The inside of the White Sands Lodge’s crystal dome is balmy compared to the frigid Triaxian winter outside. The copper dragon Zafeldrin sits on a platform surrounded by flickering holoscreens. Several other Starfinder agents wait nearby, conversing with one another or fiddling with comm units and datapads.
After a moment, the dragon diverts his attention from the screens to the Starfinders gathered before him, offering a toothy, excited grin. “Ah. The last to arrive. Welcome, agents, to the White Sands Lodge!” The tip of Zafeldrin’s tail twitches with barely contained anticipation.
“Now that everyone is assembled, let’s get right to it. Have you ever heard of Cadascon?” The dragon waves a claw and the aerial image of a partially buried, ruined city built into the side of a mountain appears on a holoscreen.
“Cadascon is a city in the Drakelands that dates back ages before the Gap. As far as we can tell, there are few existing records of who resided there, or why they don’t reside there anymore. When the Society finally managed to acquire the necessary permits and permissions to investigate the area, I put out a call for the sharpest minds we have. This initial foray won’t be going into the city proper. I identified four locations through aerial surveillance. I know this doesn’t sound like the most exciting of missions, but I’d be prepared for the worst regardless. If you determine the area is safe enough, we can begin establishing a base of operations nearby and prepare to bring in scientists and archeologists to examine the site more thoroughly"
“It’s my hope that a new archeological discovery will get the Pact Worlds thinking about the good things the Society has had a hand in. But still, I know things have been stressful for many of our agents, which is why I’ve decided to throw a little soiree for you all before we depart tomorrow. In fact, I was hoping you could assist me in finishing the preparations for dinner while I finish checking the equipment for the mission.
“Lastly, I hope you’ll all use this joint mission as an opportunity to get to know your fellow agents. The Society’s strength comes from the bonds between us and our ability to work together to accomplish things we never could alone. While investigating the city, I expect you to look out for one another. Now, does anyone have any questions?
Never Deal with a dragon, chummers!

As he exits the shuttle onto Triaxus, Baurquathus mutters, "I go from the hell that was effectively a war to this place...stuck in what....200 years of winter.....sigh"
Going to his comm he mutters, through chattering teeth, "[/b]Jess, are you CERTAIN you don't have any gigs for me....I would much rather be on Verces or ANYWHERE else but this frozen ball of ice...."[/b]
The calm voice calls from the comms"You said you wanted time off to help with your Society duties, so the SRO's are off for at least the next 2 or 3 months. There might be a gig on Apostae coming up...."
As he trudges from the landing pad toward the 'guild house' here on Triaxus, Bar groans...."Not Apostae. It took us almost 3 months...and 5 gigs worth of money, to remove the viruses that the drow inserted into our comms, our recording gear, even my guitar! Okay....anywhere else but Triaxus AND Apostae."
Getting to the Chapter house, Bar heads into the blessed warmth. Taking off his coat, you can see a male Pahtra wearing a coat with the Rusty SRO's emblem on the back. A guitar case is in his hand, along with a duffel bag.

The large vesk hissed as she turned to Zafeldrin. "What dangerssss can we expect?"
“Aside from seismic activity or mundane Triaxian predators, it pains me to admit that I don’t know. Most of the city appears to be underground, and the drones we’ve sent to scout the area lose their connection to us if they venture too close. The interference doesn’t appear to be intentional tampering. I believe it might be perpetuated by certain elements in the ground.”

A hylki rushes into the dome slightly out of breath, a small ball of bright red light floating behind him. He takes a second to catch the breath that had run away from him, as he adjusts the freebooter armor and the white shirt with ruffle at the collar and along the underneath the armor before saluting perfunctorily, "Sorry, no good cabs around here! Took me a little while to find the right place! I was definitely not taking notes about the way the snow flurries!" With a second to think, a small amount of red energy flitting underneath his hair, he pauses to consider the name.

