow on the WISC, stuffing several arrows into it. Only the iterative missed.

Thoriel, you'd provoke an AoO for casting where you were stood - I'll handwave this one since I believe you can autopass the DC for a level 1 spell but do please mention when you're casting defensively even for a level 1.
Thoriel lunges, her blade wreathed in lightning! In a flurry of sword blows she blasts chunks of flesh off the unnatural predator. Two hits, no crits.
A globe of darkness emanates from the ruins, where one of the babau was hiding. The globe moves forwards, swallowing up Thoriel and obscuring the battlefield. Ambient light condition is Dim Light, which I have basically handwaved as you'll be using Wayfinders and such to explore. Within the 20' area I have marked on the map around Magenta the ambient condition is now Dark: without darkvision you'll have a 50% miss chance and cannot use vision to locate a target, with darkvision you are unaffected.
The second babau, under cover of the darkness at least so it thinks, sends two sharp-edged discs towards Thoriel...
chakram: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
chakram: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
...even in the darkness, Thoriel's defences hold. Being effectively blind in the darkness they can target your flatfooted AC with a +2 bonus, but they still miss. They do remove your last mirror image though.
The wolf-in-sheep's-clothing's tendrils lash out at the magus again...

“Quiella can you channel healing but exclude the WISC?”

Oh, gods, not again! Amestra thinks as she hears Thoriel's scream cut off. Then the darkness envelops everything. This is bad.
“Can anyone see where Thoriel is? I have a potion of darkvision but I fear it will take too long to deploy to Quiella.”
“Quiella can you channel healing but exclude the WISC?”
"I can deal with the darkness. Somebody help her."
And someone help me, too. Cause I can't take the beating that thing just laid down on Thoriel.Rapier in one hand, she grabs the ioun stone that's already in orbit around her head with the other. One wouldn't even notice what appears to be a regular old ioun torch, necessary for her given her poor half-elven eyesight. But this one is different. This one is empowered to overcome even the most heinous darkness. And since she (they) can't afford to have it broken, she grabs it as she runs towards Thoriel to keep the demons from targeting it.

I just remembered Kargen has Target of Opportunity. When an ally makes a ranged attack within 30 feet (such as Gervase), he gets to use an immediate to attack the same target.
As Gervase's arrow strikes the remaining demon, Kargen takes advantage of the hit to draw, nock, and fire his own arrow in a blur of speed.
Then he steps a bit closer to the demon and unloads more cold iron into the creature.

Do summoned azata's gain the Celestial template and therefore a 1/day Smite Evil?
Not to my knowledge; gaining the Celestial/Fiendish template would seem to imply that it only works on creatures who aren't already celestial or fiendish in nature to begin with.
Though Nina does suffer under the babaus' attacks, she doesn't fall - not yet. Instead, she grins widely as her allies retaliate by taking down one of the two and raining down arrows on the one that remains.
"Yeah, well, gnomes are 'annoying' right? Gotta live up to the stereotype and all," she responds as she attempts to drive her lance into the creature.

