Torsten Runeforger
"Aye then. Ready to bash a head or two in. Y'all ready to get moving?" The dwarf said.
Your Benevolent Dictator
Cressida nods, "We have the man who sold Gaekhen's body to Rolth in custody: a simpleton named Elkaris. He spilled everything when we told him what was going on and how much trouble he was in. In any event, Elkaris says he delivered the body via wheelbarrow to a partially-collapsed mausoleum deep in Potter's Ward, near the southern edge. A toppled and headless statue of a sword-wielding gargoyle lay in the dirt near the mausoleum's entrance - he was told to leave the body behind the gargoyle. That's the best place to start the search.
"Be careful, though. It's possible that 'Rolth the necromancer' refers to Rolth Lamm. He's been a thorn in my side for over a decade. The prime suspect in a large number of gruesome murders, but I've never been able to find any evidence against him."
Yhrrilka
Upon hearing the necromancer's full name, Ril's golden eyes almost pop out of her head in surprise. "Hold on. Lamm? Rolth Lamm?" Yhrrilka glares at Cressida. "What is his connection to the late Gaedren Lamm?" She whirls back to Macaria and Torsten. "One of the things we found at Lamm's, it said something..." she furiously tries to recall the inscription.
Yhrrilka
Yeah, I'd looked that up, I was just leaving it open for one of the other to 'return volley' on that point. :)
"Unbelievable." Yhrrilka shakes her head in disbelief as the Marshal confirms Lamm's parentage. "Well, we've stopped most of the evils of Gaedren Lamm, I guess it's time to throw away the last rotten fruit of that tree." She looks to Macaria and Torsten. "To the Dead Warrens, then?"
Torsten Runeforger
”Aye, let’s get to it. The dead don’t wait this time around.”
Your Benevolent Dictator
The Gray District is a mournful place even by day. An unnatural stillness is in the air, and this ominous feeling is most noticeable in Potter's Ward. Locating the entrance to the Dead Warrens is a simple task using the directions you were given. Unfortunately, Gaekhen's body is not present - although you do find a wheelbarrow trail leading into a mausoleum. Interestingly, several smaller humanoid tracks clutter the site as well. Inside the mausoleum, you find a trapdoor in the floor that leads down into the dark.
Yhrrilka
Ril turns to Macaria. "I hope you've got a lantern or something?" She opens the trapdoor and takes a look.
In the same way I retcon-shopped for holy water, if Macaria needs it, she might wanna pick up a few sunrods...
Torsten Runeforger
”I’ll go first. Then Mac, then Ril. Slowest one sets the pace. Ril protects against ambush. Mac blasts apart any ghosties.” Torsten said, as he motioned for Ril to let him go first.
Casting enhance before we go in. Lasts 4 hours
Yhrrilka
That's another good point I almost forgot...
Seeing Torsten cast spells on himself reminds Yhrrilka to do the same.
Deflection Aegis for another +1, noted in my stat line.
Your Benevolent Dictator
I've updated the map in the Campaign Header. It's editable now, so feel free to place yourselves as desired. Macaria, if you want to do any pre-buffing, feel free.
The Dead Warrens are dimly lit by patches of eerily glowing mold that fills the chambers with a cold blue light. The air is musty and damp, with the stink of rotting flesh always present.
D1
This large room is supported by four wide pillars of stone. The ceiling above arches in a dome nearly twenty feet high. The walls are lined with skeletons caked into the mud - adult human bones mostly, but here and there smaller bones might be from halflings or perhaps children. Fifteen-foot-square pits sit to the east and west, each filled with a large heap of hundreds of bones. To the south, a crude hole has been gouged out of the wall, providing access to a tunnel.
Macaria: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Torsten: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Familiar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
Yhrrilka: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Macaria and Torsten realize that some of these bones are moving. Several skeletons lurk in the bone pile to the west, and the bones of a large creature are animating in the pile to the east.
Torsten Runeforger
"An undead horde?" Torsten said, as he saw the bones begin to move. "Hey, Mac, this be something ye can blast apart?" He asked. "If so, then Ril, I think we should focus on keepin' her safe while she does her thing." He finished, never taking his eyes off of the incoming threat.
Idea being holding the chokepoint while Macaria channels the incoming skeletons into bonedust
Macaria
Before:
Maca offers to cast a spell for better illumination She has the Light cantrip.