Prelude
Croaker wakes up in the shuttle. His head hurts tremendously as his vision returns back to normal. He remembers going yesterday to Del Shara bar in little akiton with Geo. Now he wakes on the shuttle. As he sits on the bench his leg hits the chair and he feels a metal bracelet on his leg.
"Very funny Geo! You will get your lesson funny man." speaks silently. He knows the story of old when the sailors woke up on a ship chained to the rowing station. He simply asked Geo to put him on the shuttle if he will get too drunk.
Croaker falls asleep again. His furry snout falls on his chest as he begins to dream...
He sees snow covering fields and trees. The snowstorm makes it hard to see anything. As he moves closer to the tree he sees a bird (Picture owned by Shifty). The long white beak, covered in snow, is directed towards him as two brown eyes are drilling through him. Croaker has the feeling that the bird wishes to tell him something... It opens its beak.
But then Ysoki wakes up. He rubs his head with his furry paws to wake up a bit. He is not sure what did he take yesterday but apparently it had an effect.
"I need a shower" says to no one in particular as he stands up and wonder he to remove the bracelet.
At the briefing
It sure is a dragon! wonders Croaker, He looks around trying to spot some friendly faces. He smiles to Ceolor who he knows and Obozaya. However, he feels like the warrior Vesk has some split personality problem as every mission that he meets her she acts a bit differently. Is she was not so terrifying he would suggest her to consult a specialist.
Culture, what does Croaker knows about dragons: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
"Prepare food? Excuse my ignorance what kind of food do you eat?"
Croaker swears to Eloritu, if the dragon responds: "My favorites are virgins but I couldn't find any for long times."he would roll on the floor laughing. He wonders if this is politically correct.

Triaxian culture is largely defined by the long conflict between the dragons of the Drakelands and the humanoids of the Allied Territories. Between them is the Skyfire Mandate, home to the famous mercenary company, the Skyfire Legion. The trade port of Cumo sits on a river delta on the southern shore of the Mandate on the Sephorian Sea.
True dragons first appeared on Triaxus ages before the Gap in the center of the continent now known as the Drakelands, many immediately setting about to enslave all “lesser creatures.” Long ago, the Drakelands was divided into a chaotic mess of independent city states and nations constantly warring with one another for dominance. Nowadays, the wars occur not on battlefields, but in closed door meetings and with corporate espionage between dragoncorps in bids for economic dominance.
Cadascon, also known as the City of Brimstone, is an ancient city that had its heyday long before the Gap. It was ruled by a tyrannical dragon named Brior the Unblinking, who forced ryphorian slaves to work crystal mines that were zealously guarded from outsiders. Due to the hazardous terrain surrounding the city, it has lain empty and mostly undisturbed for centuries, save for scavengers and reckless, would-be treasure hunters

"I will have a shopping list and a few tasks for you, it will give you an opportunity to look around."
"Prepare food? Excuse my ignorance what kind of food do you eat?"
"Meat" Zafeldrin’s tail twitches again, and combined with an overly toothy smile there is just the slightest hint of danger. Croaker realises he knows little of dragons, but does he really want to 'find out more'?
"There are four locations you want us to investigate? What can you tell us about these four locations?
"Whilst the exact locations will be divulged in due course, I can tell you that this expedition is mainly for reconnaissance. You will be looking for evidence of what happened to the people of this city long ago, as well as signs of any potential dangers we’ll need to keep an eye out for in the future. The Society will use your reports to decide how to proceed with this discovery, so be diligent.”

"What do you expect us to find once we get to Cadascon? It sounds like we are to scout the surrounding areas of Cadascon to see what is there, and possibly what threats might be in the area. Considering you seem to have little aversion to technology," Bar waves his hands at the dragon's cyberwear, " I assume you have done drone surveillance? If so, what have you found?"
Looking at the rest of the group, Bar nods. "Having multiple teams will be needed. If this city is as large as it sounds, we will need multiple teams just to get a good ground layout. Knowing who here will have our backs if we get into some kind of firefight or natural danger that traps one group or another is very important."
Looking at the group he is apparently in, and the other groups of Starfinder...."I hope one of you is an archeologist? I seem to have forgotten my degree at home? I am Baurquathus, Bar for short. Though sometimes known as Ticcus of the Rusty SRO's band. I am pretty decent at a lot of things, but archeology is not one of them."

