After what seems to be months, Piri is commenting on how deep this well must be, when suddenly a creature bursts out of the fetid water and tears into his neck! Piri falls into the well, gurgling.

As the ghoulish creature turns toward the rest of you, he grunts and licks his would-be lips with a lonk, forked tongue. You here others in the doorway just to the north.

I love you.

Valeria is horrified at the sight of Piri being pulled into that fetid water, but keeps her head cool and collected. She lets go of the low, almost quiet musical hum she was maintaining to enable her detection of magic, accelerating both tempo and volume, seamlessly leading into a song of courage for her companions!

Let us see if the Andoren military anthem will quicken the blood of my companions here... at the very least it might anger these ghoulish creatures into making a mistake...

Common Rule forever, a beacon in the night!
We shall never bow to kings,

Bimble, the old graying gnome, marches forward waving his banner fearlessly. He had taken up a new banner so as to not draw attention--the colors of the Betony family. But in spirit, his banner stood proudly for Princess Eutropia, whose claims he supported in earnest. "Onward, save Piri!"

He conjures a spot of grease to slow down the advancing ghouls! Reflex DC15 or fall prone, usual grease effects.

In this case, it is Bimple's vast knowledge of religion that leads him to conclude these are typical ghouls without anything more sinister or deadly. Still, that is enough - their bite can cause ghoul fever, something you will want to avoid. And even a minor scratch can cause paralysis.

Valeria passes the crossbow to Bimble. "Mage Bimble! your arrival timing was impeccable! we were expecting you in the next few days, based on Martella's last letter. Glad to see you made it ahead of time. Here, you may use the crossbow if you wish. It's name is Dignity's Barb and it was used by a famous Taldan general in ancient times. Legend has it that with it, he killed an enemy war chieftain in one shot through a snowstorm!"

Seems like the last ghoul is super-dead.

"I fear my timing was not soon enough," says Bimble with a glance toward Piri, his staff clanking on the ground with each step as he approaches. "You must be Lady Valeria. You may not know me, but I have heard of you. I am a fan of opera, you see--there was a time when I tried to write opera myself. And rumor has it you were something of a rising star."

He shakes his head when offered Dignity's Barb. "I promise these old bones do not deserve a crossbow of such refinement and worth. I'll be lucky to hit the side of a barn with it!"

He start heading toward Piri's body, dismissing the grease he conjured a wave of his hand. "I shall be your esteemed tutor, Lady Valeria. For a young lady can always benefit from learning and erudition. Martella has sent two more as well. A baker and a swordswoman. The swordswoman has guarded me for quite a time. The baker admittedly has done the opposite before, but that was not of her choosing."

The cursed strain of ghoul fever that afflicted Lady Sandaris would not let her rest for long, however, and she rose again under the next new moon. Eventually
her family bound her coffin with wards and blessings from several good-aligned gods to keep the war hero in a blessed oblivion. This peace lasted for a thousand years until flooding washed and rotted away those protections, and Marjorine, now calling herself the Queen Without a Face, rose again to prowl the moors.

Valeria continues her song, but seeing the deformed undead lady, her eyes widen in recognition! Instead of testing the nerves of her friends with this appalling new information, Valeria decides to throw her voice into the next octave during the next verse, to both alert and embolden her stalwart companions!

With Sara endangered, Capricia doesn't hesitate. Swinging her long legs over the edge of the well's wall, she plummets into the darkness, falcata at the ready.

I went with the same rolls that Sara attempted. She's fighting defensively (AC 25) and using opportune parry and riposte.

Sveng frowns at the gap in his knowledge. He hopes the creature is not particularly dangerous, as since it is badly outnumbered they should be able to dispatch of it quickly otherwise.

Still, he aids with a crossbow bolt, if nothing else for the time being.

Capricia - do you think the ghast is in the well? It is not - it is coming in from the other room. You can still jump in if you like, though.

Ugh--yes I did. Just found the map, but don't see ghast lady on it yet. Capricia would move to engage, striking if possible. I'll roll an attack in a spoiler just in case.