Now:
Maca positions herself just behind Torsten, ready to summon her otherworldly energies.
Yhrrilka
I am having a serious problem placing my token on the map. Could someone place Ril next to Torsten?
Eyeing up the moving piles of bones, Yhrrilka says, "Yes, I think that makes good sense." With blade in one hand and fire in the other, she stands ready to face whatever shows up.
Whatever's animating in the east, is it formed enough yet to apply Studied Target? Assuming not, action permitting, I'll ready a Searing Blast for the first target to appear from the east.
Yhrrilka
Putting rolls here in case that's the answer to my question in Discussion...
Searing Blast damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (8, 1) + 4 = 13 Fire
Torsten Runeforger
Good point...
If an enemy gets into punching range: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
Damage: 1d4 + 16 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 16 + 4 = 22
Macaria
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Ril, you need to select your token and "bring forward" so as to put it on top of the background instead of under it.
Ishta walks to the room where all undead seem to be. She stands by the door and invokes the power of the Upper and Lower Realms to castigate the aberrations.
Channeling: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 2) = 8 Will DC 17 for half
Yhrrilka
That did it, thanks so much!
Your Benevolent Dictator
@Yhrrilka: It's concealed under the bones, so Studied Target won't apply until it comes out. That ability will be good to go on your next turn.
Will: 5d20 ⇒ (4, 20, 5, 10, 17) = 56
Macaria's divine power obliterates the smaller skeletons, but the creature from the eastern bone pit is significantly more powerful. It appears to have once been an owlbear, and while death has taken its feathers, the beast's legendary fury remains. As it closes in, Torsten unleashes a powerful punch that rocks it back - and draws its attention. That's probably for the best, as Yhrrilka's hastily-aimed projectile narrowly misses.
Bite: 1d20 + 6 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 6 + 2 = 17 Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Your turns.
Torsten Runeforger
Move action Trip: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
Snap Kick if trip worked. If the attack of opportunity is successful, the creature must make a successful Reflex save or become staggered until the end of their next turn: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (12) + 12 = 24
Damage: 1d4 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19
Standard action Hit: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
Damage: 1d4 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18
Free action Flurry: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (4) + 12 = 16
Damage: 1d4 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 20
With the skeletal owlbear within arm's reach, Torsten attempted to take it's legs out from beneath it. Given the obvious height and weight disparity, it was a tall order. But luckily he had a low center of gravity and only reached the skeleton's knees. Putting all of his strength into a blow to the back of it's leg, he quickly moved to follow it up with a pair of rapid punches to it's ribs.
Yhrrilka
OK, but this turn I'll be forgoing Studied Target for another ability...
With a nod, Ril gestures to Torsten for an opening. Her blade flashes with fire, burning the creature even as it deflects off a bone.
Move Action: set up a Tactic, Aggressive Flanking (while within the affected area of this tactic, allied creatures are considered to be flanking as long as they both threaten the same creature, regardless of their comparative positioning).
Standard: Energy Strike.
Gladius Attack (flanking): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 2 = 21
Gladius damage (Fatal Thrust and SA): 1d6 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ (1) + 3 + (5, 4) = 13 Slashing
Searing Blast damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (8, 6) + 4 = 18 Fire
Macaria
In case the skeletowlbear is still standing:
Macaria decides she ought to finish the undead before it can deal further damage, and calls for her dark energies again.
Channeling: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 2) = 8 Will DC 17 for half

Torsten trips - and then absolutely clobbers the skeletal owlbear.
Macaria: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Torsten: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18
Familiar: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (16) + 3 = 19
Yhrrilka: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
A tunnel to the south leads out of this chamber, but everyone except Macaria (who's farther back and doesn't have a good view) notices a well-hidden passage leading out of the eastern bone pit. It appears to be sized for Small creatures.
Torsten Runeforger
"A shortcut, maybe? Not that I'd want to squeeze into anything so small. Seems like a great way of getting killed. It does mean that if we keep going that the enemy will always have a way to get behind us."
Yhrrilka
Ril frowns at the thought of fighting in such close quarters as that tunnel. "You're right, a space like that is no fun. But if someone tries to get behind us, I promise you I will make them regret it." A small ball of flame flares in her hand to emphasize the point.
Yes, my vote is definitely for the south passage.
