Edwin J. Whiskers, Esq. |

Edwin listened to Yukarii's account, and was inclined to agree with Ferian and Zendara, "Our archaeological expedition should get underway. We can't solve all the problems of the world."

DM Fang Dragon |

I'm going to give you a bigger update later, just wanted to get this done while I remember.
This is going to sound really strange but my memory isn't what it was and I'm not really sure I remember you... Perhaps you can fill some parts in, where you the girl with the glasses in my theoretical metaphysics class?
Anyway the nurses tell me you've been concerned for my welfare and tried to visit several times while I was recovering in isolation. The disease they where worried about sounded really scary, although in the end it turned out to be a kind of poison. That poor woman made it just but she's going to be in crutches for life they say.
Anyway the nurses say you wanted to hear my side, honestly there's not much to say. I met this guy Krispian Mcconnel down the pub, a few years older than me, said he went to the same classes a while back. He was funny was free with his money and he seemed to like me, certainly I liked the attention.
We met up a few times, and larked about. Nothing major but he'd give me a dare and a forfeit then I'd give him one and uh they they snowballed a bit. So the thing with the cube was actually a forfeit, I didn't want to run naked through the quad and it sounded harmless enough. He told me it was a fart box, it'd release a stink during the lecture and Prof Ebeneezer is such an old windbag.
Honestly looking back on it, I don't know why I thought it'd have been funny. Prof Ebeneezer is actually a decent guy... And the uni authorities didn't find it funny, I've been asked to leave although they did wave the medical fees. The whole thing is like a bad dream, I don't know what I'll do now. My parents mortgaged the farm so I could go to Uni and now I messed it all up.

Zendara |

Zendara shares the news from the note with the party, asking if anyone else met this mystery guy Krispian McConnel.
___
Later she writes back.
Dear Sheldon,
It's okay if you don't remember me. What matters is that you are okay. I know that being asked to leave seems like the worst thing that could happen right now, but remember that you are still alive and things can still work out for you if you put your mind to it. Hire on board one of the merchant vessels. I know Jack Callahan over on The Loaming is always looking for a good man. Tell him I said you were a good man. You can help your parents out by sending them half your wages and while you're at it, if you keep your eyes open, you'll learn more about a ship than you ever could from the classroom. Keep your nose clean and work hard, and things will work out. You'll see.
Zendara

Dr Xavier Munroe |

"I agree Edwin, we did what we could but it's time for the show to hit the road!" replied Dr Munroe emphatically.
A few minutes later the crew assemble on deck and you watch as The Dawndreader's mooring lines are unhitched and gently you start to float away from land. Deep below in the bowels of the ship, the chained lightning elementals strain at their bounds, powering the electric fans which whirr into life.
Slowly at first but faster and faster you pull away into the perfect afternoon sun. Not a cloud is visible in the sky and as the shore recedes you are graced with the majestic sight of the mighty Miskatronic river plunging into the depths. The water is greenish brown at first but it soon cascades into a rainbow studded cloud. As you pull further away the bottom of the island becomes visible, like an iceberg you realise there's far more below than there is above. Looking down there's is nothing but a distant darkness connecting without any seam with the sky above. This vertiginous sight gives you goosebumps even for those of you used to air travel, if you where to fall...

Braenar Cloudchaser |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

As evening starts to fall, the sun sets behind the distant mountains on Essex Island. The shadow of the island is clearly visible in the evening haze, painting an impossibly long shadow below like a finger stretching out from below. Braenar pauses to look over the railings and remarks, "I've seen this a thousand times but my heart never ceases to skip a beat. Ah but it's good to be in the air! Tonight Dr Munroe and I think we shall have a celebration, good food, good wine, good company!"
And good to his word Braenar and Andrew Segal the chef out do themselves putting on a veritable feast. There where dishes from half a dozen cultures, even a couple of recipes from Yukarii's people. There was a range of refreshments ranging from spring water through light ales to dark heady dwarven beers. Naturally a ship as large as The Dawntreader has an ice room, so the elven ice wine was served at its proper temperature. Later on Dr Munroe and Professor Dexter treat you all to some surprisingly funny songs about their earlier adventures, both having better singing voices than you might have expected, or perhaps that was just the wine?
And to celebrate the beginning of a new chapter, lets hear your level 4 updates!

Edwin J. Whiskers, Esq. |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |

Edwin gazed in wonder at the view of the island, as the Dawntreader pulled away from land. It was one thing to know intellectually what to expect; it was quite another to see the multitude of hues refracted in the sunlight.
He took it upon himself to learn about the ship's systems, so he could assist with maintenance work when necessary. He also spent some time with Dr. Monroe discussing dig procedures, so he would be ready when they arrived at the archaeological site.
Taking ranks in Knowledge (Engineering) and Profession (Archaeologist), among other things.