Croaker side steps after seeing the dragon to grin and puts few other agents in between himself and Zafeldrin.
He nods to Bar responding:
"I am Croaker mercenary and a medic currently working for Starfinder. I am no archeologist but I know a thing or two" Mysticism could be of use :| Dunno.
He leans towards Bar, which looks comical as he is almost half the size of Pahtra and whispers
"Worst case scenario we will pack whatever we find and bring to our grinning friend over here. I know Obozaya, mostly by reputation and she is not a scholar. Celeor reads a lot but the wrong kind of books. The last vesk I don't know maybe he will be the educated one."

He then gives the Pathra a big grin and offers a hand and a small rectangle of paper with some writing on it. "Ceolor Xusha! Holonovelist of mild renown! Here have a business card! You can tap it on a comms unit and it links my contacts details, homepage, and credit you can redeem for one of my novels! As for archaeology, I've read tons about and explored quite a few ancient civilizations, so I could possibly say I'm capable, but I've certainly never had formal training in it."

You look around the room and at the other Starfinders. They appear to be in two teams.
Team B:
female summerborn ryphorian
female borai
male izalguun
Team C:
male kasatha
female ysoki
male nuar
The teams listen in, and then speak amongst themselves.
Zafeldrin pipes up "I have two tasks I need completed today, I need volunteers to go to Cumo to pick up the ingredients for dinner, and I need some set-up done in the garden, feel free to help with either task, or both - tick tock though" the dragon smiles.
You can do either, neither, or both - stay together or split up...
Spike 'Croaker'
|
Croaker looks at the others and blinks couple of times and then shifts to dragon.
"I waited for you to laugh indicating that you were joking but ok. Why don't we go to Cumo for ingredients and then set-up garden."
Why don't we do both and stay together?
Ceolor Xusha

Ceolor bounds over to the two new teams and offers enthusiastic handshakes and a copy of his business card to everyone there, trying to get names and start some small talk with the people present.
He then turns back to the rest of his team, nodding at the good idea that Croaker presented. "We should stick together! And try getting to know each other as well, before we have to travel through potientially deadly ruins! This is assuming we'd have enough time to do the shopping and set-up without worry."
He turns up to Zafeldrin, asking, "So how much time do we have to get supplies and set up? Also how long does the shopping usually take?"
| Shifty |
"I don't know, how fast are you able to work? How long does shopping take - well that's like 'how long is a piece of string?', how much window shopping and coffee breaks you take, and setting up - well that depends on whether you intend on a rush job or a good one"
You get the feeling the dragon is being deliberately aloof.

Ceolor purses his lips for a second, "Hrmm, how long is a piece of string? I guess we could argue that there's a pretty common length for strings to be that one could make an educated guess at and might be within a reasonable realm of 'correct.' As for this there's quite a few things we could learn as well. For example, how far is the place we'll be shopping? How much of a rush are we in? Are there any good places to stop for a coffee break? Yes, there are hundreds of variables, but just like we can ask 'Are you gold?' and expect a reasonable answer I think you can answer that with something reasonable. Anyways you avoided the arguably more important question, 'How long do we have?'"
Ceolor is just being argumentative! But he's also for doing things together unless we really truly don't have time to do both.

Ceolor puzzles over the address, and looks at the shopping list making sure an enercycle is not on the list. At the second stop he pops into what ever store it seems to be and asks the clerk there if any of the addresses on the list are actual supermarkets.