Your Benevolent Dictator
Going to make an executive decision and assume you check the left fork first.
Rank with the stink of sweat and mud, this cavern contains four filthy straw pallets and a low table covered with dice and a miniature maze of carved clay. A pair of white-haired blue-skinned humanoids are playing some sort of game involving pliers, hammers, numbered stones, and a rat. As you enter, they pick up strange hooked weapons and attack!
Macaria: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (19) + 4 = 23
Torsten: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Yhrrilka: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21
Enemies: 2d20 + 12 ⇒ (5, 18) + 12 = 35 (average 17)
Knowledge(dungeoneering) to identify the creatures?
Familiar: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (6) + 0 = 6 (nope)
Map's been updated, and the party won initiative, so you're good to go. XD
Yhrrilka
Unless either of you has a plan this would invalidate...
Yhrrilka strides into the room, sword in her right hand, pointing with her left, as a blast of fire streaks toward the nearest of these creatures.
Sadly I don't yet have Kn(dun), that and planes are still outstanding among Knowledge class skills for me. Oh well, Move action to enter the room, Standard for Searing Blast.
Searing Blast Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 vs touch
Searing Blast damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (2, 4) + 4 = 10 Fire
Torsten Runeforger
With no capability to attack anything outside of punching distance, Tosten stayed next to Ril and readied himself for the creatures to attack.
Counter Punch enemy in range: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17
Damage: 1d4 + 16 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 16 + 4 = 22

SR DC 14: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Yhrrilka's blast washes over her target to no apparent effect. It seems these creatures are warded against magic - at least partially. As the pair closes in, Torsten lands a solid hit on the first to approach. Rather than crying out, it giggles madly. The two lash out with their strange hooked weapons in unison.
Torsten: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Yhrrilka: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6 Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Movement sounds from behind you, and a moment later, a third creature comes charging from the other tunnel. From the room it's exiting, you hear the buzz of stirges.
Map's been updated. You're up again.
Yhrrilka
A little irked at the lack of response to her magic, Ril shifts her grip on her sword. "I can play it this way, too."
Same drill as last fight. Move action to set up Aggressive Flanking (Torsten and I both count as Flanking the guy on the left), and Standard for Energy Strike (to the guy that we both flank, on the left, as Sam Wilson would say).
Gladius Attack (Flanking): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 2 = 17
Gladius damage (Fatal Thrust, SA): 1d6 + 3 + 2d6 ⇒ (4) + 3 + (6, 3) = 16 Piercing
Searing Blast CL check: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Searing Blast damage (Energy Strike): 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (8, 3) + 4 = 15 Fire
Torsten Runeforger
Move action Trip Left first and attack him before right: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 13 + 2 = 28
Snap kick if trip worked: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 13 + 2 = 30
Damage: 1d4 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18
Standard action Hit: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 13 + 2 = 22
Damage: 1d4 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19
Free action Flurry: 1d20 + 13 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 13 + 2 = 19
Damage: 1d4 + 16 ⇒ (4) + 16 = 20
With Ril having set them up, Torsten followed her lead. Using his sheer mass, he reached out and grabbed one of the creatures and attempted to throw it off balance and onto the ground. From there it would be a simple matter of stomping onto it's head, putting said head between a rock and a hard place (in this case his foot).
Yhrrilka
I'd also like to point out that if Torsten's Snap Kick hit, this clown "must make a successful Reflex save or become staggered until the end of their next turn." I was just reading this stuff after looking at Torsten's post in Discussion. :) What's your save DC, anyway?
Macaria
Standing where she is and not panicking over the small blue guy appearing just behind her, Maca conjures forth her signature netherworld energies.
Channel, DC 17 for half: 3d6 ⇒ (2, 3, 5) = 10
Your Benevolent Dictator
Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
Torsten and Yhrrilka work together to take down their opponents. Macaria's divine energy then washes over the fallen creatures, making sure their journey to the River of Souls will be swift. The other creature manages to resist the worst of this ability, though, and closes in quickly.
Macaria: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
In addition, from the other chamber, a pair of curious stirges approach.
New round. Your turns.
Yhrrilka
Macaria, are you going to withdraw to the other side of us? Or is there another plan I'm not yet seeing here?
Macaria
The plan was to keep doing area damage while five-foot-stepping. Was that roll an attack against Macaria, GM?