DM Fang Dragon |

The celebration lasts long into the night and the next morning is something of a blur for most of you. The Dawn Treader had been heading steadily south south west and by the following evening nothing of the Core or Essex Island is visible anymore, leaving your ship an island among the clouds. To begin with this was very peaceful, blessed as you where with beautifully calm weather but Braenar had started staring suspiciously at his barometer muttering that it couldn't last.
On the third day out from land the weather turned with angry clouds on the horizon, it started off with a fine drizzle followed by steady rain. Then winds started to pick up until they started to howl and great arcs of lightning flashed between them. An airship is mostly better than the sea in a gale, but you still get buffeted and every so often you hit a pocket of turbulence and the ship falls a long way before bouncing back up like a cork.

Braenar Cloudchaser |

Gathered in the wheelhouse the door which had exposed your senses to the gale outside suddenly slammed shut and Braenar stomped in, his rain coat leaving a trail of water behind him. He wiped his eyebrows and wrung out his beard before telling you gruffly, "This gale's going to send us at least a hundred miles north of where we want to be, we might want to revise our plans..."
As a reminder you had been making for the free port of Carina, a journey of about a month. The airship can travel about seventy miles per hour at top speed.

Zendara |

Uh, guys? There might be lightning elementals out there... I swear I saw eyes in the storm.
I suggest we head towards Egret Island. It should be to the Northwest.
Unless anyone has a better idea?
Not sure if that Geography roll is something that someone can assist with, but if it is, we're close, so would be worth it.

Edwin J. Whiskers, Esq. |

Knowledge Geography: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Knowledge Planes: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 10
Edwin backed Zendara up, "I thought I saw eyes during that last flash of lightning.
"We should consult the ship's charts and determine the best course of action."

Braenar Cloudchaser |

Bushy eyebrows were raised at Zendara's warning of elementals.. Braenar grabby the controls and shouted, "Damnit I'll try and evade the elementals, but they're attracted to metals. Hold onto something I'm gonna flare the lift crystal!"
From the windows you can see dozens of elementals reveling in the cloud, like moths to a flame they spiral towards you but suddenly there is a deep thrumming noise, a sensation as much felt through your feet and in the pit of your stomach as heard. There is a moment of weightlessness and then you find yourself plastered to the floor as The Dawntreader bobs up like a cork and shoots up thousands of feet in seconds. Your ears pop as the thunder clouds around you visibly recede until you are soaring amongst their crowns.
Most of the smaller elementals were left far behind but two of the biggest were pulled along for the ride by The Dawntreader's wake. Braenr spots them and groans, "Incoming!" before pointing at the deck.
These things have low initiative, so party is up, you have 2 rounds to prepare. I'll sort a map tomorrow.

Edwin J. Whiskers, Esq. |

Edwin grabbed onto a railing and held on for the ride; luckily he managed to keep his breakfast down. When Braenar spotted the pursuing elementals, he prepared himself for battle, raising force shields around him.
Casting Mage Armor (magus) and Shield (occultist).

Zendara |

Are we allowed to aid on that second Geography roll? If so, Edwin's aid should be enough to get Zendara there.
Can the Dawntreader just outrun them? I know they were sucked along in our wake, and maybe we aren't moving fast horizontally yet because we made that huge vertical jump, but since we have a two round lead, seems like we might be able to. Max speed is about 70 miles an hour you said, so that would be about 103 feet per second, and with 6 seconds in a round their movement would have to be extremely high (600+) to catch up to us. Even 15 miles an hour is 132 feet a round, which seems like it would leave most monsters behind.
Braenar, put on some speed. Try to stay beyond reach.
Zendara prepares by finding cover (like maybe behind the ballista?) and casting gravity bow, then she starts singing to inspire everyone's courage.
+1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls.

DM Fang Dragon |

Sure aid another works, so lets say you know about the second option.
The ship shivered slightly as something impacted it and Braenar cried, "There's another smaller one on the stern!"

Professor Mariam Dexter |

Professor Dexter glanced at Dr Munroe and replied, "Right we'll deal with this.". The pair of them shouldered their weapons and headed off to do battle.
I don't want DM PCs to steal the spotlight too much. Map updated.