GM supervillan |
Once you've healed up, you are able to investigate the hall. It's clearly much too late for the gnome alchemist who fell prey to the Wolf', but under the aberration's body you find a trapdoor that leads to a storage area where you find the cache of cold iron that Uprooters left there. Unfortunately, most of it is in the form of ingots (several hundred pounds weight of cold iron ingots in fact). There's also a small amount of metallic paste - similar to the more well-known Silversheen, this substance, Deepsheen, temporarily grants weapons the properties of cold iron. There are 6 pots of the paste.
Transporting the cold iron ingots could be problematic but maybe you have a solution. Then you have a decision to make: do you rest in Kethalia, which you are confident is as safe as you can get now, or do you press on? Risk to the captured Uprooters undoubtedly increases if you rest, but perhaps they're all dead already?
Amestra Veen |
Standing astride Thoriel when the last demon drops, Amestra giggles and raises an eyebrow when Kargen recoils from touching the lovely elven maiden. "She's not gonna bite you," she says with a laugh. "At least, I don't think she will. But maybe don't aim the wand right at her butt next time, even if she is face-down prone and unconscious," she finishes as she turns her attention to the Wolf'.
Yeah, she's abso-frelliin'-lutely gorgeous, so I bet he wouldn't react that way if it were me. Or maybe he's just been out here in the woods with five girls and a reindeer for a bit tooooo long. She giggles again, and it's unclear to anyone standing nearby if it's to something in her own head, or to the joy she's taking as she begins dissecting the wolf-in-sheep's-clothing.
"Amazing. These tentacles run underground, as if they were originally roots and evolved. Or maybe they were magically altered. Wouldn't be the first crazy critter some wizard lost control of. I'll have to check the Chronicles and Archives when we get back," she murmurs to herself as se takes even more notes with each new slice into the horrendous beast.
"Ooh, hey, look what's underneath this thing," Amestra exclaims when they locate the trapdoor and the stash of cold iron. "Six pots of this stuff. I'd like one for my rapier, if I may," she asks as she sits down on a pile of ingots and carefully cleans the monster gore from her knife. "I hate to say it, but I wonder if we shouldn't rest here. It seems as safe as we can get. We can block the trap door and sleep in here," she says assessing the storeroom. "Getting Inky back in the morning gives us a flight option, and Quiella's amazing, but that much healing must take something out of her."
She's quite aware of the threat to Lanverel and the Uprooters, but feels that a rested and prepared team is more likely to succeed. It's just logical.

in character she wants to press on, but out of character I'm comfortable with whatever level of risk the rest of you are willing to take on
"I fear for what may happen to the Uprooters if we don't press on to find them."
Nina Brightspark |
"I mean, I work better when I've got Inky with me but the longer we wait, the more likely it'll be that Lanverel and the others are dead when we find them," Nina responds, fidgeting anxiously all the while. "I've still got more friends I can call on to help if we need the backup or distraction. By the way, thanks for the help," she continues, smiling at her summoned azata friend as he finishes up the last bit of healing.
______________
The azata has Cure Serious Wounds as 2/day SLA so he'll top off the last bit of damage Nina and Thoriel have before he poofs.
Quiella |
Ach, I wish I had known about the 2x Cure Serious Wounds. That could have saved a bunch of spell slots
Nina Brightspark |
I think the GM would probably be willing to let us retcon that if we ask nicely? :)

“I don’t need any of the Deepsheen, and while 300 lb of cold iron would obviously help the war effort in the Worldwound, goodness knows how we get it back to Absalom.”
"She's not gonna bite you. At least, I don't think she will."
“Saint Asmod on the debate team, Amy! You are such a ridiculous flirt!”
Gervase moves up behind the detective, to observe her Chronicling.

Bored silly after less than a minute, the ranger accepts her wand back off Quiella with a smile and considers the state of the team and the Mission.
“The fight with the Hezrou commander, Fihralaz is going to be wicked — but personally I’m one (irrelevant) second valence spell off being at full strength.”
Gervase exhales, blowing her hair off her forehead. “But that’s just me.”
“I think this comes down to, what is more important — the Mission, or the best chance (not a guarantee) of the six of us surviving.”
“At this point I couldn’t care less about the gold, prestige or whether the Master of Spells gifts Queen Galfrey with a platoon of elite Kyonin rangers.”
“To me, it’s how much we put ourselves at risk to rescue the elves.”
You can see the ranger re-run through her logic in her mind, to see if she agrees with her own conclusion.
“As such, I tentatively vote to push on without resting. However, if the group decides the other way, I will help defend that decision with my dying breath.”