Maca dodges the creature's attack, steps backwards and calls for pain again. "Your resistance is futile!"
Channel, DC 17 for half: 3d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 6) = 12
10 channels left. Can someone move me one square backwards, please?
Torsten Runeforger
Standard action Hit: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (7) + 13 = 20
Damage: 1d4 + 16 ⇒ (3) + 16 = 19
Free action Flurry: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (16) + 13 = 29
Damage: 1d4 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18
As Macaria stepped back, Torsten moved in. And in doing so he gave the creature a Janderhoff Handshake by grabbed it's shoulders and delivering a bone-cracking headbutt. Luckily, his own skull was reinforced by his magic.
Yhrrilka
The truck bomb says, "Boom!" :D
Ril smiles, seemingly quite amused at Torsten. "I think that was how you wanted handle your sailor friend, nyet?" she asks, as she waits to launch a fire blast at whatever comes.
Swift to maintain the Tactic, Move, Standard to Ready a Searing Blast on the first target to flap its way into view.
Searing Blast Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (3) + 8 = 11 vs touch
Searing Blast damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (8, 3) + 4 = 15 Fire
Is it me or have the dice been a little cold for me? /harrumph
Your Benevolent Dictator
Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
The creature once again shakes off the worst of Macaria's pain, but then Torsten arrives and headbutts it into unconsciousness. The dwarf is within reach of the stirges, though, and one is quick to seize the opportunity.
vs Touch AC: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
(not even close, so no blood drain and potential disease this round)
New round. You're up - and Macaria will likely finish this based on the Trinia chase.
Torsten Runeforger
Move action Trip: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (2) + 12 = 14
Snap kick if trip worked: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (1) + 12 = 13
Damage: 1d4 + 15 ⇒ (1) + 15 = 16
Don't think he even can trip it...? Logically a flying creature can't be tripped, but trip just makes something prone, so I don't want to assume that it is immune to that
Standard action Hit: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Damage: 1d4 + 15 ⇒ (4) + 15 = 19
Free action Flurry: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27
Damage: 1d4 + 15 ⇒ (3) + 15 = 18
With one stirge in reach, Torsten reached out to grab it so he could throw it to the ground, but then thought better of it. The insect like creature was flying, and while he might have been able to bounce it off the ground, that didn't mean it would stay there. Instead, when it came at him he instead deftly lifted his leg up and stomped on it.
Yhrrilka
GM, do I have line of sight/effect to the second stirge? Does it have cover on account of the first one?
Ril does her best to aim past Torsten stomping the first creature into oblivion, launching a fire blast at the rearmost one.
Searing Blast Attack: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26 vs touch
Searing Blast damage: 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (4, 7) + 4 = 15 Fire
Macaria
With both stirges most probably turned into fairy dust, Maca looks at her companions and asks "Anyone hurt?"
Yhrrilka
Breathing deeply, Ril turns to respond to Macaria. "No," she shakes her head in response. Slightly sheepishly, she says to the other woman, "Sorry, Maca. I was so eager to get the ones up front that I forgot to cover the rear. I'll try to not let it happen again."
With her boot, she toes one of the humanoids that still has a recognizable head. "Who were these jokers, anyway?"
Torsten Runeforger
"No idea." Torsten said, as he tried to shake the gore off of his foot. "But I don't think that they were undead. Ghouls, maybe? Never seen one of those either. Even my little guy here isn't feeding me information on them." He motioned at his backpack, in which his ioun wyrd was sheltering.
"But whatever they were, they're dead. And we're alive. Let's keep moving while we still have momentum on our side."
I liked how triggering one room also meant that enemies in a different one responded. All too often encounters are one room only, even when that doesn't make sense
Yhrrilka
"I couldn't agree more," the half-orc said, casting a glance around the room.
If nothing in this room immediately catches Ril's eye as worth investigating/looting, I think we should check the room from which they tried their ill-advised pincer move.
Your Benevolent Dictator

An easy way for me to increase the challenge is to play enemies more intelligently. XD
There's nothing of interest in this room, so you check where the third creature came from. That room holds three wooden tables stained red with old bloodshed. To the east stands a ten-foor-wide hutch with wicker doors opening into a straw-lined cage. A body lies on one of the tables, serving as food for a quartet of stirges.