Yukarii |

Yukarii enjoyed the party a rather great deal as they left port and headed on their way through the skies. She may have enjoyed it a bit too much as she rose a bit late but otherwise she had a pleasant day...staying below decks. Sadly being in the bright blue sky was very hard on Yukarii's eyes and gave her a bit of a headache so she spent her time below decks as much as she could during the day time. As evening came on she finally came up for some fresh air for a bit before heading back down when night fell.
The next day started off rough as the captain's promise of bad weather had held true. Yukarii rather liked storms and it left things dim enough for her that she could get by so when the elementals were spotted she was actually in the wheelhouse to hear of the danger. She held on tight as their altitude plummeted but it seemed the maneuver failed to rid them off all of the elementals. Resigining herself to a fight Yukarii knew she couldn't call Yukaari out in time to be of aid so she focused instead on preparing herself. She thought of armor, a chainshirt made from her mind, and the comfort of being protected. When she released the spell she was coated in a layer of raw magic that would help deflect any attacks. She then thought of the foulness of negative energy, how it felt disgusting and wrong, but also of how it could be used to buffer harm from befalling her and felt safety within as she wrapped a layer of the stuff around her to absorb harm.
False Life: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
I cast false life and mage armor.

Ferian Drim |

So with Zendara’s observations, do we actually need to fight them? It seems unlikely they would have that much movement, as she said.
If we do have to fight, Ferian will just move away from where elementals are coming from and try to get behind some cover.

DM Fang Dragon |

There where lots of elementals out there and Braenar's little manoeuvre has out paced all but 2. The reason these two where able to catch up at all is due to slip streaming. Obviously there's no pathfinder rules for that, but it's quite a strong effect in the real world. Also rule 0. Its gotten a bit late so I'll update tomorrow properly.

Living up to their name, the two lightning elementals were quicker than greased lightning and immediately moved into explore the strange and interesting mobile metal carrying meatbags... Xindyra manages to arch away, but poor Ferian takes the brunt of the assault and gets a nasty shock which leaves smoke rising from his hair.

Zendara's carefully aimed shot strikes directly within the centre of the elemental causing it to spasm in pain.
Hurting from the attack, Ferian heals himself and his cauterised flesh is replaced with pink new skin.

Yukarii is up. NB this is really round 3, but I messed up when I set up the spreadsheet for this fight. Guess it doesn't matter.

Zendara |

Forgot to say explicitly besides adding the bonus, but Zendara is maintaining her Bardic Performance (free action) Inspire Courage, so still +1/+1 to attack and damage... so if you need a boost, don't forget to add it in.

Yukarii |

With the fight upon them Yukarii focused for an instant as she thought to Yukaari, Shield me please Yukaari-chan! Promptly a shield seemed to coalesce of a strange jelly-like substance that moved of it's own accord. She Then focused her mind and called forth a beam of fiery energy to strike at the nearest elemental.
I use a swift action to activate Bonded Manifestation (ectoplasm) then cast scorching ray.

Safely cocooned by Yukaari-chan, Yukarii set her sights on one of the lightning elementals. At a word a beam of intense heat raked towards it, but the elemental was twisting this way and that faster than thought and the beam sailed by harmlessly.
Once more the elementals surged forwards, one of them sails past Xindrya and a pseudopod like arm of lightning slams painfully into her, causing her skin to blister and smoke.

I posted on the weekend, so going to give Ferian another day :)

DM Fang Dragon |

Xindrya lashes out as the elemental surges past, but it was too fast and her blade missed by yards. She then tenses ready to spring when it makes its next pass. Edwin has better luck, his blade slices through a pseudopod of lightning, he felt resistance as the blade cut through but evidently not enough damage was done to sever it.
Still singing, Zendara sights one of the elementals with her bow and shoots. The arrow lances into the elemental's centre of mass causing it buck around, although the after effects where not as impressive as hoped. It has DR, I had to adjust your previous shot too.
OK botting Ferian.
Ferian concentrates on the air around the northern elemental (red) and with a word he floods the area with power, detonating a silent but incredibly bright explosion of light. Showing remarkable reflexes the elemental rolls away from the explosion, avoiding the blinding effects.

Yukarii's spell results in another pencil thin beam of intense heat lancing out. This time her aim was true and the beam struck home causing it to buck and thrash about.
Darting like synchronised swimmers the elementals surge towards their respective targets. One of them swoops in to strike Yukarii who managed to turn with the blow, robbing it of most of it's power. As it rushed past, Xendara uncoiled like a spring, her blade slicing the air scant inches behind it. Lurching forwards another step she lunged, this time striking home, feeling a spongy resistance as her blade cut through the elemental.

The elementals wheel about for another pass, one of them rushes towards Zendara and it's lightning formed claws rake into her once more, re-damaging just healed flesh!
Red: Fly By Attack vs Zendara: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 13 = 28Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 <--- HIT
Edwin was ready for this and he lunged with his sword as the creature approached and again as it whipped past. Each time he felt resistance as it cut through something, resulting in a huge cascade of sparks!
The other elemental flew whipped towards Xindyra, she sprang into action, flicking her blade out but she missed by an inch. The creature reached out to rake her, but Xindyra's blade flicked out once more, parrying the blow. By instinct she lunged and felt her blade momentarily snag before the elemental ripped past.
Parry & riposte uses an aoo if you riposte. I don't think Xindyra has the right feats to get more than one aoo per round so her aoo doesn't apply.
Both elementals are starting to look somewhat ragged now, bleeding showers of sparks.