With that Bar thinks for a moment...."What do I think about a briefing that all we know is that the city was called the City of Brimstone, and ruled by a tyrannical dragon named Brior the Unblinking. He had Ryphorian slaves mine this crystal out of the city.....but it has lain undisturbed until now......I think this might be a good story for Ceolor to write, as I hear he is quite an accomplished writer, and could likely spin this into a horror story. I never pick up penny-dreafuls myself, but I hear if that is your taste, they are not bad."
"One thing I know I won't be doing. I won't be letting my guard down at all while out there. I am hopeful that we can establish some kind of base camp before heading out to the four winds. Jadnura and-or Luwazi would do that, I am hopeful that Zalfedrin has learned a thing or two from both Second Seekers."
"So what have you three been doing for the Society lately?"

Downloading the map software and starting to drop pins, Ceolor realizes the directions Zafeldrin sent to their comm units make no sense as written; they are in fact a carefully worded puzzle relating to Cumo’s buildings and distinct landmarks.
Navaret takes the news badly "This is stupid - I'm really not vibing with this at all, shopping is one thing, a silly treasure hunt is another, let's just ask some locals for the answers"

I went on a “ride-along” during a Society mission several years ago, and immediately afterwards quit my tenure-track job, I believe the Society offers me a better opportunity for research. I'm very excited about the opportunity to explore a pre-Gap city and study ancient Triaxian dialects."
Talet shrugs his multiple shoulders a bit "Not much tie with the Society, just came for the opportunity to compete against alien fighting arts" Ritska laughs "Yeah all brawn and too noisy - you'd never have made a good Ysoki, I should know as I'm the sneakiest of them, after taking a break from the family scrapping business I have signed on as a Scout and sniper for the Society. Talet interjects "You can't just shoot them!"
You could probably grab one out of the air with an Acrobatics or Athletics check

"Let me try Talet....they might be harder to repair with a hole in them."

Bar looks around, hops grabs a chair while hopping onto a table and uses the chair for extra height to jump after a drone.

Cesar gazes at the clues left by the dragon.
"Dragons can be so mysterious. Zafeldrin merely wants to test if we are worthy. Maybe we can figure out what's happening here."

Shopping excursion:
Ceolor, Cesar, Obo, Spike
Obo sees no signs of trouble.
It is a cunning puzzle, bit with Ceolors map and a bit of clever wordplay and innuendo, Cesar manages to narrow it down to an address.

Baur pulls down the first drone, but there is another up there still - and a Starfinder drawing his pistol "I don't have time for this"
Another check to grab the other one

Bar grins, "I bet you do this to make people move faster...."
With that he looks around, sees a ladder nearby, grabs it and runs near the drone. Planting the ladder as firmly as he can, he does his best to run straight up the ladder before it falls because it is unsupported. And just as it starts to fall, Bar leaps off and attempts to grab the drone.

Navaret nods enthusiastically at Ceolors comments,"Novels are great, but I am never sure how much 'gloss' is applied to liven up what may have just been boring missions"
"Oh, no. I never base them directly off of the mission, I just use it as inspiration, taking thoughts and opinions and some of the experiences and then work them into a completely different novel. For example my second most recent work, The Drift Decent Incident pulled on the themes of the fifth level of hell and used a brain-melting disease that a colleague encountered, but had a completely different and diverse storyline that had a different premise, arc, goal and ultimate conclusion to the entire story. I mean the antagonist, spoilers in case you haven't read it yet, ultimately dies, and I think my lashunta friend is still kicking."

Ceolor grins at Cesar as he finds the right place to go. "Nice work there, Cesar! Brilliant deductions and conclusions.... and the map app seems to say that is a supermarket!" As the group trudges through the snow, Ceolor turns to Cailis and asks, "So I mentioned I'be always wanted to hear a Borai's opinion on death and the afterlife, right? Mind if I ask you some questions? They might get a bit metaphysical..."

Cailis and Iko seem highly impressed with the skills of deduction.
You arrive at the identified location, and sure enough when you get there there is a hovertruck full of supplies belonging to a delivery company and a driver waiting there for directions to a party.
You being the drive back.

Baur is looking at the programming - it appears to have been deliberately set up to malfunction, and very recently too, perhaps in the last few minutes.