Kargen Hapspring |
Kargen nods. "We should press on to see if we can rescue Lanverel and the others. Not in blind rage, but in earnest to save one more life from the demons, especially one that can be a weapon herself."
Nina Brightspark |
"Yeah...if we were worse off, then I'd say we should take the chance and rest up because it doesn't do anyone good if we rush in at half-strength and get ourselves killed," Nina nods. "But since it looks like we're still doing well on resources then I think we should press on too."
Thoriel Liltamael |
Once the healing kicks in, Thoriel rolls over with a slight grunt and looks up at Amestra standing astride her, not showing any sign of embarassment at her somewhat comprising position. "Hello there! How long was I out? Thanks for the heals by the way!"
Getting back to her feet, the young elf promptly begins to tidy herself up, flicking and combing her hair back into place and straightening up her outer robes and shiny armor. "Well that was a little unsettling. I haven't been manhandled like that in years. Not since my old job back in the Calistrian temple!" Noticing Kargen's blushed cheeks she gives him a smile and a wink. "No, not your little love tap, Kargen...that filthy thing!" She kicks away a limp tentacle from beside one of her boots, with a scowl.
"I've had rest enough...of sorts, although it was more like a short nap. Let's just press on, I guess. I for one probably won't sleep too peacefully anyway after my encounter with that!"
Amestra Veen |
Amestra nods in acquiescence to the group's decision. Checking the items in her bandolier, she belatedly realizes that she probably no longer needs that oil of daylight that's been taking up space and swaps it out for the cold iron paste.
"Ready when you are."
GM supervillan |
Barely having time to catch your breath, you decide that it's best to find Fihralaz and the Uprooters sooner rather than later and you press on into the Tanglebriar.
I need 3 DC14 Fort saves each please. These are like the ones you made earlier - hybrid poison/disease saves but any situational bonuses you might have need to apply to both to count.

The Tanglebriar is unforgiving. As you go deeper into the corrupted forest it feels as if the very air itself is opposing you. Suddenly, you stumble upon a bright spot amidst the gloom and the filth. A clearing meant for mystical rites interrupts the ongoing riot of disfigured flora and fauna. Under the shadow of a mighty oak, eleven large stones engraved with runes form a circle around untainted grass. One stone is far larger than the rest. The green grass blades are young and weak, but nonetheless natural.
As you pass into the clearing, a smaller oak transforms into a horned, cloven-hoofed creature. He leers at you, his gaze lingering on Thoriel's bosom. "My, my, how enchanting! Allow me to entertain you, sweet things. Have you heard the one about the traveller who despoiled Tanglebriar's only unmolested grass? It left him in stitches! Ha-ha!"

"We're suffering the death of a thousand cuts," Amestra grumbles as another thorn bites into her leg. "And I have no idea what this poison is or how to counteract it," she whines (admittedly) as she bends over to spew what little remains in her stomach.
As she raises her head, she spots the clearing and its most interesting inhabitant.

"A satyr," she whispers to her friends. "Though he seems to be suffering from the effects of the woods, too. He'll likely want to engage in some ribald humor and almost certainly get a bit more 'physical' given the number of women we have here. But as a fey, I believe he's mostly harmless as long as we're friendly."
She enters the clearing hoping for some relief from the poisonous thorns and to take the opportunity to engage with their host. "Hello," she calls out with a smile. "I am Amestra, and those ... I mean ... she is Thoriel." Amy knows exactly what the satyr was leering at and makes a play of the purposeful misstep with a sly smile.
"And what was the name of this virile traveler who despoiled Tanglebriar's grass?"

"Always a pleasure meeting a man who can focus on two things at once." Thoriel lets out a short laugh at the leering creature's wandering eyes and the banter between him and Amestra. "...and who is also so proficient in the highest form of humour...satyr! Speaking of jokes, I remember one. 'Why do satyrs like playing flutes? Because their horns don't work!'" she smiles through another short burst of laughter. "Although from my experience, most are all too keen to prove that they do!"
Aid Diplo: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
"Seriously, though, do you live out here all on your own? Have you seen anyone else passing by lately?"