Zendara |

Zendara is hurt again, after being healed, but despite the buffeting she continues to sing, inspiring the courage of her friends.
She shoots again, trying to finish off the elemental that is trying to kill her.
Attack: 1d20 + 9 + 4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 9 + 4 + 1 + 1 = 24 (bullseye, inspire, point-blank)
Damage: 2d6 + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2, 2) + 2 + 1 + 1 + 2 = 10 (gravity bow, inspire, point-blank, focused shot)

Yukarii |

Yukarii shifted slightly away from the closest elemental and decided to try and end one of the creatures right now. She focused her mind once more on fire and pain of being burned and sent a last beam of fiery energy out at her target.
scorching ray w/IC on red: 1d20 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 1 = 94d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 5, 3, 2) + 1 = 16
Wow, I finally remember the inspire courage buff and it does...not nearly enough to make a hit. I am out of 2nd lvl sor spells now.

Edwin J. Whiskers, Esq. |

Edwin readied for another attack from the elemental, trying to protect Zendara.
Slashing Damage, Black Blade Strike, inspire courage: 1d4 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 1 + 1 = 11
Slashing Damage, Black Blade Strike, inspire courage: 1d4 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 1 + 1 = 11

Xindyra Brenna |

Right, picking up combat reflexes asap.
It looks like the elemental is within my reach?
Xindyra observes green for a moment, then jabs her rapier at the elemental.
Studying the elemental.
Jab, studied combat, inspired: 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (12) + 9 + 2 + 1 = 24 Dmg, studied, inspire: 1d6 + 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 4 + 2 + 1 = 11

DM Fang Dragon |

@Xindrya hard to be sure without squares, I'll have to add some next time. Going to give you the benefit of the doubt this time. Oh btw elementals can't be crit.
One of the elementals miscalculated, stopping within Xindrya's reach and the Tiefling took full advantage by lunging! Her rapier struck something inside the electrified body.
Zendara's archery proved once again to be on point for her follow up shot struck deeply into an elemental and came out carbonised on the other side before falling into the depths. The wounded elemental began to leak sparks in spectacular gouts!
I'm not sure what Feerian would do in this situation, sorry.
Uncertain of what to do, Ferian holds.
Certain the elemental would attack again, Edwin tensed and waited.
Tired now, Yukarii repeated her spell and another beam of fire spat out of her fingers but the elementals moved with mercurial speed and where too hard for her to hit.
Wounded by Zendara's arrow the elemental turned and tried to rake her with its claws as it flew past. Zendara was ready for this and ducked and more to the point Edwin was ready. Just as he hoped, his needle like rapier darted out as it approached skewering something and lashing out once more as the elemental sped past.
Red: Fly By Attack vs Zendara: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8 <--- MISS
The other elemental rallied and surged towards Xindrya with a fizzling crackle but she simply stepped aside and allowed the elemental to impale itself on the point of her blade!
Green: Fly By Attack vs Xindrya: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4 <--- MISS
By now both elementals have taken substantial damage and there's not much fight left in them. Time to finish this!

Xindyra Brenna |

Xindyra heads towards the stern of the section they are on, and makes a jab at the elemental...provided it is within reach.
Jab, studied target: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 9 + 2 = 22 Dmg, studied: 1d6 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 4 + 2 = 9
If it decides to retaliate,

Edwin J. Whiskers, Esq. |

"Elemental to starboard!", Edwin shouted, readying himself again.

Slashing Damage, Black Blade Strike: 1d4 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 6 + 1 = 9

Zendara |

Zendara keeps singing, and feels lucky that she was not again wounded.
She shoots again.
Attack: 1d20 + 9 + 4 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 9 + 4 + 1 = 32 (bullseye, inspire)
Damage: 2d6 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2, 5) + 2 + 1 = 10 (gravity bow, inspire)

DM Fang Dragon |

The elemental in front of Xindrya was unused to her unnatural reach and miscalculated once again and paid for it with its life. Her rapier severed something internal and it deflated in a shower of sparks before the husk like remains were blown away by the breeze!
Edwin tensed once more but Zendara had it covered. Her arrow flew true, lancing through the length of the remaining elemental, deflating it too with a gout of sparks.
COMBAT OVRER!
Seconds turned to minutes as the company panted, tired and bloodied from the battle. Then somebody cried, "Dr Munroe was downstairs with another one!" Suddenly you force your tired legs to stumble to the stern where you find Dr Munroe helping a limping Professor Dexter, both are covered in electrical burns.
